Entrepreneurs' Competencies and Business Performance: A Meta-Analysis (창업가의 역량이 기업성과에 미치는 영향에 대한 메타분석)

  • The purpose of this study is to provide a theoretical basis for future studies by systematically integrating existing empirical studies that examine the relationship between the entrepreneurs' competencies and business performance. As the results of empirical studies examining the relationship between the entrepreneurs' competencies and business performance are mixed, this study tries to derive different results from individual studies through meta-analysis into standardized statistics(effect sizes). To accomplish the purpose, this study developed hypotheses about the positive effects of the entrepreneurial competencies including opportunity recognition competency, managerial competency, technical-functional competency, strategic competency, and relationship competencies on the business performance through theoretical reviews of the literature. Also, this study conducted meta-analysis with 15 sample data using open source based statistical program 'R'. The results of this study are as follows. The opportunity recognition competency, managerial competency, technical-functional competency, strategic competency, and relationship competency were found to significantly affect financial business performance. Also, each of the factors had a moderate effect size on the performance. Among these competencies, the most effective factor was the strategic competency, followed by the opportunity recognition competency, technical-functional competency, and relationship competency. There is still no study using meta-analysis on the relationship between the entrepreneurs' competencies and business performance in South Korea. Therefore, the results of this study are expected to provide implications for developing the theoretical basis of future studies.

A model experiment on the underwater shape of deepsea bottom trawl net (심해 저층트롤망의 수중형상에 관한 모형실험)

  • A model experiment using circulation water channel was carried out to investigate the dynamic characteristics of bottom trawl net which can be used in sea mount of North Pacific. Hydrodynamic resistance and shape variation according to the flow velocity and angle of hand rope transformation for net were measured, and experimental value was analyzed as the value of full-scale bottom trawl net. The results summarized are as follows; At the $30^{\circ}$ of angle of hand rope to net, hydrodynamic resistance varied from 0.5kgf to 2.68kgf as the flow velocity increased between 0.31m/s and 0.92m/s, and formula of hydrodynamic resistance for the model net was $F_m=3.04\;{\cdot}\;{\upsilon}^{1.53}$. At the fixed angle of hand rope, Net height was low and Net width was high according to the increase of flow velocity, and in addition, vertical opening was low and Net width was high by the increase of angle of hand rope at the fixed flow velocity. At the $30^{\circ}$ of angle of hand rope to net, net opening area was $0.214m^2$ as flow velocity was 0.61m/s, and formula of net opening area for the model net was $S_m=-0.22{\upsilon}+0.35$. At the $30^{\circ}$ of angle of hand rope to net, catch efficiency seemed to be highest as $0.319m^3/s$ of filtering volume at the 0.76m/s(51kt's) of flow velocity. Shape variation of net showed the gradual laminar transform for the variation of flow velocity but there needed some improvements due to the occurrence of shortening at the ahead of wing net.

Geochemical Characteristics of the Jurassic Chunyang Granites in Northeastern Part of the Yeongnam Massif (영남육괴에 분포하는 쥐라기 춘양화강암의 지화학적 특성)

  • The geochemical results of the Chunyang granites located in the northeastern part of the Yeongnam Massif, indicate that these rocks have characteristics of calc-alkaline series in the sub-alkaline field, I-type and peraluminous. Most of the geochemical features in major and trace elements show systematic trends, which are similar to differentiation trends of the general Jurassic granitoids in South Korea. The Chunyang granite is largely enriched in mobile LILE (Sr, K, Rb and Ba) relatively immobile HFSE. They show LREE enriched patterns [$(La/Lu)_{CN}=41.8-73.2$] with a slightly negative Eu anomaly [$(Eu/Eu^*)_{CN}=0.89-1.10$]. There are no meaningful correlations in major and trace elements between the Chunyang granites and the Buseok plutonic rock which is the main unit of the Yeongju batholith. This result may suggest that these two plutonic rocks be not derived from the same parent magma. Tectonic discrimination diagrams indicate that the Chunyang granite was formed in volcanic arc environments. These geochemical characteristics results suggest that the Chunyang granite must have been generated at the active continental margin during the subduction of the Jurassic proto-Pacific plate.

The Impact of Regulatory Approaches on Entrepreneurship and Iinnovation: In the Context of the Growth of Entrepreneurship in South Korea (규제방식이 창업기업의 진입 및 혁신에 미치는 영향: 한국 사례를 중심으로)

  • This paper studies the impact of regulatory approaches on innovation and entrepreneurship. As technological progress and environmental changes avail new business opportunities to innovative startups, many governments find it difficult to regulate new and unprecedented businesses promoted by the innovative firms. In order to provide academic and practitional implications on the regulatory design with which to support innovation and entrepreneurship, this paper aims to review classical theories on the demand and supply of regulation as well as empirical research on the impact of regulation on market entry and incentives for innovation. Based on the findings, this paper discusses the recent controversies around the regulatory approaches on new businesses pursued by startups, which are as known as the "positive regulatory approach" vs. "negative regulatory approaches" among practitioners and policy makers in Korea. This paper claims that the Korean context provides an useful opportunity to investigate how the ongoing transition of the once "fast follower" economy into a pacesetter one changes the nature of businesses pursued by firms, investors, and related market players and, accordingly, calls for the changes in the way the government intervenes in markets to regulate businesses of firms. By doing so, this paper sheds light on the role of the government in establishing an entrepreneurial ecosystem where innovative ideas of startups can be tested and nurtured.

