  • Many people in Korea suffer from a fear of dental treatments; however, only a few studies have focused on this population. This study assessed the effectiveness of cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT) and its interventions in reducing dental anxiety, especially when administered by trained dental staff. Using case studies, the authors analyzed the content of each session and examined the process of reducing dental anxiety. First, the authors observed that the results of both dental fear scale and subjective unit of disturbance decreased significantly with changes in cognitive distortions related to dental anxiety and that rapid improvements were noted after two therapy sessions. Second, the study reported that practicing relaxation (deep-breathing) and muscle relaxation techniques; using hand signals to indicate anxiety or discomfort; establishing an empathic relationship with the therapist; making an anxiety list; and graded insensitive and exposure along with rehearsal, were effective in coping with dental anxiety and in changing negative thoughts towards the dentist. Third, a simple cognitive behavioral intervention can be effective in reducing dental anxiety. In summary, a short-term, five-session psychological intervention with CBT produced a sustained decrease in the symptoms of dental anxiety, allowing the patients to receive the required procedures. The authors discussed the study limitations and the implication of their results on future research.

  • The development of social media in the 2000s led the unspecified individuals to band together for common interests. Social networking services served as a far-reaching tool for sharing different thoughts and interpretation of the pop culture and helped people build up close relations driven by their common interests for certain works of the pop culture. This Study introduces the TV Series as a case that displays specific patterns of communication between its producer and viewers. Producer Bryan Fuller of the Series as well as key production staffs were quite active on social networking sites with the understanding of what the audience desired and the willingness to sympathize with them, which were eagerly welcomed by the dedicated audience whose number, though, was not big. For the Hannibal production team, SNS was a means for them to just be consumers who appreciate the work instead of solely being the content provider. Their approach is quite different from unilateral marketing approaches employed in the past. Through this case, the Study aims to suggest that social networking sites serve as a powerful medium connecting producers and viewers or as an information hub, and that how interactive contents shall be delivered in the new media environment to be effective.

  • The aim of the study was to quantify and explore the causal relationships of appearance management through an analysis of one's own clothing and wearing experience, namely clothing preference, personality factors, emotion and mood, newness, familiarity of one's own clothing, and social interaction. Explorative quantitative and qualitative research was carried out using a uniformly composed sample of 10 size 12 females. A personality questionnaire was completed a short while prior to the study. A 10 day ‘wearing diary’ was administered to record where and when outfits were worn. Two questionnaires were completed measure emotion and mood, prior to changing into clothing (a daily baseline), and when they were wearing or changed clothing (dynamic mood). Qualitative information was recorded and included their thoughts and feelings other than the questionnaires, along with photographs that were taken by participants. Preference, social and newness ratings for each outfit worn were recorded after the 10 day period. SPSS analysis identified relationships and linear regression analysis identified preference indicators. Thematic analysis identified 9 themes regarding the management of mood, personality and social factors when wearing one's own clothing. The results indicated strong relationships between emotion, mood, personality and preference and how much newness and different levels of social interaction influence these factors. Participants tended to match their mood and personality with their clothing choices but in some cases also compensated. This research recognises the value of consumer psychological processes involved in appearance management, and has implications for further research into product involvement, post-purchase behaviour and retail strategies for personal shoppers.

  • This study dealt with the U.S. government's book translation project as a part of its public diplomacy to gain the Korean people's 'minds and thoughts' in the midst of cultural Cold War from the end of World War II to the late 1950s. It was found that the U.S. book translation project was begun during the U.S. military occupation of South Korea, though with minimum efforts, and reached its peak in the late 1950s, In general, the purposes of the U.S. book translation project in South Korea was as follows: to emphasize the supremacy of American political and economic systems; to criticize the irrationality of communism and conflicts in the communist societies; to increase the Korean people's understanding of the U.S. foreign policies; to publicize the achievement of the U.S. people in the areas of arts, literature, and sciences. In the selection of books for translation, any ones were excluded which might contradict to U.S. foreign policy or impair U.S. images abroad. It must be noted that publications of a few Korean writers' books were supported by the project, if they were thought to be in service for its purposes. Even some Japanese books, which were produced by the U.S. book translation project in Japan, were utilized for the best effects of the project in South Korea. It may be conceded that the U.S. book translation project contributed a little bit to the compensation for the dearth of knowledge and information in South Korea at that time. However, the project may have distorted the Korean people's perspectives toward the U.S. and world, owing to the book selection in accordance with the U.S. government's policy guidance.

