Effects of Hydrogen on the PWSCC Initiation Behaviours of Alloy 182 Weld in PWR Environments

  • Alloy 82/182 weld metals had been extensively used in joining the components of the PWR primary system. Unfortunately, there have been a number of incidents of cracking caused by PWSCC in Alloy 82/182 welds during the operation of PWR worldwide. To mitigate PWSCC, optimization of water-chemistry conditions, especially dissolved hydrogen (DH) and Zn contents, is considered as the most promising and effective remedial method. In this study, the PWSCC behaviours of Alloy 182 weld were investigated in simulated PWR environments with various DH content. Both in-situ and ex-situ oxide characterizations as well as PWSCC initiation tests were performed. The results showed that PWSCC crack initiation time was shortest in PWR water (DH: 30cc/kg). Also, high stress reduced crack initiation time. Oxide layer showed multi-layered structures consisted of the outer needle-like Ni-rich oxide layer, Fe-rich crystalline oxide, and inner Cr-rich inner oxide layers, which was not altered by the level of applied stress. To analyse the multi-layer structure of oxides, EIS measurement were fitted into an equivalent circuit model. Further analyses including TEM and EDS are underway to verify appropriateness of the equivalent circuit model.

  • Crack control remains a primary concern for mass concrete structures, where the majority of cracking is caused by temperature changes during the hydration process. One-time pouring is a useful construction method for mass concrete structures. The suitability of this method for constructingon of the Shanghai Tower's mass concrete foundation slab of Shanghai Tower is considered here by a numerical simulation method based on a 6- meter- thick slab. Some of the conclusions, which can be verified by monitoring results conducted during construction, are as follows. The temperature gradient is greater in the vertical direction than in the radial direction, therefore, the vertical temperature gradient should be carefully considered for the purpose of crack control. Moreover, owing to cooling conditions at the surfaces and the cement mortar content of the slab, the temperatures and temperature gradients with respect to time vary according to the position within the slab.

Effect of Corrosion Characteristics in Relation to Loaded Stress in the Welded Zone of A5083-H116 Aluminum Alloy (A5083-H116 알루미늄 합금재 용접부의 부하응력에 따른 부식특성의 영향)

  • Effect of corrosion characteristics in relation to loaded stress in the welded zone of A5083-H116 aluminum alloy, in the seawater was studied. The corrosion experiment was performed for 120 hours on the specimens in the natural seawater tank with four steps of the loaded stress. The corrosion crack, corrosion rate, electrode potential, current, and corrosion pattern, etc. were examined for the specimens with the elapse of the immersion time. The main result derived from this study is the crack growth length is increased with the increasing loaded stress. The electrode potential and the corrosion current are decreased rapidly in the early stage of the corrosion, and then decreased gradually and stabilized eventually with the elapse of the immersion time. The test condition of the longer crack growth tends to show the higher corrosion rate. Corrosion pattern of the welded zone indicates that the depth and width of the pitting become increasing with the increasing loaded stress.

  • An automotive air conditioning assembly consists of a condenser, a compressor and an evaporator. These major components are connected with rubber hoses and aluminum pipes. Once mounted on the automotive air conditioning assembly, it is exposed to a serious vibration environment for a long time. In some cases, there are vibration cracking on the assembly. In order to solve this vibration problem, several real vibration tests are performed on the assembly of which the lay-out was optimized, in spite of sample production cost and making time. In this study, a frequency response analysis, which is a kind of finite element method of the vibration, was performed to know the characteristic of the vibration transmission on the assembly lay-out. The analysis result indicated the damping performance, which is satisfied with the vibration standard of car maker, in rubber hoses and the whole assembly.

Numerical study of stress states near construction joint in two-plate-girder bridge with cast-in-place PC slab

  • For reducing construction cost, two-plate-girder bridges are getting popular in Japan. This type of bridge employs a PC slab, which is often cast-in-place. In such a case, concrete is not usually cast over the whole slab at one time: some portions are constructed earlier than the rest. Therefore, a construction joint is inevitably created. Due to the drying shrinkage of concrete, tension stress may occur in concrete slab. High tensile stress can be expected near the construction joint where concretes with different ages meet. Moreover, prestressing is not applied over the whole length of slab at one time. This may also serve as a source of tensile stress in the slab. Thus there is a chance that cast-in-place PC slab, especially near the construction joint, may be subjected to tensile cracking. In the present study, stress states near the construction joint in the cast-in-place PC slab of a two-plate-girder bridge are investigated numerically. The finite element method is employed and the three-dimensional analysis is conducted to see the influence of dry shrinkage and prestressing. The stress states in the PC slab thus obtained are discussed. The simplified model of a plate girder for this class of analysis is also proposed.

