A Study on Information Required for the Development of New Textile Materials of Korean Textile Industry

  • The Korean textile industry the driving force of Korea's economic development, is faced with difficulties due to domestic and foreign influences. The purpose of this paper is to examine what measures are necessary for overcoming such difficulties. As the first step, We conducted a month-long survey, in August 2003, of 157 small-medium firms operating in the Korean textile industry to collect information about difficulties that they face in carrying out their business. According to the result, small firms performed badly in sales and facility investment efforts for 2003 due to worldwide economic depression. They, however, actively pursued new technology development in order to improve their competitiveness. Profits and productivity decreased with reduced sales, and their view on the next year’s perspective is also very unfavorable. Especially many firms intend to maintain or even lower the level of sales goal for 2004, reflecting the sluggish market environment. According to the survey, under such circumstances, as many as 74% of firms wanted to turn the tables through the development of highly sensuous material and improved marketing efforts. One of potential answers to this problem, which is suggested by the survey, is to establish a consulting service institution to provide promptly marketing data and information on textile and fashion market and trend in Italy. Especially, firms surveyed have shown a great deal of interest in Italian consulting service for new textile material developments. While they want the service for high value-added product development, they are reluctant to do so because of the uncertainty of its future effects and high consulting fees.

Counterstrategy of Textile/Clothing Industry to FTA (Focusing on Korea-US/China FTA) (섬유/의류 산업의 FTA 대응전략 (한-미, 한-중 FTA를 중심으로))

  • There is an expanding global network of free trade agreements (FTA). High-quality, comprehensive free trade agreements play an important role to support global trade liberalization and are explicitly allowed under the World Trade Organization (WTO) rules. An FTA is an international treaty that removes barriers to trade and facilitates stronger trade and commercial ties that contribute to increased economic integration between participating countries. Korea benefits from the global FTA trend; however it has started and developed FTA negotiations later than other countries. Current FTA agreements exist with Chile, Singapore, EFTA, ASIAN, India, EU, Peru, USA, Turkey, Australia, and Canada; in addition, there are ongoing negotiations with China, Colombia, New Zealand, and Vietnam. FTA open up opportunities for the textile/clothing industry to expand businesses into key overseas markets. FTA improve market access across all areas of trade to help maintain and stimulate the competitiveness of textile/clothing firms. This study examines the expansion of free trade agreements in light of changes in the international trade environment and the status of the Korean textile/clothing industry. Korea's textile/clothing export/import products and concession of tariff, country of origin covered under Korea-US/China FTA are investigated to identify problems. This study provides practical and policy implications for the textile/clothing industry in regards to the Korea-US/China FTA.

Examination of Development State of Smart Fiber in Korean Textile Industry - Focused on Companies in Daegu/North Gyeongsang Province - (한국 섬유기업의 스마트섬유 개발 동향 - 대구경북지역 업체를 대상으로 -)

  • The purpose of this study was to examine the development trend of smart fiber by textile companies in Daegu/North Gyeongsang Province. This examination includes the development fields of smart fiber, investment size, information sources and the use degree of those, research-related infrastructure, relationship between companies' characteristics and their interests in smart fiber. Research data were collected by a survey. The definition and classification(4 areas and 12 development products) of smart fiber followed ones of Smart Fiber Technology Roadmap by the Ministry of Commerce, Industry and Energy. Data were analyzed using SPSS 11.0 program for frequency, means, t-test, and $X^2$-test. Among respondents, the numbers of dying and finish companies and export traders were the highest. It revealed that 19.6% of companies were developing smart fibers. Within 12 development products, vapor permeable/waterproof fiber showed to be most being developed, while medical fiber for human has not been developed and wasn't made an investment plan for developing. It was discovered that the biggest problem of smart fiber development was the lack of experts and the best outcome of smart fiber development was preoccupation of future market. It showed that companies got information from textile fairs but didn't often use information sources. The companies appeared to have a weak intention about research of smart fiber. The more important a company considered functionality of textile products and the more innovative and stabler the company was, the higher interest in smart fiber companies had. It was concluded that textile companies in Daegu/North Gyeongsang Province were aware of the importance of smart fiber development but they were not strongly interested in it and not enthusiastic in taking action on it.

The Style of Bobos Represented in Modern Fashion (현대 패션에 나타낸 보보스 스타일 -2001년부터 2003년까지의 컬렉션을 중심으로-)

  • The purpose of this study is to know outer and inner characteristics of Bobos style regarded the latest fashion and to estimate the characteristics of fashion trend in 21st century and direction of fashion in the future, In terms of contentions of this study, we firstly studied concept, background, general characteristics which had been introduced in Sociology. And then, we studied the effect which the style of Bobos had been given by investigating the concept and style of Hippies and Yuppies. Also, we analysed trend of Bobos represented in modem fashion and tried to examine outer and inner features of Bobos through the result of analysis. Bobos can defined as 'Bourgeois Bohemian' who have both mundane desire about success and are high-educated elite class in information-oriented society. The fashion styles which had affected Bobos were psychedelic, naturalism, unisex, ethnic, layered, grunge of Hippies in 1960s and traditional, power-look, contemporary-look, sports wear, casual wear of Yuppies in 1980s. As a result of examining features of Bobos style, we can know that outer feature of Bobos style showed a reasonable harmony regardless of formalities and inner features showed a tendency to seek comforts. Also, Bobos style showed various and free styles, textile materials and colors and complex features to transcend the time and region, and culture.

