  • This paper present an error compensation system and On-Machine Measurement(OMM) system for improving the machining accuracy of ultra-precision lathe. The Fast-Tool-Servo(FTS) driven by a piezoelectric actuator is applied for error compensation system. The controller is implemented on the 32bit DSP for feedback control of piezoelectric actuator. The control system is designed to compensates three kinds of machining errors such as the straightness error of X-axis slide, the thermal growth error of the spindle. and the squareness between spindle and X-axis slide. OMM is preposed to measure the finished profile of workpiece on the machine-tool using capacitive sensor with highly accurate ruby tip probe guided by air bearing. The data acquisition system is linked to the CNC controller to get the position of each axis in real-time. Through the experiments, it is founded that the thermal growth of spindle and tile squareness error between spindle and X-axis slide influenced to machining error more than straightness error of X-axis slide in small travel length. These errors were simulated as a sinusoidal signal which has very low frequency and the FTS could compensate the signal less than 30 m. The implemented OMM system has been tested by measuring flat surface of 50 mm diameter and shows measurement error less than 400 mm

  • Tensile stress loaded on smart composite structures and thermal stress occurred during the during process of the smart composite materials with embedded optical fiber sensors affect directly the mechanical behavior of the embedded optical fiber sensors within the smart composite structures. Stress distribution within the optical fiber sensors varies with respect to the stacking sequence of the composite laminate and the coating conditions of the optical fibers. The cracks occurred within the composite laminate affect not only the fracture of the composite laminate but also the fracture of the optical fiber sensors embedded within the composite laminate. In this study, firstly, stress distribution of the optical fiber sensors embedded within the composite laminate which is subjected to the tensile and thermal stresses was analyzed using Finite Element Method. And, secondly, the effect of the stacking sequence of the composite laminate and the coating conditions of the optical fiber sensors on the stress distribution of the optical fiber sensors was investigated. Finally, the effect of the crack occurred within the smart composite laminate on the fracture behavior of the optical fiber sensors was also observed through the tensile test.

  • The superior properties of ZnO such as high exciton binding energy, high thermal and chemical stability, low growth temperature and possibility of wet etching process in ZnO have great interest for applications ranging from optoelectronics to chemical sensor. Particularly, vertically well-aligned ZnO nanorods on large areas with good optical and structural properties are of special interest for the fabrication of electronic and optical nanodevices. Currently, low-dimensional ZnO is synthesized by metal-organic chemical vapor deposition (MOCVD), molecular beam epitaxy (MBE), thermal evaporation, and sol.gel growth. Recently, our group has been reported about achievement the growth of Ga-doped ZnO nanorods using ZnO seed layer on p-type Si substrate by RF magnetron sputtering system at high rf power and high growth temperature. However, the crystallinity of nanorods deteriorates due to lattice mismatch between nanorods and Si substrate. Also, in the growth of oxide using sputtering, the oxygen flow ratio relative to argon gas flow is an important growth parameter and significantly affects the structural properties. In this study, Phosphorus (P) doped ZnO nanorods were grown on c-sapphire substrates without seed layer by radio frequency magnetron sputtering with various argon/oxygen gas ratios. The layer change films into nanorods with decreasing oxygen partial pressure. The diameter and length of vertically well-aligned on the c-sapphire substrate are in the range of 51-103 nm and about 725 nm, respectively. The photoluminescence spectra of the nanorods are dominated by intense near band-edge emission with weak deep-level emission.

  • Two types of $Ta_2O_{5}$, films, prepared by thermal oxidation and PECVD, on P-type(100) Si wafers were studied to examine the relationship between electrical properties and stresses of the films. For the thermally oxidized films, Ta films were depositied on the Si wafers by dc magnetron sputtering followed by thermal oxidation as functions of oxidation temperature and time. The PECVD films were deposited on the Si wafers as a fuction of RF power density. The relationship between the electrical properties and film stresses were studied. In the case of thermally oxidized $Ta_2O_{5}$ film, the electrical properties and film stress were not found to be dependent on each other, while PECVD $Ta_2O_{5}$ films showed that the electrical properties were depended on the film stress.

