In this study, the objective of the study is to evaluate the effect of calcium carbonate powder, produced by the microbial reactions, on the strength of soft ground (sand). To analyze the cementation effects of calcium carbonate powder produced by microbial reactions on the strength of the sand, six different types of specimens (untreated, calcium carbonate, cement, carbonate+cement (1:9, 3:7, 5:5)) were made. The specimen were tested after curing (7 and 28 days). Uniaxial compressive strengths were measured on $D5cm{\times}H10cm$ specimens. Based on the test results, as both the weight ratio and the curing period increase, calcium carbonate, cement, and calcium carbonate+cement specimens showed an increase in the strength. In addition, compared with the strength of the specimen with cement, the strengths of the specimens with mixing ratios of 1:9, 3:7, and 5:5 (carbonate : cement) were found to be 93.5~95.8%, 825.%, 65.2~70.6%.
The most widely used parameter to represent rock abrasiveness is the Cerchar abrasivity index (CAI). The CAI value can be applied to predict wear in TBM cutters. It has been extensively demonstrated that the CAI is affected significantly by cementation degree, strength, and amount of abrasive minerals, i.e., the quartz content or equivalent quartz content in rocks. The relationship between the properties of rocks and the CAI is investigated in this study. A database comprising 223 observations that includes rock types, uniaxial compressive strengths, Brazilian tensile strengths, equivalent quartz contents, quartz contents, brittleness indices, and CAIs is constructed. A linear model is developed by selecting independent variables while considering multicollinearity after performing multiple regression analyses. Machine learning-based regression methods including support vector regression, regression tree regression, k-nearest neighbors regression, random forest regression, and artificial neural network regression are used in addition to multiple linear regression. The results of the random forest regression model show that it yields the best prediction performance.
Experimental and discrete element methods were used to investigate the effects of triple joints lengths and triple joint angle on the failure behavior of rock mass under uniaxial compressive test. Concrete samples with dimension of 20 cm × 20 cm × 5 cm were prepared. Within the specimen, three imbedded joint were provided. The joint lengths were 2 cm, 4cm and 6 cm. In constant joint lengths, the angle between middle joint and other joints were 30°, 60°, 90°, 120° and 150°. Totally 15 different models were tested under compression test. The axial load rate on the model was 0.05 mm/min. Concurrent with experimental tests, the models containing triple joints, length and joint angle are similar to the experiments, were numerical by Particle flow code in two dimensions (PFC2D). Loading rate in numerical modelling was 0.05 mm/min. Tensile strength of material was 1 MPa. The results show that the failure behaviors of rock samples containing triple joints were governed by both of the angle and the length of the triple joints. The uniaxial compressive strengths (UCS) of the specimens were related to the fracture pattern and failure mechanism of the discontinuities. Furthermore, it was shown that the compressive behavior of discontinuities is related to the number of the induced tensile cracks which are increased by decreasing the joint length. Along with the damage failure of the samples, the acoustic emission (AE) activities are excited. There were only a few AE hits in the initial stage of loading, then AE hits rapidly grow before the applied stress reached its peak. In addition, every stress drop was accompanied by a large number of AE hits. Finally, the failure pattern and failure strength are similar in both methods i.e., the experimental testing and the numerical simulation methods.
This paper investigated computationally and experimentally the interaction here between a notch as well as a micropore under uniaxial compression. Brazilian tensile strength, uniaxial tensile strength, as well as biaxial tensile strength are used to calibrate PFC2d at first. Then, uniaxial compression test was conducted which they included internal notch and micro pore. Experimental and numerical building of 9 models including notch and micro pore were conducted. Model dimensions of models are 10 cm × 10 cm × 5 cm. Joint length was 2 cm. Joints angles were 30°, 45° and 60°. The position of micro pore for all joint angles was 2cm upper than top of the joint, 2 cm upper than middle of joint and 2 cm upper than the joint lower tip, discreetly. The numerical model's dimensions were 5.4 cm × 10.8 cm. The fractures were 2 cm in length and had angularities of 30, 45, and 60 degrees. The pore had a diameter of 1 cm and was located at the top of the notch, 2 cm above the top, 2 cm above the middle, and 2 cm above the bottom tip of the joint. The uniaxial compression strength of the model material was 10 MPa. The local damping ratio was 0.7. At 0.016 mm per second, it loaded. The results show that failure pattern affects uniaxial compressive strength whereas notch orientation and pore condition impact failure pattern. From the notch tips, a two-wing fracture spreads almost parallel to the usual load until it unites with the sample edge. Additionally, two wing fractures start at the hole. Both of these cracks join the sample edge and one of them joins the notch. The number of wing cracks increased as the joint angle rose. There aren't many AE effects in the early phases of loading, but they quickly build up until the applied stress reaches its maximum. Each stress decrease was also followed by several AE effects. By raising the joint angularities from 30° to 60°, uniaxial strength was reduced. The failure strengths in both the numerical simulation and the actual test are quite similar.
Vermiculite-silica composites with a layered structure were fabricated by adding cellulose fibers as a pore former and by a simple uniaxial pressing and subsequent sintering process. Three different combinations of additives were used and their effects on the compressive strength and thermal conductivity of the composites were investigated. Both compressive strengths (42-128 MPa) and thermal conductivities (0.75-1.48 $W/m{\cdot}K$) in the direction perpendicular to the pressing direction (T) were higher than those (19-81 MPa and 0.32-1.04 $W/m{\cdot}K$) in the direction parallel to the pressing direction (S) in all samples. The anisotropy in both properties was attributed to the microstructural anisotropy, which was caused by the layered structure developed in the composites.
