Both tensile and tear properties of short-fiber reinforced Chloroprene rubber have been studied as functions of the fiber aspect ratio and fiber content. Both properties increased when both the fiber aspect ratio and fiber content were increased. The fiber reinforced rubbers exhibited maximum values of these properties at a fiber aspect ratio of about 300. When the fiber aspect ratio exceeds 400, the mechanical properties decreased with the fiber content because of the non-uniform dispersion of fibers. The tensile modulus was compared with the prediction by the Halpin-Tsai equations for randomly oriented cases. A bonding agent was used in the fiber treating process. It was found that the ultimate tensile strength, torque, tearing energy and tensile modulus of the rubbers with treated fibers were much higher than those with untreated ones.
The Brazilian test has been widely used to determine the indirect tensile strength of rock, concrete and other brittle materials. The basic assumption for the calculation formula of Brazilian tensile strength is that the elastic moduli of rock are the same both in tension and compression. However, the fact is that the elastic moduli in tension and compression of most rocks are different. Thus, the formula of Brazilian tensile strength under the assumption of isotropy is unreasonable. In the present study, we conducted Brazilian tests on flat disk-shaped rock specimens and attached strain gauges at the center of the disc to measure the strains of rock. A tension-compression bi-modular model is proposed to interpret the data of the Brazilian test. The relations between the principal strains, principal stresses and the ratio of the compressive modulus to tensile modulus at the disc center are established. Thus, the tensile and compressive moduli as well as the correct tensile strength can be estimated simultaneously by the new formulas. It is found that the tensile and compressive moduli obtained using these formulas were in well agreement with the values obtained from the direct tension and compression tests. The formulas deduced from the Brazilian test based on the assumption of isotropy overestimated the tensile strength and tensile modulus and underestimated the compressive modulus. This work provides a new methodology to estimate tensile strength and moduli of rock simultaneously considering tension-compression bi-modularity.

Deformation characteristics of miniature plate tensile specimens have been studied to develop the thickness requirement and a correlation to estimate the mechanical properties of bulk material from miniature specimen data. The material used was a SA 508 C1.3 reactor pressure vessel steel and the thicknesses of miniature tensile specimens varied from ().12 m to 2 mm. The effects of thickness on the tensile deformation properties such as strength, ductility, and necking characteristics were analyzed. The yield and ultimate tensile strengths were independent of specimen thickness when the thickness was larger than about 0.2 mm. The uniform and total elongations decreased as the specimen thickness decreased. It was also observed that the uniform strain component in the width direction decreased with decrease in the specimen thickness, however, that in the thickness direction was rather constant in total thickness range studied. Based on this observation and a relationship between the necking angle and the ratio between strain components, a correlation between the uniform elongations of miniature specimen and standard specimen was derived. The uniform elongations calculated by this new correlation agreed well with the measured values.
Through mechanical alloying, hot isostatic pressing and hot rolling, a 9%Cr Fe-based oxide dispersion-strengthened alloy sample was fabricated. The tensile strength of the alloy is significantly improved when the microstructure is modified during the post-consolidation process. The alloy samples were strengthened as the cooling rates increased, though the elongation was somewhat reduced. With a cooling rate of $800^{\circ}C/s$ after normalization at $1150^{\circ}C$, the alloy sample showed a tensile strength of 1450 MPa, which is about twice that of the hot rolled sample; however, at $600^{\circ}C$ the tensile strength dramatically decreased to 620 MPa. Optical microscope and transmission electron microscope were used to investigate the microstructural changes of the specimens. The resultant strengthening of the alloy sample could be mainly attributed to the interstitially dissolved nitrogen, the fraction of the tempered martensite, the fine grain and the presence of a smaller precipitate. The decrease in the tensile strength was mainly caused by the precipitation of vanadium-rich nitride.
The effects of the ordering reaction on high temperature mechanical behavior is investigated by tensile tests at $2{\times}10^{-2}/s-3.3{\times}10^{-5}/s$ up to $745^{\circ}C$. The tensile deformed region is examined by differential scanning calorimeter (DSC), TEM, and high resolution neutron diffraction (HRPD). The results showed that a plateau of tensile strength appeared at $150-500^{\circ}C$ whereas the elongation minimum occurred at about $600^{\circ}C$. This suggests that the occurrence of a plateau does not cause the elongation minimum. The temperature of the elongation minimum decreases with the strain rate. HRPD results show a lattice contraction in the tensile deformed specimen at the temperature of the plateau occurring region. The plateau of tensile strength, the lattice contraction, and the occurrence of serration appeared in the same temperature region.
Microstructure and mechanical properties of five Cr-Mo steels for nuclear industry applications have been investigated. Transmission electron microscopy, energy dispersive spectrometer, differential scanning calorimeter, hardness, tensile, and impact test were used to evaluate the Cr and W effect on the microstructure and mechanical properties. Microstructures of Cr-Mo steels after tempering are classified into three types : bainitic 2.25Cr-lMo steel, martensitic Mod.9Cr-lMo, HT9M, and HT9W steels, and dual phase HT9 steel. The majority of the precipitates were found to be M$_{23}$C$_{6}$ carbides. As minor phases, fine needle-like V(C,N), spherical NbC, fine needle-like Cr-rich Cr$_2$N, and Cr-rich M$_{7}$C$_3$were also found. Addition of 2wt.% W in Cr-Mo steels retarded the formation of subgrain and dissolution of Cr$_2$N precipitates. Hardness and ultimate tensile strength increased with increasing Cr content. Though Cr content of HT9W steel was lower than that of HT9 steel, the hardness of HT9W was higher due to the higher W content. W added HT9W steel had the highest ultimate tensile strength above $600^{\circ}C$. But impact toughness of W added steel (HT9W) and high Cr steel (HT9) was low.w.w.

