Post-stroke oculomotor nerve palsy occurs more frequently than previously reported, but only a few studies of traditional Korean medicine treatments have been reported. The symptoms are severe and difficult to treat, and current treatments are high-cost, short-lasting, insufficient for shortening the therapeutic period and promoting better recovery, or involve the risk of post-operative over-correction or under-correction. Traditional Korean medicine treatments may be comparatively effective at lower cost and less harmful. Thus, we report three cases of post-stroke oculomotor nerve palsy treated with traditional Korean medicine.
A 1-year-old castrated mixed-breed dog presented with diffuse, purple lesions arranged in an irregular patchy pattern, with a slight elevation on the right hindlimb extending from the tarsus joint to the upper region of the thigh. Dermatological examinations and fungal and bacterial cultures revealed no infectious agents. The therapeutic response to antibiotics and antifungal agents was negative. A histopathology examination of the lesion revealed vascular proliferation with vasodilation and numerous varying-sized vessels. Mast-cell-dominated perivascular cuffing was also noted. The dog was diagnosed with cutaneous angiomatosis due to diffuse lesions and the histopathology findings of hemangioma.
Calcifying aponeurotic fibroma (CAF) is an uncommon benign soft-tissue fibroblastic tumor with characteristic histological features. It mainly occurs in the distal part of the extremities, such as the hands and feet, in children and adolescents. Males are twice as commonly affected as females. CAF exhibits local invasiveness, and hence, its recurrence rate is also high. Therefore, complete surgical excision is both diagnostic and therapeutic. The occurrence of CAF in the maxillofacial region, especially the temporomandibular joint (TMJ), is very rare, and this necessitates its differentiation from other TMJ neoplasms. The differential diagnosis of CAF requires microscopic examination. Herein, we report a rare case of CAF located at the left mandibular condyle, which was confirmed by histopathological analysis.
The growing use of laparoscopy in elective surgery has led to its increase utilization in emergency surgery. However, the employment of laparoscopy in abdominal trauma is still unusual. Here in we report a case of a patient with blunt abdominal trauma that resulted in a combination of exceptional traumatic lesions, diaphragmatic and bladder lacerations. Both injuries were diagnosed and successfully resolved by laparoscopy. The report of this type of lesions and resolution is extremely rare, being this the second case described in the international literature. This article intends to show that laparoscopy may not only be used as a diagnostic tool, but also as a therapeutic instrument in selected cases of blunt abdominal trauma.
Objectve: To inform a clinical usefulness of Nangan-geon (暖肝煎) decoction to treat a refractory abdominal pain especially in eldery. Methods: This case report presents an 85-year old male patient who had been suffered with a refractory abdominal pain without any abnormality in laboratory test and radiological examination for 5-years. The clinical outcome was observed by numerical rating scale (NRS) of self-reporting method. Results: Based on his previous multiple normal examination results from Western hospitals and clinical features including thin body (19.6 BMI), nocturnal pain around lower abdomen and cold-sensitivity, author diagnosed him as "deficiency and cold of liver-Qi (肝氣虛寒)" similar to intestinal spasm. After prescription with Nangan-geon (暖肝煎) for one month, all symptoms became improved notably (NRS 5), and almost completely recovered as a level of normal condition in 3 months (NRS 1). Conclusion: This study would show the potential of traditional Korean medicine (TKM) therapies for a refractory functional abdominal pain, and especially efficacy of Nangan-geon against cold-pattern of nonspecific abdominal pain in elderly patients.
A 15-year-old spayed female Yorkshire Terrier was presented to our hospital with a history of anorexia, depression and abdominal pain. Diagnostic procedures including blood test, radiography and ultrasonography were performed. Abdominal ultrasonography revealed multiple hypoechoic cysts in the left lobe of the liver. Over time, the cysts increased in size and became more echogenic. Four days later, the rupture of the largest cyst was suspected, and hepatic abscesses with bacteria were confirmed by aspiration of the cyst. Despite surgical resection of the abscessed liver lobe, antibiotic administration, and supportive therapy, the dog died 9 days after presentation to the hospital and 4 days after the surgical procedure. The present case report described the overall diagnostic and therapeutic approaches for liver abscesses in a dog.
