Calcium carbonate ($CaCO_3$) content was measured from 3 box core (BC060301, BC060303, BC070301) sediments, in addition to pilot core (PC313) sediments, from deep waters within the Western Pacific Ocean. At the two collection sites (BC060301, PC313) located close to the equator, downcore variation exhibited low $CaCO_3$ content during the interglacial period and high $CaCO_3$ content during the glacial period. Variation of coarse fraction (>$63\;{\mu}m$) content also followed changes in $CaCO_3$ content, indicating that dissolution effect of bottom water decreased during the glacial period. Such variation pattern is typical of the Pacific Ocean. However, downcore variation at the two collection sites (BC060303, BC070301) in the Philippine Sea contrasted the trend of the previous two cores (i.e., high $CaCO_3$ content during the interglacial period and low during the glacial period). This pattern is typical of the Atlantic Ocean. Such results may be attributed to the increasing dilution effect, initiated possibly by the increased transportation of terrigenous materials from nearby continent and archipelago during the glacial period when sea level was low. Alternatively, it is possible that the non-carbonate biogenic particles may have been responsible for dilution. Because of these uncertainties, the record of $CaCO_3$ variation in the deep Western Pacific Ocean is not regionally consistent.

The freshwater red algal genus Sheathia contains species with heterocortication (both bulbous and cylindrical cells covering the main axis) and homocortication (only cylindrical cells). When the genus was proposed, the species with heterocortication were revised, but all specimens with homocortication were assigned to Sheathia arcuata with the caveat that it may represent a species complex. Recent studies have described new species with homocortication and S. arcuata has been rendered paraphyletic. In the current study, new sequences of the rbcL and 5′ region of the cytochrome c oxidase subunit I markers were combined with previously published data to construct a robust phylogeny and circumscribe new species. Four new species, S. abscondita, S. californica, S. plantuloides, and S. transpacifica are proposed. Examination of morphological characters among homocorticate species show no diagnostic characters to distinguish among species, whereas S. plantuloides is only known from sporophytes (chantransia) so it lacks the typical morphological characters derived from the gametophytes for comparison. Although DNA sequence data would be needed to make a positive species identification, geography could be employed to narrow the identification to one or two species. The genus is geographically widespread having been recorded from oceanic islands and five continents, whereas the individual species typically occur on a single continent. With this study, the number of species recognized in Sheathia is raised to 17; seven heterocorticate and 10 homocorticate, making this genus one of the most species rich in the Batrachospermales. As well, the resulting phylogeny provides insights into the evolution of heterocortication in Sheathia.
This study is conducted to examine the data of climate or environmental change in the northeastern Asia during the last glacial maximum. A remarkable feature of the 18,000 BP biome reconstructions for China is the mid-latitude extention of steppe and desert biomes to the modem eastern coast. Terrestrial deposits of glacial maximum age from the northern part of Yellow Sea suggest that this region of the continental shelf was occupied by desert and steppe vegetation. And the shift from temperate forest to steppe and desert implies conditions very much drier than present in eastern Asia. Dry conditions might be explained by a strong winter monsoon and/or a weak summer monsoon. A very strong depression of winter temperatures at LGM. has in the center of continent has influenced in northeast Asia similarly. The vegetation of Hokkaido at LGM was subarctic thin forest distributed on the northern area of middle Honshu and cool and temperate mixed forest at southern area of middle Honshu in Japan. The vegetation landscape of mountain- and East coast region of Korea was composed of herbaceous plants with sparse arctic or subarctic trees. The climate of yellow sea surface and west region of Korea was much drier and temperate steppe landscape was extended broadly. It is supposed that a temperate desert appeared on the west coast area of Pyeongan-Do and Cheolla-Do of Korea. The reconstruction of year-round conditions much colder than today right across China, Korea and Japan is consistent with biome reconstruction at the LGM.

Atmospheric boundary layer over equatorial maritime continent was analyzed with Doppler radar. An L-band (1357.5 MHz) boundary layer radar (BLR) has been in continuous successful operation in Selpong, Indonesia(6.45, 106.7E), since November 1992. The performance of the BLR with respect to the observation height range and the wind measurement reliability has been examined on the basis of simultaneous meteorological observations. In the dry season (10-12 October 1993), we have found two types of strong echo structures appearing systematically in the equatorial planetary boundary layer with diurnal variations on clear days. The first type is the striking appearance of a strong echo layer ascending from below 300 m (in the morning) to above 3-5 km (in the afternoon), which is identified with a diurnal variation of the top of the mixing planetary boundary layer. As expected, it is higher in the Indonesian equatorial region than in midlatitudes. Another type is a layered echo appearing at 2-3 km heights from nighttime to morning, which seem to be coincident with humidity gaps. In the rainy season (20-21 February 1994), the height of the atmospheric mining was lower than that in the dry season.

