  • A numerical analysis of the effect of the Prandtl number on the natural convection in a cold outer tilted square enclosure with an inner hot circular cylinder is presented. Several Prandtl numbers (Pr=0.1, 0.7, 7) are considered, with different angles($0^{\circ}$, $15^{\circ}$, $30^{\circ}$, $45^{\circ}$) for the enclosure and Rayleigh numbers ($Ra=10^3$, $10^4$, $10^5$). The effect of the Prandtl number on the natural convection is analyzed using isotherms and streamline and surface-averaged Nusselt numbers. The flow and heat transfer characteristics are found to be dependent on the time for $Ra=10^5$ and Pr=0.1 at angles of $0^{\circ}$ and $45^{\circ}$. However, in the other cases, the flow and heat transfer characteristics are independent of the time. The surfaceaveraged Nusselt number increases with an increase in the Prandtl number. As the Prandtl number increases, the Nusselt number becomes larger regardless of the angle for $Ra=10^5$. In particular, the Nusselt number steeply increases when the angle is $45^{\circ}$ for $Ra=10^5$ and Pr=0.1.

  • Networked control systems(NCSs) have gained increasing attention in recent years due to their advantages and potential applications. The network Quality-of-Service(QoS) in NCSs always fluctuates due to changes of the traffic load and available network resources. To handle the network QoS variations problem, this paper presents an intelligent scheduling control method for NCSs, where the sampling period and the control parameters are simultaneously scheduled to compensate the effect of QoS variation on NCSs performance. For NCSs with network-induced delays and packet dropouts, a discrete-time switch model is proposed. By defining a sampling-period-dependent Lyapunov function and a common quadratic Lyapunov function, the stability conditions are derived for NCSs in terms of linear matrix inequalities(LMIs). Based on the obtained stability conditions, the corresponding controller design problem is solved and the performance optimization problem is also investigated. Simulation results are given to demonstrate the effectiveness of the proposed approaches.

  • Saussurea lappa and Taraxacum mongolicum have been used for herbal medicinal treatments against cancers in East Asia. We performed this study to understand the molecular basis underlying the anti-tumor effects of two herbs and analyzed the effects of these medicinal herbs on proliferation and on expression of cell growth/apoptosis related molecules by using an AGS gastric cancer cell line. The treatments of Saussurea lappa dramatically reduced cell viabilities in a dose and time-dependent manner, but Taraxacum mongolicum did not. FACS analysis and Annexin V staining assay also showed that Saussurea lappa induces apoptotic cell death of AGS. Expression analyses via RT-PCR and Western blots revealed that Saussurea lappa increased expression of the p53 and its downstream effector p21/sup Waf1/, and that the both increased expression of apoptosis related Bax and cleavage of active caspase-3 protein. We also confirmed the translocation of Bax to mitochondria Collectively, our data demonstrate that Saussurea lappa induces growth inhibition and apoptosis of human gastric cancer cells, and these effects are correlated with down- and up-regulation of growth-regulating apoptotic and tumor suppressor genes, respectively.

  • In this paper, the harbor tranquility problem is analysed by an improved boundary integral equation method. The effect of the diffracted wave transformation induced by the breakwater and structures located at a harbor mouth is considered. Partial reflection concept is also used to consider energy dissipation effects. The present model is verified by comparing the results of the model for rectangular and semi-circular harbors with the analytic solutions. they show a reasonable agreement. Also the wave height distribution of the HUPO harbor computed using the present model agree well to those from the previous hydraulic model tests. It also shows a good agreement with the results from the time-dependent mild slope equation model.

  • The air gap membrane distillation (AGMD) process was applied for water desalination. The main objective of the present work was to study the heat and mass transfer mechanism of the process. The experiments were performed on a flat sheet module using aqueous NaCl solutions as a feed. The membrane employed was hydrophobic PTFE of pore size 0.22 ${\mu}m$. A mathematical model is proposed to evaluate the membrane mass transfer coefficient, thermal boundary layers' heat transfer coefficients, membrane / liquid interface temperatures and the temperature polarization coefficients. The mass transfer model was validated by the experimentally and fitted well with the combined Knudsen and molecular diffusion mechanism. The mass transfer coefficient increased with an increase in feed bulk temperature. The experimental parameters such as, feed temperature, 313 to 333 K, feed velocity, 0.8 to 1.8 m/s (turbulent flow region) were analyzed. The permeation fluxes increased with feed temperature and velocity. The effect of feed bulk temperature on the boundary layers' heat transfer coefficients was shown and fairly discussed. The temperature polarization coefficient increased with feed velocity and decreased with temperature. The values obtained were 0.56 to 0.82, indicating the effective heat transfer of the system. The fouling was observed during the 90 h experimental run in the application of natural ground water and seawater. The time dependent fouling resistance can be added in the total transport resistance.

