As a result, global economy gradually develops to knowledge-based economy, and Business Service Industry becomes essential to the production increase in the manufacturing industry as well as its high added value comes into the spotlight as one of rapidly growing business industry. Business Service Industry has not yet been academically established, however, it may be defined as the industry of which production is a mediating service in the production process rather than in the final consumption. The export of the manufacturing industry has traditionally played mainstream role in Korea where economic development has been centered on the manufacturing export. However, as with increasing emphasis on the role of service sector and highly developed industrial field in the national economy, not only the relationships between manufacturing industry and service industry becomes rapidly more involved, but also the importance of highly competitive service industry becomes emphasized in accordance with open global economy after WTO system takes off. Now it is time we come to the realization that service is in the center of national competitive power as a result of global door open in all service industry.

  • The sharing economy is recognized as a new economic system based on the digital service platform, but the sharing economy has yet to be established in Korea due to a lack of social awareness and understanding. There is a need to enhance understanding and awareness of the sharing economy in positive perspective in order to make up business with advanced economies global and explore new markets. In this study, after collecting papers of the sharing economy over the past decade published by each academic field around the world, we reviewed them from academic lens and conducted a comprehensive analysis using meta analysis methodology. Then, we selected papers of MIS field and analyzed the trends of the MIS field research in these papers. As a result we identified the research trend of the sharing economy and the MIS research and drew the necessity of interdisciplinary research between the two studies by examining importance and relevance of MIS research in the sharing economy research. Therefore, we expect that this study contributes to promote interdisciplinary research with neighboring disciplines and to establish a positive social, economical and industrial position in Korea.

  • This paper aims to examine the ways in which the Singaporean government has promoted the "global city" imaging strategy as a means for marketing Singapore. Since the 1990s, Singapore has pursued a place-marketing strategy that aims at imaging itself as a "creative", "culturally vibrant" and "cosmopolitan" global city by utilizing various cultural, tourist and spatial policy measures. It argues that the Singaporean government has promoted this particular imaging strategy under a broader economic resoucturing program, aiming at transforming the Singapore's economy into a "knowledge-driven" one, under which the attraction of international knowledge workers is seen as crucial for the competitiveness and innovation. This paper also discusses the limitations of this strategy, focusing on growing tensions between the global and the local in the Singaporean society and the ways in which the authoritarian and top-down nature of governance have restricted the genuine development of the "culturally vibrant" environment in Singapore.

  • Under a knowledge-based economy, regional innovation policies have been treated as important regional policies. In this paper, the author attempts to argue the possibilities and problems for regional innovation in Japan. For this purpose, the author has investigated the development of industry-academy-government collaboration in Ube City which has been designated as one of a number of knowledge cluster projects by the National Government. Ube City is a typical company town and the regional system had been characterized by the vertical relationship between a core company and it's subcontractors. Since the late 19905, the local national university has played an important role to promote cooperation with various types of enterprises, research institutions, and local governments. As such horizontal relationships have become more influential, it is necessary to overcome the gap in interest and knowledge base between the core company and the local university.

  • In the knowledge-based economy, the accumulation of technological knowledge is undoubtedly the core competency to reinforce the competitiveness of individual firms and to raise the innovation capability of social and economic systems. Thus far, however, only single or fragmentary indicators, such as R&D expenditure, R&D stock, the number of researchers and the number of R&D employees have been adopted to measure the amount of technological knowledge. In this research, we suggest an approach for aggregating and structuring respective indicators. Applying correlation and factor analysis, we examine the relationship among nine conventional proxy measures for technological knowledge and present a new approach for gauging an aggregated measure.