The ionic compositions were analyzed from the TSP samples collected at Gosan site in Jeju Island between 2000 and 2008, in order to examine the characteristics of atmospheric aerosols in accordance with the meteorological conditions. For the Asian Dust influence on the ionic compositions, the concentration ratios of $NH_4{^+}$, nss-${SO_4}^{2-}$, $NO_3{^-}$, and $K^+$ were about 1.2~2.3 during Asian Dust over Non-Asian Dust periods, noticeably that of nss-$Ca^{2+}$ was 6.8. Meanwhile the concentrations of nss-${SO_4}^{2-}$, $NO_3{^-}$, and $NH_4{^+}$ have increased as 1.8~4.4 times during the haze event periods, and 1.0~1.6 times during the fog and mist events. The ion balance has resulted that the anionic concentrations are relatively lower than the cationic concentrations, and the discrepancy appears more decidedly as a strong Asian Dust effect. The ammonium ion balance has shown that it exists as a mixture of $NH_4HSO_4$ and $(NH_4)_2SO_4$. The concentration ratios of nss-${SO_4}^{2-}/NO_3{^-}$ for Asian Dust, haze, fog-mist, and non-event periods were respectively 1.8, 5.9, 4.6, and 2.9, which were higher values compared to those in urban areas of China as well as other domestic regions. Especially, the high ratios of sulfur oxides could be presumed by the fact that the longrange transport of air pollutants from Asia continent might affect the atmospheric aerosols of Jeju Island.
The gravity measurement has been conducted at 113 stations with an interval of about 1km along the national road of about 120km running from Busangdong to Pohang through Waekwan, Daegu, Youngchun and Aankang. The subsurface geology and structure along the survey line is interpreted from Bouguer anomaly by applying Fourier method and Talwani method for two dimensional body. The mean depth of Moho discontinuity is 31.4km, and the depth decreases very slowly from inner continent toward east coast. The depth of Conrad discontinuity increases from 11km at the east coastal area to 17km at the inner continental area, and especially increases rapidly in the area between Waekwan to Busangdong. The depth of basement of Kyoungsang Basin inereases from near Waekwan toward Daegu upto about 4. 8km, and increases rapidly to reach the maximum depth of about 8.5km at 8km east of Daegu. But it starts to decrease from the place of 10km west of Youngchun, and is about 7.2km at Youngchun and about 6km at 6km east of Youngchun. The depth starts to increase smoothly beyond this point, and is 7km at 15km east of Youngchun. From this point, the depth starts to decrease again, and is about 3.8km at Ankang. The depth of basement of Pohang Basin is 500m at Pohang and about 650m at 5km west of Pohang. A massive granite body which is considered to be a part of Palgongsan Granite exposed at the depth of 1. 5km at 9km west of Youngchun. Another massive granite body is situated underneath the Pohang Basin at depth of 1.5 to 2km, and sedimentary rocks of Kyoungsang Group and volcanic rocks are distributed between Pohang Basin and this granite body. Finally, Yangsan Fault is identified at about 2.5km east of Ankang.

Recently, with the development of data processing technology and the increase of computational power, methods to solving social problems using Artificial Intelligence (AI) are in the spotlight, and AI technologies are replacing and supplementing existing traditional methods in various fields. Meanwhile in Korea, heavy rain is one of the representative factors of natural disasters that cause enormous economic damage and casualties every year. Accurate prediction of heavy rainfall over the Korean peninsula is very difficult due to its geographical features, located between the Eurasian continent and the Pacific Ocean at mid-latitude, and the influence of the summer monsoon. In order to deal with such problems, the Korea Meteorological Administration operates various state-of-the-art observation equipment and a newly developed global atmospheric model system. Nevertheless, for precipitation nowcasting, the use of a separate system based on the extrapolation method is required due to the intrinsic characteristics associated with the operation of numerical weather prediction models. The predictability of existing precipitation nowcasting is reliable in the early stage of forecasting but decreases sharply as forecast lead time increases. At this point, AI technologies to deal with spatio-temporal features of data are expected to greatly contribute to overcoming the limitations of existing precipitation nowcasting systems. Thus, in this project the dataset required to develop, train, and verify deep learning-based precipitation nowcasting models has been constructed in a regularized form. The dataset not only provides various variables obtained from multiple sources, but also coincides with each other in spatio-temporal specifications.