  • The nonlinear humidity distribution occurs due to the moisture diffusion when a concrete is exposed to an ambient air. This nonlinear humidity distribution induces shrinkage cracks on surfaces of the concrete. Because shrinkage cracks largely affect the durability and serviceability of concrete structures, the moisture diffusion in concrete must be investigated. The purpose of this paper is to propose a model of the moisture diffusion coefficient that governs moisture diffusion within concrete structures. To propose the model, numerical analysis was performed with several experiments. Because the moisture diffusion coefficient is changed with aging, especially at early ages, the proposed model includes aging effect by terms of the porosity as well as the humidity of concrete.

  • Daidzein, a natural isoflavonoid phytoestrogen, structurally resembles estradiol (E2) and possesses estrogenic activity. This study was designed to test the hypothesis that daidzein may mimic the effects of E2 on ovine follicle development by regulation of the mRNA expression of bone morphogenetic protein receptor genes and thereby influence the reproductive system. Granulosa cells were cultured in serum-free McCoy's 5A medium with and without supplementation of daidzein. Results showed that daidzein (10-100 ng/ml) significantly increased the proliferation of ovine granulosa cells (p<0.05), but inhibited the growth of granulosa cells at a dose of 1,000 ng/ml (p<0.01). Daidzein inhibited progesterone production in a dose dependent manner; however, it did not affect estradiol production by granulosa cells. We also investigated the effects of daidzein on BMPRII, BMPRIB and ALK-5 mRNA expression in ovine granulosa cells by quantitative real-time PCR. Treatment of granulosa cells with daidzein increased significantly expression of these genes at 10-100 ng/ml. Thus, these data suggested that a low concentration of daidzein (10-100 ng/ml) had a direct stimulatory effect on ovine granulosa cells while a high concentration was toxic.

  • This study aimed to compare the cellular toxicities of three clinically used dry eye treatments; 3% diquafosol tetrasodium and hyaluronic acid at 0.3 and 0.18%. A methyl thiazolyltetrazoiun (MTT)-based calorimetric assay was used to assess cellular proliferation and a lactate dehydrogenase (LDH) leakage assay to assess cytotoxicity, using Human corneal epithelial cells (HCECs) exposed to 3% diquafosol tetrasodium, 0.3% hyaluronic acid (HA), or 0.18% HA or 1, 6 or 24 h. Cellular morphology was evaluated by inverted phase-contrast light microscopy and electron microscopy, and wound widths were measured 24 h after confluent HCECs were scratched. Diquafosol had a significant, time-dependent, inhibitory effect on HCEC proliferation and cytotoxicity. HCECs treated with diquafosol detached more from the bottoms of dishes and damaged cells showed degenerative changes, such as, reduced numbers of microvilli, vacuole formation, and chromatin of the nuclear remnant condensed along the nuclear periphery. All significantly stimulated reepithelialization of HCECs scratched, which were less observed in diquafosol. Therefore, epithelial toxicity should be considered after long-term usage of diquafosol and in overdose cases, especially in dry eye patients with pre-existing punctated epithelial erosion.

  • Thermal loads, especially thermal gradients, have a considerable effect on the behaviors of large-scale bridges throughout their lifecycles. Bridge design specifications provide minimal guidance regarding thermal gradients for simple bridge girders and do not consider transversal thermal gradients in wide girder cross-sections. This paper investigates the three-dimensional thermal gradients of arch bridge girders by integrating long-term field monitoring data recorded by a structural health monitoring system, with emphasis on the vertical and transversal thermal gradients of wide concrete-steel composite girders. Based on field monitoring data for one year, the time-dependent characteristics of temperature and three-dimensional thermal gradients in girder cross-sections are explored. A statistical analysis of thermal gradients is conducted, and the probability density functions of transversal and vertical thermal gradients are estimated. The extreme thermal gradients are predicted with a specific return period by employing an extreme value analysis, and the profiles of the vertical thermal gradient are established for bridge design. The transversal and vertical thermal gradients are developed to help engineers understand the thermal behaviors of concrete-steel composite girders during their service periods.

  • $NaCaGd(MoO_4)_3:Ho^{3+}/Yb^{3+}$ ternary molybdates were successfully synthesized by microwave sol-gel method for the first time. Well-crystallized particles formed after heat-treatment at $900^{\circ}C$ for 16 h showed a fine and homogeneous morphology with particle sizes of $3-5{\mu}m$. Under excitation at 980 nm, the UC intensities of the doped samples exhibited strong yellow emissions based on the combination of strong emission bands at the 520-nm and 630-nm emission bands in the green and red spectral regions, respectively. The strong 520-nm emission band in the green region corresponds to the $^5S_2/^5F_4{\rightarrow}^5I_8$ transition of $Ho^{3+}$ ions, while the strong 630-nm emission band in the red region appears to be due to the $^5F_5{\rightarrow}^5I_8$ transition of the $Ho^{3+}$ ions. The optimal $Yb^{3+}:Ho^{3+}$ ratio was found at 9:1, as indicated by the composition-dependent quenching effect of $Ho^{3+}$ ions. The pump power dependence of the upconversion emission intensity and the Commission Internationale de L'Eclairage chromaticity coordinates of the phosphors were evaluated in detail.
