Ultimate Analysis of Prestressed Concrete Cable-Stayed Bridges (프리스트레스트 콘크리트 사장교의 극한해석)

  • A method of analysis for the material and geometric nonlinear analysis of planar prestressed concrete cable-stayed bridges including the time-dependent effects due to load history, creep, shrinkage, aging of concrete and relaxation of prestress is described. The analysis procedure, based on the finite element method, is capable of predicting the response of these structures through elastic, cracking, inelastic and ultimate ranges. The nonlinear formulation for the description of motion is based on the updated Lagrangian approach. To account for the material nonlinearity, nonlinear stress-strain relationship and cracking of concrete, nonlinear stress-strain relationships of reinforcing steel, prestressing steel, and cable, including load reversal are given. Results from a numerical examples on ultimate analyses of cable-stayed bridges are presented to illustrate the analysis method.

IMPURITY SEGREGATION ON CRACKED GRAIN BOUNDARIES IN LLCC SOLDER JOINTS DURING THERMAL CYCLING (온도 변화에 지배되는 LLCC Solder접합부에서 균열이 일어난 계면에 대한 불순물 편석)

  • A large number of grain boundaries were seen to crack in near-eutectic solder joints of leadless ceramic chip carriers (LLCC's) during thermal cycling at temperature ranges from -$35^{\circ}C$ to +$125^{\circ}C$ with lhr time period. One potential explanation for this type of cracking might be the presence of embrittling species on the boundary. Although there do not appear to be any instances reported in the literature of solders being embrittled by small amounts of contaminating species, the possibility of such an occurrence exists. The potential presence of impurities located at crack surfaces was inspected using Scanning Auger Microprobe(SAM) and it was found that intergranular cracking could be accomplished by the oxidation of the grain boundary. A physical model for fatigue crack growth was introduced, in which grain boundary separation took place under oxidation facilitated by sliding.

Study on the Semi-Analytical Ice Load Calculation Methods for the Ice-Breaking Simulation (쇄빙시뮬레이션을 위한 반해석적 빙하중 계산법 고찰)

  • This paper presents the semi-analytical ice load calculation methods that are useful to simulate the ice-breaking process. Since the semi-analytical methods rely on the previously developed closed form equations or numerical analysis results, the user's exact understanding for the equations must be supported in order to use the methods properly. In this study, various failure modes of ice such as local crushing, in-plane splitting failure, out-of-plane bending failure and radial or circumferential cracking with rotation of the broken ice floe are considered. Based on the presented methods, the fracture modes were evaluated according to the size and thickness of ice. In addition, time series analysis for the ice-breaking process was performed on several ice conditions and the results were analyzed.

Parametric study on stress distribution of thin disk specimen of rupture disk corrosion test influencing SCC initiation using finite element analysis

  • Rupture disk corrosion test (RDCT) method has been recently developed for real-time measurement of initiation of stress corrosion cracking (SCC) in a high-temperature water. This work presents a parametric study on the stress distribution of a thin disk specimen of RDCT to consider the fixture shape and friction using finite element analysis (FEA). The FEA results showed a dome-shaped deformation of the specimen. From the stress analysis as a function of friction coefficient, it was suggested that the maximum stress was applied around the dome-edge, which was invariant with change to the friction coefficient. This indicates that friction between the fixture and the specimen has little effect on stress distribution. On the other hand, the stress analysis as a function of a rounded-corner radius (Rc) revealed the location at which the maximum stress was applied shifted from the dome edge to the dome center as Rc increased. From SCC initiation tests using the RDCT apparatus in a primary water environment, it was found that SCC initiates at the dome edge when Rc is 0.5 mm, while SCC initiates near the disk center when Rc is 2.0 mm. This experimental result is in good agreement with the results of FEA.

  • This C-ring test, normally employed for evaluating susceptibility to stress-corrosion cracking, was determined to be a suitable small scale test to evaluate PWHT(Post-Weld Heat Treatment) cracking susceptibility. This test is possible to incorporate an actual weld, to introduce a notch into the coarse grained HAZ(Heat Affected Zone), to load the coarse grained HAZ any level of stress ad, most importantly, since the C-ring is an approximately constant strain type test, the stress decreases with time at temperature in a manner similar to that of an actual steel weldment. The procedure employed in making the C-ring was presented in the experimental procedure section, however, several points deserve further discussion. The walls of the weld groove are made along radial lines form the center of th var in order to obtain an HAZ which is oriented perpendicular to the walls of the machined C-ring. Therefore, the plane of maximum stress will be aligned through the HAZ and, therefore, crack propagation will not be forced to deviate form the plane of maximum stress in order to remain in the coarse grained HAZ as is the case with the Y groove test.

