  • Porous polytetrafluoroethylene (PTFE) thin films are fabricated by spin-coating using a dispersion solution containing PTFE powders, and their crystalline properties are investigated after thermal annealing at various temperatures ranging from 300 to $500^{\circ}C$. Before thermal annealing, the film is densely packed and consists of many granular particles 200-300 nm in diameter. However, after thermal annealing, the film contains many voids and fibrous grains on the surface. In addition, the film thickness decreases after thermal annealing owing to evaporation of the surfactant, binder, and solvent composing the PTFE dispersion solution. The film thickness is systematically controlled from 2 to $6.5{\mu}m$ by decreasing the spin speed from 1,500 to 500 rpm. A triboelectric nanogenerator is fabricated by spin-coating PTFE thin films onto polished Cu foils, where they act as an active layer to convert mechanical energy to electrical energy. A triboelectric nanogenerator consisting of a PTFE layer and Al metal foil pair shows typical output characteristics, exhibiting positive and negative peaks during applied strain and relief cycles due to charging and discharging of electrical charge carriers. Further, the voltage and current outputs increase with increasing strain cycle owing to accumulation of electrical charge carriers during charge-discharge.

  • $Al_2O_3$ sol with long-term stability was prepared by mechanical milling. Thin films were evaluated and created for use as coating materials. The particle size of the manufactured sol was 98 nm when 2 wt% of nitric acid was added. This indicates that the viscosity of the sol is 12 cps and that it has long-term stability. The thickness of the thin films, which varied from 100 nm to 500 nm, could be managed by adjusting the draw rate and the amount of an organic additive. A thin film heated to $500^{\circ}C$ indicated a hydrophilic property against water and excellent permeability against a visible ray.

  • In this study, a molybdenum disilicide ($MoSi_2$) coating process was investigated by hydrogen reduction and Si-pack cementation. At first, the metallic Mo coating was carried out by hydrogen reduction of $MoO_3$ powder at $750^{\circ}C$ for various holding times (1, 2, 3 h) in hydrogen atmosphere. A $4.3{\mu}m$ thick metallic molybdenum thin film was formed at 3 h. $MoSi_2$ was obtained by Si-pack cementation on molybdenum thin film through hydrogen reduction processing. It was carried out using $Si:Al_2O_3:NH_4Cl=5:92:3$ (wt%) packs at $900^{\circ}C$ for various holding times (30, 60, 90 min) in Ar atmosphere. When the holding time was 90 min, a $MoSi_2$ layer was coated successfully and a $15.4{\mu}m$ thickness was observed.

  • Hydroxyapatite(HA)-coated metal composites were made by the dipping method. The specimen substrates were Ti plates with a thickness of 2 mm. The HA coating was carried out in HA-sol for 1 min by the dipping method. The concentration of HA-sol for the coating ranged from 3.28 to 9.99 wt%. Excellent coating was observed on Ti substrate dipped once in 9.99 wt% sol. Preparation of Ti plates by sandblasting provided the better environment for coating HA on Ti surface than non-treated surface. As the concentration of sol increased, the weight change and the coating thickness increased. Above 7 wt% sol, they increased sharply.

  • Objectives The aim of this study is to analyze the characteristics of the tongue coating pattern in the elderly patients with xerostomia. Methods Ninety-six elderly patients with xerostomia were recruited by advertisement and they visited the oral diseases clinics at Kyung Hee University Korean Medicine Hospital and Kyung Hee University Hospital at Gangdong from November, 2011 to August, 2013. After signifying the assent, the subjects who passed screening were enrolled this study. The subjects were evaluated on their clinical characteristics of xerostomia using visual analogue scale for xerostomia, dry mouth questionnaire, unstimulated salivary flow rate. In addition, Yin-deficiency questionnaire was used to evaluate the Yin-deficiency state and Winkel tongue coating index and Digital Tongue imagin system were used to measure the tongue coating of patients. Results The proportion of women was higher than that of men, and there were few smokers in this study population. This population had chronic and relatively severe xerostomia symptoms. Also, thin coating pattern was showed in this elderly patients with xerostomia and this result was regarded to the influence of Yin-deficiency. The thin coating patten was observed in the group with higher Yin-deficiency score. There was no difference in tongue coating between the hyposalivation and normosalivation group. Conclusion In the elderly patients with xerostomia, Yin-deficiency is might be considered as one of the main cause of xerostomia. Hence, it is thought that this patients showed the thin coating pattern. This results could be used in diagnosis and treatment for the elderly patients with xerostomia in traditional Korean medicine.

  • Polyimide (PI) multilayer thin films were prepared by spin-coating from a poly(amic acid) (PAA) and poly(amic acid) ammonium salt (PAAS). PI was prepared from pyromellitic dianhydride (PMDA) and 4,4'-oxydianiline (ODA) PAA. Different compositions of PAAS were prepared by incorporating triethylamine (TEA) into PMDA-ODA PAA in dimethylacetamide. PI multilayer thin films were spin-coated from PMDA-ODA PAA and PAAS. The PAAS comprising cationic and anionic moieties were spherical with a particle size of $20{\sim}40\;nm$. Some particles showed layers with ammonium salts, despite poor ordering. Too much salt obstructed the interaction between the polymer chains and caused phase separation. A small amount of salt did not affect the interactions of the interlayer structure but did interrupt the stacking between chains. Thermogravimetric analysis (TGA) showed that the average decomposition temperature of the thin films was $611^{\circ}C$. All the films showed almost single-step, thermal decomposition behavior. The nanostructure of the multilayer thin films was confirmed by X -ray reflectivity (XRR). The LF 43 film, which was prepared with a 4:3 molar ratio of PMDA and ODA, was comprised of uniformly spherical PAAS particles that influenced the nanostructure of the interlayer by increasing the interaction forces. This result was supported by the atomic force microscopy (AFM) data. It was concluded that the relationship between the uniformity of the PAAS particle shapes and the interaction between the layers affected the optical and thermal properties of PI layered films.

  • Objective: Different methods have been utilized to prevent enamel demineralization and other complications during orthodontic treatment. However, none of these methods can offer long-lasting and effective prevention of orthodontic complications or interventions after complications occur. Considering the photocatalytic effect of $TiO_2$ on organic compounds, we hoped to synthesize a novel bracket with a $TiO_2$ thin film to develop a photocatalytic antimicrobial effect. Methods: The sol-gel dip coating method was used to prepare $TiO_2$ thin films on ceramic bracket surfaces. Twenty groups of samples were composed according to the experimental parameters. Crystalline structure and surface morphology were characterized by X-ray diffraction and scanning electron microscopy, respectively; film thickness was examined with a surface ellipsometer. The photocatalytic properties under ultraviolet (UV) light irradiation were analyzed by evaluating the degradation ratio of methylene blue (MB) at a certain time. Antibacterial activities of selected thin films were also tested against Lactobacillus acidophilus and Candida albicans. Results: Films with 5 coating layers annealed at $700^{\circ}C$ showed the greatest photocatalytic activity in terms of MB decomposition under UV light irradiation. $TiO_2$ thin films with 5 coating layers annealed at $700^{\circ}C$ exhibited the greatest antimicrobial activity under UV-A light irradiation. Conclusions: These results provide promising guidance in prevention of demineralization by increasing antimicrobial activities of film coated brackets.
