  • The stochastic variance and structures of time series data on air quality were examined by employing the techniques of autocorrelation function, variance spectrum, fourier series, ARIMA model. Among the air quality properties of atmosphere, SO$_{2}$ is one of the most siginificant and widely measured parameters. In the study, the air quality data were included hourly observations on SO$_{2}$ TSP and O$_{3}$. The data were measured by automatic recording instrument installed in Kwanghwamoon during February and March in 1991. The results of study were as follows 1. Hourly air quality series varied with the domiant 24 hour periodicity and the 12 hour periodic variation was also observed. 2. The correlation coefficients between SO$_{2}$ and O$_{3}$ is -0.4735. 3. In simulating or forecasting variation in SO$_{2}$ ARIMA models are on a useful tools. The multiplicative seasonal ARIMA (1, 1, 0) (0, 2, 1)$_{24}$ model provided satisfactory results for hourly SO$_{2}$ time series.

  • As non-road mobile pollutants such as construction equipment are emerging as the main cause of air pollutants emission, construction equipment regulations are gradually strengthening. Research was conducted by correcting the emission coefficient to calculate and predict air pollutant emissions of construction equipment, but it did not reflect site variables such as field and equipment conditions that affect actual emissions. This study derived an Artificial Neural Network emission prediction model based on the actual emission data of excavators and trucks measured at the site and proposed a platform to predict the emission of air pollutants at the site according to the working size and conditions. Through this, it is possible to establish an eco-friendly process plan using a model from the construction plan.

  • Thermal and flow modeling and fin structure optimization were performed to reduce the weight of an electrical device with a staggered fin. First, a numerical model for thermal and flow characteristics was suggested, and then, the model was verified experimentally. Using the verified model, improvement in cooling performance of the cooling system through the staggered fins was predicted. As a result, 87.5% of total heat generated was dissipated through the cooling fins, and a thermal island was observed in the rotor because of low velocity of the internal air flow through the air gap. In addition, it was confirmed that the staggered fin improves the cooling performance but it also increases the total pressure drop within the cooling system, by maximizing the leading edge effect. Based on this analysis result, the effect of each design parameter on the thermal and flow characteristics was analyzed to select the main optimal design parameters, and multi-objective optimization was performed by considering the cooling performance and the fin weight. In conclusion, the optimized fin structure improved the cooling performance by 7% and reduced the fin weight by 28% without any compromise of the pressure drop.

  • The Urban Canopy Model (UCM) implemented in WRF model is applied to improve urban meteorological forecast for fine-scale (about 1-km horizontal grid spacing) simulations over the city of Seoul. The results of the surface air temperature and wind speed predicted by WRF-UCM model is compared with those of the standard WRF model. The 2-m air temperature and wind speed of the standard WRF are found to be lower than observation, while the nocturnal urban canopy temperature from the WRF-UCM is superior to the surface air temperature from the standard WRF. Although urban canopy temperature (TC) is found to be lower at industrial sites, TC in high-intensity residential areas compares better with surface observation than 2-m temperature. 10-m wind speed is overestimated in urban area, while urban canopy wind (UC) is weaker than observation by the drag effect of the building. The coupled WRF-UCM represents the increase of urban heat from urban effects such as anthropogenic heat and buildings, etc. The study indicates that the WRF-UCM contributes for the improvement of urban weather forecast such nocturnal heat island, especially when an accurate urban information dataset is provided.

  • As the emission regulations on the automobiles have been increasingly stringent, precise control of air/fuel ration is one of the most important issues on the gasoline engines. Although many researches have been carried out to identify the fuel transport phenomena in the port fuel injection gasolines, mixture preparation in the cylinder has not been fully understood due to the complexity of fuel film behavior, In this paper, the mixture preparation during cold engine start is studied by using a Fast Response Flame ionization Detector.(FRFID) In order to estimate the transportation of injected fuel from the intake port into cylinder, the wall wetting fuel model was used. The two coefficient($\alpha$,$\beta$) of the wall-wetting fuel model was determined from the measured fuel mass that was inducted into the cylinder at the first cycle after injection cut-in. $\alpha$( ratio of directly inducted fuel mass into cylinder from injected fuel mass) and $\beta$ (ratio of indirectly inducted fuel mass into cylinder from wall wetted fuel film on the wall) was increased with increasing cooling water temperature. To reduce a air/fuel ratio fluctuation during cold engine start, the appropriate fuel injection rate was obtained from the wall wetting fuel model. Result of air/fuel ratio control, air/fuel excursion was reduced.

  • A scheme for fault detection on the subsystem level is presented. The method uses analytical redundancy and consists in generating residuals by comparing each measurement with an estimate computed from the reference models. In this study regression neural network models are used as reference models. The regression neural network is memory-based feed forward network that provides estimates of continuous variables. The simulation result demonstrated that the proposed method can effectively detect faults in an air handling unit(AHU). The results show that the regression models are accurate and reliable estimators of the highly nonlinear and complex AHU.

  • This paper presents a numerical evaluation of the flow rate of air conditioner outdoor unit by investigating the effects of fan location and shroud shape. To determine optimal design parameters, we investigated the exhaust flow rate by changing shroud height, fan height, fan guide height, and fan width. The 3rd order central composite design was performed to select three most important parameters affecting the exhaust flow rate. According to the result of response surface method, the exhaust flow rate of the optimum model increased by 6.25% compared to that of the base model.

  • In this study, a three-dimensional variational(3DVAR) data assimilation system was developed for the operational numerical weather prediction(NWP) system at the Republic of Korea Air Force Weather Group. The Air Force NWP system utilizes the Weather Research and Forecasting(WRF) meso-scale regional model to provide weather information for the military service. Thus, the data assimilation system was developed based on the WRF model. Experiments were conducted to identify the nested model domain to assimilate observations and the period appropriate in estimating the background error covariance(BEC) in 3DVAR. The assimilation of observations in domain 2 is beneficial to improve 24-h forecasts in domain 3. The 24-h forecast performance does not change much depending on the estimation period of the BEC in 3DVAR. The results of this study provide a basis to establish the operational data assimilation system for the Republic of Korea Air Force Weather Group.

  • This paper describes the PI controller design based on a practical transfer function model for centrifugal water chillers. The rotational speed of a compressor and the opening angle of an electronic expansion valve were simultaneously regulated as manipulated variables to maintain temperature reference and to ensure high efficiency of the chiller. The COP according to the change in each variable was investigated by performing some static experiments, and it was reflected in the PI controller design to accomplish the high efficiency control. Especially, the practical transfer function model of the chiller was built based on the dynamic experimental data considering the strong inherent non-linearity and complexity of the chiller system. The validity of the designed PI controller was proven by some experimental results using the test facility and the results were also compared to the conventional evaporating pressure control results.

  • Factors governing the rate of heat exchange comprise temperature, air velocity, relative humidity, and relation indoors. Recently, there are many researches on the transient analysis of indoor environmental factors such as dry bulb temperature, relative humidity and air velocity in miniature models. The purpose of this study is to measure the environmental factors and to analyze and evaluate the characteristics of indoor environment in different envelop structures using granite dome models. The interior relative humidity is constant regardless of exterior humidity although a little range of variation is shown in comparison to the cement model.
