  • Bonding composite materials to structural members for strengthening purpose has received a considerable attention in recent years. The major problem when using bonded FRP or steel plates to strengthen existing structures is the high interfacial stresses that may be built up near the plate ends which lead to premature failure of the structure. As a result, many researchers have developed several analytical methods to predict the interface performance of bonded repairs. In this paper, a numerical solution using finite - difference method is used to calculate the interfacial stress distribution in beams strengthened with FRP plate having a tapered ends with different thinning profiles. These latter, can significantly reduce the stress concentration. In the present theoretical analysis, the adherend shear deformations are taken into account by assuming a parabolic shear stress through the thickness of both beam and bonded plate. Numerical results from the present analysis are presented to demonstrate the advantages of use the tapers in design of strengthened beams.

  • In order to protect the patterned mask from contamination during lithography process, pellicle has become a critical component for Extreme Ultraviolet (EUV) lithography technology. According to EUV pellicle requirements, the pellicle should have high EUV transmittance and robust mechanical property. In this study, silicon nitride, which is well-known for its remarkable mechanical property, was used as a pellicle membrane material to achieve high EUV transmittance. Since long silicon wet etching process time aggravates notching effect causing stress concentration on the edge or corner of etched structure, the remaining membrane is prone to fracture at the end of etch process. To overcome this notching effect and attain high transmittance, we began preparing a rather thick (200 nm) $SiN_x$ membrane which can be stably manufactured and was thinned into 43 nm thickness with HF wet etching process. The measured EUV transmittance shows similar values to the simulated result. Therefore, the result shows possibilities of HF thinning processes for $SiN_x$ EUV pellicle fabrication.

  • Recently, geosynthetic clay liners (GCLs) have increasingly been used to replace compacted clay liners (CCLs) in composite liner systems. Since the introduction of GCLs to waste containment facilities, one of the major concerns about their use has been the hydraulic equivalency to CCLs as required by regulations. Laboratory test results and more recently field observations show that the thickness, or mass per unit area, of hydrated bentonite in a GCL can decrease under normal stress, especially around zones of stress concentration or nonuniform stresses, such as a rock or roughness in the subgrade, a leachate sump, or wrinkles in an overlying geomembrane. This paper presents field case histories that confirm the laboratory observations of bentonite migration and the effect of bentonite migration on hydraulic equivalency and contaminant transport through a GCL.

  • The Pseudo-MOSFET measurements technique has been used for the electrical characterization of the nano SOL Silicon islands for the Pseudo-MOS measurements were fabricated by selective etching of surface silicon film with dry or wet etching to examine the effects of the etching process on the device properties. The characteristics of the Pseudo-MOS was not changed greatly in the case of thick SOI film which was 205 nm. However the characteristics of the device was dependent on etching process in the case of less than 100 nm thick SOI film. The sub 100nm SOI was obtained by thinning the silicon film of standard thick SOI. The thickness of SOI film was varied from 88 nm to 44 nm by chemical etching. The etching process effects on the properties of pseudo-MOSFET characteristics, such as mobility, turn-on voltage, and drain current transient. The etching process dependency is greater in the thinner SOI and related to original SOI wafer quality.

  • Background The nasolabial flap is ideal for reconstruction of the nasal alar subunit due to its proximity, color and contour match, and well-placed donor scar. When raised as a random-pattern flap, there is a risk of vascular compromise to the tip with increased flap length and aggressive flap thinning. Surgical delay can greatly improve the chances of tip survival, allowing the harvest of longer flaps with greater reach. Methods We describe our technique of lengthening the nasolabial flap through multiple delay procedures. A bipedicled flap was first raised and then transferred as a unipedicled flap with a 6:1 length-to-width ratio. During the delay process, the flap tip was thinned to the subdermal layer. Results In our case series of seven patients, defects as far as the medial canthal area and contralateral ala were reconstructed successfully with no incidence of tip necrosis or flap loss. The resultant flaps were thin enough to be folded over for the reconstruction of alar rim defects. Conclusions We highlight the success of our surgical technique in creating thin and robust nasolabial flaps for the reconstruction of full-thickness defects around the nose.