  • The purpose of this study was to investigate how a science magazine played a role in filling the gap between scientists and the general public, and how it contributed to science popularization. We analyzed the linguistic features of the texts used in a science magazine. We used 12 articles (six written by journalists, and six written by scientists) from the Science Donga. Register analysis was conducted in order to define the linguistic features of the texts in terms of ideational meaning, interpersonal meaning and, textual meaning. Results of this study are as follows: (1) the articles written by journalists used a higher mental and verbal processes in which the conversations and thoughts of scientists were expressed. (2) Human agents were relatively explicit in the journalists' articles. However, they were implicit or omitted in the articles of scientists. (3) Interrogative sentences and inclusive imperative sentences, and even omissions were frequently found in the journalists' articles whereas scientists' articles mainly used declarative statements. (4) The clause density of journalist' articles and scientists' were similarly lower than that of science textbooks. (5) The information structure revealed by the patterns of Theme and Rheme that the journalists' articles used in science magazines was simpler than that of science textbooks, while the structure of scientists' articles was more complex than that of journalists'. Based on the linguistic features of the texts used in science magazines, we found that a science magazine contributes to science popularization in two faces: One is in that the articles of journalists present science contents in a way that the readers can follow with ease and feel well-acquainted. The other is that the modified articles of scientists help the general public get familiar with the culuture of science in terms of use of science language.

  • The purposes of this study were to investigate the effects of farming in greenhouses with respect to subjective fatigue symptoms among farmers and the degree of symptoms. The study compared 176 green-house farmers with 216 open field farmers using a subjective fatigue symptoms rating scale developed by the Industrial Research Institute of Fatigue, Japanese Association for industrial Hygiene. 1. With respect to complaint rates of the subjective fatigue symptoms, the results indicated that greenhouse farmers have, in order of severity, high degrees of low back pain, difficulty in collecting thoughts, and apt to forget. 2. With respect to cumulative scores of fatigue symptoms, the results indicated that both groups of farmers exhibited a lack of attentiveness and a high degree of dullness and sleepiness(category I), body projection of fatigue(category II), and difficulty in concentration(category III). 3. With respect to general characteristics, it was found that the degrees of subjective fatigue symptoms were found to be higher among females, people with lower educational levels, and the elderly, regardless of the group. 4. With respect to work related factors, farmers with more years of experiences were found to have higher degrees of subjective fatigue symptoms, except for open field farmers with less than nine years experience. Both groups of farmers were found to have high degrees of subjective fatigue symptoms when working less than eight hours a day and less than six months a year. 5. With respect to health habits, for people who get less than eight hours of sleep per day exhibited higher fatigue scores than people who get more than eight hours. People who do not smoke and drink also exhibited higher fatigue scores than people who smoke and drink. 6. The results of multiple regression showed that the risk factors related to the subjective fatigue symptoms of farmers in the greenhouse group were ages, levels of education, sex and for the comparison group, were sex. years of farming, and hours of sleep. The R-square were 12.5% in the greenhouse group and 12.1% in the comparison son group. The differences between the greenhouse and open field farmers in the degrees of fatigue symptoms were found not to be statistically significant even if the working conditions of the greenhouse farmers were poor. This may be attributed to non-work related factors, i.e., social, economical, and psychological factors among greenhouse farmers.

  • This study was made in order to evaluate the effectiveness on the activities of Community Welfare Association through the inter-agencies, carried out in 14 regions in our country as the examples. I'd like to emphasize the two main points in this study. One is whether the community practitioners have positive thoughts or not, about the evaluation on the activities through the inter-agencies. The other is how the receivers react to the inter-agency services. In order to find the solutions for two questions, the survey data of Korea Institute for Health and Social Affairs were reanalyzed. First, the attitudes of the practitioners are as follows; that is, the directors of the organizations have negative opinions about the communication, while practitioners have positive evaluations. About the performance of its roles, 68.2 percent of practitioners showed positive reactions, and 77.8 percent answered it's necessary to manage the community association continuously. The receivers have positive evaluations in general about the inter-agency services. In the comparison of the community activities between before and after, domiciliary services were improved because there was a meaningful statistical difference, however, other services such as medical care service were not bettered. And there was no difference between before and after in the CSQ.
