  • This study examines the issue of causality between ocean industries and urban economic growth in the sea port city. To maximize economic advantage of Busan as a sea port city, we first need to analyze the effects of ocean industries on urban economic growth. This study focuses on the examination of the role of ocean industries and its related variations in economic growth at the urban level. Using data from Busan. Metropolitan City in Korea during 1985-2011, we find that the causality link between ocean industries and urban economic growth rates runs in both directions. Especially, industries of shipping/port, marine tourism, and shipbuilding were the most important variables in Busan economy. With this information, the empirical results show that ocean industries and its related variations have significant effects on urban economic growth. Based on these significant research findings, theoretical and practical implications were discussed.

  • This study explores ways to improve the actual conditions of ocean environment by conducting a comparative study on the current sea-water quality of Busan Metropolitan City and Incheon Metropolitan City that are representative sea port cities in Korea. The indices used to evaluate the sea-water quality include water temperature, salt content, PH, DO, COD, DIN, T-N, DIP, T-P, Sio2-Si, floating materials, and Chi-a. The findings of the analysis can be summarized as follows: First, ocean environmental states of Busan Metropolitan City and Incheon Metropolitan City are getting increasingly worse between the year of 2000 and 2003. Second, T-N, DIP and T-P have been main contributors in worsening ocean environmental states of Busan Metropolitan City and Incheon Metropolitan City.

  • Many rivers and seas have been affected by environmental contamination. Therefore, city water supplies often require a high-degree purification treatment to provide safe drinking water. However, in order to achieve a high-degree purification treatment, a large amount of chlorine has to be added to sterilize city drinking water. The added chlorine reacts chemically with water and forms hypochlorous and chlorine ions. The hypochlorous ionizes with hypochlorous ions and hydrogen ions. As a result, the city water contains a large amount of chlorine ion. As such, when city water is used with domestic boilers, many kinds of heat exchangers, and the engines of vehicle and ships, there are often corrosion problems. In this study, alkali water was electrochemically made by electrolysis of city water, and corrosion properties between alkali and city water were investigated with an electrochemical method. Most of the chlorine ions are thought to not be contained in the alkali water because the alkali water is created in the cathodic chamber with an electrolysis process. In other words, the chlorine ion can be mostly removed by its migration from a cathodic chamber to an anodic chamber. Moreover, the alkali water also contains a large amount of hydroxide ion. The alkali water indicated relatively good corrosion resistance compared to the city water and the city water exhibited a local corrosion pattern due to the chlorine ion created by a high-degree purification treatment. In contrast, the alkali water showed a general corrosion pattern. Consequently, alkali water can be used with cooling water to inhibit local corrosion by chlorine ions in domestic boilers, various heat exchangers and the engine of ships and for structural steel in a marine structure.

  • The dynamic response characteristics of a floating ocean city are examined for presenting the basic data for the design of huge offshore structures supported by a large number of floating bodies in waves. The numerical approach which is accurate in linear system is based on combination of a three dimensional source distribution method, wave interaction theory and the finite element method of using the space frame element. The hydrodynamic interactions among the floating bodies are taken into account in their exact form within the context of linear potential theory in the motion and structural analysis. The method is applicable to an arbitrary number of three dimensional bodies having any individual body geometries and geometrical arrangement with the restriction that the circumscribed, bottom-mounted. Imaginary vertical cylinder for each body does not contain any part of the other body. The validity of this procedure was verified by comparing with experimental results obtained in the literature.

  • Busan Metropolitan City is the 3rd Marine City, which has the largest Container port facility and logistic system in the world. However, Busan Citizen's maritime consciousness does not reach that level. This study figures out the problems, and suggests the revitalization of Ocean Education in Busan. This is for the revitalization of the reputation as a Marine City Busan, construction the hydrophil culture and propagation of ocean culture.

  • Korea is the 5th Maritime Power in the world, especially, Busan Metropolitan City is the 3rd Marine City, which has the largest Container port facility and logistic system in the world. However, Busan Citizen's maritime consciousness does not reach that level. This study points out the problems, which are insufficiency of linkage among maritime education institutes, uniformity of ocean education programs, incomplete ocean education system, inadequate management of ocean education programs and shortage of professional instructors. To solve these problems, it is necessary to develop the ocean education modules, establish the ocean education course and put into formal education course to maximize the education effectiveness. This is for the improvement of the reputation as a Marine City Busan, construction the hydrophil culture and propagation of ocean culture.