  • Single crystalline ${ZnIn_2}{Se_4}$ layers were grown on thoroughly etched semi-insulating GaAs (100) substrate at $400^{\circ}C$ with hot wall epitaxy (HWE) system by evaporating ${ZnIn_2}{Se_4}$ source at $630^{\circ}C$. The crystalline structure of the single crystalline thick films was investigated by the photoluminescence (PL) and Double crystalline X-ray rocking curve (DCRC). The carrier density and mobility of ${ZnIn_2}{Se_4}$ single crystalline thick films measured from Hall effect by van der Pauw method are $9.41{\times}10^{16}cm^{-3}$ and $292cm^2/V{\cdot}s$ at 293 K, respectively. The temperature dependence of the energy band gap of the ${ZnIn_2}{Se_4}$ obtained from the absorption spectra was well described by the Varshni's relation, $E_g(T)$=1.8622 eV-$(5.23{\times}10^{-4}eV/K)T^2$/(T+775.5 K). After the as-grown ${ZnIn_2}{Se_4}$ single crystalline thick films was annealed in Zn-, Se-, and In-atmospheres, the origin of point defects of ${ZnIn_2}{Se_4}$ single crystalline thick films has been investigated by the photoluminescence (PL) at 10 K. The native defects of $V_{Zn}$, $V_{Se}$, $Zn_{int}$, and $Se_{int}$ obtained by PL measurements were classified as a donors or acceptors type. And we concluded that the heat-treatment in the Se-atmosphere converted ${ZnIn_2}{Se_4}$ single crystalline thick films to an optical p-type. Also, we confirmed that In in ${ZnIn_2}{Se_4}$/GaAs did not form the native defects because In in ${ZnIn_2}{Se_4}$ single crystalline thick films existed in the form of stable bonds.

  • In this paper, we fabricated the micro hotplate which consisted of a thin film heater(Pt/Cr bilayers) sandwiched with the thermal oxide and E-beam evaporated oxide. And we studied the electrical and the structural properties of Pt/Cr bilayers due to annealing temperature. When we compared the temperature measured from type k thermocouples with the temperature acquired from I.R. thermo-vision system according to the variations of emissivity, the emissivity of I-beam evaporated oxide was 0.5. The sheet resistance of Pt/Cr bilayers didn't depend on the Cr layer thickness, and it was considered as the existence of CrO between the Pt and the Cr layer. When the annealing temperature was increased from $500^{\circ}C$ to $700^{\circ}C$, the out-diffusions of Cr were increased(which was confirmed by AES depth profile) and the grain size of Pt(220) phase was enlarged also(analyzed by XRD and SEM photographs). From the results of XRD analysis and AES depth profile, the Pt/Cr bilayers annealed at $500^{\circ}C$ were more stable than any other cases in structural properties.

  • The heat generated by electrical components during train operation was estimated by measuring the wall temperature in a locomotive, as well as the temperature and speed of the air entering from the outside and then returning to the outside. The temperatures of the electrical components and wall surface in a high-speed train were measured using an infrared camera. The heat generated by the electrical components was exhausted to the outside through a duct installed on the ceiling of the high-speed train. Thus, the temperature and speed of this exhaust air were measured, as well as those of the air entering the locomotive from the outside. The temperatures at the surfaces of the electrical components and walls in the locomotive were also measured using an attachment-type temperature sensor. In addition, the measurement results were applied to analyze how the heat characteristics of the electrical components were affected by the train operation.

  • The cost of deploying Geological and Environmental information gathering systems, especially when such systems obtain remote sensing and photographic data through the use of commercial satellites and aircraft. Besides the high cost equipment required, adverse weather conditions can further restrict a researcher's ability to collect data anywhere and anytime. To mitigate this problem, we have developed a compact, multi-spectral automatic Aerial photographic system. This system's Multi-spectral camera is capable of the visible (RGB) and infrared (NIR) bands (3032*2008 pixel). It consists of a thermal infrared camera and automatic balance control, and can be managed by a palm-top computer. Other features includes a camera gimbal system, GPS receiver, weather sensor among others. We have evaluated the efficiency of this system in several field tests at the following locations: Kyongsang-bukdo beach, Nakdong river (at each site of mulkeum-namji and koryung-gumi), and Kyungahn River. Its tested ability in aerial photography, weather data, as well as GPS data acquisition demonstrates its flexibility as a tool for environmental data monitoring.

  • In this paper, a fire prevention system based on a broadband powerline communication (PLC) system is implemented and a demonstration experiment is carried out to prevent from or promptly dealing with possible fires within the nacelle of a wind turbine generator system (WTGS). For this purpose, an inductive coupler having satisfactory attenuation characteristic in the frequency region for high-speed PLC is also manufactured. It is confirmed that the implemented system can monitor the environmental change inside the nacelle in real time by transmitting various information obtained by the sensors such as temperature, flame, and smoke sensor installed in the nacelle and thermal image recorded by a thermal camera to the ground control center through the PLC system. Therefore, it is, considered that the implemented system will significantly improve the reliability of the fire monitoring and prevention system of the WTGS in conjunction with the existing safety system.
