  • There are several antenna calibration methods, so-called 3-Antenna Method, Standard Site Method, and Standard Antenna Method which measure the antenna gains or antenna factors. These methods yield the free space or quasi free space antenna gains in only the frequency domain. In this paper, an antenna calibration method using the time domain in the open area test site is discussed. The reflected waves due to the ground are traced in the time domain. After they are removed by the time gating function of network analyzer, the free space transmission coefficient $S_{21}$ is extracted. Such a way is applied to the broad band horn antenna ranging 1 GHz to 18 GHz, and the free space gains are obtained by Friis transmission equation. The method is checked by Standard Site Method in open area test site. The results show comparatively good agreement except for 18 GHz.

  • This paper deals with the real-time message network system by a CAN (controller area network) based on the real-time distributed control scheme to integrate actuators and sensors in a humanoid robot. In order to apply the real-time distributed processing for a humanoid robot, each control unit should have the real-time efficient control method, fast sensing method, fast calculation and real-time valid data exchange method. Moreover, the data from sensors and encoders must be transmitted to the higher level of control units in maximum time limit. This paper describes the real-time message network system design and the performance of the system.

  • The purpose of this study is to analyze the safety of evacuation using the Pathfinder program for the alert at once, the priority alarm method, the priority alarm method for the four floors above, and the sequential priority alarm method, which is a modification of the priority alarm method specified in the tourist hotel building. Currently, in Korea's National Fire Safety Codes (NFSC), fire alarm methods are compulsorily applied differently depending on the number of floors and total floor area of a building. Although the growth rate is getting faster due to the diversification of building structures, it is still an obstacle to improving evacuation safety to comply with the standardized fire alarm method in NFSC. As a result of the experiment, the evacuation time was found to be faster with the priority alarm method for the four floors above than the priority alarm method applied to the specific firefighting object. Compared to the priority alarm method applied to the tourist hotel, which is a specific firefighting target with 5 or more floors and a total floor area of more than 3,000m2, the time was shortened by 3.7 seconds when measured by applying the priority alarm method for the four floors directly above. This indicates that it is necessary to take measures to select a fire alarm method suitable for the structure and environmental conditions of the building rather than applying the uniform NFSC regulations.

  • This paper describes a new fractal image coding algorithm to shorten time to take on fractal image encoding by using limited search area method and scaling method. First, the original image is contracted respectively by half and by quarter with the scaling method. And then, the corresponding domain block of the quarter-sized image which is most similar with one range block of the half-sized image is searched within the limited area in order to reduce the encoding time extremely. This searched block is used in encoding. Also, we propose an algorithm provided much shorter encoding time and better compression ratio with a little degradation of the decoded image quality than Jacquin's method.

  • Pb-contaminated soil at a clay shooting range was analyzed by the sequential extraction method to identify metal binding properties in terms of detrital and non-detrital forms of the soil. Most of the metals in the soils existed as non-detrital forms, exchangeable and carbonate-bound forms, which could be easily released from the soil by a washing method. Therefore, the characteristics of Pb desorption for remediation of the Pb-contaminated soil were evaluated using hydrochloric acid (HCl) by a washing method. Batch experiments were performed to identify the factors influencing extraction efficiency. The effects of the solid to liquid (S/L) ratio (1:2, 1:3, and 1:4), soil particle size, and extraction time on the removal capacity of Pb by HCl were evaluated. Soil samples were collected from two different areas: a slope area (SA) and a land area (LA) at the field. As results, the optimal conditions at 2.8 to 0.075 mm of particle size were 1:3 of the S/L ratio and 10 min of extraction time for SA, and 1:4 of the S/L ratio and 5 min of extraction time for LA. The characteristics of Pb desorption were adequately described by two-reaction kinetic models.

