Objective : The transverse hippocampal slice is one of the most commonly studied in vitro models of mammalian brain physiology. However, despite its broad usage, there has been no standardization of slice preparation techniques or recording condition. It is well known that variations in recording conditions can result in profound different effects to neuronal responses. Evoked field potentials, recorded extracellularly, were used to investigate the effects of variations in hippocampal slice preparation protocol on hypoxia responses of CA1 neurones. Material & Methods : Before hypoxic injury, hippocampal slices were incubated for 4 hours. During incubation period, the slices were placed in a incubation chamber($21^{\circ}C$) for recovery from preparation injury and then transferred to recording chamber($34^{\circ}C$) for more recovery and baseline electric recording with current stimulation(0.1Hz). Various time periods in incubation chamber and recording chamber were applied to each experimental group(group 1=60min : 180min, group 2=90min : 150min, group 3=180min : 60min, time in incubation chamber : time in recording chamber) before 10 min hypoxia produced by replacing 95% $O_2$+5% $CO_2$ mixed gas to 95% $N_2$+5% $CO_2$ gas. Calcium, Magnesium ions and several drugs effecting on glutamate receptor also were studied. Recoveries from hypoxic injury of hippocampal slices were estimated by percent recovery of population spike(PS). Statistic analysis of study were performed using paired t-test. Results : The percent recovery of PS after 10min hypoxia was considerably enhanced by increasing the period of current stimulation during incubation period before hypoxic injury. Temperature effect on the result of this experiment was also studied(group 4) but the result from this showed no statistic significance. Low magnesium ion concentration of artificial CSF(Mg-free aCSF) during incubation period enhanced the recovery of PS but low calcium (calcium-free) and high magnesium ion concentration(2mM) reduced it after hypoxic injury. L-glutamate($100{\mu}M$) and AP-5($50{\mu}M$) had no effect on the recovery of PS but CNQX($10{\mu}M$) in artificial CSF during incubation period markedly enhanced the recovery of PS. Co-treatment of AP-5($50{\mu}M$), CNQX($10{\mu}M$) and high magnesium concentration(2mM) enhanced recovery of PS in immediate following period of hypoxic injury but the effect of cotreatment after then decayed rapidly and lost statistic significance. Conclusions : Judging from above results, the condition of baseline recording is important in observing the recovery of population spike after hypoxia, and the time and the condition should be controled more strictly to obtain reliable results.
The capability of real-time observation in TEM is quite useful to study dynamic phenomena of materials in a certain variable ambience. In performing the experiment, the choice of video recording program is an important factor to obtain high quality of movie streaming. Window Movie Maker (WMM) is generally recommended as a default video recording program if one uses "DV Capture" function in DigitalMicrograph$^{TM}$ (DM) software. However, the image quality does not often satisfy the condition for high-resolution microscopic analysis since the severe information loss in the final result occurs during the conversion process. As a good candidate to overcome this problem, Virtual-Dub is highly recommended since the information loss can be minimized through the streaming process. In this report, we demonstrated how useful VirtualDub works in a high-resolution movie recording. Quantitative comparison of the information quality between the images recorded by each software, WMM and VirtualDub, was carried out based on histogram analysis. As a result, the image recorded by VirtualDub was improved ~13% in brightness and ~122% in contrast compared with the image obtained by WMM at the same imaging condition. Remarkably, the gray gradation (meaning an amount of information) becomes wider up to ~115% than that of the WMM result.
A new measurement system of wall pressure fluctuations on a rotating machinery, composed of digital recording device, was developed and evaluated. The small-sized digital recording device was attached on the rotating machinery and then was detached for data reduction. In order to obtain the system transfer function of the digital recording system, a dynamic calibration was performed utilizing the signal from a 1/8 inch B&K microphone as input. The time history of the unsteady pressure was then reconstructed from the output of the sensor by using this transfer function. The reconstructed pressure signals showed good agreement with the reference signal in both temporal and spectral sense. This sensor was then used to measure the wall pressure fluctuations on a rotating blade. An array of microphones were installed on the blade in the circumferential and radial directions. Various statistical moments were obtained from the measurement data set. Comparison of these quantities with the existing studies demonstrated satisfactory agreement. These tests give credence to the relevance and reliability of this device for applications in more complicated turbulent rotating machineries.
