  • Taoism exercised its influence and has made much progress apparently under the aegis of the Tang dynasty. But since the external alchemy, a traditional way of eternal life that they have pursued, met the limitation, they were placed in a situation where they needed to seek a new discipline. From this period to the early North Song dynasty, three religions have established the unique theoretical systems of their own theory of ascetic practices. They showed their own unique formats as follows. Neo-Confucianism established the theory of moral training, Buddhism did the theory of ascetic practices and Taoism had theory of discipline. By this time, a person who claimed the Intermixture of Three Religions composed the new system of theory of ascetic practice by taking advantage of other religions and putting them into his own view. Chen tuan established the theory of internal alchemy of Taoism and was the most influential figure in the world of thought since North Song dynasty. He clearly declared that he accepted the merits of other religions in his theory. He added I Ching of Confucianism in I Ching of secret of Taoism to stop the logical gaps during the process of disciplines in Taoism and took ascetic practices on mind of Buddhism into his system while he sought a way to integrate the dual structure of body and mind. The theory of Chen tuan's internal alchemy was training schema with stages of 'YeonJeongHwaGi', 'YeonGiHwaSin', and 'YeonSinHwanHeo' based on the concepts of vital, energy and spirit. The internal alchemy practice that Chen tuan was saying started from the practice of Zen to keep the mind calm with the basis of fundamental principles of interpretation of book of change according to Taoism. When a person reached the state to be in concert with all changes at the end of the silence and be full of wisdoms, he finally returned to the state of BokGwiMuGeuk by taking the flow of subtle mind and transforming it into energy. He expressed this process by drawing 'MuGeukDo'. Oriental philosophy categorized human into 'phenomenal existence' and 'original existence'. The logic of theory of ascetic practice has been established from these 'category of existence'. It would be determined whether it will return to 'original existence' or be stepped up from 'phenomenal existence' according to how the concept of 'self' or 'I' was made. Chen tuan who established the theory of internal alchemy in Taoism has established the unique theory of internal alchemy discipline and system of intermixture of three religions in this aspect. Today is called 'era of self-loss' or 'era of incurable diseases' caused by environmental pollution. It's still meaningful to review the theory of discipline of Chen tuan's connecting the body and the soul to heal the self, and keep life healthy and pursue the new way of discipline based on it.

  • In this thesis, I intend to study the translational and clinical interpretation through the theory of Eum-Yang-Li-Hap', and reached the following conclusions. 1. 'Eum-Yang (陰陽)' in title, means Yin and Yang as method of understanding nature or humanbody, and 'Li-Hap (離合)' in title, means classification and getting together. Especially there are a view that Eum Yang in title means only meridinans within the limit of human body, but the limit needn't, because the word 'Li-Hap of 3Yin-3Yang (三陰三陽之離合)' as meaning of human meridians in the text. 2. The content of the text is generally seperated into 3 parts, the 1st part contents properties of Li Hap of Yin and Yang. 2nd and 3rd parts content the explanation of property of 3Yin and 3Yang, as example of human meridians with local conception, and content nicknames of 3Yin-3Yang and present the Ideo of 'Kae-Hap-Choo (開闔樞)'. 3. 3Yin-3Yang in the text, many of annotators tried to explanate by three types of conception, of human meridians, of the 'Viscera-Bowels (臟腑)', or of the 'Element motions and Natural factors (運氣)'. I think that these three conceptions could be mixed when the text was written, and regarde for the present that 3Yin-3Yang is explanated by the conception of human meridians. 4. 'Eum (陰)' the head-letter of the nicknames of 3Yin-3Yang, I think that it means 'Jok-Gyeong (足經)' related with the words 'The earth belongs to Yin (地爲陰)' in the text. And it i s considered that further studies should be followed on the tail-words of 3Yin-3Yang's nicknams. 5. Kae-Hap-Choo, Used in similitude" as 'Li (離)' of 3Yin-3Yang, are seperated functions by location of 3Yin-3Yang. In text 'Tae-Yang (太陽)' and 'Tae-Eum (太陰)' act as 'Kae (開)', 'Yang-Myeong (陽明)', and 'Gweor-Eum (厥陰)' act as 'Hap (闔)', 'So-Yang (少陽)' and 'So-Eum (少陰)' act as 'Choo (樞).' But there is other theory that Gweor-Eum act as Choo, and So-Eum act as Hap. 6. The theory of Kae-Hop-Choo, including only Jok-Gyeong being main materials of 'Yook Gyeong-Byeon-Jeung (六經辨證) had influence on development of clinical studies. If the theory of Kae-Hap-Choo receives and unions the ideos of '3 burning-Spaces (三焦)', metabolism, etc. more development of medicine is expected.

