  • Conductivity is an important thermal property which governs heat transfer in a solid medium. Generally, the determination of conductivity in concrete is very difficult, because concrete is a heterogeneous material composed of cement, water, aggregate, et cetera and time dependent material of which properties change with curing age. In this study, influencing factors on thermal conductivity of concrete are quantitatively investigated by QTM-D3, a conductivity tester developed in Japan. Then, a prediction equation of thermal conductivity of concrete is suggested from the regression analysis of test results. To consider the factors influencing thermal conductivity of concrete, mortar, and cement paste, seven testing variables (age, amount of cement, types of admixtures, amount of coarse aggregate, fine aggregate ratio, temperature, and humidity condition) of the specimens are used. According to the experimental results, the amount of coarse aggregate and humidity condition of specimen are the main factors affecting the conductivity of concrete. Meanwhile, the conductivity of mortar and cement paste is strongly affected by the amount of cement and types of admixtures. However, the curing age has minor effect on the conductivity variation. Finally, the prediction formula of concrete conductivity as a function of aggregate amount, fine aggregate ratio, specimen temperature, and humidity condition is developed.

  • Water extracts from 20 medicinal plants, traditionally used for postmenopausal symptoms in Korea, were examined for their vasorelaxant activity in isolated rat thoracic aorta rings precontracted with norepinephrine (NE). Among the 20 medicinal plants, Cornus officinalis (CoEx, 0.3 mg/mL), Schisandra chinensis (ScEx, 0.3 mg/mL), Erythrina variegate (EvEx, 0.3 mg/mL), and Epimedium koreanum (EkEx, 0.3 mg/mL) showed rapid relaxation of endothelium-intact aorta ($69\pm4%$, $40\pm3%$, $25\pm2%$, and $23\pm3%$ of active tone induced by NE, respectively). In contrast, the extracts of Erythrina variegata (EvEx), Angelica gigas (AgEx), Pueraria thunbergiana (PtEx), and EkEx lead to gradual (i.e., long-term) relaxation to baseline in endothelium-intact vessels. The time to complete relaxation was 20~40 min. These 6 plant extracts were selected for the investigation of possible underlying mechanisms. The CoEx-, ScEx-, or EkEx-induced rapid relaxations were virtually abolished by endothelium denudation, and were significantly inhibited by pretreatment with nitric oxide (NO) synthase inhibitor $N^G$-nitro-L-arginine (L-NNA, 10 ${\mu}M$), indicating that increased formation of NO might contribute to the endothelium-mediated relaxation. In long-term responses, the endothelium denudation did not affect PtEx-induced relaxation, whereas it delayed responses by EvEx and AgEx, and significantly inhibited the effect of EkEx. Among EvEx, AgEx, and PtEx, EvEx attenuated the $CaCl_2$-induced vasoconstriction in high-potassium depolarized medium, implying that EvEx is involved in inhibition of the extracellular calcium influx to smooth muscle through voltage dependent calcium channels. These results provide the scientific rationale for the interrelationships between the use of 20 medicinal plants and their effects on cardiovascular health in estrogen deficient conditions.

  • We have examined the induction of HL-60 cell differentiation by treatment of 2-chloromethyl-1-dihydroxyphosphinyl pyrrolidine(2C-1DPP), which is derivative of piperidine and pyrrolidine by ${\alpha}-phosphoramidoakylation$ reaction. It was observed that HL-60 cell proliferation was dose- and time-dependently inhibited by treatment with 2C-1DPP. 2C-1DPP treatment caused a significant change in NBT reduction and enhanced ATRA-induced NBT reduction. Treatment of 2C-1DPP to HL-60 cells increased only CD11b expression in the cells, and also increased markedly G0/G1 stage arrest of HL-60 cells. These results can suggest that 2C-1DPP induced the differentiation of HL-60 cells to granulocytes lineage and enhanced ATRA-induced differentiation. Moreover, DNA expression levels of p27 were up-regulated during 2C-1DPP-dependent HL-60 cell differentiation. Our results suggest that 2C-1DPP have potential as a therapeutic agent in human leukemia.

