  • Many researches for effects of different flow configurations on performance of Proton Exchange Membrane Fuel Cell have extensively been done but the effects of flow direction at the same flow channel shape should be considered for optimal operation of fuel cell as well. In this paper a numerical computational methode for simulating entire reactive flow fields including anode and cathode flow has been developed and the effects of different flow direction at parallel flow was studied. Pressure drop along the flow channel and density distribution of reactant and products and water transport, ion conductivity across the membrane and I-V performance are compared in terms of flow directions(co-flow or counter-flow) using above numerical simulation method. The results show that the performance under counter-flow condition is superior to that under co-flow condition due to higher reactant and water transport resulting to higher ion conductivity of membrane.

  • The HANARO, a multi-purpose research reactor of 30 MWth open-tank-in-pool type, has been under normal operation since its initial criticality In February, 1995. Many experiments should be safely performed to activate the utilization of the HANARO. A flow simulation facility is being developed for the endurance test of reactivity control units for extended life times and the verification of structural integrity of those experimental facilities prior to loading in the HANARO. This test facility is composed of three major parts; a half-core structure assembly, flow circulation system and support system. The flow circulation system is composed of a circulation pump, a core flow pipe, a core bypass flow pipe and instruments. The system is to be filled with de-mineralized water and the flow should be met the design flow to simulate similar flow characteristics in the core channel of the half-core test facility to the HANARO. This paper, therefore, describes an analytical analysis to study the flow behavior of the system. The computational flow analysis has been performed for the verification of system pressure variation through the three-dimensional analysis program with standard k-$\epsilon$ turbulence model and for the verification of the structural piping integrity through the finite element method. The results of the analysis are satisfied the design requirements and structural piping integrity of flow circulation system.

  • Experimental investigations were conducted for the internal flows of the axial flow stator and diagonal flow rotor. Corner separation near the hub surface and the suction surface of stator blade are mainly focused on. For the design flow rate, the values of the axial velocity and the total pressure at stator outlet decrease between near the suction surface and near the hub surface by the influence of corner wall. For the flow rate of 80-90% of the design flow rate, the corner separation of the stator between the suction surface and the hub surface is observed, which becomes widely spread for 80% of the design flow rate. At rotor outlet for 81% of the design flow rate, the low axial velocity region grows between near the suction surface of rotor and the casing surface because of the tip leakage flow of the rotor.

  • Three-dimensional flow within a film-cooling hole, which is normally oriented to the main flow, has been measured by using a straight five-hole probe for the blowing ratios of 1.0 and 2.0. The length-to-diameter ratio of the injection hole is fixed to be 1.0 throughout the whole experiments. The result shows that the secondary flow within the hole is strongly affected by the main flow and flow separation at the hole inlet. The higher blowing ratio provides less influence of the main flow on the injectant flow. The three-dimensional flow at the hole exit is considerably altered due to the strong interaction between the injectant and main flow. The aerodynamic loss produced inside the injection hole is mainly attributed to the inlet flow separation.

  • Venturi meter is frequently used in feed water flow control system in a nuclear power plant. Its accurate measurement plays a vital role in the safe operation of the plant. This paper firstly investigates the influence of the length of each section of pipeline, the throat inner diameter of Venturi and the flow characteristics in a single-phase flow on the accuracy of Venturi measurement by numerical calculation. Then the flow and the accuracy are discussed in a multi-phase flow. Numerical results show that the geometrical parameters and the characteristics of complex turbulent flow in the single-phase flow have little impact on the accuracy of Venturi flow rate measurement. In the multi-phase flow, the calculated flow rate of Venturi deviated from the actual flow rate and this deviation value is closely related to the amount of steam in the pipeline and increases sharply with the increase of the amount of steam. The over-reading of Venturi flow rate is present.

