This study examined the biological characteristics of the insect and examined potential cultural controls using peduncle topping methods. Ginseng stem fungus gnat eggs hatched after 5 days; ecdysis lasted 3-4 weeks, and after 5 days pupation, adults emerged. Adults deposited eggs 1-2 days after emerging, and the entire life cycle lasted 32-40 days. The fungus gnats laid eggs $327\times220{\mu}m$ in size on cut planes of stems, but not on intact stem parts that had not been topped or wounded. Analyses of major weather data for the experimental areas and weather data for the past 30 years acquired from the Korea Meteorological Administration revealed that fungus gnat dispersion was prevalent under highly humid conditions and in areas with thick and frequent fogging. Among the topping times examined, fungus gnat damage to ginseng was lowest when topping occurred in late May. Among the five different topping methods evaluated on experimental ginseng farms, the cumulative fungus gnat damage to ginseng was low (0.8%) under partial peduncle topping (removal of peduncle with lateral fruit remaining) and removal of only flower buds (0.6%), with fungus gnat control effects of 82% and 86%, respectively, compared to conventional topping (removal of peduncle about 5 cm above its base). No fungus gnat damage to ginseng was observed under the no-topping treatment. These results suggest that partial topping of peduncles, while letting lateral fruits remain, is a potentially environmentally friendly method of controlling the ginseng stem fungus gnat.

Physicochemical properties of Rubus coreanus Miquel were examined. Unripened fruit, ripened fruit and leaf of Rubus coreanus Miquel were used as samples. The contents of water, crude protein, crude fat, crude fiber, dietary fiber, and crude ash were studied. The pH, soluble solid content, acidity and color were also measured. In terms of free sugar composition, concentration of glucose and fructose found in unripened fruit had increased in ripened fruit and sucrose was contained in ripened fruit. The major free sugars of leaf were glucose, fructose and sucrose. Citric acid, succinic acid and fumaric acid were found in all three sample groups, unripened fruit, ripened fruit and leaf. The citric acid showed the highest concentration in the unripened fruit as the concentration of 1.21%. Fifteen types of amino acids were analysed from the unripened and ripened fruit of Rubus coreanus Miquel. The leaf contained methionine in addition to those fifteen type amino acids in fruits. The glutamic acid contents of unripened fruit, ripened fruit and leaf were 411, 246.59 and 898.42 mg%, respectively. Among the minerals studied in this research Rubus coreanus Miquel held high level of potassium. The potassium concentrations of unripened fruit, ripened fruit and leaf were 645.07, 216.53 and 815.78 mg%, respectively.
A reduced NaCl intake for the general population of the world has been recommended to reduce the overall blood pressure level and hence to reduce the overall incidence of cardiovascular disease. A high NaCl diet convincingly contributes to elevated arterial pressure in humans and animal models of hypertension. Among individuals there is considerable variability of blood pressure responsiveness to NaCl intake. In normotensive as well as hypertensive subjects, blood pressure can be judged to be salt sensitivity (SS) when observed to vary directly and substantially with the net intake of NaCl. The prevalence of SS in normotensive adults in the U.S. ranges from 15% to 42% and in hypertensive adults from 28% to 74%. SS is a risk factor for hypertension and may be an important marker in the identification of children for hypertension prevention programs. High NaCl intakes produce expansion of the extracellular fluid volume and thus increase blood pressure. Nonchloride salts of sodium does not expand the extracellular fluid volume and does not alter blood pressure. Blood pressure response to NaCl may be modified by other components of the diet. Low dietary intakes of potassium or calcium augment NaCl-induced increases of blood pressure. Conversely, high dietary intakes of potassium or calcium attenuate NaCl-induced hypertension. A greater intakes of potassium or calcium may prevent or delay the occurrence of hypertension. SS occurs when dietary potassium is even marginally deficient but is dose-dependently suppressed when dietary potassium is increased within its normal range. Orally administered KHCO$_3$, abundant in fruits and vegetates, but not KCl has a calcium-retaining effect which may contributed to its reversal of pressor effect of dietary NaCl. Since nutrients other than NaCl also affect blood pressure levels, a reduced NaCl intake should be only one component of a nutritional strategy to lower blood pressure.
