Development of mechanistic cladding rupture model for severe accident analysis and application in PHEBUS FPT3 experiment

  • Cladding ballooning and rupture are the important phenomena at the early stage of a severe accident. Most severe accident analysis codes determine the cladding rupture based on simple parameter models. In this paper, a FRTMB module was developed using the thermal-mechanical model to analyze the fuel mechanical behavior. The purpose is to judge the cladding rupture with the severe accident analysis code. The FRTMB module was integrated into the self-developed severe accident analysis code ISAA to simulate the PHEBUS FPT3 experiment. The predicted rupture time and temperature of the cladding were basically consistent with the measured values, which verified the correctness and effectiveness of the FRTMB module. The results showed that the rising of gas pressure in the fuel rod and high temperature led to cladding ballooning. Consequently, the cladding hoop strain exceeded the strain limit, and the cladding burst. The developed FRTMB module can be applied not only to rod-type fuel, but also to plate-type fuel and other types of reactor fuel rods. Moreover, the FRTMB module can improve the channel blockage model of ISAA code and make contributions to analyzing the effect of clad ballooning on transient and subsequent parts of core degradation.

Study on the effect of flow blockage due to rod deformation in QUENCH experiment

  • During a loss-of-coolant accident (LOCA) in the pressurized water reactor (PWR), there is a possibility that high temperature and internal pressure of the fuel rods lead to ballooning of the cladding, which causes a partial blockage of flow area in a subchannel. Such flow blockage would influence the core coolant flow, thus affecting the core heat transfer during a reflooding phase and subsequent severe accident. However, most of the system analysis codes simulate the accident process based on the assumed channel blockage ratio, resulting in the fact that the simulation results are not consistent with the actual situation. This paper integrates the developed core Fuel Rod Thermal-Mechanical Behavior analysis (FRTMB) module into the self-developed severe accident analysis code ISAA. At the same time, the existing flow blockage model is improved to make it possible to simulate the change of flow distribution due to fuel rod deformation. Finally, the ISAA-FRTMB is used to simulate the QUENCH-LOCA-0 experiment to verify the correctness and effectiveness of the improved flow blockage model, and then the effect of clad ballooning on core heat transfer and subsequent parts of core degradation is analyzed.

  • This study discusses a hypothetical method for tracking the propagation damage of Carbon Reinforced Fiber Plastic (CRFP) components underneath vibration fatigue. The High Cycle Fatigue (HCF) behavior of composite materials was generally not as severe as this of admixture alloys. Each fissure initiation in metal alloys may quickly lead to the opposite. The HCF behavior of composite materials is usually an extended state of continuous degradation between resin and fibers. The increase is that any layer-to-layer contact conditions during delamination opening will cause a dynamic complex response, which may be non-linear and dependent on temperature. Usually resulted from major deformations, it could be properly surveyed by a non-contact investigation system. Here, this article discusses the scanning laser application of that vibrometer to track the propagation damage of CRFP components underneath fatigue vibration loading. Thus, the study purpose is to demonstrate that the investigation method can implement systematically a series of hypothetical means and dynamic characteristics. The application of the relaxation method based on numerical simulation in the Artificial Intelligence (AI) Evolved Bat (EB) strategy to reduce the dynamic response is proved by numerical simulation. Thermal imaging cameras are also measurement parts of the chain and provide information in qualitative about the temperature location of the evolution and hot spots of damage.