  • This study analyzed performance changes by an inner flow path of impeller groove for side channel type ring blower using CFD. Two models have the same side channel and clearance while one has an inner flow path and the other doesn't. To analyze the performance change of a ring blower, overall performance and local flow field were analyzed. For the overall performance, pressure increase and impeller torque were checked under the design flow condition. Under the design flow condition, pressure increase was greater for the model with the inner flow path. The model with the inner flow path showed improved efficiency because the area subject to torque decreased due to the creation of inner flow path. To analyze local flow field, a section was created from the representative location of each impeller groove toward the direction of radius. Inner channel pressure distribution depending on the rotation direction shows that the model with the inner flow path has pressure equilibrium of working fluid through the inner flow path. Velocity distribution of inside impeller groove shows that flow field was coupled and appeared to form an inner wall where the flow field was stabilized.

  • Performance and flow characteristics of a small forward swept propeller fan for home refrigerators are studied experimentally. An unusual discontinuity is observed in the performance curve of the fan. Mean flow fields measured with as-hole Pitot probe reveal that the flow is axial at the high flow rate and radial at the low flow rate. The flow structure changes abruptly across the discontinuity. Unsteady flow measurements with a set of hot-wire probes indicate that near the discontinuity a single-cell stall rotates at 40% speed of the fan speed, while away from the discontinuity the flow shows periodic variation corresponding to the blade passage frequency. Phase-lock averaged flow fields measured with a triple-sensor hot-wire probe show that there appears radially inward flow over the pressure side of the blade and the outward passage flow over the tip.

  • In order to make the way to determine the instream flow more practically, we have investigated many case studies and reviewed reports and papers. To validate instream flow level suggested by the case studies, DAWAST and HEC-RAS model were applied to the Gap-stream watershed in Daejeon city. Flow-duration analysis was performed both with the stream flow data gauged in the Indong, Boksu, and Hoeduck stations, and with the stream flow data estimated by the DAWAST model and the specific discharge method. Instream flow was determined among the flow-duration analysis, DAWAST, HEC-RAS model and mass balance approach. It was satisfied with various factors such as target water quality, water depth for eco-system and resorts, water surface width, flow velocity for landscape in dry season. The study suggested that the mean low flow could be replaced into the instream flow for the preliminary study because the instream flow considering ecosystem, landscape, water-friendly environment and water quality was generally close to the mean low flow.

  • The cause of flow mark defect is known as non-uniform temperature of mold surface when the flow front meets the cold cavity. The exact definition and classification of Flow mark is not clear because the mechanism of flow mark is not figured out till now. Any injection molding analysis software can not predict the flow mark phenomena. To solve weldline and flow mark defects, the gate thickness is reduced to increase the melt front velocity and the melt front velocity of the flow mark area is increased from 82.3mm/s to 104.7mm/s. In addition, the bulk temperature of the flow mark area is increased from $178.3^{\circ}C$to $215.2^{\circ}C$ by adding a cold slug well. The flow mark phenomena can be greatly reduced by increasing the flow front velocity and elevating the bulk temperature.

  • A sequence of visually experimental observations was conducted to investigate the flow boiling and two-phase flow in a coiled tube. Different boiling modes and bubble dynamical evolutions were identified for better recognizing the phenomena and understanding the two-phase flow evolution and heat transfer mechanisms. The dissolved gases and remained vapor would serve as foreign nucleation sites, and together with the effect of buoyancy, centrifugal force and liquid flow, these also induce very different flow boiling nucleation, boiling modes, bubble dynamical behavior, and further the boiling heat transfer performance. Bubbly flow, plug flow, slug flow, stratified/wavy flow and annular flow were observed during the boiling process in the coiled tube. Particularly the effects of flow reconstructing and thermal non-equilibrium release in the bends were noted and discussed with the physical understanding. Coupled with the effects of the buoyancy, centrifugal force and inertia or momentum ratio of the two fluids, the flow reconstructing and thermal non-equilibrium release effects have critical importance for flow pattern in the bends and flow evolution in next straight sections.
