  • This study investigated therapeutic effects of pelvic tilt exercise (PTE) on weight bearing and body sway during sit-to-stand (STS) on 18 hemiplegic patients who had visited the Hanyang University Seoul Hospital and Injae University Sanggyebek Hospital physiotherapy rooms. The study compared the patients with 18 normal adults. The subjects were sampled out from those who could get up independently, maintain a standing posture more than 10 seconds, understand the movements of this study and have no difficulty in performing the tasks. By executing STS in a natural way with habitual movements before and after PTE, the weight bearing was measured by using Mediance II. In order to compare the difference of weight distribution, weight bearing and body sway on affected and nonaffected sides during STS before and after PTE, the Wilcoxon Signed Ranks Test was used. The statistical significance level was based on p<.05. The results revealed that the difference of weight distribution in the hemiplegic group was significantly decreased (p<.05), whereas there was no significant difference in the healthy group (p>.05). Weight bearing loaded on the affected side was $42.53{\pm}7.65%$ and $44.20{\pm}6.32%$, respectively, in the hemiplegic group during STS before and after PTE. Weight bearing during STS after PTE is increased significantly, as compared with weight bearing before PTE (p<.05). Body sway in the hemiplegic group was significantly decreased (p<.05). As mentioned, PTE proved to be effective for improvement in weight bearing on the affected side during STS of hemiplegic patients.

  • In this paper, a new intelligent moving target tracking and surveillance system basing on the pan/tilt-embedded stereo camera system is suggested and implemented. In the proposed system, once the face area of a target is detected from the input stereo image by using a YCbCr color model and then, using this data as well as the geometric information of the tracking system, the distance and 3D information of the target are effectively extracted in real-time. Basing on these extracted data the pan/tilted-embedded stereo camera system is adaptively controlled and as a result, the proposed system can track the target adaptively under the various circumstance of the target. From some experiments using 80 frames of the test input stereo image, it is analyzed that standard deviation of the position displacement of the target in the horizontal and vertical directions after tracking is kept to be very low value of 1.82, 1.11, and error ratio between the measured and computed 3D coordinate values of the target is also kept to be very low value of 0.5% on average. From these good experimental results a possibility of implementing a new real-time intelligent stereo target tracking and surveillance system using the proposed scheme is finally suggested.

  • Flight-test is necessary at the identification of dynamic model of flight vehicle. A commonly faced problem is that once the flight-test instrumentation system is difficult to reschedule in the vehicle at the end of the test. This paper identified the parameter of dynamic model of vehicle using measurement data of non-flight test. The identification algorithm is based on frequency response identification method (CIFER) dealing with a longitudinal motion of Smart UAV 40% scale.

  • When image sensor and lens are fixed on the module, mechanical errors often induce tilt, rotation, or narrow field-of-view of the acquired image. Therefore, the optical characteristics of image sensor modules should be tested by test equipments. This paper explains how to test the optical characteristics of images sensors. It also proposes the standardized description methods of optical characteristics tests which are similar with those of image acquisition characteristics tests. The proposed method helps the test equipments to perform image acquisition characteristics tests and optical characteristics tests together.

  • Hamstring flexibility is an important factor that affects muscle performance of the lower extremities and is closely associated with sports injuries. Therefore, evaluation of flexibility is important in clinical practice. Results of evaluation are determined by types of tests and cut-off values used; therefore, accurate and detailed understanding of these is necessary before examination. Although the straight leg raise and sit and reach tests are used to evaluate hamstring extensibility, structures including the nerves, fascia, and other muscles can significantly confound the results of these tests. The knee extension test is performed at 90° of hip flexion to minimize the posterior pelvic tilt that occurs during the straight leg test. The knee extension test is most recommended for selective evaluation of hamstring flexibility. The knee extension test is classified into active and passive tests. The cut-off value is usually set at 20° for the active and at 10° for the passive knee extension test. Although a strong association is observed between the two tests, the active knee extension test is preferred in clinical practice because it can be performed by a single examiner, which serves as an advantage. Age, sex, and warm-up exercise tend to affect flexibility; therefore, results should be interpreted with caution. Detailed understanding of each flexibility test is important for reliable evaluation.

  • An analytical procedure is described to estimate the mobilized tensile forces along the effective lengths of nails. Based on the horizontal focing displacements of a nailed-soil wall experiencing outward tilt about the toe with granular soil deposit, the variation of nail-soil friction coefficient is modeled. Also, the method of overall stability analysis of a nailed-soil wall is presented using the Morgenstem-Price limit-equilibrium slice method. The results predicted by the developed procedure are compared with test measurements. The comparisons show in general good agreement.

  • Basic frictional angle is a parameter that can estimate shear strength of rock, and is a design parameter employed in slope stability analysis. Basic frictional angle generates various results in accordance with mineral composition, apart from rock surface roughness itself. This paper describes the correlation of basic frictional angle and mineral composition. The basic frictional angle is measured with the aid of the modified tilt testing apparatus, and its reliability is improved by the statistical method. Also, mineral composition is identified through the photographic analysis on rock specimen, and verified through the thin section analysis.

  • PURPOSES : This research aims to estimate the occurrence of hydroplaning on roads based on the road alignment types and rainfall intensity in Seoul. METHODS : Three types of data were used for estimation of hydroplaning in this study. The Inner Circulation Road (12.5 km) to the Bukbu Expressway (7.4 km) in Seoul was selected as the test road and data was collected for road information using a probe-vehicle. Precipitation was observed from Automatic Weather System in Seoul. These data were interpolated by applying Inverse Distance Weighted Methodology for hydroplaning estimation. Finally, the water depth information of the roads was observed using an RCM411 device. RESULTS : This study demonstrated that the cross slope with small-angle-tilt or vertical section with large-angle-tilt are the primary factors causing hydroplaning on the roads. The flow velocity on steep slope is high; however, large drainage lengths result in hydroplaning on the roads. CONCLUSIONS : This result can contribute towards the reduction of car accidents on rainy days. Furthermore, information regarding hydroplaning can be delivered to drivers more rapidly and precisely in the future.