Enhancing fire resistance of steel bridges through composite action

  • Bridge fire hazard has become a growing concern over the last decade due to the rapid increase of ground transportation of hazardous materials and resulting fire incidents. The lack of fire safety provisions in steel bridges can be a significant issue owing steel thermal properties that lead to fast degradation of steel properties at elevated temperatures. Alternatively, the development of composite action between steel girders and concrete decks can increase the fire resistance of steel bridges and meet fire safety requirements in some applications. This paper reviews the fire problem in steel bridges and the fire behavior of composite steel-concrete bridge girders. A numerical model is developed to trace the fire response of a typical bridge girder and is validated using measurements from fire tests. The selected bridge girder is composed by a hot rolled steel section strengthened with bearing stiffeners at midspan and supports. A concrete slab sitting on the top of the girder is connected to the slab through shear studs to provide full composite action. The validated numerical model was used to investigate the fire resistance of real scale bridge girders and the effect of the composite action under different scenarios (standard and hydrocarbon fires). Results showed that composite action can significantly increase the fire resistance of steel bridge girders. Besides, fire severity played an important role in the fire behavior of composite girders and both factors should be taken into consideration in the design of steel bridges for fire safety.

Characterization of Poly(methyl methacrylate)-tin (IV) Chloride Blend by TG-DTG-DTA, IR and Pyrolysis-GC-MS Techniques

  • Thermal behavior of poly (methyl methacrylate) was analyzed in the presence of tin (IV) chloride. Five different proportions - polymer to additive - were selected for casting films from common solvent. TG, DTG and DTA were employed to monitor thermal degradation of the systems. IR and py-GC-MS helped identify the decomposition products. The blends start degrading at a temperature lower than that of the neat polymer and higher than that of the pure additive. Complex formation between tin of additive and carbonyl oxygen (pendent groups of MMA units) was noticed in the films soon after the mixing of the components in the blends. The samples were also heated at three different temperatures to determine the composition of residues left after the expulsion of volatiles. The polymer, blends and additive exhibited a one step, two-step and three-step degradation, respectively. $T_0$ is highest for the polymer, lowest for the additive and is either $60^{\circ}C$ or $70^{\circ}C$ for the blends. The amount of residue increases down the series [moving from blend-1 (minimum additive concentration) to blend-5 (maximum additive concentration)]. For blend-1, it is 7% of the original mass whereas it is 16% for blend-5. $T_{max}$ also goes up as the concentration of additive in the blends is elevated. The complexation appears to be the cause of observed stabilization. Some new products of degradation were noted apart from those reported earlier. These included methanol, isobutyric acid, acid chloride, etc. Molecular-level mixing of the constituents and "positioning effect" of the additive may have brought about the formation of new compounds. Routes are proposed for the appearance of these substances. Horizontal burning tests were also conducted on polymer and blends and the results are discussed. Activation energies and reaction orders were calculated. Activation energy is highest for the polymer, i.e., 138.9 Kcal/mol while the range for blends is from 51 to 39 Kcal/mol. Stability zones are highlighted for the blends. The interaction between the blended parts seems to be chemical in nature.

  • A thermal aging is observed in a primary reactor cooling system(RCS) made of a casting stainless steel when the RCS is exposed for long period at the reactor operating temperature, 290~3300C An investigation of effects of thermal aging on a low cycle fatigue characteristics included a stress variations caused by a reactor operation and trip, is required. The purpose of the present investigation is to find an effect of a thermal aging of the CF8M on a low cycle fatigue life. The specimen of CF8M are prepared by an artificially accelerated aging technique holding 300 and 1800hr at 4300C respectively. The low cycle fatigue tests for the virgin and two aged specimens are performed at the room temperature for various strain amplitudes($\varepsilon$ta), 0.3, 0.5, 0.8, 1.0, 1.2 and 1.5% strain. Through the experiment, it is found that the fatigue life is rapidly reduced with an creasing of the aging time. The experimental fatigue life estimation formulas between the virgin and two aged specimen are obtained and are proposed to a analysis purpose.

