  • Ontology mapping is the task of finding semantic correspondences between two ontologies. In order to improve the effectiveness of ontology mapping, we need to consider the characteristics and constraints of data models used for implementing ontologies. Earlier research on ontology mapping, however, has proven to be inefficient because the approach should transform input ontologies into graphs and take into account all the nodes and edges of the graphs, which ended up requiring a great amount of processing time. In this paper, we propose a multi-strategic mapping approach to find correspondences between ontologies based on the syntactic or semantic characteristics and constraints of the topic maps. Our multi-strategic mapping approach includes a topic name-based mapping, a topic property-based mapping, a hierarchy-based mapping, and an association-based mapping approach. And it also uses a hybrid method in which a combined similarity is derived from the results of individual mapping approaches. In addition, we don't need to generate a cross-pair of all topics from the ontologies because unmatched pairs of topics can be removed by characteristics and constraints of the topic maps. For our experiments, we used oriental philosophy ontologies, western philosophy ontologies, Yahoo western philosophy dictionary, and Yahoo german literature dictionary as input ontologies. Our experiments show that the automatically generated mapping results conform to the outputs generated manually by domain experts, which is very promising for further work.

  • Aspergillus fumigatus is a major cause of invasive aspergillosis (IA), a significant health issue worldwide with high mortality rates up to 95%. Our lab is interested in how A. fumigatus adapts to low oxygen conditions 'hypoxia', which is one of the important host microenvironments. A. fumigatus SrbA is a basic helix-loop-helix (bHLH) transcriptional regulator and belongs to sterol regulatory element binding protein (SREBP) family members. Loss of SrbA completely blocks growth in hypoxia and results in avirulence in murine models of IA suggesting an essential role of SrbA in hypoxia adaptation and virulence in A. fumigatus. We conducted chromatin immunoprecipitation sequencing (ChIP-seq) with A. fumigatus wild type using a SrbA specific antibody, and 97 genes were revealed as SrbA direct targets. One of the 'SrbA regulons' (AFUB_099590) was a putative bHLH transcriptional regulator whose sequence contained a characteristic tyrosine substitution in the basic portion of the bHLH domain of SREBPs. Therefore, we designated AFUB_099590 SrbB. Further characterization of SrbB demonstrated that SrbB is important for radial growth, biomass production, and biosynthesis of heme intermediates in hypoxia and virulence in A. fumigatus. A series of quantitative real time PCR showed that transcription of several SrbA regulons is coordinately regulated by two SREBPs, SrbA and SrbB in hypoxia. This suggests that SrbA and SrbB have both dependent and independent functions in regulation of genes responsible for hypoxia adaptation in A. fumigatus. Together, our data provide new insights into complicated roles of SREBPs in adaptation of host environments and virulence in pathogenic fungi.

  • Stress is one of the major causes threatening the mental and physical health of human today. In this paper, we analyzed the heart rate variability(HRV), galvanic skin response(GSR), and skin temperature data measured from the university subjects before and after the class to examine the influence on bio-signal in stress environment. Thirty subjects from university students (aged between 21 and 27 years; mean=22.31, STD=1.45) took part in this study. From the experiment results, RMSSD(p=0.033), LF peak(p=0.003), VLF(p=0.045) were statistically significant from those of the control group(p<0.05) of HRV both in time and frequency domain. We observed that mean skin conductivity after the class(mean=5.993(uS), SD=3.406) is higher than that before the class(mean=3.039(uS), SD=2.628) by 97.2% on average and the skin temperature after the class($34.835{\pm}0.305$) is slightly higher than that before the class($34.471{\pm}0.281$) by 1.055% on average. The results in this research could be used to examine the autonomic response in clinical stress related research.

  • Transient/time-domain electromagnetic (TEM) soundings were carried out on reclaimed land, since the TEM sounding has good resolution of a conductive and thin overburden. The reclamation material is marine clay dredged from the seafloor, which is currently undergoing consolidation in the upper part of the dredged layer. The conductivity of the marine-origin clay is generally more than 0.3 S/m. The aim of the TEM sounding was to determine the depths of weathered and soft rocks overlain by thick and conductive overburden. The TEM responses were measured at delay times of 0.050-20.575 ms with a $30{\times}30$ m coincident loop array. Data from the TEM inversion and core logging indicate that the resistivities of the conductive overburden are less than 2 ${\Omega}$-m, while those of the weathered and soft rocks are 10-20 and 70 ${\Omega}$-m, respectively. The depth to weathered rock is 26-58 m and the depth to soft rock is 46-75 m.

  • Weather radar systems can provide weather information of the ground, sea, and air in extensive spatial coverage in near real time. However, it becomes problematic when ground clutter signal exists around precipitation because strong signals of ground can cause a false precipitation report. A large percentage of land coverage of Korea consists of mountainous regions where ground clutter needs to be mitigated for more accurate prediction. Thus, it is considered necessary to introduce a new suitable ground clutter removal technique specifically adequate for Korea. In this paper, the C-Map(Clutter Map) method using raw radar signals is proposed for removing ground clutter using a terrain-adaptive clutter map. A clutter map is generated using raw radar signals(I/Q) of clear days, then it is subtracted from received radar signals in frequency domain. The proposed method is applied to the radar data acquired from Sobaeksan rain radar and the result shows that the clutter rejection ratio is about 91.17 %.

  • A Bayesian approach was introduced to improve the belief of prior distributions of input parameters for the probabilistic safety assessment of radioactive waste repository. A GoldSim-based module was developed using the Markov chain Monte Carlo algorithm and implemented through GSTSPA (GoldSim Total System Performance Assessment), a GoldSim template for generic/site-specific safety assessment of the radioactive repository system. In this study, sequential Bayesian updating of prior distributions was comprehensively explained and used as a basis to conduct a reliable safety assessment of the repository. The prior distribution to three sequential posterior distributions for several selected parameters associated with nuclide transport in the fractured rock medium was updated with assumed likelihood functions. The process was demonstrated through a probabilistic safety assessment of the conceptual repository for illustrative purposes. Through this study, it was shown that insufficient observed data could enhance the belief of prior distributions for input parameter values commonly available, which are usually uncertain. This is particularly applicable for nuclide behavior in and around the repository system, which typically exhibited a long time span and wide modeling domain.

  • Using six-year (2004-2009) SKYNET measurements, MODIS-derived AOTs were validated at five SKYNET sites (Seoul, Chiba, Etchujima, Fukuejima, and Hedomisaki), in addition to climatological analysis of MODIS-derived optical properties over the East Asian domain ($20-50^{\circ}N$, $90-150^{\circ}E$). In so doing MODIS-SKYNET collocated AOT data were constructed if two measurements are taken within 25 km distance and within 30 minute time difference. From the comparison of two measurements, it is demonstrated that aerosol type insignificantly affects the accuracy of MODIS AOT. It is because the aerosol model combining predefined fine aerosol model and coarse aerosol model is used for the retrieval. However, positive bias between MODIS and SKYNET increases as fraction of the coarse aerosol model increases. In addition, MODIS AOT appears to be overestimated in case of lower aerosol loading while the overestimation tends to decrease with increased aerosol loading. Regression analysis between MODIS AOT and SKYNET AOT for 550 nm band yields 0.86, 0.16, and 0.61 of regression slope, intercept, and coefficient of determination, respectively. Those statistical results may draw a conclusion that MODIS AOTs over East Asia carry a reasonable accuracy compared to ground-based SKYNET measurements.
