Modeling of 18-Pulse STATCOM for Power System Applications

  • A multi-pulse GTO based voltage source converter (VSC) topology together with a fundamental frequency switching mode of gate control is a mature technology being widely used in static synchronous compensators (STATCOMs). The present practice in utility/industry is to employ a high number of pulses in the STATCOM, preferably a 48-pulse along with matching components of magnetics for dynamic reactive power compensation, voltage regulation, etc. in electrical networks. With an increase in the pulse order, need of power electronic devices and inter-facing magnetic apparatus increases multi-fold to achieve a desired operating performance. In this paper, a competitive topology with a fewer number of devices and reduced magnetics is evolved to develop an 18-pulse, 2-level $\pm$ 100MVAR STATCOM in which a GTO-VSC device is operated at fundamental frequency switching gate control. The inter-facing magnetics topology is conceptualized in two stages and with this harmonics distortion in the network is minimized to permissible IEEE-519 standard limits. This compensator is modeled, designed and simulated by a SimPowerSystems tool box in MATLAB platform and is tested for voltage regulation and power factor correction in power systems. The operating characteristics corresponding to steady state and dynamic operating conditions show an acceptable performance.

Fault Detection for thyristors of Power Converter Module in Control Rod Control System (원자로 제어봉구동장치 제어시스템의 전력변환기 사이리스터 고장 검출)

  • In this paper, we introduce a new method detecting thyristor faults of the power converter module in Control Rod Control System. When we control the currents in each coil of Control Rod Drive Mechanism by using the current control method, the current value can follow the current reference despite the faults like the missing phase or the diode acting. Comparing the fault current values with the normal current values, the bad transient characteristics of the abnormal current can make the operations of control rods incorrect. In this case, the information from the current trends cannot be enough to detect the fault occurrence in thyristors. Instead of the coil currents, the state of thyristors can be watched by measuring the coil voltages. In the existing system of Westinghouse type, the ripple detector takes charge of this task. But this detector has some shortcomings in the point of time for fault detection, we come to devise a new fault detection method solving the problems which belong to the ripple detector.

  • 본 논문은 새로운 개념의 방전 플라즈마 소결 접합장비에 적용된 출력펄스 가변형 저전압, 대전류 사이리스터 정류기의 개발에 대하여 설명하고 있다. 6펄스 형태로 개발된 대용량 출력펄스 가변형 정류기는 공냉식으로 제작되어 기존의 대용량 정류기에서 적용한 수냉식보다 구조가 단순하며 최대 l1600A의 출력을 펄스 단위로 반복적으로 차단 및 전류하는 것이 가능하도록 설계되었다. 전류분배를 위한 버스바의 형태는 기구적인 설계만으로 간단히 대전류를 분배할 수 있도록 하였으며 디지털 연산에 의한 PLL 방식으로 입력 전압의 동기가 필요하지 않다. 시뮬레이션과 실물부하를 연결한 실험을 통해 제안한 방법 및 성능의 우수성을 조사하였다.

  • Ac-dc 싸이리스터 컨버터에서 전류기준값의 부호가 변화할 경우에 적분항 초기값을 통해 전류제어 과도특성을 개선하는 연구가 있었다. 이 논문에서는 전류기준값의 기울기에 변화가 있을 때 그 변화를 일으키기 위한 전압을 계산하고 그 값을 점호각 $\alpha$로 환산하여 시스템에 적용시켜 변곡점 부근에서의 전류제어 특성을 개선하는 방법을 제시하였다. 또한 전류기준값에 노이즈가 포함된 경우 LPF 유/무에 따른 특성변화와 노이즈가 포함되지 않은 경우 LPF 유/무에 따른 특성변화를 관찰하였다.

  • A numerical model of a three junction device is presented. It allows the simulation of the external characteristics of the PNPN family devices and in this work the simulation of gate turn-off thyristor(GTO) is particularly considered. The proposed PNPN device simulation model solves all the drawbacks presented by the previous work, simulates the GTO well, and fulfills.

  • This paper presents the current-fed inverter of a TGV-K traction system with thyristor switches using phase control and commutation techniques. The current-fed inverters have two modes of operation which consist of forced commutation and natural commutation. In forced commutation mode, at speed of less than 120km/h, commutation is forced by means of the commutation capacitors and the thyristors. Above 120km/h, the thyristors operate in natural commutation mode, according to the voltages between phases of the motors. In this paper, the power conversion theory of the TGV-K traction system and the control principle of the converter and current-fed inverter are discussed.

  • 본 논문은 해상풍력단지와 같은 대용량 신재생에너지를 송전하는데 적합한 전압형 HVDC(High Voltage DC) 중에서, 최근 실용화되어 많은 연구가 이루어지고 있는 Modular Multi-level Converter HVDC(MMC HVDC)에 대한 새로운 토폴로지를 제안한 내용이다. 대표적인 MMC HVDC는 독일의 R. Marquardt 교수가 제안한 Half-Bridge 모듈을 적용하여 MMC를 구현하는 방식으로 이는 계통에 DC 지락 사고가 발생할 경우 컨버터를 구성하는 모듈에 큰 고장 전류가 흐르게 되고 결국 모듈의 주요 구성품인 IGBT가 소손 될 수 있는 약점을 지니고 있다. 이를 보완하기 위해 각 모듈에 Thyristor를 삽입하거나 새로운 모듈을 적용하는 방식이 제안되었다. 본 논문에서는 DC 지락 고장시 큰 고장 전류를 차단할 수 있는 새로운 모듈 구성을 제안하였다. 또한 제안된 토폴로지에 대한 기본 동작을 설명하고 시뮬레이션을 통해 제안한 방식과 기존의 방식을 비교 분석 하였다.

  • This paper introduces the propulsion system(Motor Block) stabilization test result for Korean High Speed Railway(HSR). The developed propulsion system using high power semiconductor, IGCT(Integrated Gate Commutated Thyristor) consists of two PWM converter and VVVF inverter. In this paper, overall configuration of propulsion system is briefly described and stabilization tests are made to verify the developed propulsion system. The presented test results shows beatless control method of inverter output current at the 200km/h and performance test of BCH.

Steady-State Performance Analysis of an Integrated Wind Turbine Generating System in a DC Transmission System with Power Compensation System

  • An electric power compensation system for a DC transmission system with an integrated wind turbine generator is proposed. The proposed compensation system consists of a synchronous generator and a duplex reactor. This apparatus is connected to the sending-end circuit of the DC transmission system. A set of steady-state equations of the system is first derived. Then, the effect of the duplex reactor, which can eliminate the sending-end grid current distortion due to commutation of the converter, is explored. The relationships among power at the sending-end circuit are also revealed. It is shown that fluctuations in the sending-end grid power due to changes in wind velocities are compensated with the proposed system. Finally, the effects of the sending-end grid conditions on the steady-state characteristics of the system are studied.

  • 본 논문은 HVDC컨버터의 사이리스터 밸브 시험용 STC(Synthetic Test Circuit)의 전류원 특성을 개선하기 위한 제어기법을 제안한다. 기존의 저전압-대전류 회로의 보조스위치를 이용하여 사이리스터 밸브의 턴-오프 시 전류 하강 시간을 턴-온 시 전류 상승 시간과 유사하게 제어한다. 제안하는 기법에 대해 설명하고, 시뮬레이션을 통해 제안하는 기법의 타당성을 검증하였다.
