An optical temperature sensor based on the etched planar waveguide Bragg grating is developed and its performance is explored using theoretical and experimental methods. The planar waveguide is designed and fabricated using optical lithography and wet chemical etching. An efficient butt coupled optical fiber is used to examine the spectral characteristics of the grating sensor, and to investigate the grating parameters. The typical bandwidth and reflectivity of the surface etched grating has been ~0.2 nm and ~7%, respectively, at a wavelength of ~1,552 nm. The temperature-induced wavelength change of the optical sensor is found to be slightly non-linear over ${\sim}200^{\circ}C$ temperature range. Theoretical models for the grating response of the sensor based on waveguide and classical laminated plate deformation theories agree with experiments to within acceptable tolerance.
The relatively rapid rising trends of crime rates in marine situations leads to social concerns in Korea. This study reviews some theoretical backgrounds of the economics of crime and apply econometric models to Korean marine crimes. We find that there is a negative relationship between marine crime rates and unemployment rates and positive relationship between price level and marine crime in Korea. And also we find that unemployment elasticities are higher in the 1980s' and price elasticities are higher in th 90's in comparison with the results of the other periods. This findings are incompatible with the previous theoretical researches in advanced countries. This findings show that in rapidly growing economy, marine crime occurrence is proportional to marine economic activity frequency. This result may reflect that marine crimes are different from land crimes.

The purpose of this thesis is to derive a theoretical model of the hysteretic resistance of the visco-elastic damper based on test results of harmonic excitation and to investigate of the basis of theory and experiment the effect of vibration control and response characteristics of portal frames degree vibration systems provided with the damper. The behaviour of a visco-elastic degree under dynamic loading is idealized by a model of the theory of visco-elasticity, i.e. a four-parameter model formed as a parallel combination of Maxwell fluid and Kelvin-Voigh models and its constitutive equation is derived. The model parameters are determined for a tested damper from the datas of harmonic excitation tests. The theoretical model of the damper is incorporated in equation fo motion of single degree of freedom. A computer program for solving the equation is written using Runge-kuttas's numerical integration scheme. Using this analysis program test cases of the earthquake excitation are simulated and the results of the simulation are the results of the simulation are the results of the simulation are compared with the test results.

To obtain low resistance and high efficiency energy-saving ship, minimum total resistance hull form design method is studied based on potential flow theory of wave-making resistance and considering the effects of tail viscous separation. With the sum of wave resistance and viscous resistance as objective functions and the parameters of B-Spline function as design variables, mathematical models are built using Nonlinear Programming Method (NLP) ensuring the basic limit of displacement and considering rear viscous separation. We develop ship lines optimization procedures with intellectual property rights. Series60 is used as parent ship in optimization design to obtain improved ship (Series60-1) theoretically. Then drag tests for the improved ship (Series60-1) is made to get the actual minimum total resistance hull form.
Artificial neural networks (ANNs), for a first time, were successfully developed for the prediction partial molar heat capacity of aqueous solutions at infinite dilution for various polar aromatic compounds over wide range of temperatures (303.55-623.20 K) and pressures (0.1-30.2 MPa). Two three-layered feed forward ANNs with back-propagation of error were generated using three (the heat capacity in T = 303.55 K and P = 0.1 MPa, temperature and pressure) and six parameters (four theoretical descriptors, temperature and pressure) as inputs and its output is partial molar heat capacity at infinite dilution. It was found that properly selected and trained neural networks could fairly represent dependence of the heat capacity on the molecular descriptors, temperature and pressure. Mean percentage deviations (MPD) for prediction set by the models are 4.755 and 4.642, respectively.

The purpose of this study is to predict the forming limit diagram (FLD) of strain-rate sensitive materials on the basis of the Marciniak and Kuczynski (M-K) theory. The strain-rate effect is taken into consideration in such a way that the stress-strain curves for various strain-rates are inputted into the formulation as point data, not as curve-fitted models such as power function. To solve the nonlinear system of equations derived from the equilibrium and constraints in the groove region and the safe zone, the Newton-Raphson method is used. The theoretical FLDs using four different yield criteria, that are von Mises, Hill (1948), Hill (1979), Logan and Hosford, are compared with the experimental, numerical (FEA) and other theoretical results. A new trial is made where a modified M-K model having n-step grooves is introduced to describe a real localized neck.
We are often faced with the task of having to estimate the hydrogen and helium ionizing luminosities of massive stars in the study of H II regions and the warm ionized medium (WIM). Using the results of the most complete compilation of stellar parameters (the effective temperature, stellar radius and surface gravity) and the latest Kurucz stellar atmosphere models, we calculate the ionizing photon luminosities in the $H^0\;and\;He^0$ continua from O3 to B5 stars. We compared the theoretical Lyman-continuum luminosity with the observationally inferred luminosity of the H II region around ${\alpha}$ Vir, and found that the theoretical value is higher than the observed value in contrast to the eariler result.
Astronomical observations strongly suggest that the expansion rate of our universe is currently under acceleration. The nature of the so-called dark energy causing the acceleration is unknown, and it is one of the fundamental mysteries in the present day theoretical cosmology. Here we briefly review the current state of cosmic dark energy research in both theoretical and observational sides. Constraints on dynamical dark energy models (e.g., w-fluid, quintessence, and modified gravity) with recent observational data from type Ia supernovae, cosmic microwave background radiation, and large-scale structures in the universe indicate a preferred direction toward the simplest ${\Lambda}$CDM world model. We also discuss some issues regarding the early dark energy model and the spherical collapse of matter in the presence of dark energy.

In the initial design phase of superscalar microprocessors, a performance model is necessary. A theoretic performance model is very useful since performance for various architecture parameters can be obtained by simply computing equations, without repeating simulations, Previous studies established theoretic performance models using the relation between the instruction window size and the issue width, with the penalties due to branch mispredictions and cache misses. However, the study was intended for unlimited number of functional units, which is insufficient for the real case application. This paper proposes a superscalar microprocessor theoretical performance model which also works for the limited functional units. To enhance the accuracy of our limited functional unit model, instruction dependency rates are employed. By using trace-driven data of SPEC 2000 integer programs as input, this paper shows that the theoretically computed performance of superscalar microprocessor with limited number of functional units is quite similar to the measured performance.

Kriging interpolation is one of the gennerally used interpolation techniques in Geostatics field. This research refers to the contents about important experimental variogram and the study of theoretical variogram and formulation of Kriging interpolation. Kriging interpolation is applied as interpolation for stress smoothing in finite element method. Posteriori error estimation which makes use of stress smoothing from the FEM is very important part, we try to make practical application of surface regeneration ability from Kriging interpolation. This research is necessary preceding one in order to materialize adaptive FTM through posteriori error estimation. For instance, find the estimate value and estimate the propriety through various theoretical variogram models of the reference analyzed from tensional L-shape domain. It also provides possibility of the Kriging interpolation through comparing to existing Least square method as well.