The purpose of this study was to find out the dietary attitudes and behaviors, intake frequencies of food groups, health-related opinions and practices, and sociodemographic characteristics of housewives in Wonju-Gun rural area. Interviewers asked 413 housewives about obove informations and then recorded. The results were as followes : Using the factor analysis processing, 17 questions about dietary attitudes and behaviors were categorized into 5 groups such as fidelity of diet, the healthful dietary attitudes, the eating practices concerning about items and amount, eating speed and the extent of coincidence in food preference within a family. The role of the housewives was a major factor affecting the dietary attitudes and behaviors. Those who work as housewives and farmers concurrently had good dietary practices concerning about items and amount, but they were interested about health-directed dietary attitudes at a significantly lower level. Food frequencies of 9 groups, animal protein food, fruits and vegetables, milk and milk products, small fishes such as anchovy, soybean curd and beans, seaweeds, vegetable oil, frying food, soybean paste were significantly associated with subjects' age, role, and education and income level. Whether or not intake of soybean paste was considered. protein food intake was altered, and the difference between two situations increased much more as age was higher. We noticed that intake of soybean paste improved the status of protein nutrition. Our subjects ate calcium sources and dishes using vegetable oil insufficiently. Those who had much interests for good health, revealed to be an active practitioner in the aspects of healthful dietary attitudes, but fidelity of diet, eating practices concerning about items and amount showed significant association with balanced life style.
The damage rates of peach pyralid moth(Dichocrocis punctiferalis), which damages the chestnut fruits, were investigated annually from 1995 to 2010 according to year, region, and maturity. The damage rate by D. punctiferalis was the highest (34.5%) in 1998 and was the lowest (17.9%) in 2000. The pattern of the damage rate showed a repeating three-year cycle. There was a negative correlation ($-0.6261^*$) between rainfall and damage rate. There was a positive correlation ($0.5826^*$) between temperature and damage rate. The average damage rate of all surveyed regions was 22.2%. Of the surveyed areas, Hapcheon had the highest at 27% and Hamyang had the lowest at 15.0%. The damage rate of chestnut fruit depending on the maturity was 26.1% in an early maturing cultivar (Dantaek), and 19.3% and 21.1% in a late maturing cultivar (Eungi) and a medium maturing cultivar (Chukpa), respectively.
In the present study we first report in Korea the identification and characterization of Fusarium oxysporum isolated from rotten stems and roots of paprika (Capsicum annuum var. grossum) at Masan, Kyungsangnamdo in 2006. The fungal species produced white aerial mycelia accompanying with dark violet pigment on PDA. The optimal temperature and pH for the growth of the species was $25^{\circ}C$ and pH 7, respectively. Microscopic observation of one of isolates of the species shows that its conidiophores are unbranched and monophialides, its microconidia have oval-ellipsoidal shape with no septate and are of $3.0{\sim}11{\times}1.5{\sim}3.5\;{\mu}m$ sizes, its macroconidia are of $15{\sim}20{\times}2.0{\sim}3.5\;{\mu}m$ sizes and have slightly curved or slender shape with $2{\sim}3$ septate. The results of molecular analysis show that the ITS rDNA of F. oxysporum from paprika shares 100% sequence identity with that of known F. oxysporum isolates. The identified species proved it's pathogenicity by causing rotting symptom when it was inoculated on paprika fruits. The growth of F. oxysporum from paprika was suppressed on PDA by agrochemicals such as benomyl, tebuconazole and azoxystrobin. The identified species has the ability of producing extracelluar enzymes that degrade cellobiose and pectin.
To observe trends over time in the consumers' preference for food purchasing, a content analysis of food advertising in Women's Dong-A was conducted with the five-year intervals from 1968 to 1995. Advertisements for food were classified with the types of foods represented, the types of food products sold, and the types of promotional statements. The results of this study can be summarized as follows: 1. The percentages of advertisements for Ingredients &Condiments group; Fats, Sugars & Desserts group; and Beverages group were peaked in the 1970s; advertisements for Protein foods, Dairy products, and Fruits & Vegetables began to increase in early 1980s; and advertisements for Starch & Cereals stabilized over time. 2. The percentages of advertisements for products classified as Fresh, Frozen and Bottled foods increased linearly; and Canned, Dry products (whether ready-to-eat or required reconstitution) decreased. 3. The percentages of promotional statements about General Health Nutrition and Contains specific nutrients were all very high, although they may decrease in recent decade; promotional statements about Minimizes or Eliminates Certain substances increased linearly over time. 4. The advertisements of Consumer-related statement were very high over time. The proportion of statement about Taste was 60.6% of all advertisements.
