In this study, it is considered how housing paradigm for the elderly has been changed from traditional societies to the current times in terms of welfare. Those changes could be necessary for establishing housing policies and implementing them concerning the characteristics of the elderly and their predictable problems related to welfare. It is intended that diverse housing issues for the elderly in relation to welfare are investigated. The welfare approach is appropriate for the consideration of elderly housing as one of the individual goals for the welfare. This paper aims to analyze the changes in the living arrangements of the elderly in Chejoo-do for the elderly housing supply by using census data. The conclusions are as follows; The rate of living alone and living with spouse only of the elderly have been increasing. The trend in county was higher than that in city. Living alone rate of the elderly of Chejoo-do was higher than that of Korean average. Even in the oldest old, living alone rate has been increasing in Chejoo-do. It is a unique phenomenon in Korea and similar with U.S. In Chejoo-do, it is strongly required to evolve elderly housing by universal design for living alone elderly in county as well as for living alone elderly in city.
Aging is accompanied with numerous transitions in life, and residential environment becomes a pivotal part of the elderly's lives. Physically supportive housing linked with services emerges in midst of the reality that retrofitting housing with special features has been seriously underfunded. The purpose of this study was to examine the residential satisfaction of the elderly in two types of independent living arrangements specially designed for the elderly. The indices of residential supportiveness were developed, and the questionnaire survey was adopted for data collection. Two hundred eighty residents living in two different kinds of senior housing participated in the survey, and all the collected responses were used for data analysis. The finding showed that almost all of the elderly positively assessed their senior living. That is, the statistical analysis illustrated that satisfaction indices of senior living significantly and positively contributed the satisfaction with overall residential environment. Satisfaction with physical environment was the only strong predictor in explaining current residential satisfaction of the elderly in senior rental housing, and accounted for a small proportion of the variance in the dependent variable. Since affordability was the biggest concern among residents in senior housing, it was of significance that long-term housing affordability was ensured and reduction in service cost by utilizing economies of scale was pursued.
The purpose of this study is to explore the formation process of housing notion for later life of the elderly which is based on one's lifetime housing experiences. Qualitative data was collected through in-depth interviews with 6 highincome, highly educated aged women, who could select their housing and move voluntarily in old age and explain their housing experiences logically. The findings of this study showed that housing notion for later life was formed through a complex process of individual personality, lifestyle, housing experiences, housing values, housing market and period background as well as socio-demographic characteristics. This qualitative study has a significance as a holistic approach to reveal the lifelong experience of elderly individuals which had not been to deal in the quantitative research of housing for the elderly in the meantime.
A rapid increase of the elderly population and changes in the social structure, family type and lifestyle bring us to the moment for considering the various aspects of supporting the elderly including the elderly housing facilities. Traditionally it is considered as a merit for a son to support parents in his own house. Hut recently the elderly increasingly want to live independently without support from their children. To satisfy these needs, new housing facilities for the elderly were developed by private non-profit foundations. A number of outstanding housing facilities for the elderly have been built in the last five years. These facilities show significant progress in housing for the elderly. Unfortunately, there u e no standard design checklists or guidelines for housing for the elderly available in Korea. The housing facilities were built based on foreign design guidelines or architect's experience. This research aims to develop an affordable design checklist that can meet the needs of the Korean elderly lifestyle. This study evaluated the senior residential facilities using Woo's checklist which consolidated the guidelines available here and abroad. As the result of this study, we presented the checklist subject in upper group $25\%, middle group, lower group $25\% distribution and 6, 5, 4, categories in order to importance. When designing the future senior residential facilities, a constraint can be made based on the scope and financial factors of the facility first and the determine how extensive the application of the checklist should be.
As an aging population has increased vastly and nuclear families have been a dominating family type in modern Korean society, the numbers of the elderly who suffer Empty Nest Syndrome and LID (Loss Isolation Depression) syndrome have been accelerated. These syndromes involve psychological instability, melancholy, and lethargy. To make the elderly get out of this phenomenon and live actively, the scheme of converting their existing house into shared housing was set as a hypothetical solution in this study. This study sets out to find out responses of the elderly to alter their own house's function in housing improvement area. A Small Workshop Panel method was used and the elderly aged 55 years upwards took part and they own a detached house in a housing improvement area that is relatively large for the elderly or the elderly couple to live alone. Through the workshop, problems that the elderly have been experiencing within their houses were looked into and responses of the elderly on altering their house to shared housing by introducing developed schematic plans. Although, the first response was negative, positive responses from the house owners were carried out when a visual support i.e. developed shared housing plan was provided. The positive response was based on the fact that subsidies from the government on house renovation and tenants matching programs are supported as shared housing could provide home owners economical support with rents and help them to feel less lonely. This is a way of relieving the elderly from being neglected and supporting them to live and age actively in their later lives. Furthermore, by providing a visual media to the elder residents in housing improvement area, their greater understandings on the development and addressing their opinions were possible. Therefore, more tools that promote elder residents' participation are needed for future housing improvement projects and an aging society.
The demand of elderly care facilities due to aging population has been increased and the trend of developed countries implies the necessity of innovate approach for elderly care in Korea. The purpose of this research is to evaluate the flexible elderly housing alternative which has been introduced showing adaptability and small scale. This elderly housing alternative was designed to fulfill the condition of residential facilities for various aging phases from the independent elderly to dependent elderly. The workshop method was used for pre-evaluation of the flexible elderly housing alternative from the viewpoint of administrators, care givers and the elderly. The pre-evaluation is to estimate the facility before finalizing the design so that it facilitates more effective and suitable plan by reducing the trial and error beforehand, unlike the post-evaluation. Major responses of plans were positive and the needs for improvement about some concerns were revealed. Thus, relevant aspects of architectural drawings were amended according to workshop participants' needs and features that require to be reflected during further planning procedures were also improved. The result of this research will develop the flexible elderly housing alternative and contribute to foster environment for the elderly as well.
