A Study on the Characteristics of Low-Level Wind Shear at Jeju International Airport from Go-Around Flight Perspective (항공기 복행사례를 통한 제주국제공항 저층 윈드시어의 특징 연구)

  • Low level wind shear, which often occurs at Jeju International Airport, is a phenomenon that occurs when the topological location and topographical characteristics of Jeju Island are combined with weather characteristics. Low level wind shears, which are caused by rapid changes in wind direction and wind speed, pose a threat to aircraft safety and also cause abnormal situations, such as aircraft go-around, diversion, and cancellation. Many meteorological studies have been conducted on weather patterns, occurrence periods and frequency of low level wind shears. However, researches related to aircraft operations are limited where here we study the similarities and differences between strong southwest winds and bidirectional tailwind type low level wind shears based on aircraft go-around cases at Jeju International Airport. The results are expected to be used to enhance safety when operating to Jeju International Airport, which includes pilot training that reflects the characteristics generated by wind changes, pilot prior notification, providing pilots with latest trends, and increasing extra fuel.

  • "Chimumchang" seems to be a kind eczema. The cause and symptom of eczema is similar to that of chimumchang. so, I investigated the literatures of oriental medicin and recent medicine. The results are summarized as follows. 1. Chimumchang seems to be a kind of eczema. Allergic contact dermatitis, atopic dermatitis, seborrheic dermatits, neurodermatitis, nummular dermatitis, xerotic eczema and so on are similar to chimumchang on cause & symptom. 2. The cause of chimumchang are summer vital energy excess(夏脈太過), sehwa excess(歲火太過), herat meridian wind-heat(心經風熱), heart fire(心火), wind taken spleen dampnees(脾濕受風), and so on. The cause of eczema are contact of external agent, immunological problem, heridity, infection, abnormalities of sebaceous glands, neurologic dysfuction, and so on. 3. The symptoms of chimumchang have been described to the three pattern on literature of oriental medicine until now. 1) scratching slightly, It has exudation, and combination. 2) Vital energy on skin is irritable by psychological problem. At the acute stage the patient is complain of itching & pain, and gradually the exudation expands in whole body. 3) early peorid it's size is very small, and at first the patient is complain of itching, later complain of pain. The exudation change to ulcer and expands in the whole body. 4. In the investigation of prescription(Total: 34, Oral medicine: 4, Ointment: 30), the most frequently used oral medicine is sungmatang(4 times), and the most frequently used ointment are kohosan, korvunsan and kegwanhyuldobang.

Simulation Study of Solar Wind Interaction with Lunar Magnetic Fields

  • Particle-in-cell simulations were performed to understand the interaction of the solar wind with localized magnetic fields on the sunlit surface of the Moon. The results indicated a mini-magnetosphere was formed which had a thin magnetopause with the thickness of the electron skin depth. It was also found that the solar wind penetrated into the cavity of the magnetosphere intermittently rather than in a steady manner. The solar wind that moved around the magnetosphere was observed to hit the surface of the Moon, implying that it may be the cause of the lunar swirl formation on the surface.

  • When constructing a high-speed railroad, the reduction of the distance between track centers and the width of track bed will save the construction cost. However the shortening the distance between track centers may cause the stability problems due to higher wind pressure. Therefore the extensive technical review and aerodynamical study should be performed to determine the adequate distance between track centers. In this study, the impact that the increase in wind pressure due to the change of aerodynamic phenomena with the change of the distance between track centers may have on two trains passing by each other was predicted, and the stability of train operation was analyzed in order to review the distance between track centers suitable to Honam HSR trains. We conducted the parametric study of the effects of train wind on the running stability.

Full-scale experiments of cantilever traffic signal structures

  • Wind-induced vibrations of mast arms of cantilever traffic signal structures can lead to fatigue failure. Two such structures were instrumented each with a sonic anemometer and a camera that records the motions of the tip of the arm. It was observed throughout this experiment that large amplitude vertical vibrations of mast arms with signals with backplates occur for the most part at low wind speed ranges, between 2 to 7 m/s, and as the wind speed increases the amplitude of the vertical vibrations decreases. The results of these experiments contradict the generally accepted belief that vortex shedding does not cause significant vibrations of mast arms that could lead to fatigue failure, which have been attributed to galloping in the past. Two damping devices were tested with mixed results.