Elderly with dementia in geriatric hospitals (EDGH) are highly dependent on hospital meals. This study evaluated the foodservices satisfaction and food preference of the EDGH. The survey was conducted on 104 elderly with dementia (21 males and 83 females) in 4 geriatric hospitals in Seoul and Incheon in November, 2016. Data were collected from interviews using a questionnaire that consisted of 6 questions for foodservice satisfaction and 24 questions (10 categories) for food preference. The data were analyzed using SPSS ver. 20.0. The satisfaction with taste, saltiness, texture, and variety in foodservices was good, but the satisfaction with the amount was not, and the reason for leaving food was its large serving size. The subjects preferred soft boiled rice, noodles, porridges, meats, fish, seafood, vegetables, and fruits. Among them, they preferred more janchiguksu, red bean porridge, beef, croaker, oyster, spinach, and banana. Regarding the cooking methods, they preferred soup, grill, and boiling, but not frying. The also preferred Chinese cabbage kimchi, but they did not prefer hard kkakdugi. They did not prefer milk because of diarrhea, but they preferred yogurt. Therefore, to provide a satisfying meal for EDGH, it is necessary to develop a friendly diet considering their food preferences.
This research was carried to investigate the food preference of students, from elementary school, middle school, high school, university and industrial workers on Jinju, Sacheon and Jinyang by age and sex. The results were obtained as follows. In case of rice as the stationary food, plain white boiled rice showed the highest preference among all the groups. Most of groups liked most of one-dish meals such as kimbab, fried rice with kimchi, dumplings and bibimbab, especially the elementary school students and middle school students. On the other hand, high percentage of industrial workers disliked the western food such as pizza, hamburger and sphagetti. Most of subjects liked jajangmun, nangmun and bibimgooksu as noodles. As the side dishes generally they prefer the soup to stew. Male prefer the soup with beef and female prefer soup with vegetables. Stew with kimchi and stew with soybean paste showed high preference among most of groups. Most of broil food showed high preference, and students prefer meat to fish as broil cooking materials especially younger students. As a general they liked soybean sprout, spinach and wild sesame leaf as namul cooking method and they liked korean cabbage kimchi, chonggak kimchi, kackdoogi and dongchimi as kimchi. As a dessert subjects liked most of fruits and they liked yoghurt, fruit juice, milk, sikhae and soda as drinks generally. On the other hand snacks such as cooky, candy, cake, corn, rice cake, sweet potato have the lowest percentage preferance as a dessert, but students from elementary schools showed the highest preferance to sweet such as cooky, cake and candy than any other group. These food preferance results showed some nutritional problems especially young age students. They should eat more green-yellow vegetables, liver food and dried small sardine and they should reduce snacks such as candy and cooky and soda drinks. Therefore it is necessary to conduct nutrition education by parents, teachers and dietician together to improve their food habits and their health.

BACKGROUND/OBJECTIVES: This study aimed to investigate the association of dietary patterns with overweight risk and all-cause mortality in pediatric cancer patients. SUBJECTS/METHODS: Prospective cohort study was undertaken; 83 cancer patients admitted to the pediatric cancer ward at a university hospital in Seoul were included and followed for obesity and death over 24 months. Food consumption data were collected from patients using validated meal order sheets for breakfast, lunch, and dinner at the pediatric cancer ward over 3 days. Using principal component analysis, three dietary patterns were derived from 29 food groups. RESULTS: Eighteen deaths occurred among the patient cohort during the follow-up period. The "spicy & fried meat and fish" dietary pattern was positively associated with overweight risk at both baseline [odds ratio (OR) = 4.396, 95% confidence interval (CI) = 1.111-17.385, P for trend = 0.023] and after 6 months (OR = 4.088, 95% CI = 1.122-14.896, P for trend = 0.025) as well as all-cause mortality (hazard ratios = 5.124, 95% CI = 1.080-24.320, P for trend = 0.042), when comparing the highest and lowest tertiles after adjusting for covariates. The "fish, egg, meat, and fruits & vegetables" dietary pattern was associated with lower overweight risk after 24 months (OR = 0.157, 95% CI = 0.046-0.982, P for trend = 0.084). CONCLUSION: The results imply that dietary patterns might be associated with weight gain and premature death among pediatric cancer patients.