  • 강섬유보강 적층복합구조물에서 온도의 변화는 구조물의 응답에 중요한 영향을 미칠수 있다. 온도의 급작스런 변화는 재료의 강도와 성질을 현저히 저하시켜 구조물의 대변형, 좌굴, 고응력상태를 유발하는 중요한 인자가 된다. 본 연구에서는 등분포로 재하된 온도하중에 의한 적층복합판의 온도좌굴에 관한 해석을 수행하였다. 전단변형의 효과를 정확히 고려하기위해 5개의 변수로 구성된 고차전단변형이론을 적용하였다. 적층판의 배열각도, 적층판의 수, 폭-두께비의 변화, 형상비의 변화에 따른 임계좌굴온도를 구하여 1차전단변형이론에 의한 결과와 고전적이론에 의한 결과와 비교분석하였다.

유연 기판 소재로 응용을 위한 폴리(에틸렌/프로필렌 나프탈레이트)의 치수안정성 연구 (Dimensional Stability of Poly(ethylene/propylene naphthalate) as a Flexible Substrate Application)

  • 폴리(에틸렌 나프탈레이트) 공중합체를 합성하기 위하여 에틸렌글리콜과 함께 1,3-프로판디올을 혼합사용하여 폴리(에틸렌/프로필렌 나프탈레이트)를 합성하고 이를 유연 기판 소재로 적용하기 위한 물성을 살펴보았다. NMR 실험 결과, 에틸렌과 프로필렌 segment가 함께 공존하는 폴리(에틸렌/프로필렌 나프탈레이트)가 합성되었음을 확인하였다. 에틸렌과 함께 프로필렌 segment가 존재하는 경우 합성된 폴리에스터의 결정화가 일어나지 않으며 유리전이온도와 열분해온도는 감소함을 알 수 있다. 합성된 폴리(에틸/프로필렌 나프탈레이트)의 주사슬에 에틸렌 보다 상대적으로 긴 프로필렌이 공존함에 따라 주사슬 배향이 어려워 열팽창계수가 감소함에 따라 합성 시 1,3-프로판디올 첨가에 따른 다소간의 내열온도 감소에도 저수축 유연기판 소재로 적용 가능함을 알 수 있었다.

분광광도법 및 전기분석법을 이용한 절연유의 경년열화 진단에 관한 연구 (A Study on the Aging Diagnosis of Transformer oil by Spectrometric and Electroanalytical Methods)

  • 본 연구에서는 주상변압기용 절연유를 대상으로 가속 열화 실험을 수행하면서 절연유의 전기적 특성값인 유전정접과 절연유내의 금속의 양과 절연지의 분해로 생성되는 푸루푸랄양을 조사 연구하였다. 유전정접은 절연유에 변압기 구성재료가 모두 포함된 경우에 많은 영향을 받는 것으로 나타났다. 절연유의 산화에 촉매 작용을 하는 금속의 양을 측정한 결과, 구리의 양은 열화 시간이 지남에 따라서 증가하는 것을 볼 수 있었다. 유전정접과 구리측정값을 비교하여 볼 때 구리측정값이 0.2[ppm] 이상 되면 요주의 범위에 속하는 것으로 볼 수 있다. 푸루푸랄의 양을 측정한 결과 열화시간이 지남에 따라서 푸루푸랄의 양이 증가하는 경향을 보여주었다. 본 연구 결과로 볼 때 주상변압기 예방진단기초자료로 충분히 활용할 수 있었다.

  • 자동차용 냉각기 고무호스는 열과 기계적 하중을 받으면서 국부적으로 형성된 전기적 영향으로 인해 노화와 고장이 발생한다. 본 연구에서는 개선된 시험방법을 이용하여 고무호스의 파괴거동을 재현하였다. 냉각기 고무호스 재료인 카본블랙이 함유된 EPDM 고무를 사용하여 인장응력과 전기화학적 복합 스트레스를 가하여 노화거동을 분석하였다. 노화 시간에 따른 전류 및 저항의 변화거동을 관찰하였으며 인장 변형 스트레스와 전압 및 노화온도 조건에 따른 노화거동을 분석하였다. 고무 시험편을 수직면으로 정밀하게 절단하여 시험편 표면 및 내부의 변화거동을 분석하여 전기화학적 노화거동과 고장메커니즘을 규명하였다.
