In order to substitute current aluminum sabot and to increase the penetration performance of the kinetic energy projectiles, the research and development program for composites sabot has been conducted. For carbon/epoxy composites sabot, unidirectional carbon fiber reinforced epoxy prepreg was chosen and thick sectioned composites preforms with the different fiber angles along the circumferential direction of sabot were prepared by compression molding under the careful processing conditions at $150^{\circ}C$ for 1hour with $70kgf/cm^2$ curing pressure. The composites sabot demonstrated a weight reduction by approximately 30% than that of current aluminum sabot. The muzzle velocity of a kinetic energy projectile with composites sabot was measured to be about 63m/s higher than that with aluminum sabot. These results imply that the penetration performance is expected to be considerably increased when the composite sabot is applied to the kinetic energy projectiles.
The compression molding is widely used in the automotive industry to produce products that are large, thin, lightweight and stiff. The molded product is formed by squeezing a fiber-reinforced plastic composites. During a molding process of fiber reinforced thermoplastic composites, control of filling patterns in mold, orientation and distribution of fibers are needed to predict the effects of molding parameters on the flow characteristics. It is the objective of this paper to develop an isothermal compression molding simulation that can handle both thin and thick charges and motion of the flow front, and can predict pressure distributions and accurate velocity gradients. The composites are treated as an incompressible Newtonian fluid. The effects of slip parameter $\alpha$ and extensional/shear viscosity ratio $\zeta$ on the mold filling parameters are also discussed.
The anisotropy in coefficient of thermal expansion (CTE) between the in-plane and out-of-plane of 3-dimensional thick composite structures induces residual stresses and the large void content due to insufficient compaction of fabric composites, which results in low interlaminar strengths. In order to reduce the through thickness CTE and the void content, in this work, carbon fabric phenolic laminates were compacted by pressure generated by autoclave and a compressive jig, from which the through-thickness CTEs and the void contents were measured. From the measurement, it was found that the through-thickness CTE and the void content had different characteristics from ordinary composites due to gas produced during the cure reaction of phenolic resin.

A constitutive model was proposed to study the effects of fiber waviness on the elastic properties of unidirectional composite materials. The predictions showed that the degree of fiber waviness significantly affected the elastic properties of composite materials. A special fabrication technique was developed for thic composite materials with various fiber waviness ratios. Tensile, compressive and flexural tests were conducted to obtain the elastic properties of composite materials with fiber waviness experimentally. The experimental result were in good agreement with the predictions.

In this work, we developed the 0-3 type piezoelectric composite to incorporate the advantages of both ceramic and polymer. The PVDF-PZT composites were fabricated with various mixing ratio by 3-roll mi11 mixer. The composite solutions were coated on ITO bottom-electrode deposited on PET (polyethylene terephthalate) polymer film by the conventional screen-printing method. After depositing the top-electrode of silver-paste, 4kV/mm of DC field was applied at $120^{\circ}C$ for 30min to poling the 0-3 composite film. The value of $d_{33}$ was increased as the PZT weight percent was increases. But the $g_{33}$ value showed the maximum at 65 wt% of PZT powder.
Recently, development of a small aircraft has been carried out for the BASA(Bilateral Aviation Safety Agreement) program in Korea. This aircraft adopted all composite structures for environmental friendly by low fuel consumption due to its lightness behavior. However the composite structure has disadvantage which is very weak against impact damages. Therefore, damage allowable design of aircraft structure must be performed considering compressive fracture strength. This point is very important for certification of composite structure aircraft. In this paper, it is performed the research on damage tolerance of thick laminate adopting aircraft structure. The damage tolerance of three different types of thick laminates such as no damage, open hole and impact damage is evaluated under compression loading.