Emission Characteristics of HFC-23 (CHF3)/HCFC-22 (CHClF2) between Different Air Masses in Northeastern Asia (동북아시아 지역에서의 공기괴별 HFC-23/HCFC-22의 배출특성)

  • HCFC-22 (chlorodifluoromethane, $CHClF_2$), one of the major components in various refrigeration, is emitted mostly from developing countries, as its consumption is not limited until 2013 by the Montreal Protocol. In addition, HFC-23 (trifluoromethane, $CHF_3$), a by-product in the manufacture of HCFC-22, is also a powerful greenhouse gas. Here, we discuss the regional emission characteristics of these compounds based on high-frequency in-situ measurements using the "Medusa" GC-MS system. HCFC-22 and HFC-23 baseline concentrations measured at Gosan (Jeju Island, Korea) from November 2007 to December 2008 increased by 1.8 ppt/yr and 0.6 ppt/yr, respectively. Pollution events of these compounds were observed, very frequently (e.g., ~2~3 times) at Gosan than baseline levels. All the measurement data were divided into four groups by simultaneously considering the ratio (HFC-23/HCFC-22) and concentration (HCFC-22) at Trinidad Head (TH, California, USA). The residence time of trajectories were then analyzed in each of the four groups. The results exhibited the existence of a strong correlation with air mass origin for each group: 1) Air masses originating from Siberia in the north and from the Pacific in the south had ratios of 0.08~0.12 and concentrations of 196.9~254.3 ppt which is highly comparable to background air at TH. 2) Air masses passing over the Southern China exhibited similar ratios but higher HCFC-22 concentrations. 3) Air masses passing over the Northern China had ratios of 0.12~0.21. 4) Air masses passing over Korea and/or Japan had ratios of 0.01~0.08. Our results suggest that the HFC-23/HCFC-22 ratio can be used as a good indicator for the assessment of the pollution with Chinese origin. We also confirmed differences in air masses traveling over Northern and Southern China, most likely due to differences in air mass travelling speed over these regions before arriving at Gosan. This signature may be treated as one of the critical components in identifying the emission sources from different parts of China.

Studies on the Effect of Picolines on the Stereochemistry of Lanthanide(III) Nitrate Coordination Compounds of 4[N-Furfural)amino]antipyrine Semicarbazone and Antibacterial Activities (4[N-Furfural)amino]antipyrine Semicarbazone의 질산 란탄(III) 배위화합물의 입체화학에 미치는 Picolines의 영향과 항박테리아 활성)

  • The effect of ${\alpha}$-, ${\beta}$- and ${\gamma}$-picolines on the stereochemistry of the coordination compounds of lanthanide(III) nitrates derived from 4[N-(furfural)amino]antipyrine semicarbazone (FFAAPS) has been studied. The general composition of the present coordination compounds is [Ln(FFAAPS)$(NO_3)_3$Pic] (Ln=La, Pr, Nd, Sm, Gd, Tb, Dy or Ho and Pic=${\alpha}$-, ${\beta}$- or ${\gamma}$-picolines). All these coordination compounds have been characterized by elemental analyses, molecular weight, molar conductance, magnetic susceptibility, infrared and electronic spectra. The infrared studies suggest that the FFAAPS behaves as a neutral tridentate ligand with N, N, O donor while ${\alpha}$-, ${\beta}$- or ${\gamma}$-picoline is coordinated to the lanthanide(III) ions via heterocyclic N-atom. Nitrates are bicovalently bonded in these compounds. From the electronic spectral data, nephelauxetic effect (${\beta}$), covalence factor ($b^{1/2}$), Sinha parameter (${\delta}%$) and the covalence angular overlap parameter (${\eta}$) have been calculated. Thermal stabilities of these complexes have been studied by thermogravimetric analysis. The coordination number of lanthanide(III) ions in the present compound is found to be ten. The antibacterial studies screening of the primary ligand FFAAPS and the complexes showed that the present complexes have moderate antibacterial activities.

