  • The superimposed text in video brings important semantic clues into content analysis. In this paper, we present the new and fast superimposed text localization method in video segments. We detect the superimposed text by using temporal information contained in the video. To detect the superimposed text fast, we have minimized the candidate region of localizing superimposed texts by using the difference between consecutive frames. Experimental results are presented to demonstrate the good performance of the new superimposed text localization algorithm.

  • For the applications like video indexing, text understanding, and automatic captions localization system, real-time localization of captions is an essential task. This paper presents a algorithm for localization of captions in MPEG compression images based on I frame. In this algorithm, caption text regions are segmented from background images using their distinguishing texture characteristics and chrominance information. Unlike previously published algorithms which fully decompress the video sequence before extracting the text regions, this algorithm locates candidate caption text region directly in the DCT compressed domain.

  • In steel making production line, steel slabs are given a unique identification number. This identification number, Slab management number(SMN), gives information about the use of the slab. Identification of SMN has been done by humans for several years, but this is expensive and not accurate and it has been a heavy burden on the workers. Consequently, to improve efficiency, automatic recognition system is desirable. Generally, a recognition system consists of text localization, text extraction, character segmentation, and character recognition. For exact SMN identification, all the stage of the recognition system must be successful. In particular, the text localization is great important stage and difficult to process. However, because of many text-like patterns in a complex background and high fuzziness between the slab and background, directly extracting text region is difficult to process. If the slab region including SMN can be detected precisely, text localization algorithm will be able to be developed on the more simple method and the processing time of the overall recognition system will be reduced. This paper describes about the slab region localization using SIFT(Scale Invariant Feature Transform) features in the image. First, SIFT algorithm is applied the captured background and slab image, then features of two images are matched by Nearest Neighbor(NN) algorithm. However, correct matching rate can be low when two images are matched. Thus, to remove incorrect match between the features of two images, geometric locations of the matched two feature points are used. Finally, search rectangle method is performed in correct matching features, and then the top boundary and side boundaries of the slab region are determined. For this processes, we can reduce search region for extraction of SMN from the slab image. Most cases, to extract text region, search region is heuristically fixed [1][2]. However, the proposed algorithm is more analytic than other algorithms, because the search region is not fixed and the slab region is searched in the whole image. Experimental results show that the proposed algorithm has a good performance.

  • We present a new text localization method in images using a multi-layer perceptron(MLP) and a multiple continuously adaptive mean shift (MultiCAMShift) algorithm. An automatically constructed MLP-based texture classifier generates a text probability image for various types of images without an explicit feature extraction. The MultiCAMShift algorithm, which operates on the text probability Image produced by an MLP, can place bounding boxes efficiently without analyzing the texture properties of an entire image.

  • In this paper, the stroke-based text extraction algorithm for digital video is proposed. The proposed algorithm consists of four stages such as text detection, text localization, text segmentation and geometric verification. The text detection stage ascertains that a given frame in a video sequence contains text. This procedure is accomplished by morphological operations for the pixels with higher possibility of being stroke-based text, which is called as seed points. For the text localization stage, morphological operations for the edges including seed points ate adopted followed by horizontal and vortical projections. Text segmentation stage is to classify projected areas into text and background regions according to their intensity distribution. Finally, in the geometric verification stage, the segmented area are verified by using prior knowledge of video text characteristics.

  • In this paper, we present a technique to extract the title areas from book cover images. A typical book cover image may contain text, pictures, diagrams as well as complex and irregular background. In addition, the high variability of character features such as thickness, font, position, background and tilt of the text also makes the text extraction task more complicated. Therefore, we propose a two steps efficient method that uses Histogram of Oriented Gradients and color information to find the title areas. Firstly, text localization is carried out to find the title candidates. Finally, refinement process is performed to find the sufficient components of title areas. To obtain the best result, we also use other constraints about the size, ratio between the length and width of the title. We achieve encouraging results of extracted title regions from book cover images which prove the advantages and efficiency of the proposed method.

  • This paper proposes a new approach to eliminate the reflectance component for the localization of text in natural scene images. Natural scene images normally have an illumination component as well as a reflectance component. It is well known that a reflectance component usually obstructs the task of detecting and recognizing objects like texts in the scene, since it blurs out an overall image. We have developed an approach that efficiently removes reflectance components while Preserving illumination components. We decided whether an input image hits Normal or Polarized for determining the light environment, using the histogram which consisted of a red component. In the normal image, we acquired the text region without additional processing. Otherwise we removed light reflecting from the object using homomorphic filtering in the polarized image. And then this decided the each text region based on the color merging technique and the Saliency Map. Finally, we localized text region on these two candidate regions.

  • A protein's subcellular localization is considered an essential part of the description of its associated biomolecular phenomena. As the volume of biomolecular reports has increased, there has been a great deal of research on text mining to detect protein subcellular localization information in documents. It has been argued that linguistic information, especially syntactic information, is useful for identifying the subcellular localizations of proteins of interest. However, previous systems for detecting protein subcellular localization information used only shallow syntactic parsers, and showed poor performance. Thus, there remains a need to use a full syntactic parser and to apply deep linguistic knowledge to the analysis of text for protein subcellular localization information. In addition, we have attempted to use semantic information from the WordNet thesaurus. To improve performance in detecting protein subcellular localization information, this paper proposes a three-step method based on a full syntactic dependency parser and WordNet thesaurus. In the first step, we constructed syntactic dependency paths from each protein to its location candidate, and then converted the syntactic dependency paths into dependency trees. In the second step, we retrieved root information of the syntactic dependency trees. In the final step, we extracted syn-semantic patterns of protein subtrees and location subtrees. From the root and subtree nodes, we extracted syntactic category and syntactic direction as syntactic information, and synset offset of the WordNet thesaurus as semantic information. According to the root information and syn-semantic patterns of subtrees from the training data, we extracted (protein, localization) pairs from the test sentences. Even with no biomolecular knowledge, our method showed reasonable performance in experimental results using Medline abstract data. Our proposed method gave an F-measure of 74.53% for training data and 58.90% for test data, significantly outperforming previous methods, by 12-25%.
