A nondestructive ultrasonic technique was applied to evaluate the thermal characteristics and degradation of synthetic polymer resin (plastics) with better cost-effectiveness and functionality than glass and metal. Thermoplastic and transparent acrylic resin (PMMA) specimens were annealed at below the glass transition temperature ($T_g$), and the propagation characteristics (attenuation and velocity) were measured. The attenuation increased and the velocity decreased with thermal degradation. The results showed that the thermal aging of the specimens could be evaluated quantitatively and that the Tg could be evaluated qualitatively.

Thermal degradation of Acrylonitrile butadiene rubber(NBR), which is used for O-ring material as elastomeric sealed diaphragm value in the nuclear power plants, is examined. The thermal degradation is accelerated at 130$^{\circ}C$ by Arrhenius exploit method using the activation energy calculated by thermogravimetric analysis. The weight loss temperature and glass transition temperature are verified for thermally aged NBR. The relationship between dynamic mechanical properties and elongation at break are also investigated. The threshold alue of thermally aged NBR is a ten year in the change of elongation at break.

The temperature distribution in the pellet was obtained from beginning the general heat conduction equation. The thermal conductivity of pellet used the SIMFUEL data that made clear the effect of burnup on the thermal conductivity degradation. Since the pellet rim acts as the thermal barrier to heat flow. the pellet was subdivided into several rings in which the outer ring was adjusted to play almost the same role as the rim. The local burup in each ring except the outer ring was calculated from the power depression factor based on FASER results. whereas the rim burnup at the outer ring was achieved by the pellet averaged burnup based on the empirical relation. The rim changed to the equivalent Xe film so the predicted temperature shooed the thermal jump across the rim. The observed temperature profiles depended on linear heat generation rate. fuel burnup. and power depression factor. The thermal conductivity degradation modelling can be applied to the fuel performance code to high burnup fuel,

To investigate the effect of strains heat effect and thermal energy on the intrinsic degradation of $LaNi_5$, the changes of P-C-Isotherm curves under the condition of mainly applied one of the above factors were investigated. The revesible hydrogen storage capacity decreased by means of the hydrogenation at high temperature without cyclings or pressure induced cyclings with low thermal energy. The degree of degradation was more severe as the heat of hydrogenation reaction increased. Thus the intrinsic degradation of $LaNi_5$ depended upon lattice strain as well as thermal energy.
Most research to date concerning the cryogenic toughness of austenitic stainless steels has concentrated on the base metal and weld metal in weldments. The most severe problem faced on the conventional austenitic stainless steel is the thermal aging degradation such as sensitization and carbide induced embrittlement. In this paper, we investigate the cryogenic toughness degradation which can be occurred for austenitic stainless in welding. The test materials are austenitic stainless JN1, JJ1 and JK2 steels, which are materials recently developed for use in nuclear fusion apparatus at cryogenic temperature. The small punch(SP) test was conducted to detect similar isothermally aging condition with material degradation occurred in service welding. The single-specimen unloading compliance method was used to determine toughness degradation caused by thermal aging for austenitic stainless steels. In addition, we have investigated size effect on fracture toughness by using 20% side-grooved 0.5TCT specimens.

This study is to investigate the effect of a substantial drag reduction caused by the polymer(A611P) when the working fluids flow to the vertical direction in the vertical cylindrical equipment of closed flow system. The drag reduction is associated with the mechanical degrada-tion thermal degradation and heat transfer. By ignore the heat fluxs within the closed system the pressure drop due to the polymer concentration the flow velocity and flow time have been mea-sured. By taking into account the mechanical and thermal degradation in the closed system an experiment has been focused on the determination of the condition which could improve the pump capacity in the heat union electric power plant. Under the condition of non-boiling it has been found out that the change of heat flux has little influence on the drag reduction.

In this study, the capacity and FTIR of polycarbonate film that was degraded for 2, 4, and 8 h in a thermostat at $180^{\circ}C$ was measured. The results of this study are as follows. It was found that the capacity decreased with increasing degradation time and frequency. This findings suggest that the attraction between molecules and amorphous polycarbonate increased because it contains the ketone group (-C=O-) and the chain of dioxides group (-O-R-O-). Measurement by FTIR found that the time of thermal degradation has a smaller impact because the transmutation or variation of the material does not occur. Measurement by SEM magnified 1,000 times found that a longer thermal degradation time results in thermal decomposition of the specimen's particles.

The degradation mechanism and physical properties of an FKM O-ring were observed with thermal aging in this experiment. From X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) analysis, we could observe carbon (285 eV), fluoro (688 eV), and oxygen (531 eV) peaks. Before thermal aging, the concentration of fluoro atoms was 51.23%, which decreased to 8.29% after thermal aging. The concentration of oxygen atoms increased from 3.16% to 20.39%. Under thermal aging, the FKM O-ring exhibited debonding of the fluoro-bond by oxidation. Analysis of the C1s, O1s, and F1s peaks revealed that the degradation reaction usually occurred at the C-F, C-F2, and C-F3 bonds, and generated a carboxyl group (-COOH) by oxidation. Due to the debonding reaction and decreasing mobility, the glass transition temperature of the FKM O-ring increased from $-15.91^{\circ}C$ to $-13.79^{\circ}C$. From the intermittent CSR test, the initial sealing force was 2,149.6 N, which decreased to 1,156.2 N after thermal aging. Thus, under thermal aging, the sealing force decreased to 46.2%, compared with its initial state. This phenomenon was caused by the debonding reaction and decreasing mobility of the FKM O-ring. The S-S curve exhibited a 50% increase in modulus, with break at a low strain and stress state. This was also attributed to the decreasing mobility due to thermal aging degradation.

The degradation mechanisms of thermal barrier coatings (TBCs) were investigated in different thermal fatigue condition in terms of microstructural analyses. The isothermal and cyclic oxidation tests were conducted to atmospheric plasma sprayed-TBCs on NIMONIC 263 substrates. The delamination occurred by the oxide layer formation at the interface, the Ni/Cr-based oxide was formed after Al-based oxide layer grew up to ${\sim}10{\mu}m$ in the isothermal condition. In the cyclic oxidation with dwell time, the failure occurred earlier (500 hr) than in the isothermal oxidation (900 hr) at same temperature. The thickness of Al-based oxide layer of the delaminated specimen in the cyclic condition was ${\sim}4{\mu}m$ and the interfacial cracks were observed. The acoustic emission method revealed that the cracks generated during the cooling step. It was considered that the specimens were prevented from the formation of the Al-based oxide by cooling treatment, and the degradation mode in the cyclic test was dominantly interfacial cracking by the difference of thermal expansion coefficients of the coating layers.

ZnO surge arresters continuously endure the operating voltages during the operation course, and in the mean time, which need to withstand occasionally transient voltages of lightning and switching overvoltages. Under these voltages, the ZnO varistors inside arresters would have aging phenomena, one important result of aging phenomena is the increasing of resistive currents of varistors, which leads to the increasing of power losses of varistors. And the operating voltage is continuously applied on the ZnO varistors, there is a degradation phenomenon existing in ZnO varistors. When the degradation reaches a certain degree, then the arrester must stop operation. The degradation is related to the applied voltage ratio, the applied voltage ratio is high, the degradation is quickly. When the power loss is higher than the thermal dispersion ability of house of arrester, then the arrester will thermally breakdown. In this study the thermal stability characteristics of surge arresters for high power wil be discussed on the view point of watt losses and thermal breakdown.
