Spring constants (displacement per unit applied load) of MEMS socket pins of given structures were computed by theoretical analysis and confirmed by the finite element method (FEM). In the theoretical analysis, the displacement of pins was calculated based on the 2-dimensional bending theory of the curved beam. For the 3-dimensional modeling, CATIA was used. After modeling, the raw data were transferred to ANSYS, which was employed in the 3-dimensional analysis for the calculation of the stress and strain and loaddisplacement The theoretical analysis and the FEM results were found to agree, with each showing the spring constants as 63.4 N/m within a reasonable load range. These results show that spring constants can be easily obtained through theoretical calculation without resorting to experiments and FEM analysis for simple and symmetric structures. For the some change of shape and structural stiffness, this theoretical analysis can be applied to MEMS socket pins.
This paper showed that theoretical site attenuation curves were obtained simply by the method of moments analysis for current integral equations on antennas. Since the expansion coefficients of driving and receiving points were calculated from the method of moments procedure, site attenuations were evaluated simply using these basic antenna parameters. Theoretical site attenuations were calculated with half-wave resonant dipoles connected directly to a 50 ohm receiving system and connected to a 72/50 ohm matching network, respectively. Results were compared with other theoretical studies reported so far. Also included were experimental results for site attenuations to prove the validity of theoretical analysis.
Lever mechanisms are usually employed to enlarge output displacement in precision stages. In this study, theoretical analysis of a lever is presented including bending effect and relation between dimension parameters and an objective function. The objective function is chosen as multiplication of magnification ratio and forcedisplacement transmission. Through theoretical analysis, this study presents optimal values for the parameters and the analysis is verified by finite element method.
In this paper, we present theoretical and experimental study on the viscous damping of the on-substrate torsional micromirrors, oscillating near the silicon substrates. In this theoretical study, we develop theoretical models and test structures for the viscous damping of the on-substrate torsional micromirrors. From a finite element analysis, we estimate the theoretical damping coefficients of the torsional micromirrors. From a finite element analysis, we estimate the theoretical damping coefficients of the torsional micromirrors, fabricated by the surface-micromaching process. From the electrostatic test of the fabricated devices, frequency-dependent rotationalvelocity of the micromirrors has been measured at the atmospheric pressure using devices, frequency-dependent rotational velocity of the micromirrors has been measured at the atmospheric pressure using the Mach-Zehnder interferometer system. Experimental damping coefficients have been extracted from the least square fit of the measured rotational velocity within the filter bandwidth of 150 kHz. We have compared the theoretical values and the experimental results on the dynamic performance of the micromirrors. The theoretical analysis overstimates the resonant frequency in the amount of 15%, while underestimating the viscous damping in the factors of 10%.
Subsea power cables are subjected to various external loads induced by environmental and mechanical factors during manufacturing, shipping, and installation. Therefore, the prediction of the structural strength is essential. In this study, experimental and theoretical analyses were performed to investigate the axial stiffness of subsea power cables. A uniaxial tensile test of a 6.5 m three-core AC inter-array subsea power cable was carried out using a 10 MN hydraulic actuator. In addition, the resultant force was measured as a function of displacement. The theoretical model proposed by Witz and Tan (1992) was used to numerically predict the axial stiffness of the specimen. The Newton-Raphson method was employed to solve the governing equation in the theoretical analysis. A comparison of the experimental and theoretical results for axial stiffness revealed satisfactory agreement. In addition, the predicted axial stiffness was linear notwithstanding the nonlinear geometry of the subsea power cable or the nonlinearity of the governing equation. The feasibility of both experimental and theoretical framework for predicting the axial stiffness of subsea power cables was validated. Nevertheless, the need for further numerical study using the finite element method to validate the framework is acknowledged.
In this paper, the free vibration characteristics of longitudinally corrugated cylindrical shells is investigated by the theoretical analysis. The equivalent homogenization model is adapted to investigate the overall mechanical behavior of these corrugated shells. The corrugated element can be represented as an orthotropic material. Both the effective extensional and flexural stiffness of this equivalent orthotropic material are considered in the analysis. To demonstrate the validity of the proposed theoretical approach, the theoretical results are compared with those from 3D finite element analysis using ANSYS commercial code. Some numerical results are presented to check the effect of the geometric properties.
2 types of geogrids and geotextiles was used to evaluate shear behaviors after installation damage test. Shear behaviors were compared after installation damage test and coefficient of resistance to direct sliding($f_{ds}$) was estimated by theoretical shear analysis. Shear strength of damaged geogrid decreased under high normal stress of 150kPa and shear strength of geotextile decreased with increasing normal stress. It is seen that $f_{ds}$ values after installation damage decreased than before installation damage through comparison calculated $f_{ds}$ by direct theoretical shear analysis. $f_{ds}$ values to be calculated by theoretical shear analysis were changed with before and after installation damage.
A theoretical model based on Rayleigh-Ritz method is proposed to predict the resonance frequency of a W/T(Wind Turbine) tower structure supported by guy cables. In order to verify the validity of the theoretical model, a reduced W/T tower system is manufactured and tested. Frequency response and mode data are determined by modal testing and finite element analysis is performed to calculate the natural frequency of the tower model. Numerical and experimental results are compared with those by the theoretical analysis. Parametric study by the theoretical model shows how the cable tension and cable elasticity influence the resonance frequency of the W/T tower structure. Finally, vibration response under various rotating speed is investigated to examine the possibility of severe resonance.
In this study, a theoretical analysis method was suggested for predicting forming loads of continuous deep drawing and ironing processes (D.D.I. processes) by considering back tension and continuity equation, and FEA for D.D.I. processes was performed. Dimensions of a punch and a mold on the basis of design rules for a CNG storage vessel were applied for the analysis. To verify the suggested theoretical analysis, the results of theoretical analysis were compared with both those of FEA and experiments of previous studies. As the result of analysis, the values and tendencies of the loads predicted by the theoretical analysis were in agreement with those of FEA and the experiments. So, it is considered that the analysis suggested has reliability for predicting the forming loads of the continuous processes(deep drawing+ironing(1)+ironing(2)).

In order to find a relationship between firefly luciferases structure and bioluminescence spectra, we focus on excited substrate geometries which may be affected by rigid luciferases. Density functional theory (DFT) and time dependent DFT (TDDFT) were employed. Changes in only six bond lengths of the excited substrate are important in determining the emission spectra. Analysis of these bonds suggests the mechanism whereby luciferases restrict more or less the excited substrate geometries and to produce multicolor bioluminescence.