  • This paper proposes the adaptive relaying algorithm of protective devices applied in the neighboring distribution feeders for reliable and efficient operations of a wind farm interconnected with distribution networks by dedicated lines. Generally, it would be highly possible that the wind turbine generators are influenced by abnormal grid conditions such as disturbances occurring in the neighboring distribution feeders as well as the dedicated power line. The delayed operation time of protective devices for satisfying the coordination might overly expose the interconnected wind turbine generators to the fault and cause damage to them. In order to reduce the damages on the interconnected wind farm about the faults happening in distribution networks, this paper describes the proper delayed operation time of protective relay.

  • The 'chain reaction' effect of the interaction between wind pressure and windborne debris is likely to be a major cause of damage to residential buildings during severe wind events. The current paper (Part II) concerns the quantification of such pressure-debris interaction in an advanced vulnerability model that integrates the debris risk model developed in Part I and a component-based wind-pressure damage model. This vulnerability model may be applied to predict the cumulative wind damage during the passage of particular hurricanes, to estimate annual hurricane losses, or to conduct system reliability analysis for residential developments, with the effect of windborne debris fully considered.

  • Wind power is a type of clean energy source which does not produce carbon dioxide. The wind turbine industry is considered as a major growth industry in many countries. The main cause of wind turbine failure arises in the wind turbine gearbox, and the main type of damage occurs in the bearings and gears. Therefore, predictions of gear and bearing damage are very important to ensure the reliability of the wind turbine reducers used in these systems. In this research, in order to optimize the wind turbine reducer, a series of simulations and redesigns was done using the tool RomaxDesigner. The RomaxDesigner model was used to analyze the bearing life of the duty cycle for a 5 MW wind-turbine pitch drive and to calculate the load in operating states. The reducer was designed to satisfy the life requirement by analyzing bearing damage and calculating the stress values of the main parts of the reducer.

  • In August 2012, during the passage of the typhoon Haikui (1211), large amplitude vibrations were observed on long hangers of the Xihoumen suspension Bridge, which destroyed a few viscoelastic dampers originally installed to connect a pair of hanger ropes transversely. The purpose of this study is to identify the cause of vibration and to develop countermeasures against vibration. Field measurements have been conducted in order to correlate the wind and vibration characteristics of hangers. Furthermore, a replica aeroelastic model of prototype hangers consisting of four parallel ropes was used to study the aeroelastic behavior of hanger ropes and to examine the effect of the rigid spacers on vibration mitigation. It is shown that the downstream hanger rope experiences the most violent elliptical vibration for certain wind direction, and the vibration is mainly attributed to wake interference of parallel hanger ropes. Based on wind tunnel tests and field validation, it is confirmed that four rigid spacers placed vertically at equal intervals are sufficient to suppress the wake-induced vibrations. Since the deployment of spacers on hangers, server hanger vibrations and clash of hanger ropes are never observed.

The effects of grooves on wind characteristics of tall cylinder buildings

  • For most full-scale tall buildings the Reynolds number of a flow field around a circular cylinder under strong wind is usually greater than $2{\times}10^7$, which is difficult to achieve in most wind tunnel tests. To explore the wind characteristics of tall cylindrical buildings with equidirectional grooves from subcritical to transcritical flow ($6.6{\times}10^4{\leq}Re{\leq}3.3{\times}10^5$ and $9.9{\times}10^6{\leq}Re{\leq}7.2{\times}10^7$), wind tunnel tests and full-scale large eddy simulations were carried out. The results showed that the rectangular-grooves narrow the wake width due to the downstream movement of the separation point and the deeper grooves cause smaller mean and fluctuating pressure while the peak pressure is little affected. Furthermore, the grooves lead to lower frequency of vortex shedding but the Strouhal number remains at the range from 0.15 to 0.35. The drag coefficient of the cylinders with grooves was found to be 2~3 times as large as that of smooth cylinders.