  • The terminal current in voltage driven systems is an essential role for characterizing the pattern of electric discharge such as corona, breakdown, etc. Until now, to evaluate this terminal current, Sato's equation has been widely used in areas of high voltage and plasma discharge. Basically Sato's equation was derived by using the energy balance equation and its final form described physical meaning explicitly. To give more general abilities in Sato's equation, we present a generalized approach by directly using the Poynting's theorem incorporating the finite element method. When the magnetic field effect or the time-dependent voltage source is considered, this generalized energy method can be easily applicable to those problems with any dielectric media such as gas, fluid, and solid. As an alternative approach, the integral Ohm's law resulting in small numerical errors has an ability to be applied to multi-port systems. To test the generalized energy method and integral Ohm's law, first, the results from two prosed methods were compared to those from Sato's approach and an analytic solution in parallel plane electrodes. After verification, the generalized method was applied to the tip-sphere electrodes for evaluating the terminal current with three carriers and the Fowler-Nordheim field emission condition. From these results, we concluded that the generalized energy method can be a consistent technique for evaluating the discharge current with various dielectric materials or large magnetic field.

  • Solid lipid nanoparticles (SLN) have been developed as a new drug delivery system. Although many particulate drug carriers, such as microsphere, liposome, niosome, emulsion, etc. have been introduced, they have some disadvantage; low efficiency of incorporation and stability, lack of reproducibility, and so on. Meanwhile, SLN as a new drug delivery system is known to entrap rugs with a high efficiency and a good reproducibility. Moreover, small size SLN can circulate in blood for a prolonged time. Although many preparation methods were introduced, microfluidization method is recommended to be the most useful. This study was attempted to prepare and evaluate ketoprofen-incorporated SLNs (keto-SLN), which were prepared by two methods, ultrasonication and microfluidization. Keto-SLN was evaluated by measurement of particle size and zeta potential, efficacy of entrapment, sedimentation volume, in virto release pattern. The mean particle size was about $0.1\;{\mu}m$, and the size was dependent on the type and the amount of emulsifier. Zeta potential was negative, $-9{\sim}-13mV$ and entrapment efficacy was very high and stability was good for at least 60 days in the respect of particle size and sedimentation volume ratio. Analgesic effect was also determined as well as pharmacokinetic parameters. The former was comparable to that of that of ketoprofen loaded suspension (keto-sus) and the latter revealed that consistent with the delayed release of keto-SLN. $T_{max}$ was longer than keto-sus. Therefore, keto-SLN was favourable dosage forms in the field of drug delivery system such as anti-cancer, analgesics and anti-inflammatory agents.

  • We obtained 4 kinds of extract fraction from Acanthopanacis Radicis Cortex and studied on the influence to the blood pressure of rabbit. These 4 fractions were obtained as follows; Fraction I was insoluble fraction by 99% ethanol from 80% methanol extract of Acanthopanacis Radicis Cortex, fraction II, precipitated fraction by ether from 99% ethanol soluble fraction of 80% methanol extract of Acanthopanaacis Radicis Cortex, fraction III, no precipitated fraction by ether from 99% ethanol soluble fraction of above 80% methanol extract and fraction IV, water extract of Acanthopanacis Radicis Cortex. All of fractions, when administered into ear-vein of rabbit, produced fall of blood pressure. Among these 4 fractions, although fraction III was not only the most potent but had the greatest efficacy, we observed the mechanism of hypotensive action of Acanthopanacis Radicis Cortex, making use of fraction II which was thought as a comparatively pure fraction. Hypotensive action of fraction II (APF II) was not affected by vagotominization but markedly inhibited by atropine. Pretreatment of bethanidine showed a tendency to weaken the depressor action of APF II, although it was not a significant result, but diphenhydramine did not influence APF II action. Phentolamine, guanethidine and chlorisondamine inhibited significantly the hypotensive action of APF II. APF II elicited the potentiation of norepinphrine pressor action dependent on the time-factor whereas it did not influence angiotesin pressor action. It is seemed that APF II exhibited hypotensive action, causing peripheral muscarinic-effect and centrally induced sympatholytic action.