Comparison between TOMS and OMI-derived Tropospheric Ozone (TOMS와 OMI 자료를 이용하여 산출된 대류권 오존 비교 분석)

  • This study compared between tropospheric column ozone by applying the SAM method to TOMS and OMI data for northern summer. Tropospheric ozone from the SAM represents a peak over the tropical Atlantic, where it is related with biomass burning. This feature is also seen in the distribution of the model and CO. Additionally, enhancement of the SAM ozone over the Middle East, and South and North America agrees well with the model and CO distribution. However, the SAM results show more ozone than the model results over the northern hemisphere, especially the ocean (e.g. the North Pacific and the North Atlantic). The tropospheric ozone distribution from OMI data shows more ozone than that from TOMS data. This can be caused by different viewing angle, sampling frequency, and a-priori ozone profiles between OMI and TOMS. The correlation between the SAM tropospheric ozone and CO is better than that between the model and CO in the tropics. However, that correlation is reversed in the mid-latitude.

A Proposal Based on the Analysis of Each Party Election Pledge Related to Korean migrant workers (한국 이주노동자에 대한 각 정당 선거공약 분석과 제언)

  • The inflow of Labor Migrants has been grown up to 600,000 people until now with the adoption of Employment Permit System (EPS) in 2004 until now. However the institutional support lack to ensure their rights and improve their conditions. This is because of their consideration ad temporary labors in South Korean society and labor forces rather than the objects of integration. As a result, the legal status and rights of migrant workers are criticized for their utilization rather than human rights, and human rights protection is insufficient. To this context, this paper analyzed the 19th presidential election pledge of the four political parties (Democratic Party, the Liberty Korea Party, Bareun Party and Justice Party) the majority of the Korean National Assembly, and predicted how the policies of migrant workers would evolve. The study found that there were two political parties that did not mention policies for migrant workers, and the remaining two parties also maintained their current policies. This is probably the biggest reason to recognize migrant workers as temporary residents. However, they should also be aware of the fact, that migrant workers are the members of the Korean society and are the owners of human rights that should be guaranteed, and should consider the policy directions to live with them.

Evidence for Hydrothermal Plume in Manus Basin, SW Pacific: Distribution of Transparency and Hydrogen Sulfide (남서태평양 마누스분지 해역의 열수 plume 증거: 투명도 및 황화수소 분포)

  • To understand and investigate chemical characteristics of thermal environment in the southwestern Paciflc, we have measured hydrological and chemical parameters such as temperature, salinity, transparency, pH, nutrients and hydrogen sulfide (H$_2$S). Samples were collected with CTD-casting at 12 station, in Manus Basin including PACMANUS, DESMOS and Susu Knolls, Hydrothermal systems consist of circulation zones where seawater interacts with rock, thereby changing chemical and physical characteristics of both the seawater and the rock. The altered seawater, called hydrothermal fluid, is injected back into the ocean from the hydrothermal vent fields and forms hydrothermal plumes. Consequently, we detected hydrothermal plume with transparency and sulfide anomalies at PACMANUS and Susu Knolls. Sulfide, as geochemical tracer of hydrothermal plume, ranged 0-3.31 ${\mu}$M, and averaged 0.63 ${\mu}$M in the study area. The height, flux and activity of the plume are affected by circulations in the deep water and the spread of plume follows along the isopycnal surface. Therefore the observed H$_2$S anomaly can provide important clue for the source location and it appears that the targestsource in the PACMANUS is aligned in the north-south direction.

Phylogenetic diversity of bacterial community associated with the tropical marine sponges, Cinachyrella sp. and Plakortis sp. (열대 해양 해면 Cinachyrella sp.와 Plakortis sp.의 공생세균 군집의 계통학적 다양성)

  • The bacterial community structures of two marine sponges, Cinachyrella sp. and Plakortis sp., collected from Chuuk in the South Pacific in February 2012 were analyzed by PCR-DGGE (Denaturing Gradient Gel Electrophoresis) fingerprinting. After isolation of the total genomic DNAs from the sponges, the V3 regions of the 16S rRNA genes were amplified and subjected to DGGE profiling. The two species of sponges displayed different DGGE band patterns. The sequences derived from the DGGE bands revealed 85-100% similarities to known bacterial species in the public database. The bacterial community of Cinachyrella sp. was composed of 6 classes: Actinobacteria, Bacteroidetes, Chloroflexi, and Proteobacteria (Alpha-, Gamma-, Delta-). The bacterial community of Plakortis sp. included 7 classes: Actinobacteria, Chloroflexi, Firmicutes, Spirochaetes, and Proteobacteria (Alpha-, Gamma-, Delta-). Though Actinobacteria, Chloroflexi and Proteobacteria were commonly found in both sponges, the predominant bacterial communities differed between the two. Namely, the predominant bacterial groups in Cinachyrella sp. and Plakortis sp. were Proteobacteria and Chloroflexi, respectively. The sponge-associated bacteria are sponge host-specific, as each of the tested sponges from the same geographical location had different predominant bacterial diversity.
