  • A laterally-averaged X-Z numerical model with transformed coordinates is developed to analyze the salinity dispersion in estuaries. Gravitational term, salinity variations with respect to the water depth. and re-evaluation of , salinity boundary condition are examined. Especially. the improvements in stability and accuracy of the numerical algorithm are made by adopting the fractional step method for the dispersion term of the governing equation. The model being applied to the Keum River Esturary, physical and numerical properties of Manning's n and dispersion coefficients are analyzed. Salinity intrusion into the river, influence of upstream river inflows, and salinity distribution for spring/neap tide are also examined.

  • The travel time of a flood through a river reach can be estimated by dividing the river length by the mean velocity with which the flood passes downstream. It is closely related to storage constant for the watershed routing of a flood. There are so many empirical formulas available for the estimation of travel time but the results computed generally show great different depending on individual formulas. In the present study, the mean velocity data computed in the process of water surface profile computation for a probability flood through more than 100 different river reaches were collected along with the mean river bed slope of each river reach. And then, a regression analysis is made between the mean river bed slope and the mean velocity, which showed a wide scatter along the mean regression curve, which appears to be due to the different in the magnitude of probability rainfall and size of watershed area. Therefore, methods have been developed to remove the effect of these factors and generalized empirical equation is proposed to relate the mean velocity to mean river bed slope of a reach. Hence, if the mean river bed slope of a river reach is estimated from the longitudinal river profile, the mean velocity can be computed by the generalized equation along with the probability rainfall and watershed area of the river reach under consideration, which leads to the estimation of travel time through a river reach.

  • In this study, an implicit one-dimensional model, DWRM(Dynamic Wave Routing Model) was developed by using the four-point weighted difference method. By applying the developed model to the Keum River, the parameters were calibrated and the model applicability was tested through the comparison between observed and computed water levels. In addition, the effects of the construction of an estuary dam to the flood wave were estimated as a result of the model application. The results of the study can be summarized as follows; 1. The roughness coefficients were evaluated by comparison between observed and computed water level at Jindu, Gyuam and Ganggyeung station in 1985. The Root Mean Squares for water level differences between observed and computed values were 0.10, 0.11, 0. 29m and the differences of peak flood levels were 0.07, 0.02, 0. 07m at each station. Since the evaluated roughness coefficients were within the range of 0.029-0.041 showing the realistic value for the general condition of rivers, it can be concluded that the calibration has been completed. 2. By the application of model using the calibrated roughness coefficients, the R. M. S. for water level differences were 0.16, 0.24, 0. 24m and the differences of peak flood level were 0.17, 0.13,0.08 m at each station. The arrival time of peak flood at each station and the stage-discharge relationship at Gongju station agreed well with the observed values. Therefore, it was concluded that the model could be applied to the Keum River. 3. The model was applied under conditions before and after the construction of the estuary dam. The 50-year frequency flood which had 7, 800m$^3$/sec of peak flood was used as the upstream condition, and the spring tide and the neap tide were used as the downstream condition. As the results of the application, no change of the peak flood level was showed in the upper reaches of 19.2km upstream from the estuary dam. For areas near 9.6km upstream from the estuary dam, the change of the peak flood level under the condition before and after the construction was 0. 2m. However considering the assumptions for the boundary conditions of downstream, the change of peak flood level would be decreased.

  • A demonstration plant was carried out to investigate the removal efficiency of $NH_3-N$ and $KMnO_4$ consumption depending on the existence of pre-chlorination for the ozonation and activated carbon process in the S water treatment plant which is located at the middle of Keum River. The averge removal efficiency of $KMnO_4$ consumption for $O_3/GAC$ processes with pre-chlorination and $O_3/BAC$ processes without pre-chlorination were 48.6% and 50% respectively. It is similar to removal effect of $KMnO_4$ consumption for GAC and BAC process depending on the existence of pre-chlorination. Otherwise, the removal of THMFP for GAC and BAC process was 58% and 68% respectively. $NH_3-N$ was not almost removed by sand filter and ozonation, but the average removal efficiency in the BAC process was about 31%. Especially, $NH_3-N$ was not almost removed by $O_3/BAC$ processes at the low temperature (below $$10^{\circ}C$$) in the winter season, $O_3/BAC$ processes have the advantage of removal of organic substance when it is compared to pre -chlorination followed by $O_3/GAC$ processes. Pre-chlorination followed by $O_3/GAC$ processes were required to remove $NH_3-N$ in the winter season because the removal of $NH_3-N$ was almost ineffective by $O_3/BAC$ process.

  • To investigate the characteristic and the cause of the yellow water zones in the estuary of keum River, physico-chemical measurement and analyses were made on seawater samples collected from 18 stations in May, July, august, October in 1992, and February in 1993 respectively. The yellow water zones were recorded as grade 9 on the forel water color meter and appeared consistently at the stations 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 7, 8, 9, 13, 14, 15 and 17 through out the year. The organically polluted matter gradually increased in the study area. The nutrient concentrations of inner waters of water zones were higher than that of the surrounding waters and were over red tide criteria levels. But abnormal aggregation of phytoplanktons could not occur because of lack of light and high current velocity. In Conclusion, this yellowish colored water zone was caused not by abnormal aggregation of phytoplanktons but by inorganic matters such as sand or soil particles, $85\%$ of which consisted of suspended solids.