Experimental and discrete element approaches were used to examine the effects of F shape non-persistent joints on the failure behaviour of concrete under uniaxial compressive test. concrete specimens with dimensions of 200 cm×200 cm×50 cm were provided. Within the specimen, F shape non-persistent joint consisting three joints were provided. The large joint length was 6 cm, and the length of two small joints were 2 cm. Vertical distance between two small joints change from 1.5 cm to 4.5 cm with increment of 1.5 cm. In constant joint lengths, the angle of large joint change from 0° to 90° with increments of 30°. Totally 12 different models were tested under compression test. The axial load rate on the model was 0.05 mm/min. Concurrent with experimental tests, numerical simulation (Particle flow code in two dimension) were performed on the models containing F shape non-persistent joint. Distance between small joints and joint angles were similar to experimental one. the results indicated that the failure process was mostly governed by both of the Distance between small joints and joint angles. The axial loading rate on the model was 0.05 mm/min. The compressive strengths of the samples were related to the fracture pattern and failure mechanism of the discontinuities. Furthermore, it was shown that the compressive behaviour of discontinuities is related to the number of the induced tensile cracks which are increased by increasing the joint angle. In the first, there were only a few acoustic emission (AE) hits in the initial stage of loading, and then AE hits rapidly grow before the applied stress reached its peak. Furthermore, a large number of AE hits accompanied every stress drop. Finally, the failure pattern and failure strength are similar in both approaches i.e., the experimental testing and the numerical simulation approaches.
This study was made on the fact that the compressive strength characteristic of the recently developed alkali silica-sol chemical grout material was examined, whose grout material used for this study was designed to understand its strength property through the uniaxial compressive strength test(homo-gel, sand-gel), permeability test, deflection strength test, etc. In order to compare with the engineering characteristics regarding alkali silica-sol grout material and sodium silicate grout material. The uniaxial compressive strength of silica-sol grout material was identified to be increased more than 3~5 times than sodium silicate grout material at the early stage(within 72 hours). When comparing with the uniaxial compressive strengths of Sand-gel and Homo-gel at the material age of 28 days in case of silica-sol grouting material the strength of Sand-gel was measured to be about 1.3 times higher than Homo-gel. In case of silica-sol, it is assumed to have the property to exert high strength when it is actually grouted into the ground. As a result of permeability test it is judged that it is possible to apply the silica-sol to the site in the place requiring the water cut-off as the silica-sol. As a result of testing the strength at the material age of 28 days of grouting-use silica-sol showed more than 3 times' difference than the sodium silicate grouting material.

The acoustic emission (AE) is proposed as a feasible method for the real-time monitoring of the structural damage evolution in concrete materials that are typically used in the storage of nuclear wastes. However, the characteristics of AE signals emitted from concrete structures subjected to various environmental conditions are poorly identified. Therefore, this study examines the AE characteristics of the concrete structures during uniaxial compression, where the storage temperature and immersion conditions of the concrete specimens varied from 15℃ to 75℃ and from completely dry to water-immersion, respectively. Compared with the dry specimens, the water-immersed specimens exhibited significantly reduced uniaxial compressive strengths by approximately 26%, total AE energy by approximately 90%, and max RA value by approximately 70%. As the treatment temperature increased, the strength and AE parameters, such as AE count, AE energy, and RA value, of the dry specimens increased; however, the temperature effect was only minimal for the immersed specimens. This study suggests that the AE technique can capture the mechanical damage evolution of concrete materials, but their AE characteristics can vary with respect to the storage conditions.

A laboratory investigation was conducted to characterize the constitutive property behavior of Cor-Tuf, an ultra-high-performance composite concrete. Mechanical property tests (hydrostatic compression, unconfined compression (UC), triaxial compression (TXC), unconfined direct pull (DP), uniaxial strain, and uniaxial-strain-load/constant-volumetric-strain tests) were performed on specimens prepared from concrete mixtures with and without steel fibers. From the UC and TXC test results, compression failure surfaces were developed for both sets of specimens. Both failure surfaces exhibited a continuous increase in maximum principal stress difference with increasing confining stress. The DP tests results determined the unconfined tensile strengths of the two mixtures. The tensile strength of each mixture was less than the generally assumed tensile strength for conventional strength concrete, which is 10 percent of the unconfined compressive strength. Both concretes behaved similarly, but Cor-Tuf with steel fibers exhibited slightly greater strength with increased confining pressure, and Cor-Tuf without steel fibers displayed slightly greater compressibility.
The concrete plates are most widely used structural elements in the hulls of floating concrete structures such as concrete barges and pontoons, bridge decks, basement floors and liquid storage tanks. The study on the behavior of high-strength fiber reinforced concrete (HSFRC) plates was carried out to evaluate the performance of plates under in-plane and transverse loads. The plates were tested in simply supported along all the four edges and subjected to in-plane and traverse loads. In this experimental program, twenty four 150 mm diameter cylinders and twelve plate elements of size $600{\times}600{\times}30$ mm were prepared and tested. Water-to-cementitious materials ratios of 0.3 and 0.4 with 10% and 15% silica fume replacements were used in the concrete mixes. The fiber volume fractions, $V_f$ = 0%, 1% and 1.5% with an aspect ratio of 80 were used in this study. The HSFRC mixes had the concrete compressive strengths in the range of 52.5 to 70 MPa, flexural strengths ranging from 6.21 to 11.08 MPa and static modulus of elasticity ranging from 29.68 to 36.79 GPa. In this study, the behavior of HSFRC plate elements subjected to combined uniaxial in-plane and transverse loads was investigated.
