In this study, to explore the ways of the development of the effective and desirable teaching and learning materials for the elementary science gifted, relevant previous research results were critically examined and integrated. Then a theoretical background was established and specific materials in Life Areas of elementary science was developed based on the science knowledge construction types of 'What', 'How', and 'Why'. The results could be summarized as follows: (1) The types of educational programs for the science gifted were categorized and defined as 'General-Level','Early-Growing, Fast-Growing General Level', and 'Slow-Growing Enrichment, Excellence 'Types. (2) For 5th graders, in the unit of 'Environment and living Organisms', some activities of Enrichment Type for subject on 'Changes of Living Organism with Temperature' were developed following the processes of RDPE (Research-Development-Practice-Evaluation) and their ways of using and assessment were presented. On the basis of these results, several educational implications were discussed for further research and ways of applying to the science gifted education.
Rhizobium tropici CIAT 899 is capable of synthesizing inactive apo-glucose dehydrogenase (GDH). To become an active holo enzyme, the GDH requires a cofactor, PQQ. When R. tropici CIAT 899 was grown in a broth culture medium containing hydroxyapatite and pyrrolo quinoline quinone (PQQ), pH decreased while the concentration of soluble P increased. The solubilization of hydroxyapatite was associated with the production of gluconic acid and 2-ketogluconic acids. The organic acid production and P solubilization were greatly enhanced when the bacterium was grown with air supply. Effect of R. tropici CIAT 899 with (CI+PQQ) and without PQQ (CI) on the common bean growth was examined. Shoot and root weight, and N and P contents in CI+PQQ treatment, were significantly higher than those in control and CI treatment. Nodule weight and acetylene reducing activities were also significantly higher in CI+PQQ treatment than in other treatments.

Studies on cellular pathways and networks are now one of the most actively researched topics in all fields of biomedicine ranging from developmental biology to etiology. Many databases have been developed and quantitative simulation models have been proposed. One of the eventual goals of pathway/network studies is to integrate different types of pathway/network models and databases to simulate overall cellular responses. A bottleneck to this goal is modeling gene expression since the mechanism of this process is not yet fully unveiled. We are developing a small scale computer program called CiRMU (Cis-Regulatory Machinery Unit model) for describing, viewing, analyzing, and modeling the process of gene expression. A prototype system is being designed and implemented for analyzing functions of nuclear receptors.
Manuka honey (MH) has been shown anti-bacterial activity against several pathogenic bacteria. However, the inhibitory effect of MH on biofilm formation by Escherichia coli O157:H7 has not yet been examined. In this study, MH significantly reduced E. coli O157:H7 biofilm. Moreover, pre- and post-treatment with MH also significantly reduced E. coli O157:H7 biofilm. Cellular metabolic activities exhibited that the viability of E. coli O157:H7 biofilm cells was reduced in the presence of MH. Further, colony forming unit of MH-treated E. coli O157:H7 biofilm was significantly reduced by over 70%. Collectively, this study suggests the potential of anti-biofilm properties of MH which could be applied to control E. coli O157:H7.

