This study aimed to analyze water cycle at Taehwa river, Dongcheon, Hoiya river and Cheongryang cheon in Ulsan city using CAT model developed by Korea Institute of construction technology. To apply CAT model, we separated Teahwa river into 25, Dongcheon into 11, Hoiya river into 17 and Cheongryangcheon into 5 subbasins and discriminated between contribution runoff basins and source basins. The results of water cycle analysis performed using rainfall datas measured from 1975 and 2008 and hydrologic datas of change of land use etc. were that surface runoff increase and interflow decrease, caused by the increase of impervious area. The increases of surface runoff at the basin of Taehwa river and Dongcheon which is a tributary of Taehwa river were small and similar to each other respectively as 1.7% and 2.4%, and increased high rate of 3.2% and 7.7% in Hoiya river and Cheongryangcheon including subbasins which are having high rate of urbanization.
The objective of this study is to apply the modular furniture system, which has been developed actively in western Europe and America since 1970's, to Korean contemporary furniture having converted into western style gradually. The factors requiring the modular furniture system in today's residential environment are as follows; 1. Population increase and urbanization 2. Development of industrial technology 3. Improvement of living condition and change of life style. As these factors increase the problem of diminishing space, multiple functional modular furniture concept has become a solution. Reviewing the current scene of the western modular furniture system, it is classified into modular seating system, mopular wall system, modular commode system and modular storage system. Korean wardrobe, which is am mixed style of traditional and contemporary furniture, should change to a closet eventually because of the grand size and unpractical use of space. Since most Korean family, however, have wardrobes already, it will be necessary to have a turning period to systemized the closet space in Korean residential interior. For the turning period, application of the modular wall system would be one answer to substitute the wardrobe.
Deep soil mixing, DSM technique has been widely used to improve the engineering properties of problematic soils. Due to growing urbanization and the industrial developments, disposal of brick dust poses a big problem and causes environmental problems. This study aims to use brick dust in DSM application in order to minimize the waste in brick industry and to evaluate its effect on the improvement of the geotechnical properties. Three different percentages of cement content: (10, 15 and 20%) were used in the formation of soil-cement mixture. Unlike the other studies in the literature, various percentages of waste brick dust: (10, 20 and 30%) were used as partial replacement of cement in soil-cement mixture. The results indicated that addition of waste brick dust into soil-cement mixture had positive effect on the inherent strength and stiffness of loose sand. Cement replaced by 20% of brick dust gave the best results and reduced the final setting time of cement and resulted in an increase in unconfined compressive strength, modulus of elasticity and resilient modulus of sand mixed with cement and brick dust. The findings were also supported by the microscopic images of the specimens with different percentages of waste brick dust and it was observed that waste brick dust caused an increase in the interlocking between the particles and resulted in an increase in soil strength. Using waste brick dust as a replacement material seems to be promising for improving the geotechnical properties of loose sand.
The aging of the population has a fundamental impact on the national economy, including decline in productive population, atrophy of available funds, slowdown of technological innovation, slowdown of economic growth, and decrease in vitality of society as a whole. Increase of elderly population would lead to increase in elderly welfare consumers, which would also lead to increase the demand for elderly welfare services. However, due to the continuation of the low birth rate, there is a great shortage of human resources who can handle this. In such a situation, the main goal of the elderly welfare system in the future should aim to actively try to design effective policies, prepare systems, and implement services for the problems of the aged society, and to find ways to expand the finances, manpower, methods, and facilities necessary for the welfare of the elderly. Elderly welfare services in Korea have been changed and developed in accordance with socioeconomic changes such as industrialization and urbanization. This study examines the changes in elderly welfare services in Korea by the flow of times and presents a method which utilizes artificial intelligence and Internet of Things in services for the elderly welfare consumers to improve both quality and efficiency.