  • In this study, we investigated the possibility of Kaempferia Galanga(KG) hot water extract on the antioxidant, cytotoxic and anti-inflammatory efficacy as a cosmetic ingredient. Antioxidant effects were evaluated based on DPPH and ABTS radical scavenging activity, FRAP assay, and total polyphenol contents. The MTT assay was used to confirm the cell toxicity in mouse macrophage RAW264.7 cells. Anti-inflammatory effects were also investigated in LPS-induced RAW264.7 cells by measuring secretion of NO, $TNF-{\alpha}$ and iNOS, $TNF-{\alpha}$ mRNA expression level. As a result, DPPH and ABTS radical scavenging activities were increased in a concentration-dependent manner. The ferric reducing antioxidant power(FRAP) was the highest at 5 mg/mL as 24.5 uM. The measurements of total polyphenol content was $1.28{\pm}0.064mg\;GAE/g$. The cytotoxicity of the KG extract results showed no cytotoxicity at concentration of 0.625 to 2.5 mg/mL. In addition, the extract of KG significantly suppressed the LPS-induced nitrite, $TNF-{\alpha}$ secretion and the mRNA expression of iNOS, $TNF-{\alpha}$ in RAW264.7 cells. Taken together, these data suggest that the KG hot water extracts can be used as a safe and functional cosmetic raw material.

  • We investigated 'Song of the Sky Pacers, Adopted to the New Methods'(新法步天歌), the latest version of Joseon's 'Song of the Sky Pacers'(步天歌). Due to the influence of new knowledge on Chinese asterisms imported from the Ching dynasty, 'Song of the Sky Pacers with New Star-Charts' was written in the eighteenth century. However, the disagreement between song and star-charts was causing confusion in practical applications such as Joseon's national examination for selecting astronomers. In order to improve this situation, Royal Observatory of the Joseon dynasty (觀象監) published 'Song of the Sky Pacers, Adopted to the New Methods' based upon star-charts and song in the Sequel of I-Hsiang-K'ao-ch'eng (欽定儀象考成續編). The New Song was edited by a middle-class professional astronomer Yi Jun-yang (李俊養), and corrected by a nobleman Nam Byeong-gil (南秉吉). We establish a brief biography of Yi Jun-yang. The New Song preserves the genuine characteristics of previous Joseon's Song including the format of title of each lunar mansion and description on the location of the Milky Way in the asterisms. The description of the Milky Way was newly written based on the data in volume 31 and 32 of the Sequel of I-Hsiang-K'ao-ch'eng.

  • The purpose of this research is mainly to make an analysis and comparison of the purchasing behaviors of consumers in Mainland China and Taiwan. We precede this research with a questionnaire survey. In Mainland China, we targeted consumers of 10 department stores of the Parkson Plaza Co., Ltd. that are located in 10 different cities. In Taiwan, we selected 3 department stores of the Far Eastern Department Stores in 3 cities. The results of this analysis indicate the importance of quality attributes to the consumers for both Mainland China and Taiwan, albeit with some differentiations. The consumers in China are more focused on the merchandise for example as well as imitation, quality and price. Contrarily, the consumers in Taiwan are more attentive to service quality and parking Issues. On the level of evaluation of satisfaction, the differences are not so obvious for both sides. For example, the quality attributes of “No imitation products” and “Friendly servers” are ranked as the most satisfactory items for both sides. Generally speaking, the service quality of Taiwan's department stores is very outstanding. There are also some differences in the areas of lesser satisfaction between consumers of China and Taiwan. The consumers in China identified the quality attribute “the designs of merchandising, display and the usage of each floor” as the most dissatisfactory item, while the performance on this quality attribute is well accepted by the consumers of Taiwan's department stores. Another contradiction is that Taiwan's consumers are more concerned about “Parking”; this quality attribute obtained much less attention from the consumers in Mainland China. From the analysis of determinants that will have impacts on the willingness of customers to buy again, we found that the viewpoints of consumers from both sides are quite similar. The two main factors are “quality of merchandise” and “service quality”. However, the consumers in Mainland China care more about “the price of merchandise”; this is less important to the consumers in Taiwan. We may conclude from the importance and satisfaction level of the quality attributes and determinants for return customers that differences are caused mainly by the different management of the department stores and the different living circumstances of people across the straights.

