Background Extensive degloving injuries of the extremities usually result in necrosis of the flap, necessitating comprehensive skin grafting. Provided there is a sufficient tool to evaluate flap viability, full-thickness skin can be used from a nonviable avulsed flap. We used a Wood's lamp to determine the viability of avulsed flaps in the operation field after intravenous injection of fluorescein dye. Methods We experienced 13 cases during 16 months. Fifteen minutes after the intravenous injection of fluorescein dye, the avulsed skin flaps were examined and non-fluorescent areas were marked under Wood's lamp illumination. The marked area was defatted for full-thickness skin grafting. The fluorescent areas were sutured directly without tension. The non-fluorescent areas were covered by defatted skin. Several days later, there was soft tissue necrosis within the flap area. We measured necrotic area and revised the flap. Results Among all the cases, necrotic area was 21.3% of the total avulsed area. However, if we exclude three cases, one of a carelessly managed patient and two cases of the flaps were inappropriately applied, good results were obtained, with a necrotic area of only 8.4%. Eight patients needed split-thickness skin grafts, and heel pad reconstruction was performed with free flap. Conclusions A full-thickness skin graft from an avulsed flap is a good method for addressing aesthetic concerns without producing donor site morbidity. Fluorescein dye is a useful, simple, and cost-effective tool for evaluating flap viability. Avulsed flap injuries can be managed well with Wood's lamp illumination and a full-thickness skin graft.
In order to replace existing slit type steel plate on the wooden structure joint, the FRP-reinforced laminated plates were produced. Four types of FRP-reinforced laminated plates were produced according to the type of reinforcement and adhesive, and before applying to the joint, the adhesion performance test according to KSF 3021 and KSF 2160 and the Compact Tension (CT) type fracture toughness test specified in ASTM D5045-99 were carried out. As a result of adhesion performance test, all GFRP textile, GFRP sheet, and GFRP Textile-Sheet type FRP-reinforced laminated plates satisfied the requirement of soaking delamination percentage with smaller than 5% based on KS standard. However, aramid type specimen satisfied the standard as the soaking delamination percentage of 4.8% but it did not satisfied the standard as the water proof soaking delamination percentage of 70%. As a result of fracture toughness test, the volume ratio of reinforcement to timber became 23% so that the strength of FRP-reinforced laminated plates increased by two to four times in comparison to the control specimen. It was confirmed that the GFRP Textile-Sheet type specimen was most resistant to the fracture most since the ratio of stress intensity factor compared with that of the control increased to 61% owing to the parallel arrangement of glass fiber to the load. As a result of tensile shear strength test using FRP-reinforced laminated plates and nonmetal dowels, it is about 12% lower than metal connectors.
The pre-air-drying of Korean pine before the high-temperature and low-humidity drying was shown to be effective in uniform moisture content distribution and prevention of surface check. Our results suggest that initial moisture content of the timber also plays important role in high-temperature and low-humidity drying method. The pre-air-drying also helps in the reduction of surface checks in Korean pine when compared to the Korean pine dried by only high-temperature and low-humidity. End-coating was not effective in the prevention of twist, shrinkage, case hardening and internal checks. The pre-air-drying reduces the internal tension stresses which occur during high-temperature and low-humidity drying thus decreasing case hardening and also preventing internal checks. The pre-air-drying decreases the moisture content and causes shrinkage which leads to increased twist in the Korean pine.
Structural glued laminated timbers were manufactured from Japanese larch(Larix leptolepis) lumber. The effect of various factors, such as finger joint, strength of lamination, on the strength properties of glulam was investigated. When only MOE of lamina was used as input variable for the estimation of strength properties of glulam, the deviations between actual and simulated results were increased with the number of lamination, because the effects of variance of lamina properties on the strength estimation of glulam were cumulated with the number of lamination. Therefore, to estimate the MOR of glulam more careful approach was needed. Besides, both MOE and MOR of lamination were used as input variable to compare the effect of input variable. In the case of finger jointed lamination was located in tension zone, MOE of glulam was some effected, because of the variation of MOE of lamination and the deficiency of information for knot. In the case of finger jointed lamination wasn't located in tension zone, more exact estimation was possible than the case of finger jointed lamination was located in tension zone. From the results, it was concluded that more exact estimation of strength properties of glulam could be obtained by considering effects of both finger joint and knot.
