  • The national mathematics curriculum revised in 2007 emphasized students' mathematical communication and the curriculum is currently applied to all grades. In order to promote students' mathematical communication, the teacher needs to understand full implications and apply them to instruction. This study examined how teachers employed mathematical communication in their instruction and how they perceived it. The results showed that teachers had lack of understanding of student-centered instruction and mathematical communication. They also did not use various representation activities and discussion-based activities as expected. The number of students per classroom was reported by teachers as a main barrier to promote mathematical communication, but it did not make substantial differences in practice. Building on the results, this paper included implications for improving teachers' conception of mathematical communication.

  • The purpose of this study is to present the importance of systematic database education in elementary and secondary schools in Korea. The authors compared the curriculum for database education in elementary and secondary schools of Gyeongsangbuk-do province in Korea with that of Arcola schools in the state of Illinois, US. The database industries of both countries were also compared to suggest the significance of database education in Korea. We have shown that it is urgent to include database education in IT curriculum for elementary and secondary schools in Korea considering importance of database itself as well as the magnitude and growth rate of database industries in 21st century. Contrary to our research results, however, it is shown the IT curriculums of elementary and secondary schools in Korea is hardly adequate to provide systematic database education required in information society. Based on these results, we conclude that IT curriculums should be revised to accommodate systematic database education for elementary and secondary schools in Korea.

  • The purpose of this study was to find out how to operate Technology Home Economics in the 2009 revised national curriculum and Home Economics teachers perception on the current states in the middle schools, focused on intensive course-taking, block-time, and total hours to take the course. Data were collected from the 118 Home Economics teachers nationwide through e-mail from May 25 to June 4, 2011, and analyzed with frequencies, percentage, means, t-test, cross-tabulations, and ANOVA. The results showed that Technology Home Economics was intensively taken in the most of all schools(91.5%) during 4 semesters by senior and freshmen or junior. Teachers were relatively less involved in the decision making process for intensive course-taking than did the school managers and dissatisfied with the fact of intensive course-taking. But a few school adopted block-time and most teachers did not think it was necessary. Over half of schools offered the same 16 hours of Technology Home Economics as in the previous 2007 revised curriculum, but nearly 2 out of 5 schools reduced the hours from 1 to 8 with an average of 2.8 hours. To keep the necessary hours to teach the full contents of Technology Home Economics should be protected. The follow-up research needs to be conducted to investigate the changes in the perception of Home Economics teachers.

  • 'Sentence posing' is newly given in the third through sixth grade mathematics textbooks of the revised 2007 curriculum to confirm students' understanding on mathematical concepts of definitions. In this paper, we discuss the role of the sentence posing in the third grade mathematics textbooks on the basis of the problems occurred in third graders' sentence posing activities. Overall, it turned out that the role of the sentence posing was somewhat restrictive. Hence the sentence posing needs to be applied to check whether students can properly use the definitions in real life situations. In addition, it is necessary to employ the present role of the sentence posing to confirm students' understanding on mathematical concepts of definitions selectively according to the concepts of definitions.

  • This research intends to give a practice of mathematics lesson-critique and some perspectives on a mathematics lesson in the elementary school level. We carried out a mathematics lesson-critique on a lesson chosen as a good lesson by a local educational district in Korea. The main themes of mathematics lesson-critique were the reconstruction of lesson models, the pursuit of relational understanding, the activation of mathematical communication, and the didactical transformation by a in-service teacher. Meanwhile we confirmed that we need to discuss the properness and adequateness of contents about division of natural numbers given in the elementary mathematics textbook and teachers' guide according to the revised 2007 mathematics curriculum.

  • Current mathematics It is necessary to ensure that ratio and proportion concept is not distorted or broken while being treated as if they were easy to teach and learn in school. Therefore, the purpose of this study is to analyze the activities presented in the textbook. Based on prior work, this study reinterpreted the proportional reasoning task from the proportional perspective of Beckmann and Izsak(2015) to the multiplicative structure of Vergnaud(1996) in four ways. This compared how they interpreted the multiplicative structure and relationships between two measurement spaces of ratio and rate units and proportional expression and proportional distribution units presented in the revised textbooks of 2007, 2009, and 2015 curriculum. First, the study found that the proportional reasoning task presented in the ratio and rate section varied by increasing both the ratio structure type and the proportional reasoning activity during the 2009 curriculum, but simplified the content by decreasing both the percentage structure type and the proportional reasoning activity. In addition, during the 2015 curriculum, the content was simplified by decreasing both the type of multiplicative structure of ratio and rate and the type of proportional reasoning, but both the type of multiplicative structure of percentage and the content varied. Second, the study found that, the proportional reasoning task presented in the proportional expression and proportional distribute sections was similar to the previous one, as both the type of multiplicative structure and the type of proportional reasoning strategy increased during the 2009 curriculum. In addition, during the 2015 curriculum, both the type of multiplicative structure and the activity of proportional reasoning increased, but the proportional distribution were similar to the previous one as there was no significant change in the type of multiplicative structure and proportional reasoning. Therefore, teachers need to make efforts to analyze the multiplicative structure and proportional reasoning strategies of the activities presented in the textbook and reconstruct them according to the concepts to teach them so that students can experience proportional reasoning in various situations.

