  • Electron beam physical vapor deposition (EB-PVD) process has currently been applied to thermal barrier coatings (TBCs) for aircraft engines. Due to unique columnar structure, EB-PVD TBCs have advantages in resistances to thermal shock and thermal cycle for their applications, compared to films prepared by plasma spray By the EB-PVD equipment, we successfully obtained yttria-stabilized zirconia (YSZ) layer which has columnar and feather like structure including a large amount of nano size pores and gaps. The EB-PVD technique has been developed for coating functional perovskite type oxides such as (La, Sr)MnO3. Electrode properties have been improved by interface and structural control.

  • The most controversial topics in plasma sprayed ceramic coating system are recently mechanical properties such as bond strength, cohesive strength, toughness and so on. Determination of bond strength of coatings is one of the most important problems. In the industry, the bond strength of coating system has been estimated by Pull-off test(ASTM standard C633-79). But, without a fixed jig and specimen, it is impossible to obtain the bond strength. Therefore, it is necessary to study the critical fracture load on interface of the coating by indentation test. Because the critical fracture load plays an important role in evaluating the bond strength for plasma sprayed ceramic coating system. So, we have estimated critical fracture load in plasma sprayed ceramic coating system, and it was shown that inverse relationship between the cross-section hardness of coating and the critical fracture load(Pc). In case of the high load(1kgf, 2kgf) in $Al_{2}O_{3}+13%TiO_{2}$, it was found that the critical point(Pco), which the coating was broken on.

  • In this study, the degree of particle melting in $Y_2O_3$ plasma spraying and its effects on coating characteristics have been investigated in terms of microstructural features, microhardness and scratch resistance. Plasma sprayed $Y_2O_3$ coatings were formed using two different powder feeding systems: a system in which the powder is fed inside the plasma gun and a system in which the powder is fed externally. The internal powder spraying method generated a well-defined lamellae structure that was characterized by a thin porous layer at the splat boundary and microcracks within individual splats. Such micro-defects were generated by the large thermal contraction of splats from fully-molten droplets. The external powder spraying method formed a relatively dense coating with a particulate deposition mode, and the deposition of a higher fraction of partially-melted droplets led to a much reduced number of inter-splat pores and intra-splat microcracks. The microhardness and scratch resistance of the $Y_2O_3$ coatings were improved by external powder spraying; this result was mainly attributed to the reduced number of micro-defects.

  • The advantage of plasma-sprayed coating is their good resistance against thermal shock due to the porous state of the coated layer with a consequently low Youngs modulus. However, the existence of many pores with a bimodal distribution and a laminar structure in the coating reduces coating strength and oxidation protection of the base metals. In order to counteract these problems, there have been many efforts to obtain dense coatings by spraying under low pressure or vacuum and by controlling particle size and morphology of the spraying materials. The aim of the present study is to survey the effects of the HIP treatment between 1100 and 130$0^{\circ}C$ on plasma-sprayed oxide coating of A1$_2$O$_3$, A1$_2$O$_3$-SiO$_2$on the metal substrate (type C18N10T stainless steel). These effects were characterized by phase identification, Vickers hardness measurement, and tensile test before and after HIPing. These results show that high-pressure treatment has an advantage for improving adhesive strength and Vickers hardness of plasma-sprayed coatings.

  • Increasing demands in productivity are propelling the development of new manufacturing methods like hard machining, high speed cutting (HSC) or machining of difficult to machine materials. In these processes the toois are subjected to very severe mechanical, tribological and thermal loads. They fail prematurely by abrasion, cratering, edge breakage and cold welding. The performance of such tools will be enhanced by better and more wear resistant coatings. The development of these new coatings shows a clear trend towards complex multi-component and multi-layer configurations. TiAIN multilayer coating belongs to these coatings for the new cutting tool generation. This paper tries to explain the benefits of the new coatings. TiAIN multilayer coating offers the following advantages: reduction of manufacturing costs. boost productivity, and lower coolant procurement, conditioning and disposal costs.

  • In this paper we observe the protective coatings carbon for steel, aluminium and titanium alloys were obtained by plasma electrolytic oxidation (PEO) under unipolar and bipolar conditions. The anticorrosion properties and the thermal stability of the surface layers were studied by electrochemical impedance spectroscopy and potentiodynamic polarization. It was found that the application of the bipolar PEO mode enables one to synthesize the surface layers that possess enhanced anticorrosion and mechanical properties. results of research of antiscale PEO - coatings for marine power equipment are presented. The combined method of prevention of corrosion and scale formation was tested at the industrial plants of Russian Shipyard "Zvezda".

  • Impedance spectroscopy is a non-destructive evaluation (NDE) method first proposed and developed for evaluating TGO layers with compressive stress inside thermally degraded plasma-sprayed thermal barrier coatings (PS TBCs). A bode plot (phase angle (h) vs. frequency (f)) was used to investigate the TGO layer on electrical responses. In our experimental study, the phase angle of Bode plots is sensitive for detecting TGO layers while applying compressive stress on thermal barrier coatings. It is difficult to detect TGO layers in samples isothermally aged for 100 hrs and 200 hrs without compressive stress, and substantial change of phase was observed these samples with compressive stress. Also, the frequency shift of the phase angle and change of the phase angle are observed in samples isothermally aged for more than 400 hrs.

  • Thermal barrier coatings(TBCs) are being applied in many industrial fields such as thermal power generation, aviation and seasonal fields. $ZrO_2-Y_2O_3$(8%) thermal spray coating powders are commercially used as thermal-barrier coating materials to protect against oxidation and corrosion of heat-resistant alloys at elevated temperatures. Currently, $ZrO_2-Y_2O_3$(8%) thermal-spray powder is made using the industrial co-precipitation process, which is very complex and requires a lot of time. In this study, orthorhombic $ZrO_2$ and $Y_2O_3$ powders were fabricated by mechanical mixing, which is more economical than the co-precipitation process. A tetragonal, yttria-stabilized zirconia(YSZ) coating-layer was produced by plasma spraying, using orthorhombic $ZrO_2-Y_2O_3$(8%) powder. Our experimental results indicate that $ZrO_2-Y_2O_3$(8%) mixed powder can be used economically in industry because it is no longer necessary to make this powder by liquid and gas-phase methods.

  • Plasma coatings have been conducted to improve the mechanical properties of thermal resistance, wear resistance, corrosion resistance and thermal shock with respect to Great-Bar which is used as a carrier device for ironstone sintering under $700^{\circ}C$. The surface coatings on the upper side of the Great-Bar exposed on extreme environments of high temperature, severe wear, corrosion and thermal shock extended the life time due to the barrier coating layer. $Al_2O_3$, $Cr_2O_3$, WC coatings were applied to Great-Bar and their mechanical and chemical properties are analyzed by several experimental tests such as thermal resistance, wear resistance, corrosion resistance and thermal shock resistance. It shows excellent advantages with respect to wear, thermal shock and corrosion.
