Implementation of the VHOE-based Multiview 3D Display System by using Optimized Exposure-Time Scheduling Scheme

  • A new exposure time scheduling scheme to implement the optimized photopolymer-based VHOE is proposed and using this method, the 8-view VHOE system is experimentally developed. The CGS dependence on the exposure energy is mathematically modeled using the fourth-order polynomial function and using this model optimized exposure-time schedule for recording the given multiple gratings in the photopolymer is calculated. In addition, basing on this suggested exposure-time schedule, 8-view VHOE is finally implemented and its performance is discussed.

  • This paper considers a timeslot assignment problem in an interactive satellite multimedia (ISM) system with digital video broadcast-return channel via satellite (DVB-RCS). The timeslot assignment problem is formulated as a binary integer programming to maximize the overall weighted throughput and is shown to be NP-hard. Thus, three real-time heuristic algorithms including ratio-based, packet-size (PS)-based, and transmission gain (TG)-based are derived, and some computational experiments are made. Considering the results, the ratio-based heuristic algorithm is demonstrated to be the most effective and efficient. We propose adapting the ratio-based heuristic algorithm to the timeslot assignment problem to greatly improve the ISM system utilization.

  • In this study we develop a computer simulation model to evaluate the effects of various production and order processing policies measured in terms of on-time delivery rate and average waiting time of job orders. Policies considered include : eliminating inflated due date, lot splitting, loss time reduction, attaining full flexibility in production lines, and selective order promising scheme. Actual order-production data from a chemical company were used in the simulation model. Based on the simulation results, we make several suggestions that can significantly reduce the production lead time and increase the on-time delivery rate.

  • It is important to understand the amount of time required to execute an emergency procedural task in a high-stress situation for managing human performance under emergencies in a nuclear power plant. However, the time to execute an emergency procedural task is highly dependent upon expert judgment due to the lack of actual data. This paper proposes an analytical method to estimate the operator's performance time (OPT) of a procedural task, which is based on a measure of the task complexity (TACOM). The proposed method for estimating an OPT is an equation that uses the TACOM as a variable, and the OPT of a procedural task can be calculated if its relevant TACOM score is available. The validity of the proposed equation is demonstrated by comparing the estimated OPTs with the observed OPTs for emergency procedural tasks in a steam generator tube rupture scenario.

  • This paper deals with the Cell-based distributed processing for generating free viewpoint images by merging multiple differently focused images. We previously proposed the method of generating free viewpoint images without any depth estimation. However, it is not so easy to realize real-time image reconstruction based on our previous method. In this paper, we discuss the method to reduce the processing time by dimension reduction for image filtering and Cell-based distributed processing. Especially, the method of high-speed image reconstruction by the Cell processor on SONY PLAYSTATION3(PS3) is described in detail. We show some experimental results by using real images and we discuss the possibility of real-time free viewpoint image reconstruction.

Unsupervised Learning-Based Pipe Leak Detection using Deep Auto-Encoder

  • In this paper, we propose a deep auto-encoder-based pipe leak detection (PLD) technique from time-series acoustic data collected by microphone sensor nodes. The key idea of the proposed technique is to learn representative features of the leak-free state using leak-free time-series acoustic data and the deep auto-encoder. The proposed technique can be used to create a PLD model that detects leaks in the pipeline in an unsupervised learning manner. This means that we only use leak-free data without labeling while training the deep auto-encoder. In addition, when compared to the previous supervised learning-based PLD method that uses image features, this technique does not require complex preprocessing of time-series acoustic data owing to the unsupervised feature extraction scheme. The experimental results show that the proposed PLD method using the deep auto-encoder can provide reliable PLD accuracy even considering unsupervised learning-based feature extraction.

  • Heat generation and temperature of a battery is usually presented by an equation of current. This means that we need to adopt time domain calculation to obtain thermal characteristics of the battery. To avoid the complicated calculations using time domain, 'state of charge (SOC)' can be used as an independent variable. A SOC based calculation method is elucidated through the comparison between the calculated results and experimental results together. Experiments are carried for rapid resistive discharge of a large-capacitive lithium secondary battery to evaluate variations of cell potential, current and temperature. Calculations are performed based on open-circuit cell potential (SOC,T), internal resistance (SOC,T) and entropy (SOC) with specific heat capacity.

  • Research on damage detection methods in structures began a few decades ago with the introduction of methods based on structural vibration frequencies, which, of course, continues to this day. The value of important structures, on the one hand, and the countless maintenance costs on the other hand, have led researchers to always try to identify more accurate methods to diagnose damage to structures in the early stages. Among these, one of the most important and widely used methods in damage detection is the use of time-frequency representations. By using time-frequency representations, it is possible to process signals simultaneously in the time and frequency domains. In this research, the Short-Time Fourier transform, a known time-frequency function, has been used to process signals and identify the system. Besides, a new damage index has been introduced to identify damages in concrete piers of bridges. The proposed method has relatively simple calculations. To evaluate the method, the finite element model of an existing concrete bridge was created using as-built details. Based on the results, the method identifies the damages with high accuracy.

  • Vehicle travel time (empty travel time pius loaded travel time) is a key parameter for designing AGV-based material handling systems. Especially, the determination of empty vehicle travel time is difficult because of the stochastic nature of the empty vehicle locations. This paper presents a method to estimate vehicle travel times for AGV-based material transport systems. The model considers probabilistic aspects for the travel time and vehicle location under random vehicle selection rule and nearest vehicle selection rule. The estimation of empty travel time is of major effort. Simulation experiments are used to verify the proposed travel time model, and the simulation results show that the presented model provides reasonable travel time estimations.

A Real-time Traffic Signal Control Algorithm based on Travel Time and Occupancy Rate (통행시간과 점유율 기반의 실시간 신호운영 알고리즘)

  • This research suggested a new real-time traffic signal control algorithm using fusion data of the travel time and the occupancy rate. This research applied the travel time data of traffic information system to traffic signal operation, and developed the signal control process using the degree of saturation that was estimated from the travel time data. This algorithm estimates a queue length from the travel time based on a deterministic delay model, and includes the process to change from the queue length to the degree of saturation. In addition, this model can calculate the traffic signal timings using fusion data of the travel time and the occupancy rate based on the saturation degree. The micro simulation analysis was conducted for effectiveness evaluation. We checked that the average delay decreased by up to 27 percent. In addition, we checked that this signal control algorithm could respond to a traffic condition of oversaturation and detector breakdown effectively and usefully. This research has important contribution to apply the traffic information system to traffic signal operation sectors.