A Study on the Characteristics and Strategies of the Living Business of Fashion Brands (패션 브랜드의 리빙 분야 사업특성과 전략)

  • The home furnishing and living market is growing because of the increasing interest of consumers in living spaces. In this trend, global fashion companies are seeking to increase sales by expanding their businesses by launching their own home lines or brands early, taking advantage of the various advantages of each brand. In response, this study was designed to examine the strategies necessary for domestic fashion brands to pursue their business in the future by conducting a case study and characteristics analysis of the living brands of foreign fashion companies in line with the trend of expanding their living-related businesses. The following is an analysis of the characteristics of the living brands of global fashion companies. First of all, utilizing the brand awareness of fashion companies; second, the strength of unique textile designs; and third, the expansion of synergy through the expansion of the business into various fields. Fourth, the lack of diversification in materials suitable for living products; fifth, the lack of information on quality; sixth, the lack of space and contents for living areas. Finally, a living brand strategy of a domestic fashion company was proposed as follows. First, it proposed collaboration with textile design companies and designers; second, it proposed exploring business models through the inclusion of brand licenses; and third, it proposed expanding the planning of living products of private brand by distribution companies.

The Study concerning the Process of Textile Planning for Domestic Textile Converter (국내 소재 컨버터의 소재 기획 프로세스에 대한 연구)

  • The purpose of this paper was to figure out the status quo of development of textiles in fashion industry by analyzing through in-depth interview with domestic women's wear converters on the process of textile planning. Professionals in top3 domestic women's wear converters were selected and interviewed in-depth on actual work process of textile development. The result of the research is as follows. First, the interviewed converters were having transactions with entire domestic target market of women's clothing and also exporting to China. Second, production of textile was mostly domestic, with some from China. Third, the number of textile development was 20 - 50 items per season accordingly to size of converter, and the number was larger if taking into account the sourcing development, the special finished fabric development and the print design development. Fourth, for methods to gather information, converters got ideas through overseas exhibitions, overseas color swatch books, fashion-related web sites and market research. Fifth, when setting up direction of textiles, it was investigated that they had motif from in-trend material or on previous season's best-selling material. Sixth, textile planning map did not start from early in season but prefers in-progress board map. Seventh, ways for many method types for textile planning were found depending on sales type of converter and textile production price.

Development of an Expert System for Optimum Fusible Interlining (최적의 접착심지 선정을 위한 전문가시스템 개발)

  • In this research, an expert system has been developed to select optimum well-matched fusible interlinings with a face fabric. First, a database of face fabrics and fusible interlinings has been constructed. And knowledge acquisition has been performed from the previous studies about the properties of fusible interlinings and fused composites as well as fusing prsocess quality control. Then, a rule-based knowledge-base has been constructed through knowledge classification. Finally, we have constructed an inference engine with the knowledge-base. The expert system enables us to easily select optimum fusible interlinings for a face fabric considering high quality fused composites and fashion trend.

Fashion Textile Planning by Eco-friendly Fabrics with Traditional Pattern (전통문양과 친환경소재를 활용한 패션소재기획)

  • Now in the 21st century, all the industries in our world are rapidly changing, including fashion trends and customers' needs as well. Fashion textile planning is also developing towards the direction where it could satisfy the merged sensitivity and incentive of the customers through an idea. The purpose of this study is to accentuate the importance of fashion material planning in fitting conventional patterns and eco-benign fabric materials. Accordingly, this study is mainly focused on the reflection of fabric planning characteristics to show tradition containing comfort and naturalness. As mixing with established fabrics and blending with natural/functional fabrics, and conforming to the trend of the seasonal fabric, it has developed a new structure and pattern by changing the basic source of traditional patterns to a computer aided design system. Therefore, four different types of items were basically up-graded by fitting it in with traditional patterns.

  • This paper discusses the inter fiber cohesion in man made and blended yarns. The fiber parameters such as fiber length and fineness influence the cohesion. Studies have been focused on polyester and viscose spun yarns. Though polyester and viscose yarns show similar trend in cohesion, viscose yarns exhibit better cohesion clue to their serrated cross section. Studies on the effect of blend proportion of polyester cotton and polyester viscose yarns reveal that increase of polyester and viscose in the respective blends improve the inter fiber cohesion.

  • This paper is a study on the 'primitivism' which is constantly being applied on modem and contemporary textile design as a aItanative expression of the serious environmental phenomena of materialism. Starting with the analyzation of the 'concept of primitivism' , this paper is to research the 'origin of primitivism' which was first recognized by the modem artists. Primitivism on modem textile design will be suggested through 'trend terms'. The purpose of this paper is to be a basic material source for the creative development in design as well as to be of help in development of theoretical the study on contemporary textile design.