A photo-reactive methacrylate monomer having triazine as a core component was examined for photochromic diffractive image formation. Photochromic photopolymer films as a recording media contained a monomer mixture of triazine difunctional metharylate (DT) and ethylene glycol phenyl ether acrylate, binder polymer, photo initiator, and a photochromic spiro-oxazine dye. The content of photochromic dye was changed to examine the effect of photochromophore on diffraction efficiency and real holographic image formation. Holographic recording was performed on the photopolymer film by the combination of reference and probe beam. The diffraction efficiency of the photopolymer film in real-time measurement reached a maximum of $\sim90%$ within 30s. It was highly dependent on the photochromophore contents. After holographic recording, the color of the recorded area was changed under UV light (365 nm) and reversibly bleached to original color upon exposure to a visible light source. Films containing only photochromophore without monomer mixture were not reactive under the recording beam (491nm). Diffractive image formation and mechanism of the holographic recording in the presence of photochromophore will be presented.
The present investigation was conducted to evaluate the regulation of sleep architecture by the red ginseng water extract (RGE) in acutely and chronically restraint stressed rats. Adult rats were fitted with sleep.wake recording electrodes. Following post-surgical recovery, rats were extensively habituated for freely moving polygraphic recording conditions. Polygraphic signs of sleep-wake activities were recorded for 24 h after RGE administration and induction of stress and were analyzed to understand the regulation of sleep architecture. Acute stress decreased wakefulness and increased total sleep, non-rapid eye movement (NREM) sleep, and rapid eye movement (REM) sleep in both the daytime and nighttime recording. RGE shortened the daytime NREM and REM sleep, without changing the wakefulness and total sleep. RGE increased nighttime wakefulness, and decreased total, NREM and REM sleep. Chronic stress increased wakefulness and decreased total sleep in the daytime recording, and increased REM and decreased NREM sleep in both the day and night time recording. RGE ameliorated chronic stress and induced alterations of REM and NREM sleep in the day and night time sleep architecture. Acute and chronic stress could also induce alternations in cortex electroencephalogram (EEG) recording during NREM, REM sleep and wakefulness. These findings suggest that RGE may modulate the sleep behavior in acutely and chronically stressed rats and the ameliorating effect of RGE on the sleep architecture may involve in modulation of $\alpha$-, $\theta$- and $\delta$- wave activities of the cortical EEG.

The storing ability of information of optical disks directly depends on the physical property of recording unit cells. It means that the degradation of optical disks ultimately causes the loss of the physical and chemical properties of recording unit cells and leads also information, too. We investigated the degradation and life time of optical disks which tell us the longevity of the preservation of information. Optical disks were aged using the accelerated aging system and studied by optical reflectivity spectroscopy and atomic force microscopy(AFM), and the preservation environment of electronic media in National central library of Korea also were analysed. Results show that the double reflective coated optical disks have good preservation of recording information but revealed some deformation of dye area in the AFM images. It means that we should include the mechanical and chemical degradation of the optical disks in the life time expectation evaluation.
The ECG(Electrocardiograph) ambulatory test as called Holter is performed usually to diagnose several heart diseases causing different arrhythmias. This paper exposes the insights of the design of a 10-lead ambulatory ECG recorder. Reducing the size and minimizing the power consumption of the ECG recorder are crucial to allow long recording time without causing discomfort to the patient. This paper proposes lower hardware design and differential compression algorithm to extend the maximum 72 hours recording time in consideration of smaller and light-weighted recorder size. The performance results by newly introduced compression algorithm are shown and discussed.
The purpose of this study was to compare rheological properties of six dental interocclusal recording materials and to investigate the effect of temperature on the rheological properties during setting. Five polyvinylsiloxane materials and one polyether material were investigated in this study. The storage modulus (G') and the loss factor ($tan{\delta}$) were measured from 30s after mixing during setting, using the universal dynamic spectrometer. Viscoelastic properties were evaluated by means of G' and $tan{\delta}$ from 5 repeats at $21^{\circ}C$ and $33^{\circ}C$. Individual changes during setting were also evaluated. All data were statistically analyzed using one-way ANOVA and multiple comparison $Scheff{\acute{e}}$ test at the significance level of 0.05. The mean of G was checked at $t_{set}$ (the setting time provided from manufacturer) and $t_{300}$ (the end of experimental time) and the mean of $tan{\delta}$ was checked at to and $t_{set}$. Whereas the increase of the G' value showed generally exponential changes at $21^{\circ}C$, the change of the G' value at $33^{\circ}C$ displayed sigmoidal curves during setting. The change of loss factor $tan{\delta}$ during setting varied. Within the limitations of this study, dental interocclusal recording materials had different viscoelastic properties and most of the materials showed different fluidity at $21^{\circ}C$ and $33^{\circ}C$.