As impermeable layer continues to increase with the urbanization process, direct input of nonpoint source pollutants into water bodies via stormwater has caused serious effects on the aquatic ecosystem. Potential applications of rain gardens are increasing not only as best management practices (BMP) for reducing the level of nonpoint source pollutants but also as an ecological engineering alternative for low impact development (LID). In this study, remediation performance of various planting types, such as a mixed planting system with shrubs and herbaceous plants, was assessed quantitatively to effectively manage stormwater and increase landscape applicability. The mixed planting system with Rhododendron lateritium and Zoysia japonica showed the highest removal performance of $76.9{\pm}7.6%$ and $58.4{\pm}5.0%$ for total nitrogen and $89.9{\pm}7.9%$ and $82.4{\pm}5.2%$ for total phosphorus at rainfall intensities of 2.5 mm/h and 5.0 mm/h, respectively. The mixed planting system also showed the highest removal performance for heavy metals. The results suggest that a rain garden with the mixed planting system has high potential applicability as a natural reduction system for nonpoint source pollutants in order to manage stormwater with low concentrations of pollutants and will increase water recycling in urban areas.

Spatial-temporal meteorological features of the Ulsan metropolitan region (UMR) were analyzed using observations and high-resolution numerical modeling. Long-term trend analysis (1970~2013) showed a significant increase of $0.033^{\circ}Cyr^{-1}$ in the 5-year moving average temperature, although detailed short-term features varied, whereas wind speed and relative humidity over the same period displayed clear decreases of $-0.007ms^{-1}$ and $-0.29%yr^{-1}$, respectively. These trends indicate the effects of regional climate change and urbanization in the UMR. Seasonal variations averaged for the most recent three years, 2011~2013, showed that temperatures in three different regions (urban/industrial, suburban, coastal areas) of the UMR had similar seasonality, but significant differences among them were observed for a certain season. Urban and industrial complex regions were characterized by relatively higher temperatures with large differences (max.: $3.6^{\circ}C$) from that in the coastal area in summer. For wind speed, strong values in the range from 3.3 to $3.9ms^{-1}$ occurred in the coastal areas, with large differences clearly shown between the three regions in September and October. Diurnal variations of temperature were characterized by pronounced differences during the daytime (in summer) or nighttime (in winter) between the three regions. Results from the WRF modeling performed for four months of 2012 showed large variations in gridaverage temperature and winds in the UMR, which displayed significant changes by season. Especially, a clear temperature rise in the urban center was identified in July ($0.6^{\circ}C$ higher than nearby urban areas), and overall, relatively weak winds were simulated over urban and inland suburban regions in all seasons.

The consumption of meat is increasing in India and agriculture is considered as the backbone of a majority of people. Livestock plays a significant role, and poultry and dairy are the major sectors contributing to economic development. The majority of meats consumed in India are fish, bovine, mutton, goat, pig, and poultry. In Indian context, culture, traditions, customs, and taboos influence meat consumption to a great extent. However, studies show that urbanization has been causing a rise in demand for meat products. India is the world's second largest exporter of beef. In India, 95% of goat meat produced is consumed locally. Meat consumption, in particular, is determined by the religions where pork is forbidden to Muslims and beef is prohibited to Hindus. The preference and consumption of chicken meat can be considered as a universal phenomenon and chicken meat is greatly accepted by consumers in India as compared to the other meat consumption. The increase of chicken meat consumption is due to the versatility of the meat, relatively low cost in comparison to other meat, and the acceptance of the chicken meat to all religions. There has been a great rise in the production of livestock products and this is expected to continue in the future. The pattern of meat consumption depends considerably on culture, tradition and urbanization. This review was formulated with the objective of identifying the meat consumption patterns in a typical Indian society.