  • Objectives: Titanium dioxide ($TiO_2$), a common nanoparticle widely used in industrial production, is one of nano-sized materials. The purpose of this study was to determine the acute and chronic toxicity of $TiO_2$ using different size and various concentrations on Daphnia magna. Methods: In the acute toxicity test, four concentrations (0, 0.5, 4, and 8 mM) for $TiO_2$ with 250 or 500 nm and five concentrations (0, 0.25, 0.5, 0.75, and 1 mM) for $TiO_2$ with 21 nm were selected to analyze the toxic effect to three groups of ten daphnia neonates over 96 hours. In addition, to better understand their toxicity, chronic toxicity was examined over 21 days using 0, 1, and 10 mM for each type of $TiO_2$. Results: Our results showed that all organisms died before the reproduction time at a concentration of 10 mM of $TiO_2$. In addition, the exposure of anatase (21 nm) particles were more toxic to D. magna, comparing with that of anatase (250 nm) and rutile (500 nm) particles. Conclusions: This study indicated that $TiO_2$ had adverse impacts on the survival, growth and reproduction of D. magna after the 21days exposure. In addition, the number of test organisms that were able to reproduce neonates gradually were reduced as the size of $TiO_2$ tested was decreased.

  • Objective: This study aimed to analyze the effects of computer game exposure on pathological musculoskeletal symptoms in adolescents. Method: This study included 10 male junior high school students who used computers less than 3 times a week for 1 hr per day. The subjects were asked to play computer games for 4 hr. Magnetic resonance imaging of the hand and wrist, from the distal radius and ulnar head to the distal phalanges, and radiography of the cervical vertebrae were performed before and after playing computer games. For each dependent variable, a paired t-test was performed to identify significant changes before and after a 4-hr active computer game (p<.05). Results: The horizontal diameters of the flexor tendons in the index and middle fingers were significantly reduced after playing computer games. The horizontal diameters of the flexor tendons of other fingers did not show any significant differences, but there was a tendency toward a decrease after playing computer games. There was no significant change in the cervical lordosis angle before and after playing computer games. However, the cervical lordosis angle was relatively decreased. Conclusion: The results of this study showed that computer game exposure had direct and indirect effects on morphological changes of flexor tendons. In addition, playing computer games for long periods of time can have a negative effect on normal functioning of the musculoskeletal system, with the possible development of abnormalities. However, computer game exposure in adolescents cannot be decisively identified as a factor causing pathological symptoms, based on the results of this study alone. Thus, longterm longitudinal studies on the overall musculoskeletal system are necessary.

  • The effect of dietary components on cholecystokinin (CCK) release into plasma was investigated in chicks by feeding a meal through a stomach tube, followed by the CCK determination with specific CCK-8 antibody. In experimental 1, the results showed that both isolated soya protein and an amino acid mixture simulating the amino acid composition of the soya protein increased the release of CCK, though to a lesser extent with a delayed response in the former, when added to a protein-free diet. Among amino acids added singly to the protein-free diet, phenylalanine was more efficient than arginine and valine, exerting a response almost identical to the complete amino acid mixture. In experimental 2 and 3, by feeding the protein diets supplemented SBTI, piasma CCK level was promptly increased and this response was in a dose dependent fashion during the measurement time, being higher at 1000 than at 100 mg/kg diet. Since the SBTI supplementation did not affect crop emptying rates significantly, it was concluded that SBTI by itself enhanced CCK release into circulation.

  • The high concentration of N in the wastewater from livestock farming generally renders the efficiency of the wastewater treatment. Therefore, removal of N in livestock wastewater is crucial for successful treatment. The current study was conducted to investigate the optimum conditions for partial nitrification under anaerobic condition following nitritation in TPAD-BNR(two-phase anaerobic digestion-biological nitrogen removal) operating system. Sequential operating test to stimulate partial nitrification in reactor showed that partial nitrification occurred at a ratio of 1.24 in $NO_2{^-}$-N:$NH_4{^+}$-N. With this result, a wide range of factors affecting stable nitritation were examined through regression analysis. In the livestock wastewater treatment procedure, the hydraulic retention time (HRT) and pH range for optimum nitrite accumulation in the reactor were 1-1.5 days and 7-8, respectively. It was appeared that accumulation of $NO_2{^-}$-N in the reactor is due to inhibition of the $NO_2{^-}$-N oxidizer by free ammonia (FA) while the effect of free nitrous acid was minimal. Nitrification was not influenced by DO concentration at a range of 2.0-3.0 mg/L and the difference in the growth rate between $NH_4{^+}$-N oxidizer and $NO_2{^-}$-N oxidizer was dependent on the temperature in the reactor.
