Piezo-ceramics are special materials which transform energy from mechanical to electrical forms and vice versa. Bender elements are composite materials consisting of thin piezo-ceramics and elastic shims, and are widely used as actuators and transducers in the field of electronics, robotics, autos and mechatronics utilizing the effectiveness of energy transformation capability. In geotechnical engineering, commercial bender elements are used in laboratory as source and receiver in the measurements of soil stiffness. The elements were built by using various metal shims sandwiched between piezo-ceramics and coating over the composite in the research. A pair of elements were buried in a concrete block and used as source and receiver to measure the stiffness of the concrete. The test results were verified by comparing with the resonant column testing results. In a preliminary stage of the development of an in-situ seismic testing equipment using bender elements for soft clay materials, shear waves were generated and measured by burying the elements in the barrel of kaolinite and water mixture. The measured shear wave signals were so distinct for the first-arrival pick that applicability of the elements in the field measurements could be very promising.

The thin coating material used in the outer insulation finishing method is a finishing material mainly based on acrylic emulsion. In this study, the properties of silane modified acrylic emulsion and silica dispersed acrylic emulsion were evaluated. Experimental results showed that the silane modified acrylic emulsion had no significant effect on improving tensile strength, but was effective in improving the performance of adhesion strength, water absorption coefficient, and hot and cold repeat resistance. Silica-dispersed acrylic emulsions were effective in improving tensile strength, and at 10% substitution rate, they were effective in improving the performance of adhesion strength, water absorption coefficient and hot / cold resistance. Through this, it was judged that a composite emulsion capable of improving the performance of the acrylic emulsion could be prepared.
The electrical and mechanical properties in indium-tin-oxide films deposited on polymer substrate were examined. The materials of substrates were polyethersulfone (PES) which have gas barrier layer and anti-glare coating for plastic-based devices. The experiments were performed by rf-magnetron sputtering using a special instrument and buffer layers. Therefore, we obtained a very flat polymer substrate deposited ITO film and investigated the effects of buffer layers, and the instrument. Moreover, the influences of an oxygen partial pressure and post-deposition annealing in ITO films deposited on polymer substrates were clarified. X-ray diffraction observation, measurement of electrical property, and optical microscope observation were performed for the investigation of micro-structure and electro-mechanical properties, and they indicated that as-deposited ITO thin films are amorphous and become quasi-crystalline after adjusting oxygen partial pressure and thermal annealing above $180^{\circ}C$. As a result, we obtained 20-25 ${\Omega}/sq$ of ITO films with good transmittance (above 80 %) of oxygen contents with under 0.2 % and vacuum annealing. Furthermore, using organic buffer layer, we obtained ITO films which have a rather high electrical resistance (40-45 ${\Omega}/sq$) but have improved optical (more than 85 %) and mechanical characteristics compared to the counterparts. Consequently, a prototype reflective color plastic film LCD was fabricated using the PES polymer substrates to confirm whether the ITO films could be realized in accordance with our experimental results.

A regenerative evaporative cooler has been fabricated and tested for the evaluation of cooling performance. The regenerative evaporative cooler is a kind of indirect evaporative cooler comprised of multiple pairs of dry and wet channels. The air flowing through the dry channels is cooled without any change in the humidity and at the outlet of the dry channel a part of air is redirected to the wet channel where the evaporative cooling takes place. The regenerative evaporative cooler fabricated in this study consists of the multiple pairs of finned channels in counterflow arrangement. The fins and heat transfer plates were made of aluminum and brazed for good thermal connection. Thin porous layer coating was applied to the internal surface of the wet channel to improve surface wettability. The regenerative evaporative cooler was placed in a climate chamber and tested at various operation condition. The cooling performance is found greatly influenced by the evaporation water flow rate. To improve the cooling performance, the evaporation water flow rate needs to be minimized as far as the even distribution of the evaporation water is secured. At the inlet condition of $32^{\circ}C$ and 50%RH, the outlet temperature was measured at $22^{\circ}C$ which is well below the inlet wet-bulb temperature of $23.7^{\circ}C$.

