Most of irradiated graphite that should be disposed comes from moderators and reflectors of nuclear power plants. The quantity of irradiated graphite could be higher in the future if high-temperature reactors (HTRs) will be deployed. In this case noteworthy quantities of fuel pebbles containing semi-graphitic carbonaceous material should be added to the already existing 250,000 tons of irradiated graphite. Industry graphite is largely used in industrial applications for its high thermal and electrical conductivity and thermal and chemical resistance, making it a valuable material. Irradiated graphite constitutes a waste management challenge owing to the presence of long-lived radionuclides, such as 14C and 36Cl. In the ENEA Nuclear Material Characterization Laboratory it has been successfully designed a procedure based on the exfoliation process organic solvent assisted, with the purpose of investigate the possibility of achieving graphite significantly less toxic that could be recycled for other purpose [1]. The objective of this paper is to evaluate the possibility of the scalability from laboratory to industrial dimensions of the exfoliation process and provide the prototype of a chemical plant for the treatment of irradiated graphite.
Alpha-tocopherol was thermally oxidized and degraded at high temperatures and the resulting products were chromatographically separated and identified by LC-MS. Alpha-tocopherol dissolved in glycerol was heated at 200^{\circ}C for 30 min. The thermal products were separated by hexane extraction and analyzed by HPLC using a reversed phase $\mu$-Bondapak $C_{18}-column$ with two kinds of elution solvents: a mixture of acetonitrile and methanol (3:2), and of acetonitrile, methanol, 2-propanol, chloroform and methylene chloride (3:2:5:0.5:0.5) in a gradient mode. The isolated thermal. products of alpha-tocopherol were more viscous than alpha-tocopherol, and dark brown in color. Major thermal degradation products of alpha-tocopherol were identified by LC-MS, and the structures of thermal products were proposed. Alpha-tocopherol and its thermal degradation products were degraded into fragments, mainly at the non-aromatic parts. The degradation products of alpha-tocopherol. were combined with oxidized product (tocopherylquinone) to make thermal. products through dimerization.
Novel characterization of thermal properties of a battery has been introduced by defining its frequency-dependent thermal impedance function. Thermal impedance function can be approximated as a thermal impedance spectrum by analyzing experimental temperature transient which is related to the thermal impedance function through Laplace transformation. In order to obtain temperature transient, a process has been devised to generate external heat pulse with heating wire and to measure the response of battery. This process is used to study several commercial Li-ion batteries of cylindrical type. The thermal impedance measurements have been performed using potentionstat/galvanostate controlled digital signal processor, which is more commonly available than flow-meter usually applied for thermal property measurements. Thermal impedance spectra obtained for batteries produced by different manufactures are found to differ considerably. Comparison of spectra at different states of charge indicates independence of thermal impedance on charging state of battery. It is shown that thermal impedance spectrum can be used to obtain simultaneously thermal capacity and thermal conductivity of battery by non-linear complex least-square fit of the spectrum to thermal impedance model. Obtained data is used to simulate a response of the battery to internal heating during discharge. It is found that temperature inside the battery is by one-third larger that on its surface. This observation has to be considered to prevent damage by overheating.

This paper describes the thermal contact resistance and its effect on the performance of thermal interface material. An ASTM D 5470 based apparatus is used to measure the thermal interface resistance. Bulk thermal conductivity of different interface material is measured and compared with manufacturers' data. Also, the effect of grease void in the contact surface is investigated using the same apparatus. The flat type thermal interface tester is proposed and compared with conventional one to consider the effect of lateral heat flow. The results show that bulk thermal conductivity alone is not the basis to select the interface material because high bulk thermal conductivity interface material can have high thermal contact resistance, and that the center voiding affects the thermal interface resistance seriously. On the aspect of heat flow direction, thermal impedance of the lateral heat flow shows higher than that of the longitudinal heat flow by sixteen percent.

Thermal generation by power dissipation of the highly integrated System on Chip (SoC) device is irregularly distributed on the intra chip. It leads to thermal increment of the each thermally different region and effects on the propagation timing; consequently, the timing violation occurs due to the misestimated number of buffers. In this paper, the timing budgeting methodology considering thermal variation which contains buffer insertion with wire segmentation is proposed. Thermal aware LUT modeling for cell intrinsic delay is also proposed. Simulation results show the reduction of the worst delay after implementing thermal aware buffer insertion using by proposed wire segmentation up to 33% in contrast to the original buffer insertion. The error rates are measured by SPICE simulation results.

The fabrication process and thermal properties of 50∼76vo1% SiCp/Al metal matrix composites (MMCs) were investigated. The 50∼76vo1% SiCp/Al MMCs fabricated by pressure infiltration casting process showed that thermal conductivities were 85∼170W/mK and coefficient of thermal expansion (CTE) were ranged 10∼6ppm/K. Specially, the thermal conductivity and CTE of 71vo1%SiCp/Al MMCs were ranged l15∼156W/mK and 6∼7ppm/K, respectively, which showed a improved thermal properties than the conventional electronic packaging materials such as ceramics and metals.

In general, laminate effective orthotropic thermal conductivities are dependent on fiber and matrix material properties, fiber volume fraction and fabric geometric parameters. This paper deals with the predicting method of the transverse and the in-plane thermal conductivities of plain weave fabric composites based on the three dimensional series-parallel thermal resistance network. Thermal resistance network was applied to unit cell model that characterizes the periodically repeated pattern of plain weave. Also, an experiment apparatus is setup to measure the thermal conductivities of composite material. The numerical and experimental results of carbon/epoxy plain weave are compared.

Using materials with high thermal conductivity is a matter of great concern in the field of thermal management. In this study, we present our experimental results on an important physical property of carbon nanotube (CNT) films, two-dimensional thermal conductivity obtained by using an optical method based on Raman spectroscopy. We prepared four kinds of CNT films to investigate the effect of CNT type on heat spreading performance of films. This first comparative study using the optical method shows that the arc-discharge single-walled carbon nanotubes yield the best heat spreading film. And we observed thermal conductivity values of CNT films with various transmittances and found that the Raman method works as long as the sample is a transparent film. This study provides useful information on characterization of thermal conduction in transparent CNT films and could be an important step toward high-performance carbon-based heat spreading films.

In the last decade it has been witnessed significant developments in the area of nano particles and nano scale fillers on electrical, thermal, and mechanical properties of polymeric materials such as resins, varnishes, enamel and bakelites. The electric and thermal properties were more important in the electrical equipments for both steady state and transient state conditions. This paper deals with the characterization of the electric and thermal properties of the pure varnish and zirconia (ZrO2) filler mixed varnish. The electric properties such as dielectric loss (tan δ), dielectric constant (ε), dielectric strength and partial discharge voltage were analyzed and detailed for different samples. It was observed that zirconia nano filler mixed varnish has the superior dielectric and thermal properties when compared to those of standard varnish. It has shown that at power frequency the 1wt% nano composite sample has the higher permittivity value when compared to other samples. It has been examined that the 1wt% sample was having higher inception and extinction voltages when compared to other samples. It has been observed that 1wt% sample has higher dielectric strength when compared with other samples. There has been an improvement of thermal property by adding few weight percent of zirconia nano fillers. There was not much variation in glass transition among the nano mixed composites. The weight loss was improved at 1wt% of the zirconia nano fillers.
