  • Optimum design of a viscoelastic damping layer which is unconstrainedly cohered on a steel plate is discussed from the viewpoint of the modal loss factor. Themodal loss factor is analyzed by using the energy method to the base steel plate and cohered damping layer. Optimum distributions of the viscoelastic damping layer for modes are obtained by sequentially changing the position of a piece of damping layer to another position which contributes to maximizing the modal loss factors. Analytical procedure performed by using this method simulated for 3 fundamental modes of an edge-fixed plate. Simulated results indicate that the modal loss factor ratios can be increase by as much as 210%, or more, by optimizing the thickness distribution of the damping layer to two times of the initial condition which is entirely covered. Optimum configurations for the modes are revealed by positions where added damping treatments become most effective. The calculated results by this method are validated by comparison with the experimental results and the calculated results obtained by the Ross-Ungar-Kerwin's model in the case of the layer is uniformly treated over the steel plate.

  • In the plating process of the IC chips for the printed circuit board manufacturing, specification limits for the plating thickness are usually given but its target is not specified in most cases. When the target is not specified, the center point of the specification limits is used instead. When the process capability is large, however, the use of the center point for the target is not the best choice in the context of the total cost. In this paper, the total cost is defined in terms of the production cost and the loss function, and then the optimal choice for target is studied in order to minimize the expected loss. As a consequence, the optimal choice of the target reduces the expected loss significantly, while reducing the process capability slightly.

  • The noise sources in ship and offshore structure have an influence on adjacent receiving area through a partition between noise sources and receiving area. The partition in ship is usually made of stiffened plate. Sound transmission loss (STL) of the partition at high frequency could be improved by additional installation of insulation or wall panel. At low frequency, however, it is very difficult and needs an increase of plate thickness which causes a considerable weight increase of ship. In this paper, we have investigated the effect of the bulkhead boundary condition. From measurement result, we found that the bulkhead boundary condition can affect a lot in STL, especially at low frequency range. Finally, we get the 5dB increase in STL through the modification of boundary condition.

  • This paper presents the double side PM synchronous motor/generator for core loss reduction in flywheel energy storage system. The use of double PM rotor causes the elimination of core loss in no-load state of machine. Because flywheel rotational speed is reduced by core loss, double PM rotor is very effective in flywheel system. This paper suggests two types of double side PM rotor, Halbach magnetized array and parallel magnetized array. And characteristic comparison according to thickness of rotor back core is performed.

  • The objective of this study is to verify the secondary flow and the total pressure loss distribution in the boundary layer fence installed linear turbine cascade passage and to propose an appropriate height of the boundary layer fence which shows the best loss reduction among the simulated fences. In this study three different boundary layer fence was installed which have different height. This study was performed by numerical method and the result showed the boundary layer fence which has the height of one third of the inlet boundary layer thickness showed the best loss reduction rate.

  • The Regulatory Guide 1.82 recommends an analysis of hydraulic performance for sump of ECCS (Emergency Core Cooing System) when LOCA(Loss of Coolant Accident) occurs in a nuclear power plant. The present study deals with 3-dimensional, unsteady, turbulent and two-phase flow simulation to examine the behavior of mixture of reactor coolant and debris near the floor of containment building in conjunction with appropriate assumptions. The dispersed solid model has been adjusted to the interfacial momentum transfer between reactor coolant and debris. According to the results, the counterclockwiserecirculation zone had been formed in the region between sump and connection aisle about 376 second after LOCA occurs. The debris thickness accumulated on a sump screen periodically increases or decreases up to 2000 second, afterwards its peak decreases.

  • Some insulating materials are tested and analyzed with variables to obtain the reliable pressboard which is located to core and coil of high voltage transformer. The high voltage transformer is used in electrical power system and operating reliability. Optimization possibility of pressboard shape including electrical insulation performance could be achieved by analysis simulation. Using insulating pressboard, which is made by mold applied eddy current loss, it could be measured the influences of moisture content for electrical properties. As a result, it is to contribute to improve the performance and ensure the reliability of the pressboard by investigating electrical strength according to the variation oil temperature. In addition pressboard thickness is important design factor to ensure electrical strength in high voltage transformer.

  • Length of an unconstrained viscoelastic damping layer on beams is determined to maximize loss factor using a numerical search method. The fractional derivative model can describe damping characteristics of the viscoelastic damping material, and is used to represent nonlinearity of complex modulus with frequencies and temperatures. Equivalent flexural rigidity of the unconstrained beam is obtained using Ross, Ungar, Kerwin(RUK) equation. The loss factors of partially covered unconstrained beam are calculated by a modal strain energy method. Optimal lengths of the unconstrained viscoelastic damping layer of beams are obtained with respect to ambient temperatures and thickness ratios of beam and damping layer.

  • The Extra-high voltage XLPE cable is characterized by low transmission loss, large capacity, and high reliability. Conventionally, for XLPE cables of l54kV and above, aluminium sheath was used to be moisture barrier (thus preventing water tree deterioration of the insulation) and to protect cable core from physical stresses. However, as transmission capacity of the cable increases, so does the cable diameter and the corresponding aluminium sheath outer diameter and thickness. As a result, eddy-current loss in the sheath is increased, limiting the maximum current capacity of the cable itself. As an alternative to aluminium sheath, we have adopted stainless steel sheath with non-magnetic properties and a large resistivity, The new XLPE cable with stainless-steel sheath (CSZV cable) has drastically reduced eddy-current loss in the sheath.

  • The action of rainwater on reinforced concrete walls has led to an erosion phenomenon. The erosion is very apparent when the walls are inclined. This phenomenon is studied on a real site characterized by different architectural forms. The site dates back to the seventies; it was designed by the architect, modeler of concrete, Oscar Nie Meyer. On this site, the erosion has damaged the cover of the reinforcements and reduced its depth. In this research work, a method of quantification of the erosion is developed. Using this method, the amount of mass loss by erosion was measured on imprints taken from the site. The results are expressed by the rate of mass loss by erosion; they are associated to the height and the inclination of the walls. Moreover, laboratory analysis was carried out on samples taken from the site. From this study, it is recommended to consider the erosion, in any building code, to determine the cover thickness.