  • In order to evaluate the effect of dry-wet treatment on well developed tidal flats along the complex coastal line in the western part of Korean Peninsula, we adopted a finite element tidal hydrodynamic simulation model, ADCIRC incorporating newly suggested dry-wet option and applied it to Chonbuk coastal area and Keum river estuary. Model comparison with observed current data by RMS error in the Chonbuk area shows very good agreement within 1cm/sec of tidal velocity difference and 3% of error to maximum tidal currents. However there is not seen any significant advantages in dry-wet treatment. For the tidal volume tests in the Keum river estuary, the differences are satisfied within 5% nevertheless of dry-wet treatment but in a near cross section it marks over 20%. However both results are almost same in tidal residual tests. Thus it can be concluded that dry-wet option is not always necessary in the simulation of long-term dispersion analysis.

  • In this study, we identified spatial and temporal patterns of reservoir trophic state within Keum-river watershed and analyzed correlations between chlorophyll-$a$ (Chl-$a$) and water quality parameters including conductivity and total phosphorus (TP). The reservoirs were separated into three trophic categories by the criteria of TP: 2 oligotrophic (9.3~9.4 ${\mu}g\;L^{-1}$), 15 mesotrophic (10.3~19.2 ${\mu}g\;L^{-1}$), and 14 eutrophic reservoirs (38.9~117.1 ${\mu}g\;L^{-1}$). Water quality parameters such as conductivity, TP, and Chl-$a$ reflected rainfall patterns, and the patters of annual mean TP were similar to the variation of annual mean Chl-$a$. Empirical models of Chl-$a$ against TP in reservoirs showed that statistical significance ($p$ <0.05) occurred in only some seasons and the trophic relations were modified by a washing-out effect or high non-algal light attenuation.

  • This study analyzed the characteristics of stormwater runoff in the orchard areas and quantitatively estimated effluence of nonpoint source pollutants for the volume of runoff. Two target areas under vine cultivation were each $2,000m^2$ and $1,800m^2$, located in Gyeongju City. Since grape was the only crop on the target area, the characteristics of stormwater runoff at vineyard could be evaluated independently. A total of 51 rainfall events in the vineyard area during two years(2008-2009) was surveyed, and 19 of them became stormwater runoff, with rainfall ranging 16.5 - 79.7 mm and antecedent dry period of 1-13 days. The pollutant runoff loads by volume of stormwater runoff showed BOD ranging 19.5 - 45.3% in 30% of runoff volume. The average pollution discharge rate was 32.4%, indicating small first flush effect of BOD. The range of SS concentrations was 5 - 52.0% in 10% of runoff volume, showing the average 28.7% of discharge rate, about 3 times more than rainfall effluent. TOC and TN appeared to be similar to the results of BOD, the average discharge rate of 30.9% and 30.6% for TOC and TN, respectively, for 30% of stormwater runoff volume. Average discharge rate of COD and TP in the same runoff volume was 35.1% and 36%, respectively, showing comparatively high discharge ratio. As the targeted vineyard area was permeable land, the pollution load ratio against rainfall-runoff volume appeared to be 1:1, implying no strong first flush effect for all the survey items.

  • Water of river gets great concern about its quality, which might be polluted with pollutant from various industrial plants booming along the river sides in recent years. As a first step to prevent any applciable damage due to water pollution, survey on the water quality of Keum river at Sintanjin, Maepo, Taepyongri, Kongju, Puyeo and Kanggeng, six regions was conducted during september, 1977 through august, 1978 and the results were summarized as follow: 1. There were no significant regional and monthly difference in pH, $NO_2-N$, and $NO_3-N$ of water. 2. The BOD at Puyeo, Kanggeng was 3.9 to 5.6, 5.6 to 6.0 ppm, respectively, and those values reached the limiting level for tap water sources. 3. The BOD at Maepo, where Daejeon streams meet, was found 1.9, 3.0, and 2.1 times higher than those at Sintanjin region, during september, october and november, respectvely. 4. Content of DO was $7.6{\pm}3.8ppm$ in all surveyed regions and varied with water temperature and regional difference. 5. There were found regional difference and monthly difference in water hardness, suspended solid and $NH_3-N$.

  • An analysis of flow duration characteristics of the five major rivers in Korea was conducted with extensive river flow data available. The analysis reveals that, for most river stage-gauging stations at the rivers investigated in this study, the flow duration characteristics have changed drastically at some stations after major dammings in the river basins. Streamflow variability. which is newly defined in this study as the ratio of the 2.5 percents (or 10 day) duration discharge over the 97.5 percents (or 355 day) duration one, was also reduced by the dammings. The result of the study shows that the Han and the Yeongsan rivers have relatively small flow variation, while the Seomjin and the Keum rivers have relatively large now variation, which implies that the latter two river basins need new water resources development.