Xylan is a major hemicellulose component of the cell walls of monocots and hardwood, representing up to 30% of the dry weight of these plants. To efficiently hydrolyze xylan, the endoxylanase gene from Bacillus sp. was expressed in B. subtilis DB431 by introducing the plasmid pJHKJ4. The total activity of the recombinant endoxylanase reached about 857 unit/ml by batch fermentation of B. subtilis DB431/pJHKJ4 in LB maltose medium. The majority (>92%) of endoxylanase was efficiently secreted into the culture medium. The recombinant endoxylanase hydrolyzed more the birchwood xylan efficiently than the other xylans. When 4 % concentration of xylan was used, the highest production of xylooligosaccharide was observed, and xylobiose and xylotriose were the major products. Optimal amount of enzyme and reaction time for producing xylooligosaccharide were found to be 10 unit and 1 hr, respectively. In addition, the temperature of $40^{\circ}C{\sim}50^{\circ}C$ gave the highest production of xylooligosaccharide. Consequently, the optimized conditions for the production of xylooligosaccharide through the hydrolysis of xylan were determined as follows: 10 unit endoxylanase, $50^{\circ}C$, 4% birchwood xylan, 1 hr reaction.
Purpose: The purpose of this study was to investigate the influence of perceptions of death, end-of-life (EOL) care stress, and emotional intelligence on attitudes toward EOL care among nurses in the neonatal intensive care unit (NICU). Methods: The participants were 111 nurses working in a NICU who had experienced EOL care at least once. Data were analyzed using the t-test, Pearson correlation coefficient, and stepwise multiple regression analysis in SPSS for Windows. Results: The mean score for perceptions of death was 3.16 out of 5, the mean score for EOL care stress was 3.61 out of 5, the mean emotional intelligence score was 4.66 out of 7, and the average score for EOL care attitudes was 2.77 out of 4. The factors affecting attitudes towards EOL care were academic degree, anxiety regarding death, negativity towards death, experiences of patient death, and emotional intelligence. The explanatory power of these variables for attitudes towards EOL care was 24.7%. Conclusion: The results of this study are expected to serve as a basic reference for the development of nursing education programs and EOL care protocols to improve attitudes toward EOL care among NICU nurses.
This study developed a settlement environment diagnostic indices (SEDI) of rural villages which can apply to analyze variable conditions of villages having development projects. The index consists of 5 diagnostic areas (first level) with 13 items (second level), including detail indices of 40 criteria (third level) defined by specialists' brainstorming process. In order to develop the index system, object-oriented approach was used to extract the 5 diagnostic areas (infra-basic settlement facility, life condition & environmental resources, industry & economic infrastructure, community, and residents) from rural villages. For the 40 criteria, it was introduced a quantification method that all villages have absolute values in national level, not relative value between villages within an unit area. The diagnostic diagram and table were developed to evaluate the villages compositively. The developed SEDI was applied to study areas, 56 villages in 2 subdivision areas of county, located on county of Keumsan. Applicability of the index system, database system should be developed with the surveying method of data in village level.
Purpose : Based on Quint's theory and the relevant literature, this study constructed a structural equation model for explaining and predicting end-of-life care performance in clinical nurses. Methods : A self-administered questionnaire was used to collect data from 265 nurses between September 1 and September 30, 2016. The data were analyzed using SPSS ver. 21 and AMOS ver. 21. Results : The goodness of fit of the modified model was found to be relatively satisfactory (χ2=114.82, Nomed χ2(χ2/df)=2.44, SRMR=.06, GFI=.94, AGFI=.89, CFI=.95, TLI=.91, RMSEA=.07). End-of-life care performance was affected by the attitudes toward nursing care of the dying, working unit, and death anxiety. The attitudes toward such care had the highest effect on end-of-life care performance. Conclusion : The results suggest that end-of-life care performance is directly and indirectly affected by attitudes toward nursing care of the dying, participation in end-of-life care education, working unit, death perception, and death anxiety. To improve clinical nurses' end-of-life care performance, effective programs to promote death anxiety and attitudes toward nursing care of the dying need to be developed. In addition, hospital nursing organizations should attempt to produce concrete measures for death anxiety and terminal care attitudes in clinical nurses.
Purpose : The purpose of this study was to identify the extent to which intensive care unit (ICU) nurses' perceptions of life-sustaining treatment decisions and "a good death" affect attitudes toward terminal care. Method : Participants included 109 ICU nurses from three university hospitals. Data were collected using structured questionnaires, and collected data were analyzed using a t-test, ANOVA, the $Scheff{\acute{e}}$ test, Pearson correlation coefficients, and a multiple regression analysis (SPSS 24.0 program). Results : Perceptions of life-sustaining treatment decisions and a sense of closeness (a constituent for the awareness of "a good death") were positively correlated with terminal care attitudes. The factors affecting terminal care attitudes were a clinical career in ICU (${\beta}=.20$, p =.035), a sense of closeness(${\beta}=.19$, p =.041), and the perception of a life-sustaining treatment decision (${\beta}=.22$, p =.017). This finding indicates that more than 10 years of experience in ICU, a greater sense of closeness, and a higher view of life-sustaining treatment decisions results in more positive attitudes toward terminal care. The explanatory power of these variables on terminal care attitudes was 14% (F=6.84, p < .001, Adj $R^2=.140$). Conclusion : A sense of closeness and the perception of life-sustaining treatment decisions were identified as the factors affecting terminal care attitudes. Thus, various programs must be developed to raise awareness among ICU nurses of "a good death" and perceptions of life-sustaining treatment decisions.

In this study, the appropriate unit cost in grassland establishment was redeveloped by the grassland establishment method and work criteria. The grassland establishment method was divided into tillage establishment (all logging) and no-tillage establishment (all logging and partial logging). The price for the work criteria by the establishment method was presented for each permission/authorization and establishment work. In permission/authorization for grassland establishment, the cost of each work criteria was of environmental impact (small scale environmental impact) assessment, disaster impact assessment, cadastral serving fee, forest survey, and connection fee for control of mountainous districts. In establishment was of logging, cleaning/gruffing, plowing/soil preparation, seeding, fertilization, livestock manure compost, seed, herbicide, labor cost (fertilizer, seed and herbicide), soil consolidation, cattle trail, and fence. The unit cost of grassland establishment was KRW 115,894,212 for the tillage establishment, and KRW 110,281,572 and KRW 106,680,122 for the all and partial logging of the no-tillage establishment, respectively. The current study redeveloped the establishment method, work criteria, and estimation of the unit cost of grassland establishment. It can be usefully used to carry out government projects to support related to establishment and maintenance of grassland.