Characterizing the performance of precipitation (hereafter PRE) products in estimating the uncertainties in daily PRE in the era of global warming is of great value to the ecosystem's sustainability and human survival. This study intercompares the performance of different PRE products (gauge-based, satellite and reanalysis) sourced from the Frequent Rainfall Observations on GridS (FROGS) database over diverse climate zones in Africa and identifies regions where they depict minimal uncertainties in order to build optimal maps as a guide for different climate users. This is achieved by utilizing various techniques, including the triple collection (TC) approach, to assess the capabilities and limitations of different PRE products over nine climatic zones over the continent. For daily scale analysis, the uncertainties in light PRE (0.1 5mm/day) are prevalent over most regions in Africa during the study duration (2001-2016). Estimating the occurrence of extreme PRE events based on daily PRE 90th percentile suggests that extreme PRE is mainly detected over central Africa (CAF) region and some coastal regions of west Africa (WAF) where the majority of uncorrected satellite products show good agreement. The detection of PRE days and non-PRE days based on categorical statistics suggests that a perfect POD/FAR score is unattainable irrespective of the product type. Daily PRE uncertainties determined based on quantitative metrics show that consistent, satisfactory performance is demonstrated by the IMERG products (uncorrected), ARCv2, CHIRPSv2, 3B42v7.0 and PERSIANN_CDRv1r1 (corrected), and GPCC, CPC_v1.0, and REGEN_ALL (gauge) during the study period. The optimal maps that show the classification of products in regions where they depict reliable performance can be recommended for various usage for different stakeholders.

Land evaporation contribution to precipitation over East Asia is studied to understand terrestrial moisture source of continental precipitation. Moisture recycling of precipitation relying on terrestrial evaporation is estimated based on the analysis method of Van der Ent et al. (2010). We utilize HadGEM2-AO simulations for the period of 1970~1999 and 2070~2099 from RCP8.5. Globally, 46% of terrestrial precipitation is depending from continental evaporation. 58% of terrestrial evaporation returns as continental precipitation. Over East Asia, precipitation has been affected by local evaporation and transported moisture. The advection of upwind continental evaporation results from the prevailing westerlies from the midwestern of Eurasian continent. For the present-day period, about 66% of the precipitation over the land of East Asia originates from land evaporation. Regionally, the ratios change and the ratios of precipitation terrestrial origin over the Northern inland and Southern coast of East Asia are 82% and 48%, respectively. Seasonally, the continental moisture recycling ratio is larger during summer (JJA) than winter (DJF). According to RCP8.5, moisture recycling ratio is expected to change. At the end of the 21st century, the impact of continental moisture sources for precipitation over East Asia is projected to be reduced by about 5% compared to at the end of 20th century. To understand the future changes, moisture residence time change is investigated using depletion and replenishment time.

A set of 1994 data was analyzed to investigate the characteristics of background surface SO$_{2}$ concentrations at Kosan, Cheju Island, Korea. The SO$_{2}$ concentrations at Kosan site show a seasonal variation with a minimum(0.46 ppb) in summer, maximum(1.02 ppb) in spring and an annual mean of 0.83 ppb. These values were 4-7 times higher than those measured in other remote areas, such as Bermuda and Oki Island, but they were similar to the baseline concentrations of other sites in the world. The diurnal variation of SO$_{2}$ concentrations was very small and it shows a peak at 10 am in spring and fall, 2 pm in summer, and 1 pm in winter, respectively. Correlations between local meteorological parameters and SO$_{2}$ concentrations were mot significant. This suggests that the variations of the Kosan's SO$_{2}$ comcentrations were relatively independent on local meteorological variables. Backward trajectory analysis results showed that the seasonal variation of the OS$_{2}$ concentration was mainly due to the inflow of air masses from the continent in spring and from the Pacific Ocean im summer. The results also revealed that the air masses with the highest SO$_{2}$ concentration came through China or the Korea peninsula in spring and through Japan during summer. It was found that the SO$_{2}$ concentrations at Kosan were under the influence of passage of air masses arriving at this site.