  • Objective: Alveolar bone loss is a common adverse effect of intrusion treatment. Mandibular incisors are prone to dehiscence and fenestrations as they suffer from thinner alveolar bone thickness. Methods: Thirty skeletal class II patients treated with mandibular intrusion arch therapy were included in this study. Lateral cephalograms and cone-beam computed tomography images were taken before treatment (T1) and immediately after intrusion arch removal (T2) to evaluate the tooth displacement and the alveolar bone changes. Pearson's and Spearman's correlation was used to identify risk factors of alveolar bone loss during the intrusion treatment. Results: Deep overbite was successfully corrected (P < 0.05), accompanied by mandibular incisor proclination (P < 0.05). There were no statistically significant change in the true incisor intrusion (P > 0.05). The labial and lingual vertical alveolar bone levels showed a significant decrease (P < 0.05). The alveolar bone is thinning in the labial crestal area and lingual apical area (P < 0.05); accompanied by thickening in the labial apical area (P < 0.05). Proclined incisors, non-extraction treatment, and increased A point-nasion-B point (ANB) degree were positively correlated with alveolar bone loss. Conclusions: While the mandibular intrusion arch effectively corrected the deep overbite, it did cause some unwanted incisor labial tipping/flaring. During the intrusion treatment, the alveolar bone underwent corresponding changes, which was thinning in the labial crestal area and thickening in the labial apical area vice versa. And increased axis change of incisors, non-extraction treatment, and increased ANB were identified as risk factors for alveolar bone loss in patients with mandibular intrusion therapy.

  • Objectives Osteoporosis is a common disease in adults with prevalence rate of more than 40%, and occurs more to female than to male. The purpose of this study is to identify the effect of Bia-hwan ($F{\acute{e}}i{\acute{e}}r$-$w{\acute{a}}n$) on the osteoporosis of ovariectomized rats. Methods 24 female rats were randomly assigned to a SHAM group, a control group, and a BAH group. Ovaries of the control group and the BAH group were extracted. After than, general animal feed were given to the SHAM group and the control group, animal feed contained BAH were given to the BAH group through mouths of them. After 8 weeks, rats were sacrificed and their weight, calcium, phosphorus, estradiol, total-cholesterol, triglyceride, ALP, albumin, AST, ALT, the weight of femur and tibia ash per body ratio, both area and thickness of trabecular bone, the area of osteoblast and the number of osteoclast were measured. Results The level of calcium, phosphorus, AST in the serum of the BAH group increased significantly compared to the control group. There was no significant difference between the control group and the BAH group in the level of estradiol, total-cholesterol, triglyceride, ALP, albumin, and ALT in the serum. There was no significant difference between the control group and the BAH group in the weight of femur and tibia ash per body ratio. The thickness of trabecular of the BAH group increased significantly compared to the control group, but there was no significant difference in the trabecular area. The area of osteoblast and the number of osteoclast of the BAH group decreased significantly compared to the control group. Conclusions From the results of the above study, oral intake of BAH can inhibit the decrease of calcium, phosphorus in blood and prevent the thinning process of the trabecular by suppressing activation of osteoclast. Thus, BAH may have effects on the treatment and prevention of osteoporosis.

  • Sodium borohydride, $NaBH_4$, shows a number of advantages as hydrogen source for portable proton exchange membrane fuel cells (PEMFCs). Properties of $NaBH_4$ hydrolysis reaction using unsupported Co-P-B Co-B, catalyst at high concentration $NaBH_4$ solution were studied. In order to enhance the hydrogen generation yield at high concentration of $NaBH_4$, the effect of catalyst type, $NaBH_4$ concentration and recovery of condensing water on the hydrogen yield were measured. The yield of hydrogen evolution increased as the boron ratio increased in preparation process of Co-P-B catalyst. The hydrogen yield decreased as the concentration increased from 20 wt% to 25 wt% in $NaBH_4$ solution during hydrolysis reaction using 1:5 Co-P-B catalyst. Maximum hydrogen yield of 96.4% obtained by recovery of condensing water and thinning of catalyst pack thickness in reactor using Co-P-B with Co-B catalyst and 25 wt% $NaBH_4$ solution.

  • The macro-and microstructure of Chinese cabbage used for Korean Kimchi preparation were examined and the texture characteristics of raw cabbage leaf and salted or blanched leaves were evaluated by cutting test. The length and thickness of leaf stalk increased with the order of pyllotaxis, but the thinning effect of outermost leaves was observed. The microstructure of cut-profile of stalk showed densely compacted vascular systems aligned in the center of stalk and the outer space was filled with large parenchima cells. Due to this structure, characteristic cutting curves were obtained by cutting test, composing three peaks of cutting for inner surface skin, center vascular system and outer surface skin. Salting and blanching increased the cutting force mainly due to the increase of Gutted cell wall number caused by the structure collapse.
