  • In this study, a new steel cylindrical shell configuration of the dissipative energy device is proposed to improve lateral ductility and to reduce the damage of the structures against seismic forces. Four nested-eccentric- cylindrical shells are used to constructing this device; therefore, this proposed device is named nested-eccentric-cylindrical shells damper (NECSD). The particular configuration of the nested-eccentric-cylindrical shells is applied to promote the mechanical characteristics, stability, and overall performance of the damper in cyclic loads. Shell-type components are performed as a combination of series and parallel non-linear springs into the in-plan plastic deformation. Numerical analysis with respect to dimensional variables are used to calculate the mechanical characteristics of the NECSD, and full-scale testing is conducted for verifying the numerical results. The parametric study shows the NECSD with thin shells were more flexible, while devices with thick shells were more capacious. The results from numerical and experimental studies indicate that the NECSD has a stable behavior in hysteretic loops with highly ductile performance, and can provide appropriate dissipated energy under cyclic loads.

  • The present study aims to analyze the magneto-electro-elastic (MEE) vibration of a functionally graded carbon nanotubes reinforced composites (FG-CNTRC) cylindrical shell. Electro-magnetic loads are applied to the structure and it is located on an elastic foundation which is simulated by visco-Pasternak type. The properties of the nano-composite shell are assumed to be varied by temperature changes. The third-order shear deformation shells theory is used to describe the displacement components and Hamilton's principle is employed to derive the motion differential equations. To obtain the results, Navier's method is used as an analytical solution for simply supported boundary condition and the effect of different parameters such as temperature variations, orientation angle, volume fraction of CNTs, different types of elastic foundation and other prominent parameters on the natural frequencies of the structure are considered and discussed in details. Design more functional structures subjected to multi-physical fields is of applications of this study results.

  • Natural frequency behavior of graphene platelets reinforced composite (GPL-RC) joined truncated conical-cylindrical- conical shells resting on Winkler-type elastic foundation is presented in this paper for the first time. The rule of mixture and the modified Halpin-Tsai approach are applied to achieve the mechanical properties of the structure. Four different graphene platelets patterns are considered along the thickness of the structure such as GPLA, GPLO, GPLX, GPLUD. Finite element procedure according to Rayleigh-Ritz formulation has been used to solve 2D-axisymmetric elasticity equations. Application of 2D axisymmetric elasticity theory allows thickness stretching unlike simple shell theories, and this gives more accurate results, especially for thick shells. An efficient parametric investigation is also presented to show the effects of various geometric variables, three different boundary conditions, stiffness of elastic foundation, dispersion pattern and weight fraction of GPLs nanofillers on the natural frequencies of the joined shell. Results show that GPLO and BC3 provide the most rigidity that cause the most natural frequencies among different BCs and GPL patterns. Also, by increasing the weigh fraction of nanofillers, the natural frequencies will increase up to 200%.

  • Here, the dynamic response characteristics of thick cross-ply laminated composite cylindrical shells are studied using a higher-order displacement model. The formulation accounts for the nonlinear variation of the in-plane and transverse displacements through the thickness, and abrupt discontinuity in slope of the in-plane displacements at any interface. The effect of inplane and rotary inertia terms is included. The analysis is carried out using finite element approach. The influences of various terms in the higher-order displacement field on the free vibrations, and transient dynamic response characteristics of cylindrical composite shells subjected to thermal and mechanical loads are analyzed.

  • A new three-node triangular shell element based on higher order zig-zag theory is developed for laminated composite shells with multiple delaminations. The present higher order zig-zag shell theory is described in a general curvilinear coordinate system and in general tensor notation. All the complicated curvatures of surface including twisting curvatures can be described in an exact manner in the present shell element because this element is based on geometrically exact surface representation. The displacement field of the proposed finite element includes slope of deflection, which requires continuity between element interfaces. Thus the nonconforming shape function of Specht's three-node triangular plate bending element is employed to interpolate out-of-plane displacement. The present element passes the bending and twisting patch tests in flat surface configurations. The developed element is evaluated through the eigenvalue problems of composite cylindrical shells with multiple delaminations. Through the numerical examples it is demonstrated that the proposed shell element is efficient because it has minimal degrees of freedom per node. The present shell element should serve as a powerful tool in the prediction of natural frequency and modes of multi-layered thick laminated shell structures with arbitrary-shaped multiple delaminations.

  • The present paper is concerned with the investigation of propagation of thermoelastic media, the finite difference technique is used to obtain the solution for the uncoupled dynamic thermoelastic stress problem in a non-homogeneous orthrotropc thick cylindrical shell. In implementing the method, the linear dynamic thermoelasticity equations are used with the appropriate boundary and initial conditions. Thermal shock stress becomes of significant magnitude due to stress wave propagation which is initiated at the boundaries by sudden thermal loading. Numerical results have been given and illustrated graphically in each case considered. The presented results indicate that the effect of inhomogeneity is very pronounced.

  • Highly reliable and versatile methods artificial intelligence (AI) have found multiple application in the different fields of science, engineering and health care system. In the present study, we aim to utilize AI method to investigated vibrations in the human leg bone. In this regard, the bone geometry is simplified as a thick cylindrical shell structure. The deep neural network (DNN) is selected for prediction of natural frequency and critical buckling load of the bone cylindrical model. Training of the network is conducted with results of the numerical solution of the governing equations of the bone structure. A suitable optimization algorithm is selected for minimizing the loss function of the DNN. Generalized differential quadrature method (GDQM), and Hamilton's principle are used for solving and obtaining the governing equations of the system. As well as this, in the results section, with the aid of AI some predictions for improving the behaviors of the various sport systems will be given in detail.

  • This study aims to develop a computerized program for analysis of the ground-supported cylindrical shell structure with step varied section and to find out its mechanical characteri- stics through application of the developed program to the analysis of a ensiled farm silo as a model structure. The thickness of wall and bottom-plate of farm silo is assumed to be step-varied and its detailed structural dimensions are presented in Tab. 1 and 2. Several numerical case studies show that sectional stresses of the sample structures are largely reduced by adopting "varied section" design technique. And, other major results ob- tained from this study are summarize4 as follows ; 1. The variation of wall-thickness has a great influence on bending stresses of wall. Ho- wever, the larger the relative thickness of bottom-plate is, the smaller the influence is. 2. The magnitude of thickness of projecting toe of bottom-plate has negligible effect on sectional stresses 3. The conventional design methodology, which assumes the bottom edge of wall as clam- ped on ground, is proved to be discarded through the numerical analysis. 4. It is found that the "varied section" design technique should get similar effects as in the case of thick bott6m-plate having uniform thickness. 5. The variation of wall-thickness has a considerable effect on the bending stresses of bo- ttom-plate. Especially, this phenomenon is very remarkable in its projecting toe. In some cases. the negative bending moment may be acted on.