Background: In this study, we proposed that the population dynamics of non-native red-eared sliders (Trachemys scripta elegans) depends on the species' habitat extension and survivorship. We used a logistic equation with time-dependent habitat carrying capacity. In detail, the present carrying capacity depends on the red-eared slider population of the previous year. Anthropogenic activities such as the abandonment of previously captive red-eared sliders or the release due to religion customs would supply new habitats to the species. Therefore we assumed that anthropogenic spread increases the habitat carrying capacity. Based on the urbanization increase rate of 3% in Korea from 1980 to 2000, we assumed an annual spread of 3% to simulate the population dynamics of the red-eared slider. In addition, the effect on the population of an increase of natural habitats due to migration was simulated. Results: The close relationship between the distributions of non-native red-eared sliders and of urbanized areas demonstrates that urbanization plays an important role in providing new habitats for released individuals. Depending on the survivorship, the population of the red-eared slider in Korea increased 1.826 to 3.577 times between 1980 and 2000. To control population growth, it is necessary to reduce carrying capacity by reducing habitat expansion through prohibition of release into the wild ecosystem and careful managements of the wetland or artificial ponds. Changes in the habitat carrying capacity showed that the population fluctuated every other year. However, after several years, it converged to a consistent value which depended on the survivorship. Further, our results showed that if red-eared sliders expand their habitat by natural migration, their population can increase to a greater number than when they have a 99% survivorship in a fixed habitat. Conclusions: Further introductions of red-eared sliders into wetlands or artificial ponds should be prohibited and managed to prevent future spread of the species. Moreover, it is important to reduce the species' survivorship by restoring disturbed ecosystems and maintaining healthy ecosystems.
Since 1962, Korea has made a remarkable progress with continuous success of Five-Year Economic Development Plans. Over the last 30 years, Korea has achieved a fast growth in various industries including heavy industry and chemical industry with rapid urbanization at the same time. The fast industrialization and urbanization brought about huge amount of hazardous/toxic substances and wastes. The environmental pollution problems have now emerged from regional concerns to overall social issues accordingly. The situation has come to a point where pollution control and environment preservation have become one of the nation's major policies. Following the recent Earth Summit of UNCED Conference held in Riode Janeiro in June 1992, where the topic was environmentally sound and sustainable development, awareness upon the importance of environmental preservation has been heightened globally, The environmental issues will gradually influence the international society more and more, politically as well as economically, The environmental pollution control industry in Korea started in the early 70's with the development of the nation's industrialization, As the people's awareness on pollution increases and environmental laws and enforcing regulations were established, demand for pollution control began to increase. The environmental pollution control business came to be recognized as an independent industry in the mid'70's. It should be evaluated properly that over the last 30 years, the Korean pollution control industry has supplied locally manufactured pollution control facilities to the increasing local demand. Concerning the quality and customer satisfaction, however, there are still many aspects which need to be improved compared with those of advanced countries. Although the start of the pollution control industry in Korea is just 10 to 15 years behind the advanced countries such as Japan and European countries, current gap in the environmental technology is rather considerable. And, studies should be made to find out the reasons for the current technology gap, and therefore, to implement solutions to improve the technology and competitiveness of the environmental pollution control industry in Korea.
The increase of the solar reradiation from urban areas relative to suburban due to urbanization heats up the air temperature in urban areas and this is called the urban heat island (UHI) effect. This UHI effect has a positive relationship with the degree of urbanization. Through the studies on UHI using the satellite imagery, the effect of the surface heat radiation was observed by verifying the relationship between the air temperature and the land cover types (surface materials such as urban, vegetation, etc.). In this study, however, the surface temperature distribution was studied in terms of land use types for Seoul. Using land use types, the surface temperature in urban areas such as residential, industrial, and commercial areas in Yeongdeungpo, highly packed with industrial and residential buildings, was maximum $6^{\circ}C$ higher than in the bare ground, which indicated that the surface temperature reflected the pattern of the human-consumed energy on the areas and showed that one of the important causes influencing the air temperature except the surface heat reradiation by the sun is the anthropogenic heat. Also, the effect due to the restoration of the Chunggae stream on UHI was investigated. The average surface temperature for the Chunggae stream was reduced about $0.4^{\circ}C$ after restoration. Considering that each satellite image pixel includes mixture of several materials such as concrete and asphalt, the average surface temperature might be much lower locally reducing UHI near the stream.