Shrinkage analysis of reinforced concrete floors using shrinkage-adjusted elasticity modulus

  • The shrinkage of large reinforced concrete floors often gives rise to cracking problems. To identify the problematic areas, shrinkage movement analysis is often carried out by finite element method with proper creep and shrinkage models using step-by-step time integration. However as the full stress history prior to the time interval considered is necessary, with the increase in the number of time intervals used, the amount of computations increases dramatically. Therefore a new method using the shrinkage-adjusted elasticity modulus (SAEM) is introduced so that analysis can be carried out using one single step. Examples are presented to demonstrate its usefulness.

Investigation of Aggregate Size Effect on Cracking Behavior in Concrete Fracture Test using Mechanoluminescent Paint (압광 페인트를 이용한 콘크리트 파괴시험시 골재크기가 균열성상에 미치는 영향조사)

  • In order to capture the fast crack propagation in an unmanipulated concrete fracture test, we employed mechanoluminascent(ML) material, which emits visible light when stressed, as a crack visualization tool. Three-point bending fracture test setup, a paint type ML material and a high speed camera were used to capture the images of fast moving cracks. The maximum size of coarse aggregates of concrete was used as an experimental parameter. The crack images, loading, and crack mouth opening displacement were successfully recorded as a function of time elapsed. From the test results, several interesting cracking behavior in the unmanipulated fracture test was observed in such that (1) the crack moves fast while the load is slowly decreased after the maximum loading, and (2) the crack in concrete with larger coarse aggregates moves faster than the others.

  • This work is concerned with a statistical approach to the life prediction on irradiation-assisted stress corrosion cracking (IASCC) of stainless steel (SS) for core internals of a pressurized water reactor (PWR). The previous results of the time-to-failure of IASCC measured on neutron-irradiated stainless steel components were statistically analyzed in terms of stress and irradiation. The accelerating life testing model of IASCC of cold worked Type 316 SS was established based on an inverse power model with two stress-variables, the applied stress and irradiation dose. Considering the variation of the yield strength and applied stress with the irradiation dose in the model, the remaining life of the baffle former bolt was statistically predicted during operation under complex environments of stress and irradiation.

  • In order to predict the remaining life of marine concrete structures under climatic loads, it is necessary to develop an analytical approach to predict the time and space dependent deterioration of concrete structures due to mainly chloride attack up to corrosion initiation and additional deterioration like cracking of cover concrete. This study aims to introduce FEM model for life-time simulation of concrete structures subjected to chloride attack. In order to consider uncertainties in materials as well as environmental parameters for the prediction, Monte Carlo Simulation is integrated in that FEM modeling for reliability-based remaining service life prediction. The paper is organized as follows: firstly general scheme for reliability-based remaining service life of concrete structures is introduced, then the FEM models for chloride penetration, corrosion product expansion and cover cracking are briefly explained, finally an example is demonstrated and the effects of localization of chloride concentration and corrosion product expansion on service life using above model are discussed.

Investigation on optimum protection potential of high-strength Al alloy(5456-H116) for application in ships (선박용 고강도 Al합금(5456-H116)의 최적 방식 전위결정에 관한 연구)

  • Recently, interest in using Al alloys in ship construction instead of fiber-reinforced plastic (FRP) has increased because of the advantages of A) alloy ships over FRP ships, including high speed, increased load capacity. and ease of recycling. This paper investigated the mechanical and electrochemical properties of Al alloys in a slow strain rate test under various potential conditions. These results will provide reference data for ship design by determining the optimum protection potential regarding hydrogen embrittlement and stress corrosion cracking. In general, Al and Al alloys do not corrode on formation of a film that has resistance to corrosion in neutral solutions. In seawater, however, $Cl^-$ ions lead to the formation and destruction of a Passive film. In a potentiostatic experiment. the current density after 1200 sec in the Potential range of $-0.68\~-1.5\;V$ was low. This low current density indicates the protection potential range. Elongation at an applied potential of 0 V was high in this SSRT. However, corrosion protection under these conditions is impossible because the mechanical properties are worse owing to decreased strength resulting from the active dissolution reaction in parallel parts of the specimen. A film composed of $CaCO_3\;and\;Mg(OH)_2$ confers corrosion resistance. However, at potentials below -1.6 V forms non-uniform electrodeposition coating, since there is too little time to form a coating. Therefore, we concluded that the mechanical properties are poor because the effect of hydrogen gas generation exceeds that of electrodeposition. Comparison of the maximum tensile strength, elongation, and time to fracture indicated that the optimum protection potential range was from -1.45 to -0.9 V (SSCE).