Synthesis and Characterization of $CeO_2$ Powders by the Hydrothermal Process (수열합성법을 이용한 세륨산화물 나노분말의 특성 및 합성에 대한 연구)

  • We have successfully synthesized $CeO_2$ nanopowders by means of the hydrothermal method, in a low temperature range of $100-200^{\circ}C$. In order to investigate the structure and morphology of the nanopowders, scanning electron microscopy and X-ray diffraction have been employed. In addition, for exploring the optical properties, Raman spectroscopy, Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy, and photoluminescence spectroscopy have been used. In the optimized condition, with the pH, velocity, and time of 4.5, 600 rpm, and 60 h, the $CeO_2$ nanopowders with a diameter ranging from 50 to 150 nm have been synthesized. The nanopowders exhibited the visible emission mainly in the blue region. With comparing the reaction time, it is revealed that the extinction of functional groups at 60 h contributed to the growth and homogenization of the $CeO_2$ powders. Since the overgrowth and agglomeration of nanopowders were found, we suggest that the cracking/growth process is more favorable mechanism than the dissolution/precipitation process.

Laboratory Performance Evaluation of Chemcrete Modified Asphalt Mixtures (켐크리트 개질 아스팔트 혼합물의 실내 공용성 평가)

  • The stiffness of chemcrete modified asphalt mixtures increase rapidly with time in the presence f oxygen and high temperature, Sometimes the asphalt pavements that have chemcrete modified asphalt mixture applied on the surface none show premature cracking because of the excessive increase in the stiffness f the asphalt mixtures. To mitigate this premature cracking, the chemcrete modified mixtures have been used as a base course material. In this study, the performance of the chemcrete modified asphalt binder and mixtures are investigated through a course of various laboratory tests including dynamic shear rheometer and bending beam rheometer tests for binders and uniaxial tensile fatigue, wheel tracking, and moisture damage tests for the mixtures. And also the resilient modulus of the conventional and chemcrete modified mixtures are compared based on the test results conducted on the specimens obtained from various in-situ test sections. It can be concluded from the tests results that the chemcrete modified mixtures show better rutting resistance than conventional mixtures. The chemcrete modified mixtures may have low temperature cracking when it is applied in the cold region. The stiffness of chemcrete modified mixtures is approximately 50 percent higher than that of conventional mixtures more than two years after the chemcrete modified mixture was applied in the base course.

  • In this study, a numerical method for the material nonlinear analysis of reinforced concrete shell structures including the time dependent effects due to creep and shrinkage is developed. Degenerate shell elements with the layered approach are used. The perfect or strain hardening plasticity model in compression and the linearly elastic model in tension until cracking for concrete are employed. The reinforcing bars are considered as a steel layer of equivalent thickness. Each :steel layer has an uniaxial behaviour resisting only the axial force in the bar direction. A bilinear idealization is adopted to model elasto-plastic stress-strain relationships. For the nonlinear anaysis, incremental load method combined with unbalanced load iterations for each load increment is used. To include time dependent effects of concrete, time domain is divided into several time steps which may have different length. Some numerical examples are presented to study the validity and applicability of the present method. The results are compared with experimental and numerical results obtained by other investigator.

  • The effects of accelerated Ultraviolet (UV) radiation on High temperature vulcanized (HTV), Room temperature vulcanized (RTV) silicone rubber and two types of ethylene propylene diene terpolymer (EPDM) used for composite insulator were inverstigated by hydrophobicity class (HC), surface voltage decay after corona charging, SEM-EDS, FTIR and XPS. The contact angle in two kinds of silicone rubber was scarcely change, but EPDM occurred to the loss of hydrophobicity followed by surface cracking and chalking. The surface voltage decay on UV-treated silicone rubber and EPDM showed a different decay trend with UV treatment. EDS and XPS analysis indicated that the oxygen content increased with UV treatment time in all samples. For silicone rubber, the oxidized groups of inorganic silica-like structure increased with UV treatment time. The oxidized carbon of C=0, O=C-O in EPDM increased. These oxidized surface for each material had different electrostatic characteristics, so deposited charges were expected to have different impacts on their surface hydrophobicity. The degradation mechanism based on our results was discussed.