Steel tire cords were coated via RF plasma polymerization of acetylene and butadiene gas in order to enhance adhesion to rubber compounds. Adhesion of tire cords was measured by TCAT and T-test as a function of type of gas, plasma powder, treatment time, gas pressure and Ar gas etching. Some samples were subjected to aging study in distilled water at $80^{\circ}C$ for a period of 7 days. After testing, tire cords were analysed by SEM to elucidate the adhesion mechanism. The highest adhesion values were obtained at 20W, 2min and 25mtorr for acetylene plasma polymerization, and l0W, 4min, 25mtorr for butadiene plasma polymerization. However, Ar plasma etching did not affect adhesion, while the adhesion of tire cords increased rather than decreased, contrary to expectations. It was not possible to elucidate failure mode by SEM, owing to the rough surface of the tire and the thin plasma polymer coating layer.
We have investigated the possibility of recycling of an organic material that is wasted during thermal evaporation. To this end, we have collected a wasted organic material (N,N'-diphenly-N,N'-bis(1,1'-biphenyl)-4,4'-diamine(NPB)) from a vacuum chamber, purified it by recrystallization, and fabricated bilayer organic light-emitting diodes (OLEDs) with the recycled NPB. It is found that the surface roughness of thin films coated with the purified NPB is much enhanced. OLEDs fabricated by thermal evaporation of the purified NPB show lower device efficiency than OLEDs with the original NPB. However, the power efficiency of OLED fabricated by spin coating of the purified NPB is comparable with that of OLED with the original NPB. Therefore, such a recycling method by recrystallization would be more suitable for solution-processed OLEDs.
In order to reduce reflectance of soda-lime glass having average reflectance of 7.35% and refractive index of 1.53, single (SiO2), double (SiO2/20SiO2-80ZrO2), and triple (SiO2/ZrO2/75SiO2-25ZrO2) layers were designed and fabricated on the glass substrate by Sol-Gel method. Stble sols of SiO2-ZrO2 binary system for antireflective (AR) coatings were synthesized with tetraethyl orthosilicate (TEOS) and zirconium n-butoxide as precursors and ethylacetoacetate (EAcAc) as a chelating agent in an atmosphere environment. Films were deposited on soda-lime glass at the withdrawal rates of 3~11 cm/min using the prepared polymeric sols by dip-coating and they were heat-treated at 45$0^{\circ}C$ for 10 min to obtain homogeneous, amorphous and crack-free films. In case of SiO2-ZrO2 binary system, refractive index of film increased with an increase of ZrO2 mol%. Designed optical constant of films could be obtained through varying the withdrawal rate. In the visible region (380~780nm), reflectance was measured with UV/VIS/NIR Spectrophotometer. Average reflectances of the prepared single-layer [SiO2 (n=1.46, t=103nm)], double-layer [SiO2 (n=1.46, t=1-4nm)/20SiO2-80ZrO2 (n=1.81, t=82nm)], and triple-layer [SiO2 (n=1.46, t=104nm)/ZrO2 (n=1.90, t=80nm)/75SiO2-25ZrO2 (n=1.61, t=94 nm)] were 4.74%, 0.75% and 0.38%, respectively.

The interfacial adhesion strengths between screen-printed Ag film and epoxy resin-coated polyimide were evaluated by $180^{\circ}$ peel test method. Measured peel strength value was initially around $164.0{\pm}24.4J/m^2$, while the heat treatment during 24h at $120^{\circ}C$ increase peel strength up to $220.8{\pm}19.2J/m^2$. $85^{\circ}C/85%$ RH temperature/humidity treatment decrease peel strength to $84.1{\pm}50.8J/m^2$, which seems to be attributed to hydrolysis bonding reaction mechanism between metal and adhesive epoxy resin coating layer.

The structure zone model has been used to provide an overview of the relationship between the microstructure of the films deposited by PVD and the most prominent deposition condition.s. B.AMovchan and AV.Demchishin have proposed it firstls such model. They concluded that the general features of the resulting structures could be correlated into three zones depending on $T/T_m$. Here T m is the melting point of the coating material and T is the substrate temperature in kelvines. Zone 1 ($T/Tm_) is dominated by tapered macrograins with domed tops, zone 2 ($O.3) by columnar grains with denser boundaries and zone 3 ($T/T_m>O.5$) by equiaxed grains formed by recrystallization. J.AThomton has extended this model to include the effect of the sputtering gas pressure and found a fourth zone termed zone T(transition zone) consisting of a dense array of poorly defined fibrous grains. R.Messier found that the zone I-T boundary (fourth zone of Thorton) varies in a fashion similar to the film bias potential as a function of gas pressure. However, there has not nearly enough model for explaining the change in morphology with crystal orientation of the films. The structure zone model only provide an information about the morphology of the deposited film. In general, the nucleation and growth mechanism for granular and fine structure of the deposited films are very complex in an PVD technique because the morphology and orientation depend not only on the substrate temperature but also on the energy of deposition of the atoms or ions, the kinetic mechanism between metal atoms and argon or nitrogen gas, and even on the presence of impurities. In order to clarify these relationship, AI and Mg thin films were prepared on SPCC steel substrates by PVD techniques. The influence of gas pressures and bias voltages on their crystal orientation and morphology of the prepared films were investigated by SEM and XRD, respectively. And the effect of crystal orientation and morphology of the prepared films on corrosion resistance was estimated by measuring polarization curves in 3% NaCI solution.

In Liquid Crystal Display (LCD) manufacturing, the organic over coat materials over coat materials for insulation layer of color filter with acryl ate was widely used. Therefore, we approach that the organic overcoat material can use to insulation layer for color filter and liquid crystal (LC) alignment layer in this research. The LC aligning capabilities was successful stuided for the first time. The organic overcoat layer and polymer layer was coated by spin-coating. In order to characterize the LC alignment, electric optic and residual DC and atomic force microscopy (AFM) image was used. The good LCD aligning capabilities treated on the organic overcoat thin film surfaces with ion beam exposure of $45^{\circ}$ above ion beam energy density of 1200 eV can be achieved. Also the good LCD alignment capabilities treated polymer on surfaces with ion beam exposure of $45^{\circ}$ above ion beam energy density of 1800 eV can be achieved. Comparing electro-optical characteristics between the Polyimide (PI) and the overcoat, the resultant transmittance of the overcoat considerably matched that of the PI and the residual DC also exhibited similar features with the PI.