This study is deal with the high frequency induction hardening (HF at $850^{\circ}C$, 120kHz & 50kW condition) SM45C steel. (1) The HF specimen which was tempered at $150^{\circ}C$, did not appear any tempering effect. A brittle fracture occurred at rounded area of the tensile specimen. AE amplitude distribution showed between 45~60dB. (2) The HF specimen which was tempered at $300^{\circ}C$, slip and fracture occurred at the hole area of the tensile specimen. As it passes the yield point, the AE energy increased intermittently and AE amplitude distribution showed between 70~85dB. In addition, after the maximum tensile load, it showed high amplitude and energy distribution. The AE amplitude showed between 45~70dB. (3) The HF specimen which was tempered at $450^{\circ}C$, a brittle fracture occurred as if it is torn in the direction of $45^{\circ}$ on parallel area over the both sides of the tensile specimen, which led to several peak to be appeared in AE energy. It was found that the AE amplitude was relatively low and the AE energy was high.

The study aims to investigate the influence of alloying elements(V,Ti) and heat treatment on the mechanical properties in hypo-eutectic chromium cast iron. Before heat treatment, all of the specimen were fully annealed(950$^{\circ}C{\times}5Hr$) to homogenize their structures. The influence of heat treatment and alloying elements(V,Ti) on hardness, retained austenite volume, and charpy impact energy as well as tensile strength of the specimen was tested systematically. Retained austenite decreased with the increase of V and Ti, but incresed with the increase of number of cycles. The impact energy decreased, and hardness and tensile strength increased with the increase of alloying elements (V,Ti) and the decrease of the number of cycles. The hardness and tensile strength increased, but impact energy decreased with the increase of V and Ti elements and the temperature of destabillization heat treatment. After the destabillization heat treatment at the same temperature, the impact energy is increased, while hardness and tensile strength decreased as the increase of tempering temperature. Retained austenite increased with increase of destabilizatoin heat treatment temperature, while decrease with the increase of tempering temperature.
In this study, three kinds of linepipe steels were processed by changing the amount of Mo and Nb to investigate the effects on microstructures, tensile and Charpy impact properties. All the specimens consisted of acicular ferrite, granular bainite and secondary phases such as martensite and austenite constituents (MA). The increase in Mo raised the volume fractions of the granular bainite and MA, and raised the number of fine precipitates, which increased the yield and tensile strengths and decreased the upper self energy and energy transition temperatures. In the steel having less Mo and more Nb, the volume fractions of the granular bainite and MA decreased, and a finer microstructure was observed. This microstructure suppressed the formation of separation during Charpy impact testing and led to a higher upper shelf energy and lower energy transition temperature, while the yield and tensile strengths were lower than those of the steels with more Mo and less Nb.
This paper presents a study of the tensile properties of austenitic high-manganese steel specimens with different grain sizes. Although the stacking fault energy, calculated using a modified thermodynamic model, slightly decreased with increasing grain size, it was found to vary in a range of $23.4mJ/m^2$ to $27.1mJ/m^2$. Room-temperature tensile test results indicated that the yield and tensile strengths increased; the ductility also improved as the grain size decreased. The increase in the yield and tensile strengths was primarily attributed to the occurrence of mechanical twinning, as well as to the grain refinement effect. On the other hand, the improvement of the ductility is because the formation of deformation-induced martensite is suppressed in the high-manganese steel specimen with small grain size during tensile testing. The deformation-induced martensite transformation resulting from the increased grain size can be explained by the decrease in stacking fault energy or in shear stress required to generate deformation-induced martensite transformation.
