Freezing Seawater for the Long-term Storage of Bacterial Cells for Microscopic Enumeration

  • Although enumerating bacterial cells is a fundamental step in understanding microbial ecosystems in marine environments, substantial decrease in bacterial counts with increasing sample storage time hampers the accurate estimation of bacterial biomass. We compared the variations in bacterial cell numbers caused by freezing and thawing of sample bottles or slides. Bacterial counts of seawater samples frozen only once in a sampling bottle yielded approximately 95% of the original numbers after 90 days, whereas 80% of the original count was obtained for samples prepared on slides. Only 67% and 58% of the original counts were recovered in samples repeatedly frozen and thawed in bottles or on slides, respectively. The results indicated that freezing a seawater sample in a bottle increased the consistency of the epifluorescence microscopic enumeration of bacterial cells.

Development and Estimation of a Burden Distribution Index for Monitoring a Blast Furnace Condition

  • A novel index representing burden distribution form in the blast furnace is developed and index estimation model is built with an empirical modeling method to monitor inner condition of the furnace without expensive sensors. To find the best combination of index and modeling method, two candidates for the index and four modeling methods have been examined. Results have shown that 3-D index have more resolution in describing the distribution form than 1-D index and ANN model produces smallest RMSE due to nonlinearity between the indices and charging mode. Although ANN has shown the best prediction accuracy in this study, PLS can be a good alternative due to its advantages in generalization capability, consistency, simplicity and training time. The second best result of PLS in the prediction results supports this fact.

  • The odds ratio is used for assessing the disease-exposure association, because epidemiological data for case-control of cohort studies are often summarized into 2 ${\times}$ 2 tables. In this paper we define the odds ratio function(ORF) that extends odds ratio used on discrete survival event data to continuous survival time data and propose estimation procedures with censored data. The first one is a nonparametric estimator based on the Nelson-Aalen estimator of comulative hazard function, and the others are obtained using the concept of empirical odds ratio. Asymptotic properties such as consistency and weak convergence results are also provided. The ORF provides a simple interpretation and is comparable to survival function or comulative hazard function in comparing two groups. The mean square errors are investigated via Monte Carlo simulation. The result are finally illustrated using the Melanoma data.

  • 본 논문에서는 분산 공유 메모리(distributed shared memory) 시스템에서 데이터의 일치성(consistency)을 마감시간(deadline) 이내에 완료하기 위해서 새로운 실시간 프로토콜을 제안한다. 분산 공유 메모리 시스템에서 사용되는 공유 데이터는 여러 시스템에 복제를 할 수 있기 때문에 이들간 일치성을 효과적으로 유지시키기 위한 여러 방법이 연구되어 왔다. 기존의 방법들은 평균 액세스 비용을 단축시키기 위한 것이고 프로토콜에 따라 서로 다른 복사본의 개수를 갖게 되며 일치성 유지를 위한 비용은 시스템이 갖고 있는 복사본의 개수에 따라 증가한다. 각 노드가 서로 다른 데드라인을 갖는 실시간 분산시스템에서는 일치성 유지를 주어진 데드라인이내에 완료하기 위해서는 일치성 유지를 위한 비용을 줄이는 것도 요구되지만 데드라인이 상대적으로 급한 노드에 대한 우선적인 처리가 요구된다. 실시간 프로토콜에서는 각 분산 시스템에서 데드라인이 상대적으로 급한 노드가 항시 복사본을 갖게 하고 전체 복사본의 개수를 제한한다. 시뮬레이션을 통해서 실시간 프로토콜의 성능향상을 확인하였다.

  • Given a sequence { $X_{n}$} of independent and identically distributed random variables with F, a sequential procedure for the p-th quantile ξ$_{P}$= $F^{-1}$ (P), 0$\beta$-protection. Some asymptotic properties for the proposed procedure and of an involved stopping time are proved: asymptotic consistency, asymptotic efficiency and asymptotic normality. From one of the results an effect of smoothing based on kernel functions is discussed. The results are also extended to the contaminated case.e.e.

  • A successful on-line monitoring system for conventional machining operations has the potential to reduce cost, guarantee consistency of product quality, improve productivity and provide a safer environment for the operator. In fee-shape machining, typical signs of tool problems such as vibration, noise, chip flow characteristics and visual signs are almost unnoticeable without the use of special equipment. These characteristics increase the importance of automatic monitoring in fine-shape machining; however, sensing and interpretation of signals are more complex. In addition, the shafts of the micro-tools break before the typical extensive cutting edge of the tool gets damaged. In this study, the existence of a relationship between the characteristics of the cutting force and tool usage was investigated, and tool breakage detection algorithm was developed and the fellowing results are obtained. In data analysis, didn't use a relative error compare which mainly used in established experiment and investigated tool breakage detection algorithm in time domain which can detect AE and cutting force signals more effective and accurate.

  • This paper presents an area-based stereo algorithm suitable to real time applications. The core of the algorithm depends on the uniqueness constraint and on a matching process that allows for rejecting previous matches. The proposed approach is compared with the left right consistency constraint, being the latter the basic method for detecting unreliable matches in many area-based stereo algorithms. We used the watermelon and tomatoes for experiments.

Automatic Speech Database Verification Method Based on Confidence Measure

  • In this paper, we propose the automatic speech database verification method(or called automatic verification) based on confidence measure for a large speech database. This method verifies the consistency between given transcription and speech using the confidence measure. The automatic verification process consists of two stages : the word-level likelihood computation stage and multi-level likelihood ratio computation stage. In the word-level likelihood computation stage, we calculate the word-level likelihood using the viterbi decoding algorithm and make the segment information. In the multi-level likelihood ratio computation stage, we calculate the word-level and the phone-level likelihood ratio based on confidence measure with anti-phone model. By automatic verification, we have achieved about 61% error reduction. And also we can reduce the verification time from 1 month in manual to 1-2 days in automatic.

  • It is noted that many econometric time series have long-memory properties. A long-memory process, or strongly dependent process, is characterized by hyperbolic decaying autocorrelations and unbounded spectral density at the origin. Since the long-memory property can be observed by data obtained from rather a long period, there is some possibility of parameter change in the process. In this paper, we consider the estimation of change-point when there is a change in the variance of a long-memory process. The estimator is based on some reasonable statistic and the consistency is shown using Taqqu's strong reduction theorem

Malignant Localized Fibrous Mesothelioma - Report of one case - (악성 국한성 섬유성 중피종 - 1예 보고 -)

  • Mesothelioma is a primary tumor of the pleura. There are two forms of mesotheliomas; diffuse form and localized form. The majority of localized mesotheliomas are benign, but the tumor with pedicle recur at 20% after removal of it. Malignant localized fibrous mesothelioma is differential diagnosed pathologically and clinically with diffuse mesothelioma. Symptoms of localized mesothelioma are generally related to the size of the tumor. We presented one case of malignant localized fibrous mesothelioma. The patient was 32 years old female and chief complaints were dyspnea and dry cough. Sputum cytology and needle lung biopsy were not able to diagnose definitely the tumor. Explothoracotomy was carried out for definite tissue biopsy. At the time of operation, huge adult head size mass was in the right thoracic cavity. The surface of the mass was nodular, multilobular and had hard consistency. Pedicle was formed above first rib and its diameter was 4.5cm. There was no adhesion except to RUL. Frozen biopsy suggested mesothelioma. Extirpation of the mass, right upper lobectomy. and partial pleurectomy were carried out.