In this paper, a trade-off design and fabrication of IPMC(Ionic Polymer Metal Composites) as an actuator for a flapping device have been described. Experiments for the internal solvent loss of IPMCs have been conducted for various combinations of cation and solvent in order to find out the best combination of cation and solvent for minimal solvent loss and higher actuation force. From the experiments, it was found that IPMCs with heavy water as their solvent could operate longer. Relations between length/thickness and tip force of IPMCs were also quantitatively identified for the actuator design from the tip force measurement of 200, 400, 640, and $800{\mu}m$ thick IPMCs. All IPMCs thicker than $200{\mu}m$ were processed by casting $Nafion^{TM}$ solution. The shorter and thicker IPMCs tended to generate higher actuation force but lower actuation displacement. To improve surface conductivity and to minimize solvent evaporation due to electrically heated electrodes, gold was sputtered on both surfaces of the cast IPMCs by the Physical Vapor Deposition(PVD) process. For amplification of a short IPMC's small actuation displacement to a large flapping motion, a rack-and-pinion type hinge was used in the flapping device. An insect wing was attached to the IPMC flapping mechanism for its flapping test. In this test, the wing flapping device using the $800{\mu}m$ thick IPMC. could create around $10^{\circ}{\sim}85^{\circ}$ flapping angles and $0.5{\sim}15Hz$ flapping frequencies by applying $3{\sim|}4V$.
An investigation was carried out to compare the pulp responses against a few type of composite and streptococcus mutans contamination under the zinc oxide eugenol cement, and also confirmed pulpal responses of various composites with or without base. Seventy eight teeth from 6 dogs were employed and divided into 6 groups. Class V cavities were prepared on each tooth routinely with low speed dental engine. Paper disc about 0.3mm thick was immersed in the BHI broth in which streptococcus mutans had been enriched and the disc was inserted on the cavity floor prior to filling. Scotch bond puls Silux as Bis-GMA system composite resin and Helimolar as urethane system composite resin were adopted. Control group: Zinc-Oxide Eugenol cement filling Experimental groups: Group 1. Scotch bond + Silux filling with Dycal base Group 2. Heliomolar filling with Dycal base Group 3. Scotch bond + Silux filling without base Group 4. Heliomolar filling without base Group 5. Streptococcus mutans application. All cavities were sealed with thick ZOE cement to avoid marginal leakage. Postoperative intervals of 1, 2, 3, 4, 5 and 6 weeks teeth were carefully extracted, processed and stained with Hematoxylin and Eosin. The results were as follows: 1. S. mutans application group and composites without any base showed more severe pupal response than control group and dyca based groups. 2. The experimental group of S. mutans application showed severe response in the early stage compared to the two groups of composite resin without base, but no significant difference was found following periods. 3. The difference of pulpal response is not significant between Bis-GMA system and urethane system. 4. Streptococcus mutans application group and composites without base groups showed the evidence of histologic recovery at the six week cases and the large amount of reparative dentin was the prominent feature. 5. Pulp responses against every material were inclined to normal according to the time elapsed.

A pure hafnium-carbide (HfC) coating layer was deposited onto carbon/carbon (C.C) composites using a vacuum plasma spray system. By adopting a SiC buffer layer, we successfully integrated C.C composites with a $100-{\mu}m-thick$ protective coating layer of HfC. Compared to the conventional chemical vapor deposition process, the HfC coating process by VPS showed increased growth rate, thickness, and hardness. The growth behavior and morphology of HfC coatings were investigated by FE-SEM, EDX, and XRD. From these results, it was shown that the addition of a SiC intermediate layer provided optimal surface conditions during the VPS procedure to enhance adhesion between C.C and HfC (without delamination). The thermal ablation test results shows that the HfC coating layer perfectly protected inner C.C layer from thermal ablation and oxidation. Consequently, we expect that this ultra-high temperature ceramic coating method, and the subsequent microstructure that it creates, can be widely applied to improve the thermal shock and oxidation resistance of materials under ultra-high temperature environments.
It is known that the elastic modulus, maximum stress, and maximum strain of fiber-reinforced polymer composites are affected by high pressure. Fracture behavior is also known to be affected by high pressure. In this work, the pressure effect on the compressive fracture toughness of thick quasi-isotropic composites was investigated. Dog-bone type specimens of stacking sequence, [0$^{\circ}$/$\pm$45$^{\circ}$/90$^{\circ}$]$_{11s}$ were used. Compressive fracture tests were conducted under four pressure levels. The pressure levels applied were 0.1 MPa, 100 MPa, 200 MPa, and 300 MPa. Fracture toughness for each pressure level was determined from the compliance method. The results show that the compressive fracture toughness increases with increasing pressure. Specifically, fracture toughness increases 44% as the pressure increases from 0.1 MPa to 300 MPa.
