The Behavior of the Term Structure of Interest Rates with the Markov Regime Switching Models (마코프 국면전환을 고려한 이자율 기간구조 연구)

  • This study examines a cointegrated vector autoregressive (VAR) model where parameters are subject to switch across the regimes in the term structure of interest rates. To employ the regime switching framework, the Markov-switching vector error correction model (MS-VECM) is allowed to the regime shifts in the vector of intercept terms, the variance-covariance terms, the error correction terms, and the autoregressive coefficient parts. The corresponding approaches are illustrated using the term structure of interest rates in the US Treasury bonds over the period of 1958 to 2009. Throughout the modeling procedure, we find that the MS-VECM can form a statistically adequate representation of the term structure of interest rate in the US Treasury bonds. Moreover, the regime switching effects are analyzed in connection with the historical government monetary policy and with the recent global financial crisis. Finally, the results from the comparisons both in information criteria and in forecasting exercises with and without the regime switching lead us to conclude that the models in the presence of regime dependence are superior to the linear VECM model.

Analyzing the Effect of Changes in the Benchmark Policy Interest Rate Using a Term Structure Model (이자율 기간구조를 이용한 정책금리 변경의 효과 분석)

  • This paper estimates the term structure of interest rates with the setup of 3-factor no arbitrage model and investigates the trend of term premia and the effectiveness of changes in policy interest rates. The term premia are found to be high in a three-year medium term objective, which can be interpreted as reflecting the recognition of investors who expect a higher uncertainty in real activities for the coming three years than for a longer term. Then, in order to look into the effect of policy interest rates after the recent change of benchmark interest rate, this paper analyzes the effects of the changes in short-term interest rates of the financial market on the yield curve of the bond market at time of change. Empirical results show that the discrepancy between call rate, short-term rate in money market, and instantaneous short rate, short-term rate in the bond market, is found to be significantly widened, comparing to the periods before the change in benchmark interest rate. It is not easy to conclude clearly for now whether such a widening gap is caused by the lack of experiences with managing new benchmark interest rate or is just an exceptional case due to the recent turmoil in the global financial market. However, monetary policy needs to be operated in a manner that could reduce the gap to enhance its effectiveness.

  • HJM representation of the term structure of interest rates sometimes produces the negative interest rates with positive probability. This paper shows that the condition of positive interest rates can be derived from the jump diffusion process, if a proper positive martingale process with the compensated jump process is chosen. As in Flesaker and Hughston, the condition is incorporated into the bond price process.

  • Since the term structure of interest rates (TSIR) has longitudinal data, we should consider as input variables both time left to maturity and time simultaneously to get a more useful and more efficient function estimation. However, since the resulting data set becomes very large, we need to develop a fast and reliable estimation method for large data set. Furthermore, it tends to overestimate TSIR because data are correlated. To solve these problems we propose a mixture of weighted least squares support vector machines. We recognize that the estimate is well smoothed and well explains effects of the third stock market crash in USA through applying the proposed method to the US Treasury bonds data.

  • It has been interested in developing useful information variables that are able to predict the future movement of final objects to attain the specific policy and strategic target. Term structure of interest rates is known as an important variable to predict future business and economic activity, yet there is little empirical work on the predictability of future changes in real output. This study attempts to develop the statistical model and examine whether domestic term structure of interest rates can predict variations of future cumulative changes in real growth on a long time horizon.

  • Empirical findings on interet rate dynamics imply that short rates show some long memories and non-Markovin. It is well-known that fractional Brownian motion(fBm) is a proper candidate for modelling this empirical phenomena. fBm, however, is not a semimartingale process. For this reason, it is very hard to apply such processes for asset price modelling. With some modifications, this paper investigate the fBm interest rate theory, and obtain a pure discount bond price and Greeks.

Impacts of US Monetary Policy on Domestic Bond and FX Swap Markets (미국 통화정책이 국내 채권 및 외환스왑시장에 미치는 영향)

  • Given the US dollar's status as a global safe haven, global factors, such as US monetary policy, may have considerable impacts on financial markets in other countries. Regarding such hypothesis, this paper looked at the impacts of US monetary policy on domestic bond and FX swap markets through an event study. According to our analysis, US monetary policy had significant positive impacts on domestic interest rates. In particular, it turned out to have bigger impacts on long-term products with high term premiums. By period, the correlation between US monetary policy and domestic interest rates was not significant before the financial crisis, but was clearly positive after the crisis. The US conventional monetary policy was seen to have big impacts on short-term and medium-term KTB yields, while its unconventional monetary policy had major impacts on long-term KTB yields. Moreover, FX swap rates reacted very sensitively to US monetary policy shocks before the financial crisis, while they did not show any significant reactions after the crisis. This suggests that, in line with the covered interest rate parity, the impact of US monetary policy shocks was transmitted to domestic financial markets mainly through swap rate adjustments before the global financial crisis, but through the changes in domestic interest rates during the post-crisis period.

Macro-Economic Factors Affecting the Vietnam Stock Price Index: An Application of the ARDL Model

  • Using the ARDL approach, this study examined the impact of macro factors on Vietnam's stock market in the short and long run from 2010 to 2021. The State Bank of Vietnam and the International Monetary Fund provided time series data for this study. Research results show that in the long run, money supply and exchange rate respectively affect the stock market. The money supply had a positive effect on the VN-Index, while the exchange rate showed the opposite effect. However, the study did not find a relationship between world oil price and interest rates on VN-Index in the long run. On the other hand, in the short term, there are relationships between variables; specifically, interest rates and exchange rates have a negative impact on the VN-Index, while the world oil price and the fluctuation of money supply M2 of the previous one and two months showed an impact in the same direction on this index. The differences in the regression results on the impact of exchange rate and oil price on the VN-Index compared to previous studies come from the characteristics of Vietnam's stock market, with the large capitalization of companies in the oil and gas sector, and the structure of Vietnam's economy with export heavily depends on FDI sector.

  • The fundamental tenn structure model is based on the modelling of the short rate. It is well-known that the short rate depends on the interest rate policy of monetary authorities, especially on the official rate. Babbs and Webber(1994) modelled the tenn structure of interest rates using the official rate. They assume that the official rate follows a jump process. This reflects that the official rate infrequently changes. In this paper, we test this official tenn structure model and compare the jump-diffusion model with the pure diffusion model.

Analyzing Expected Inflation Based on a Term Structure Model: A Case of Korea (이자율모형을 이용한 우리나라 기대인플레이션의 추정 및 특징)

  • This paper estimates and characterizes expected inflations using an affine term structure model based on the empirical stochastic process of the interest rates in Korea. The empirical results show that the expected inflation which marked above 4% before the global financial crisis has dampened and stabilized after the crisis. Moreover, we investigate the rationality of the various expected inflation measures in terms of the unbiasedness and efficiency and find that unbiasedness is not rejected across the all measures, while the efficiency cannot be empirically warranted. Besides, we run Granger causality tests and conclude that the expected inflations compiled from the Consensus, BOK-Expert have the cross-causality with the long-run actual inflation, while the expected inflation estimated from the term structure model has the cross-causality with the short-run actual inflation. These results connote that expected inflations collected from different sources and methods have their targets and horizons and the central bank needs to watch all of them with a balanced view instead of preferring one to the other.
