  • Condition for fresh storage of tiger puffer in the liquid state were investigated in several experiments. When marine fish ringer solution and 1% NaCl were used as the diluent for the short-term preservation method, spermatozoa activity index (SAI) and survival rate showed the best result among the various diluents tested. The dilution rate for the shortterm preservation of spermatozoa was suitable between 3 and 5 times with the 1% NaCi diluent. The appropriate range of temperature for the short-term preservation showed between 0 and $5^{\circ}C$. In order to keep high SAI and survival rate of spermatozoa, antibiotic addition (800 ppm neomycin) could be suggested. These results indicated that the short-term preservation method could be employed in tiger puffer spermatozoa.

  • This paper describes the dynamic characteristics depending on installation condition between a pantograph and an OCL (Overhead Contact Line) on a new high speed line in Korea. The current collection performance between the pantograph and the OCL was tested during train operation from Suseo to Jije stations. The current collection performance is evaluated based on the duration of an arc by using an arcing measurement system. The system consists of an optical sensor for measuring the duration of an arc and a camera for monitoring current collection performance. An arcing duration is defined as a percentage of arcing in international standards. This test aims to analyze the locations of repetitive arcing depending on installation conditions of OCLs on a new high speed line in order to use the result as reference data for correct construction and maintenance.

  • PVC hose for gas is used widely in many of places which is used for connector between combustor and gas cock. In this study, it is collected by 5 regional area as Gyeonggi, Jeonnam, Gyeongbuk, Jeju and Gangwon and tested in leakage, hardness, anti-low temperature. As a result, the color on it is started to change rapidly when it is installed. Some of specimen are broken in bending test after keeping in $-25^{\circ}C$, 24hours. It's hardness has a tendency to increase gradually. If hardness of hose is increased, PVC hose is separated easily from cock or combustor so that LP gas or city gas can be escaped. For prevention of gas leakage accidents of PVC hose, the available period of it should be presented.

  • In many parts of the world, reinforced concrete (RC) buildings, designed and built in accordance with older codes, have suffered severe damage or even collapse as a result of recent near-fault earthquakes. This is particularly due to the deficiencies of most of the older (and even some of the recent) codes in dealing with near fault events. In this study, a tested three-storey frame designed for gravity loads only was selected to represent those deficient buildings. Nonlinear time history analyses were performed, followed by damage assessment procedures. The results were compared with experimental observation of the same frame showing a good match. Damage and fragility analyses of the frame subjected to 204 pulse-type motions were then performed using a selected damage model and inter-storey drifts. The results showed that the frame located in near-fault regions is extremely vulnerable to ground motions. The results also showed that the damage model better captures the damage distribution in the frame than inter-storey drifts. The first storey was identified as the most fragile and the inner columns of the first storey suffered most damage as indicated by the damage index. The findings would be helpful in the decision making process prior to the strengthening of buildings in near-fault regions.

  • The piezoelectric transverse $d_{15}$ shear sensing mechanism is firstly assessed experimentally for a cantilever smart sandwich plate made of a piezoceramic axially poled patched core and glass fiber reinforced polymer composite faces. Different electrical connections are tested for the assessment of the sensor performance under a varying amplitude harmonic (at 24 Hz) force. Also, the dynamic response of the smart sandwich composite structure is monitored using different acquisition devices. The obtained experimentally sensed voltages are compared to those resulting from the benchmark three-dimensional piezoelectric coupled finite element simulations using a commercial code where realistic features, like equipotential conditions on the patches' electrodes and mechanical updating of the clamp, are considered. Numerically, it is found that the stiffness of the clamp, which is much softer than the ideal one, has an enormous influence on the sensed voltage of its adjacent patch; therefore, sensing with the patch on the free side would be more advantageous for a cantilever configuration. Apart from confirming the latter result, the plate benchmark experimental assessment showed that the parallel connection of its two oppositely poled patches has a moderate performance but better than the clamp side patch acting as an individual sensor.

  • Hardware-in-the-loop (HiL) simulation is a very powerful tool to design, test and verify automotive control systems. However, well-validated and high degree of freedom vehicle models have to be utilized in these simulations in order to obtain realistic results. In this paper, a vehicle dynamics model developed in the Carsim Real Time program environment and its validation has been performed using experimental results. The developed Carsim real time model has been employed in the Tofas R&D hardware-in-the-loop simulator. Experimental and hardware-in-the-loop simulation results have been compared for the standard FMVSS No. 126 test and the results have been found to be in good agreement with each other. Two electronic stability control (ESC) algorithms, named the Basic ESC and the Integrated ESC, taken from the earlier work of the authors have been tested and evaluated in the hardware-in-the-loop simulator. Different evaluation methods have been formulated and used to compare these ESC algorithms. As a result, the Integrated ESC system has been shown superior performance as compared to the Basic ESC algorithm.

  • Stabilization of clayey soil has been studied from past to present by mixing different additives to the soil to increase its strength and durability. In recent years, there has been an increasing interest in stabilization of soils with natural pozzolans. Despite this, very few studies have investigated the impact of pozzolanic additives under freeze-thaw cycling. This paper presents the results of an experimental research study on the durability behavior of clayey soils treated with lime and perlite. For this purpose, soil was stabilized with 6% lime content by weight of dry soil (optimum lime ratio of the the soil), perlite was mixed with it in 0%, 5%, 10%, 20%, 25% and 30% proportions. Test specimens were compacted in the laboratory and cured for 7, 28 and 84 days, after which they were tested for unconfined compression tests. In addition to this, they were subjected to 12 closed system freeze-thaw cycles after curing for 28 days. The results show that the addition of perlite as a pozzolanic additive to lime stabilized soil improves the strength and durability. Unconfined compressive strength increases with increased perlite content. The findings indicate that using natural pozzolan which is cheaper than lime, has positive effect in strength and durability of soils and can result cost reduction of stabilization.

  • Vibrations of a wind turbine blade have a negative impact on its performance and result in failure of the blade, therefore an approach to effectively control vibration in turbine blades are sought by wind industry. The small domestic horizontal axis wind turbine blades induce flap wise (out-of-plane) vibration, due to varying wind speeds. These flap wise vibrations are transferred to the structure, which even causes catastrophic failure of the system. Shape memory alloys which possess physical property of variable stiffness across different phases are embedded into the composite blades for active vibration control. Previously Shape memory alloys have been used as actuators to change their angles and orientations in fighter jet blades but not used for active vibration control for wind turbine blades. In this work a GFRP blade embedded with Shape Memory Alloy (SMA) and tested for its vibrational and material damping characteristics, under martensitic and austenite conditions. The embedment portrays 47% reduction in displacement of blade, with respect to the conventional blade. An analytical model for the actuated smart blade is also proposed, which validates the harmonic response of the smart blade.
