The Effects of Restrictions in Economic Activity on the Spread of COVID-19 in the Philippines: Insights from Apple and Google Mobility Indicators

  • This study aims to investigate the effects of restrictions in economic activity on the spread of COVID-19 in the Philippines. This research employs daily time-series data of confirmed new COVID-19 cases, Apple mobility trends (i.e., use of public transport to destinations, volume of people driving, and amount of walking to destinations) and Google community mobility (i.e., visits to transit stations, visits to workplaces, and staying-at-home) indicators covering the period February 17 to September 11, 2020. The analysis starts by establishing the correlation pattern of new confirmed COVID-19 daily infections to each independent variable. The results show negative linear correlation of the number of new COVID-19 daily infections with less visit to transit station, increase stay-at-home, less use of public transport, and less amount of walking to destinations. Interestingly, the number of new COVID-19 daily infections indicates some form of positive linear correlation with visits to workplaces and volume of people driving. Moreover, employing robust least square regression via the method of MM-estimation, major findings reveal that across mobility measures, staying-at-home has the highest impact on reducing the spread of COVID-19, followed by visiting transit stations less, less use of public transport, less amount of walking, and less workplace visits.

  • .betha.-galactosidase activity of Escherichia coli cells containing operon fusion nhaA'-'lacZ was monitored to study the regulation of expression of nhaA gene under various conditions. The expression of the fusion was enhanced only by chemicals containing Na$^{+}$ or Li$^{+}$. This Na$^{+}$ or Li$^{+}$. This Na$^{+}$(Li$^{+}$)-specific enhancement of .betha.-galactosidase activity represented the increase in the rate of synthesis of .betha.-galactosidase rather than the decrease in the breakdown rate. The induction pattern was influenced by copy numbers of the gene. Induction by Na$^{+}$ or Li$^{+}$ was concentration and time dependent, reaching maximum 5-6 fold induction after 2 hours at 0.4-0.5 M for Na$^{+}$ or at 0.25-0.35 M for Li$^{+}$, Although the expression was induced at much lower concentration of Na$^{+}$ at alkaline pH values than at neutral pH in the presence of Na$^{+}$, alkaline pH itself did ot induced the expression of the fusion in the absence of Na$^{+}$. Temperature shift and growth phase of culture did not affect the level of induction.he level of induction.

Role of $Mg^{2+}$ in RNA splicing of T4 td intron

  • The splicing activity of T4 phage td intron RNA has been examined with various Mg$^{2+}$ ions such as MGCl$_{2}$, MgS $O_{4}$ and magnesium acetate using various splicing conditions such as different incubation time and temperature. The maximum splicing of td intron RNA occurred at the concentration of 5 mM MgCl$_{2}$. Raising the Mg$^{2+}$ concentration up to 15 mM appeared to promote P2 delection mutant to overcome the loss of some splicing activity. In both wild type and mutant, a complete hydrolysis of RNA occurred at 30 mM MgCI$_{2}$ MgS $O_{4}$ and magnesium acetate exhibited the rate and pattern of RNA splicing identical to MGCI$_{2}$. The optimal splicing conditions involve the incubation of RNA with 5 mM MgCI$_{2}$ at 58 .deg.C for 15 min. The results suggest that Mg$^{2+}$ may play a key role in the catalytic mechanism of td intron RNA.n RNA.

Anti-Inflammatory Activity of Vacuum Distillate from Panax ginseng Root on LPS-Induced RAW264.7 Cells