An evaluation of bending test of composite I and Box beams for determining the ultimate strength limit design criteria was presented. Maxium loads of composite I beams were found in beams composed of thicker upper flanges and/or vertical LVL flanges. These loads of plywood web beams were greater than those of PB web beams. Maximum loads of unsymmetrical box beams were less than those of symmetrical box beams. Thus, it took on different phase in box type beams. Ultimate loads of composite beams were greater than those of solid. The failure of composite beams were abrupt and failure mode was classified into following categories; Edgewise shear failure in web, delamination in flange-web joint, tension failure and tearing in LVL flanges, and web delamination. These failures of composite beams were appeared at the mixed mode. The influence factor affecting the performance of tested composite beams was shear strength of PB-web composite beams and compressive strength in plywood-web composite beams. It was also assumed that the influence factors on structural performance on composite beams were flange quality, web material and geometry of cross section. As one of the design methods resisting to compressive stress that was required in the case of small span to depth ratio and deep beams. composite I-beams composed of thicker upper flanges comparing to lower flanges were very effective in structural performance.
Because Japanese cedar shows lower mechanical performance, glued-laminated timber (glulam) can be a better way to utilize Japanese cedar for structural purpose. However, low yield of higher grade lamination from log makes it difficult to design structural glulam. This study was aimed to increase the yield of higher grade lamination and provide higher efficiency of manufacturing structural lamination by ultrasonic log sorting technology. Logs were sorted by an existing log grading rule regulated by Korea Forest Research Institute (KFRI). It was found that the KFRI log grading rule contributed to finding better logs in viewpoint of the volumetric yield and it can reduce the number of rejected lumber by visual grading. However, it could not identify better logs to produce higher-grade products. To find an appropriate log-sorting-method for structural products, log diameter and ultrasonic time of flight (TOF) for the log were considered as factors to affect mechanical performance of resulting products. However, it was found that influence of log diameter on mechanical performance of resulting products was very small. The TOF showed a possibility to sort logs by mechanical performance of resulting products even though a coefficient of correlation was not strong (R = 0.6). In a case study, the log selection based on the ultrasonic TOF of the log increased the yield of the outermost tension lamination (E8 or better grade, KS F 3021) from 2.6% to 12.5% and reduced LTE5 (lower than E5 grade) lamination from 43.6% to 10.3%, compared with the existing KFRI log grading rule.
In this study, the bending behavior of cross-laminated timber (CLT) connected by nails were investigated. Especially, the load-carrying capacity of the nail-jointed CLT under out-of-plane bending was predicted by the lateral resistance of the used nails. Three-layer nail-jointed CLT specimens and a nail connection were manufactured by 30 mm (thickness) ${\times}$ 100 mm (width) domestic species (Pinus koraiensis) laminas and Ø$3.15{\times}82mm$ nails using a nail-gun. Shear test for evaluating the nail lateral resistance and bending test for evaluating the load-carrying capacity of the nail-jointed CLT under out-of-plane bending were carried out. As a result, two lateral resistance of the used nail, the 5% fastener offset value and the maximum value, were 913 N and 1,534 N, respectively. The predicted load-carrying capacity of the nail-jointed CLT by the 5% offset nail lateral resistance was similar to the yield points on the actual load-displacement curve of the nail-jointed CLT specimens. Meanwhile, the nail-jointed CLT specimens were not failed until the tension failure of the bottom laminas occurred beyond the maximum lateral resistance of the nails. Thus, the measured maximum load carrying capacities of the nail-jointed CLT specimens, approximately 12,865 N, were higher than the predicted values, 7,986 N, by the maximum nail lateral resistance. This indicates that the predicted load-carrying capacity can be used for designing a structural unit such as floor, wall and roof able to support vertical loads in a viewpoint of predicting the actual capacities more safely.