  • Since open inquiry of science was formally introduced at the 2007 Revised Science Curriculum Course, the purpose and effect of it has been positively evaluated, and it is underlined continuously until the revised science education course in 2015. However, through many previous studies, there is still a lack of awareness of open inquiry of both students and teachers in the field, and it was revealed they are continually appealing confusion and difficulties. Therefore, in this research, we analyzed the causes that make it difficult to execute open inquiry, and developed differentiated open inquiry guide materials that can contribute to the realization of teachers and students. They were developed by the brain-based evolutionary approach to provide students with authentic science. The brain-based evolutionary approach is reflecting the evolutionary attributes and the brain functions associated activities of scientists. It was revealed that, in the same way as the pilot test results, the usefulness of the differentiated guide materials were very high, and there was a statistically significant difference in the science attitude. It was found that the application of the brain-based evolutionary approach had positively influenced the stage of determining the inquiry themes, and self-confidence that could be able to do as a scientist. Analysis of top and sub group types on the basis of inquiry ability showed that both groups are improved at science attitude by the differentiated guide materials. There was a positive effect on change in the self-perception of scientific creativity. We were able to see a positive change in the post survey for open inquiry-efficacy. The developed differentiated open inquiry guide materials contributed to the improvement of open inquiry-efficacy for both the teacher and student.

  • This study aims to design, develop the impact of a high school course in practical problem- focused teaching plan which will enable students to deal with an aging society, and prepare well for the aging by looking at issues the elderly face. This study set a target of analyzing the 2007 revised curriculum manual to develop instructor-led teaching and learning plans for 'Successful aging preparation'. Five common subjects were reframed on a practical problem basis through factor analysis of preliminary research regarding aging education for teenagers and the 2007 revised curriculum and textbooks of Technology Home Economics, and Human Development. The practical problem was 'What do we need to do to Successfully live an independent life in aging?', and the subjects studied to answer this question were the aging society and population changes. the nature of the elderly, aging preparation, care of the elderly, and welfare services for the elderly. These five subjects were grouped under the main categories of The Aging Society. Understanding the Elderly, and aging Preparation. The ultimate objective of the lessons was, through critical reasoning, to inquire into the causes of current problems the elderly face so that teenagers can understand aging societies and the elderly, and prepare for a Successful aging. Another objective was to seek reasonable alternatives for teenagers as they prepare for Successful and independent aging, and increase their problem-solving abilities in choosing the best course of action by considering the ripple effect of consequences of each of those alternatives. The practical problem-teaching lesson plans consisted of five classes on practical reasoning instruction. This study suggests that new high school curricula should include lessons on preparation for aging so that students can deal successfully with our aging society.

  • In the elementary school mathematics textbook that has been revised in 2013, the instructional sequence for teaching addition and subtraction, which had remained unchanged for three decades since 1982, was finally changed in 2013. Particularly, the addition and subtraction of two-digit numbers without regrouping, such as 72+25=97 or 85-24=61, are taught earlier than the composing and decomposing of the number 10 using other numbers. This study examines the appropriacy and validity of these changes. However, the reason for these changes in the national curriculum or teacher's guide could not be determined. Further, several references emphasize the addition of two single-digit numbers, such as 7+8=15, and the subtraction of a single-digit number from a number between 11 and 19, such as 16-9=7, as basic facts. In other countries' textbooks, the teaching of addition and subtraction up to the number 20 is prioritized before teaching the addition and subtraction of two-digit numbers without regrouping. The results of this study indicate that these changes in the instructional sequence in the textbook that was revised in 2013 need to be reconsidered.

  • The purpose of this study is to analyze the cognitive demands level of the description about 'element', 'periodic table', and 'atom' on the 'science 2' textbooks by the 2007 revised curriculum. The three types of CAT (Curriculum Analysis Taxonomy) have been used to analyze the cognitive demands level of those contents on the 6 kinds of 'science 2' textbooks. The cognitive demands level about 'elements' on many textbooks is a late concrete operational stage, because the descriptions of 'element' are pure substances or no more split into anything simpler substances. That cognitive demands level about one textbook is a early formal operational stage, because the descriptions 'element' are a substance of one kind of atom. The cognitive demands level of 'periodic table' on many textbooks is a late concrete operational stage, because the descriptions about 'periodic table' are the hierarchical classification for the categorizing reality. And the cognitive demands level of 'periodic table' is a early formal operational stage, because the descriptions about 'periodic table' are a collection of 'families' or two-way gradation of elements. That cognitive demands level about one textbook is a late formal operational stage, because the descriptions of 'periodic table' are a complex classificatory structure linking atomic structure. The cognitive demands level about 'atom' is a early formal operational stage because of the descriptions as "atoms have structure, some atoms are the same, or others are different".