  • Panax ginseng has been widely applied as an important herb in traditional medicine to treat numerous human disorders. However, the inflammatory regulation effect of P. ginseng distillate (GSD) has not yet been fully assessed. To determine whether GSD can ameliorate inflammatory processes, a GSD was prepared using the vacuum distillation process for the first time, and the regulation effect on lipopolysaccharide-induced macrophages was assessed. The results showed that GSD effectively inhibited nitric oxide (NO) formation and activation of inducible nitric oxide synthase (iNOS) mRNA in murine macrophage cell, but not cyclooxygenase-2 production. The mRNA expression pattern of tumor necrosis factor alpha and IL-6 were also reduced by GSD. Furthermore, we confirmed that GSD exerted its anti-inflammatory effects by downregulating c-Jun NH2-terminal kinase (JNK) phosphorylation, the extracellular signal-regulated kinase phosphorylation, and signaling pathway of nuclear factor kappa B (NF-κB). Our findings revealed that the inflammatory regulation activity of GSD could be induced by iNOS and NO formation inhibition mediated by regulation of nuclear factor kappa B and p38/JNK MAPK pathways.

GIS를 이용한 접근성의 공간적 패턴 분석: 공간적 접근성 측정방법에 대한 비판적 검토 (A GIS-based Analysis of Spatial Patterns of Individual Accessibility: A Critical Examination of Spatial Accessibility Measures)

  • 본 연구는 시간지리학 개념을 도입한 새로운 접근성 개념을 통해 공간적 근접성과 단일한 이동 행태를 전제하는 기존의 방법을 비판적으로 검토해보고자 한다. 이를 위해, 미국 Portland Metro 지역의 개인통행자료를 이용해 시공간적 접근성의 공간적 패턴과 근접성의 관계를 비교${\cdot}$분석하였다. 시간지리학의 시공간 프리즘 개념에 기반한 시공간적 접근성은 근접성 외에도 시공간 제약에 따른 다양한 이동성을 고려한 대안적 방법으로 최근 새롭게 주목받고 있다. 기존 방법은 접근성이 도시의 기능 중심성과 유사한 공간패턴을 보일 것으로 예상하지만, 연구결과는 접근성이 근접성보다는 개인의 시공간적 속성에 더 많은 영향을 받는다는 사실을 보여준다. 접근성은 CBD나 도시기회의 고밀도지역을 멀리 벗어난 지역에서 오히려 높게 나타났으며, 같은 지리적 특성을 공유하는 동일 지역이라 할지라도 성별에 따라 다르게 드러났다. 이는 접근성이 거주지뿐만 아니라 다른 공간적 축들(직장, 자녀의 탁아시설등)을 중심으로도 형성되며, 이에 따라 집에서 멀리 떨어진 곳의 도시 기회들이 집 주변의 도시기 회들보다 개인의 접근성에 더 큰 기여를 할 수 있다는 점을 시사한다.

수확시기에 따른 부추 성분 및 항산화효과의 변화 (Components and Antioxidative Activities of Buchu (Chinese chives) Harvested at Different Times)

  • 김해지역 '그린벨트'종 부추의 영양성분과 항산화효과를 수확시기별로 비교하였다. 그 결과 초벌부추는 수분 함량이 가장 낮고 단백질, 지방, 회분의 함량이 높았다. 아미노산 함량은 2벌부추에서 높았고 주요 구성 아미노산은 aspartic acid, alanine, glutamic acid였다. 또한, 초벌부추의 항산화효과가 가장 큰 것으로 나타났고 부추의 수확이 되풀이될수록 유리기 소거효과가 낮아짐을 알 수 있었다. 항산화효과 측정방법에 따른 상관관계를 측정한 결과 TEAC법과 FRAP법은 r=0.996(p<0.001)의 가장 높은 상관관계를 나타내었고 FRAP과 DPPH법이 0.992, TEAC법과 DPPH법이 0.987로서 모두 유의수준 99%에서 높은 상관관계가 인정되었다. 부추의 항산화 관련 원인물질을 규명하기 위하여 클로로필, 카로테노이드, 비타민 C 및 총페놀 함량을 측정한 결과 클로로필은 $532.11{\sim}581.47\;mg%$, 카로테노이드는 $24.8{\sim}30.5\;mg%$, 비타민 C는 $249.4{\sim}325.4\;mg%$, 총페놀은 $132{\sim}184\;mg%$ 함유되어 있었다. 수확횟수가 증가할수록 클로로필 함량은 증가하였으나 나머지 성분들은 감소하였다. 특히, 비타민 C와 총페놀 함량의 급격한 감소(각각 23.4%와 28.3%)는 항산화효과의 감소와 밀접한 관련이 있어서 TEAC값과 비타민 C 함량의 r=0.991, TEAC값과 총페놀함량의 r=0.989이었다.