  • The purpose of this study was to systemize the 'Eagi(理氣)' theory in Feng Shui which has been neglected in Korea because of its difficulties in the current Feng Shui theory and to make it easier to apply in the art of placement. The study also analysed the characteristics of the location of a sample village in terms of Feng Shui. Besides the placement analysis, the interpretation of the Yangtaek(陽宅) theory was analysed on the layout of the outdoor space of the building. As the initial step, various theories about Feng Shui were investigated. Based on those, the framework of the Feng Shui theory was summarized for application to the case study. Yangtaeksamyo(陽宅三要) was referred to for consideration of Feng Shui theory outside the residential buildings. At the same time, configurational analysis of the ground was carried out with the naked eye and actual measurements were taken using a specific compass(佩鐵). The results were summarized as follows : First, the 'Eagi' theory in Feng Shui, which finds a 'lucky site(穴)' selects the 'geomagnetic aspect(坐向)' by analyzing the natural forces of wind and water. In this theory, the aspect was regarded of most importance. 'Yangtaek Feng Shui (陽宅風水)' was the theory that people's ups and downs depends on the direction of the place where they live on, and was developed on the basis of 'I ching(周易)'. Second, the village and the house in the case study have been considered as lucky places from old times and this was equally verified by the 'Eagi (理氣)' theory and the "Yangtaek (陽宅)' theory.

  • Background: Huntington's disease (HD) is a neurodegenerative disorder caused by the expansion of trinucleotide CAG repeat in the Huntingtin (Htt) gene. The major pathogenic pathways underlying HD involve the impairment of cellular energy homeostasis and DNA damage in the brain. The protein kinase ataxia-telangiectasia mutated (ATM) is an important regulator of the DNA damage response. ATM is involved in the phosphorylation of AMP-activated protein kinase (AMPK), suggesting that AMPK plays a critical role in response to DNA damage. Herein, we demonstrated that expression of polyQ-expanded mutant Htt (mHtt) enhanced the phosphorylation of ATM. Ginsenoside is the main and most effective component of Panax ginseng. However, the protective effect of a ginsenoside (compound K, CK) in HD remains unclear and warrants further investigation. Methods: This study used the R6/2 transgenic mouse model of HD and performed behavioral tests, survival rate, histological analyses, and immunoblot assays. Results: The systematic administration of CK into R6/2 mice suppressed the activation of ATM/AMPK and reduced neuronal toxicity and mHTT aggregation. Most importantly, CK increased neuronal density and lifespan and improved motor dysfunction in R6/2 mice. Conversely, CK enhanced the expression of Bcl2 protected striatal cells from the toxicity induced by the overactivation of mHtt and AMPK. Conclusions: Thus, the oral administration of CK reduced the disease progression and markedly enhanced lifespan in the transgenic mouse model (R6/2) of HD.

  • Awareness of grievances and the concept of "grievances (冤)" itself are both universal and essential among East Asian countries. Grievances have become a cultural symbol that has repeatedly appeared in the Han culture of later generations. The way new religious groups interpret "grievances" and face disasters, which are seen as having been brought by grievances, reflects the circumstances and historical backgrounds that Eastern nations hold in common. This paper aims to discuss the concept of "grievances" in Taiwan's Weixin Shengjiao and Korea's Daesoon Jinrihoe, which are represented doctrinally as "The Resolution of Grievances and Altruism" (in Weixin Shengjiao) and "The Resolution of Grievances for Mutual Beneficence" (in Daesoon Jinrihoe). How these two tenets are fulfilled in modern society will likewise be examined. Weixin Shengjiao takes solving the hatred among the Three Ancestors as a premise for achieving world peace and commits to stabilizing people's lives amid the capitalistic design of modern society. Daesoon Jinrihoe deems the "Reordering Works" to be the only way to unify the earthly energies to achieve balance in the universe. They also developed the "Three Major Works" to contribute to modern society. These two new religious orders share many similarities, but are distinct in their interpretations and practices. Both orders demonstrate the features and meaning of "Solving Grievances" as it relates to the process of modernization in East Asia.

  • Background: The human mandible is variable in shape, size and position and any deviation from normal can affect the facial appearance and dental occlusion. Objectives: The objectives of this study were to determine whether the Sassouni cephalometric analysis could help predict two-dimensional mandibular shape in humans using cephalometric planes and landmarks. Materials and methods: A retrospective computerised analysis of 100 lateral cephalometric radiographs taken at Kingston Hospital Orthodontic Department was carried out. Results: Results showed that the Euclidean straight-line mean difference between the estimated position of gonion and traced position of gonion was 7.89 mm and the Euclidean straight-line mean difference between the estimated position of pogonion and the traced position of pogonion was 11.15 mm. The length of the anterior cranial base as measured by sella-nasion was positively correlated with the length of the mandibular body gonion-menton, r = 0.381 and regression analysis showed the length of the anterior cranial base sella-nasion could be predictive of the length of the mandibular body gonion-menton by the equation 22.65 + 0.5426x, where x = length of the anterior cranial base (SN). There was a significant association with convex shaped palates and oblique shaped mandibles, p = 0.0004. Conclusions: The method described in this study can be used to help estimate the position of cephalometric points gonion and pogonion and thereby sagittal mandibular length. This method is more accurate in skeletal class I cases and therefore has potential applications in craniofacial anthropology and the 'missing mandible' problem in forensic and archaeological reconstruction.