  • The application of laser in pipelines was started from the base of using laser in nuclear facilities industries and power plants. Because laser can be delivered to a remote area without any difficulties, the application of laser in many industries can solve many difficulties from limitation of access in danger area and reduced the risks of workers. Therefore, we developed a new experimental technique to measure internal defects of pressure vessels with a combination of shearog-raphy and image processing technique. Conventional NDT methods have been taken relatively much time, money and manpower because of performing as the method of contact with objects to be inspected. But digital shearography is laser-based optical method which allows full-field observation of surface displacement derivatives. This method has many advantages in practical use, such as low sensitivity to environmental noise, simple optical configuration and real time mea-surement. In this paper, we find the optimum shearing magnitude with EFM and experiment and measured internal crack length of the pressure vessels at a real time and estimated the error of the results.

  • We investigate the sunspot area data spanning from solar cycles 1 (March 1755) to 23 (December 2010) in time domain. For this purpose, we employ the Hilbert transform analysis method, which is used in the field of information theory. One of the most important advantages of this method is that it enables the simultaneous study of associations between the amplitude and the phase in various timescales. In this pilot study, we adopt the alternating sunspot area as a function of time, known as Bracewell transformation. We first calculate the instantaneous amplitude and the instantaneous phase. As a result, we confirm a ~22-year periodic behavior in the instantaneous amplitude. We also find that a behavior of the instantaneous amplitude with longer periodicities than the ~22-year periodicity can also be seen, though it is not as straightforward as the obvious ~22-year periodic behavior revealed by the method currently proposed. In addition to these, we note that the phase difference apparently correlates with the instantaneous amplitude. On the other hand, however, we cannot see any obvious association of the instantaneous frequency and the instantaneous amplitude. We conclude by briefly discussing the current status of development of an algorithm for the solar activity forecast based on the method presented, as this work is a part of that larger project.

  • There are many research results for the location update cost minimization of location management in cellular networks. For minimizing the location update cost, we have to take in consideration of each users' mobility pattern. This paper suggests location area list generation and a 3-step paging method based on users' movement history with the users' profiles. Users' mobility has not only geographical regular patterns but also time-related regularity. So, the method extracts users' movement regularities in both geography and time from their movement history, and generate location area list considering the regularities. For the performance analysis of the suggested method, we have executed a simulation for suggested method with user's mobility model. The results of the simulation show that suggested algorithm has some merits in the location management cost.

  • We compared two nondestructive methods for leaf area estimation using leaves of 16 common plant species classified into six types depending on leaf shape. Relatively good linear relationships between actual leaf area (LA) and leaf length (L), width (W), or the product of length and width (LW) were found for ordinary leaves with lanceolate, oblanceolate, linear and sagitttate shapes with entire margins, serrate margins, mixed margins with a entire form and shallow lobes, and ordinary incised margins. LA was better correlated with LW than L or W, with $R^2$ > 0.91. However, for deeply incised lobes, LA estimation using LW showed low correlation coefficient values, indicating low accuracy. On the other hand, a method using photographic paper showed a good correlation between estimates of area based on the mass of a cut-out leaf image on a photographic sheet (PW) and actual leaf area for all types of leaf shape. Thus, the PW method for LA estimation can be applied to all shapes of leaf with high accuracy. The PW method takes a little more time and has a higher cost than leaf estimation methods using LW based on leaf dimensions. These results indicate that researchers should choose their nondestructive LA estimation method according to their research goals.

  • The ADCP is an instrument based on Doppler effect, which measures discharge of a river in a short time while crossing it. In this study we aim to make a comparison of the discharge results from a moving-vessel ADCP with those measured by velocity-area method at the same cross-section, and to investigate the characteristics of velocity and discharge data using ADCP. Bathymetry measured by ADCP almost coincides with that by direct depth measurements. Because velocity data from ADCP are essentially instantaneous, individual velocity profiles obtained by ADCP are rather different from time-averaged velocity profiles. But spatially averaged velocity profiles of the individual ADCP data near the comparable verticals have similar vertical velocity pattern with the time-averaged ones. The average velocity profile from repeatedly crossed data is also similar with the time-averaged one. In case of the velocity distribution, individual and spatially averaged data for the sub-width of mid-section method Have good agreement with those by velocity-area method. Discharge data determined by averaging several ADCP measurement transects have $0.1\%{\~}9.3\%$ of difference with those from velocity-area method, and as the number of measurement increases, the relative difference to the velocity-area method decreases.