치매, 경도인지장애, 허혈성 뇌졸중 환자에서 인지기능, 우울 및 일상생활수행능력의 변화 비교 (A Comparative Study of Changes in Cognitive Function, Depression and Activities of Daily Living in Patients with Dementia, Mild Cognitive Impairment and Ischemic Stroke)

  • 본 연구의 목적은 치매, 경도인지장애, 허혈성 뇌졸중 환자의 인지기능, 우울과 일상생활수행능력의 변화를 비교하고 도구적 일상생활수행능력의 변화를 설명하는 요인을 확인하기 위함이다. 총 86명(치매=30명, 경도인지장애=32명, 허혈성 뇌졸중=24명)으로부터 진단 시점과 1년 뒤에 인지기능, 우울, 기본적 및 도구적 일상생활수행능력 자료를 수집하여 분석하였다. 반복측정분산분석과 다중회귀분석을 이용하였다. 집행기능(p=.037)과 도구적 일상생활수행능력(p=.023)에서 측정 시점에 따른 집단 간 교호작용이 유의한 것으로 확인되었다. 경도인지장애 집단은 진단 후 1년 동안 집행기능과 도구적 일상생활수행능력의 변화가 거의 없었으나, 시간이 지남에 따라 치매 집단에서는 감소하는 양상이 나타났고 허혈성 뇌졸중 집단에서는 향상되는 양상을 나타냈다. 또한, 집행기능이 저하될수록(p=.030), 기본적 일상생활수행능력이 저하될수록(p<.001) 도구적 일상생활수행능력도 저하되는 것으로 확인되었으며 설명력은 26.9%였다. 이러한 결과는 인지변화를 주요 증상으로 가지는 치매, 경도인지장애, 허혈성 뇌졸중 환자에서 진단 후 1년까지 질병의 초기 단계에 각기 다른 집행기능 변화 양상이 나타났으며, 이로 인해 도구적 일상생활수행능력 변화 양상이 다른 것으로 보인다. 보건의료전문가는 진단 직후부터 집행기능과 도구적 일상생활수행능력 문제를 정기적으로 평가하고 이와 관련된 기능 상태를 유지 및 증진하기 위한 중재를 제공해야 할 것이다.

천식 환자 가정 내 굽기조리 활동에 의한 실내 미세먼지(PM2.5) 농도 수준의 변화 (Impact of Indoor Pan-frying Cooking Activity on Change of Indoor PMPM2.5 Concentration Level in Asthmatics' Homes)

  • Asthmatics are more susceptible to fine particulate matters (PM2.5), compared to the general population. It has been reported that indoor PM2.5 is mainly generated by combustion of fossil fuels, meat or fish In particular, asthmatics are known to be more susceptible to indoor PM2.5 because 65~95% of child or adult asthmatics stay inside the house. Thus, understanding the association between indoor activity patterns and variations in indoor PM2.5 levels is important. The purpose of this study is to determine the distribution of hourly indoor PM2.5 concentrations in asthmatics' homes, and to evaluate its association with pan-frying cooking activity patterns, the most common PM2.5 emission related activity. From November 2017 to February 2018, real-time PM2.5 concentrations were measured in the living room of each asthmatic's house (n = 35) for three weeks at 1 minute intervals. At the same time, self-reported daily activity patterns, hourly proportion (%) of cooking activities, were also recorded every hour over three weeks for each patient. In this study, we provided quantitative evidence that the distribution patterns of indoor hourly PM2.5 concentrations were associated with indoor cooking activities, especially in the homes of adult asthmatics. In addition, we observed that PM2.5 emitted by pan-frying could maintain even over up to 2 hour lagtime.