Gastrectomy is the most effective method of treating gastric cancer, but it is commonly associated with weight loss, nutritional deficiencies, and the increased risk of malnutrition due to post-surgery complications, including gastric stasis, dumping syndrome, malabsorption, and maldigestion. Malnutrition is a risk factor for postoperative complications and poor prognosis. To prevent it and guarantee a quick recovery after surgery, continuous and individualized nutrition intervention should be performed both before surgery and postoperatively. The Department of Dietetics at Samsung Medical Center (SMC) performed nutritional status assessment before gastrectomy, initial nutritional assessment within 24 hours of admission, description of therapeutic diet after surgery, nutrition counselling before discharge, and nutritional status assessment and individual nutrition counselling after 1, 3, 6, and 12 months from surgery. This is a case report of a patient who underwent gastrectomy as well as intensive nutrition intervention in SMC.
Purpose: This paper is aim to report that menopausal disorder can be effectively diagnosed and treated by referring to the life event stress of patient. Methods: Researchers got a grip on the life event stress of patient by using medical examinations by interview and compared the conditions of patient before and after treatment by using Kupperman's Index. The prescription of the Gamidangguisu-san hap samhap-tang( Jiaweidangguixu-san he sanhetang) and the Gamisoyo-san (Jiaweixiaoyao-san) and the acupuncture therapy and the moxibustion therapy were used for the treatment. Results: The serious musculoskeletal systemic pains, which includes back pain, lumbago, and myalgia, and other menopausal troubles were improved remarkably. Conclusion: The menopausal disorder could be caused by not only the change of hormone but also complex factors of environmental matters which includes social cultural surroundings, mentality etc. Therefore the life event stress could be one of critical factors of menopausal disorder. The diagnosis and treatment considering the life event stress could be effective method to relieve patient's menopausal disorder.

Chronic maxillary atelectasis (CMA) is a progressive alteration in the volume of the maxillary sinuses that may result in facial asymmetry. CMA in asymptomatic patients is known as silent sinus syndrome (SSS) and is a rare entity, especially in pediatric patients. This study reports a case of SSS in a pediatric patient who received an early diagnosis through cone-beam computed tomography (CBCT). An asymptomatic 12-year-old female patient in orthodontic treatment presented with opacification of the left maxillary sinus on a panoramic radiograph. Clinically, the patient had discrete hypoglobus and enophthalmos. CBCT and nasal video-endoscopy revealed ostiomeatal obstruction with bone deformity, leading to diagnosis of SSS. Endonasal endoscopic maxillary sinusotomy was performed. Two years later, the patient remained asymptomatic, and a second CBCT exam confirmed a stable condition. This case highlights the role of optimal radiographic interpretation for early diagnosis of maxillofacial alterations in pediatric patients.

This study aims to report a case of rectosigmoid neuroendocrine tumor patient with liver metastasis whose outstanding carcinoid symptom was mucosal diarrhea for more than 10 times a day. Three different herbal decoctions were administered orally for the treatment of diarrhea which was among carcinoid symptoms from diffuse metastatic liver lesion. The herbal decoctions given were modified Lijung-tang, modified Sambaek-tang and modified Jeokseokjiuyeoryang-tang. The administration period was 5, 14 and 9 days respectively. Frequency of patient's mucosal diarrhea had increased consistently during hospitalization. It had almost doubled compared to pre-hospitalization up to 27 times/24 hrs. But during the period of modified Sambaek-tang administration, frequency of diarrhea was maintained between 9 to 15 times/24hrs. There was no difference of liver tumors between Nov 16th 2013 and Dec 9th 2013 in computed tomography images. Three conventional established herbal prescriptions administered in this case didn't show any favorable effect on improving mucosal diarrhea induced by carcinoid symptoms of a rectosigmoid neuroendocrine tumor with liver metastasis. Even if modified Sambaek-tang showed partial effect on frequency of diarrhea, we concluded that it was not sufficient to be a therapeutic method of the diarrhea as carcinoid symptom. Furthermore, it is necessary to conduct additional studies about the diarrhea of neuroendocrine tumor with liver metastasis.