The lateral strength test of bending type was done to investigate the lateral capacity of the double bolt connection of domestic larix glulam according to bolt spacing. In the shear specimen, which is bolted connection in the inserted plate type, the hole of bolt was made, changing the diameter of bolt (12 mm and 16 mm), the number of bolt (single bolt : control and double bolt), the direction of bolt row (in parallel to grain : Type-A and in perpendicular to grain : Type-B) and the bolt spacing (Type-A : 4 d and 7 d and Type-B : 3 d and 5 d). Lateral capacity and failure mode of bolt connection were compared according to conditions. In prototype design (KBCS, 2000), the reduction factor of the allowable shear resistance that the bolt spacing is reduced was calculated. The results were as follows. 1) Bearing stress per bolt in the single and double bolt connection of Type-A was directly proportional to bolt diameter and bolt spacing. Bearing stress of Type-B decreased as bolt diameter was increased, and decreased by 2~10% when bolt diameter was increased. 2) In the single bolt connection and the double bolt connection of Type-A, the splitted failure was formed in the edge direction. When the bolt spacing was 3 d in Type-B, bolt was yielded more in the part of tension than in the part of compression, and the splitted failure started at the bolt in the part of tension. In the 5 d spacing specimen, the bolt in the part of tension was yielded similarly to bolt in the part of compression, and the splitted failure started in the part of compression. 3) In the prototype design, the reduction factor was calculated by non-dimensionizing the yielding load in the standard of bolt spacing (Type A : 7 d and Type B : 5 d). In 12 mm bolt connection, the reduction factor of bolt spacing 4 d (type-A) and single bolt connection was 0.87 and 0.55, respectively, and the reduction factor of bolt spacing 3 d (Type-B) and single bolt connection was 0.91 and 0.55, respectively. In 16 mm bolt connection, the reduction factor of bolt spacing 4 d (type-A) and single bolt connection was 0.96 and 0.76, respectively, and the reduction factor of bolt spacing 3 d (Type-B) and single bolt connection was 0.91 and 0.77, respectively.
Shearing strength test in tension type was investigated to determine the shear resistance of bolt and drift-pin connection of domestic larix glulam. The specimen was connected with bolt and drift-pin in the inserted plate type, and only bolt in the side plate type. The diameter of bolt and drift-pin used in the experiment are 12, 16 and 20 mm. The hole of bolt was drilled at the end-distance 5 d and 7 d. Tension load was loaded in the direction parallel to grain. The shear resistance was evaluated according to end-distance through this, the yield load was compared with the experimental yield load, using Larsen's formula. The prototype design strength is based on the yield load of end-distance 7 d and the reduction factor of end-distance 5 d was calculated. The results were as follows. 1. The average of maximum load of drift-pin connection was higher by 3~30% at the inserted type than at bolt connection with increasing diameter. In bolt connection, the average of maximum load of the side type was 1.54~2.07 times higher than that of the inserted type. In the same diameter, the average of maximum load of end-distance 7 d was higher by 8~44% than that of 5 d. 2. The bearing stress was 1.16~1.41 times higher at the inserted connection than at drift-pin connection, and 1.37~1.86 times higher at 7 d than at 5 d. Also, when the slenderness ratio was below 7.5 at drift-pin connection and below 6.0 at inserted connection, the lateral capacity was good. 3. The ratio of the experimental yield load and the predicted yield load calculated by Larsen's formula proposed by Larsen was 0.80~1.10 at inserted connection, and 0.75~1.46 at side connection. 4. When the inserted bolt connection was based on the yield load of end-distance 7 d, the reduction factor was 0.89 at 12 mm connection, 0.93 at 16 mm and 0.85 at 20 mm. The reduction factor was 0.89 at 12 mm the inserted drift-pin connection, 0.93 at 16 mm, 0.93 at 20 mm. The reduction factor was 0.79 at the side connection of the 12 mm bolt connection and 0.80 at 16 mm.