담배잎의 일생에 있어서 RuBisCO 함량과 Protease활성의 변동 (Changes of RuBisCO Content and Protease Activity during the Life Span of Tobacco Leaf)

  • Changes in the amount of ribulose 1, 5-bisphosphate carboxylase/oygenase(=RuBisCO) protein, namely fraction I protein, and the protease activity were determined in the 10th leaf of tobacco(Nicotiana tabacum, var. Ky-57) from 10 days after emergence through senescence at 5 days interval. The amount of RuBisCO per deveined leaf rapidly increased during the early growing season, reached a maximal quantity at the around 20 days after leaf emergence, when the leaf has gone through its most rapid expansion, and began gradually to decrease till 30 days after leaf emergence, thereafter significantly declined to 45 days that the leaf has been dried up partly. The pattern of the ratio of RuBisCO protein to soluble protein in quantity changed similar to that of RuBisCO contents in a leaf, that was 43%, 60%, and 21% at the around 10 days, 20 days, and 45 days, respectively. And RuBisCO contents was linearly correlated with the concentration of chlorophyll(r=0.98) throughout the life span of the leaf. So, it was assumed that the leaf color can be a useful indicator for judging whether RuBisCO contents higher or not in tobacco leaves without homogenization. On the other hand, the protease activities for degradation of casein were assayed at pH 5.5. 7.0. and 8.5 with crude extracts desalted on Sephadex G-25. The highest caseolytic activity was found at pH 5.5 throughout the life sawn of the leaf. Also, the activity at 5.5 became gradually to increase from 30 days after leaf emergence, when RuBisCO protein had became to disappear and remarkably increased in the last stage of senescence, although nitrogen contents of the leaf had reached low levels. The caseolytic activity at pH 5.5 was in negative correlation with RuBisCO contents throughout the life span of the leaf, but not in lineality between them. In other words, the caseolytic activity increased in a rapid exponential manner when RuBisCO contents had reached some low levels. These results showed that the leaf age, namely harvesting time, is a very important factor for the production of the tobacco leaf containing higher RuBisCO protein. It was concluded that the practical harvesting time is between 20 days and 30 days after the leaf emergence from the present results.

포담환이 Picrotoxin-유도 경련시 뇌중 GABA 및 Glutamate 함량변화에 미치는 영향에 관한 연구 (Study on the Effects of Podam-hwan on Brain GABA and Glutamate Levels in the Picrotoxin-induced Convulsion)

  • Currently convulsion is considered to be a chronic central nerve disease characterized by involuntary and severe muscle contraction or spasm. In many recent studies, convulsion's mechanism is due to unbalance between stimulation and suppression of the central nerve system, such as GABA and glutamic acid. Objectives : This study was performed to examine the anticonvulsant effects of Podam-hwan on brain GABA levels and glutamate content in picrotoxin-induced convulsions and to determine the inhibitory activity on GABA transaminase. Methods : Brain GABA levels and glutamate content in the brains of picrotoxin-induced mice using reverse phase HPLC method, anticonvulsant effect in vivo, and the inhibitory effect on GABA transaminase activity in vivo have been investigated. Results : Podam-hwan significantly lengthened the onset time of picrotoxin-induced convulsion at a concentration of 15mg/kg, but did not show a dose-dependent pattern. Also, Podam-hwan shortened the duration of convulsion by 52.2% at a dose of 30mg/kg in comparison with the control group. Podam-hwan inhibited dose-dependently GABA transaminase activity by 35.5% at 30mg/kg, comparing with the control gmup. Podam-hwan also increased the brain GABA level by 38.7% and 68.8% at doses 15mg/kg and 30mg/kg, respectively. In addition, Podam-hwan decreased the brain glutamate level by 9.6% and 17.8% at doses 15mg/kg and 30mg/kg, respectively. Conclusions : Podam-hwan can be prescribed for the treatment of convulsion by enhancement of brain GABA level and inhibition of GABA transaminase activity.
