Wind pressure is a critical argument for the wind-resistant design of structures. The attempt, however, to explore the wind pressure field on buildings still encounters challenges though a large body of researches utilizing wind tunnel tests and wind field simulations were carried out, due to the difficulty in logical treatments on the scale effect and the modeling error. The full-scale measurement has not yet received sufficient attention. By performing a field measurement, the present paper systematically addresses wind pressures on the rectangular attic of a double-tower building. The spatial and temporal correlations among wind speed and wind pressures at measured points are discussed. In order to better understand the wind pressure distribution on the attic facades and its relationship against the approaching flow, a full-scale CFD simulation on the similar rectangular attic is conducted as well. Comparative studies between wind pressure coefficients and those provided in wind-load codes are carried out. It is revealed that in the case of wind attack angle being zero, the wind pressure coefficient of the cross-wind facades exposes remarkable variations along both horizontal and vertical directions; while the wind pressure coefficient of the windward facade remains stable along horizontal direction but exposes remarkable variations along vertical direction. The pattern of wind pressure coefficients, however, is not properly described in the existing wind-load codes.

Forecasting salinity in an estuary reservoir is essential to promise irrigation water for the reclaimed land. The objective of the research was to assess salinity balance and its temporal and spatial variations in the Iwon estuary reservoir which has been issued by its high contents of salinity in spite of desalination process for four years. Seepage flows through the see dikes which could be one of possible reason of high salinity level of the reservoir was calculated based on the salinity balance in the reservoir, and used as input data for salinity modeling. A three-dimensional hydrodynamic model, Environmental Fluid Dynamics Code (EFDC), was used to simulate salinity level in the reservoir. The model was calibrated and validated based on weekly or biweekly observed salinity data from 2006 to 2010 in four different locations in the reservoir. The values of $R^2$, RMSE and RMAE between simulated and observed salinity were calculated as 0.70, 2.16 dS/m, and 1.72 dS/m for calibration period, and 0.89, 1.15 dS/m, and 0.89 dS/m for validation period, respectively, showing that simulation results was generally consistent with the observation data.

Spatial and temporal variations of sea surface temperature (SST), abundances of copepods, euphausiids, amphipods, and chaetognaths were investigated in the western waters of the Korean Peninsula. Zooplankton and SST were monitored at 63 stations arrayed in six transects ($124^{\circ}00^{\prime}-126^{\circ}30^{\prime}E$, $34^{\circ}00^{\prime}-37^{\circ}00^{\prime}N$) in February, April, June, August, October, and December during 1978-2010. In general, SST increased $0.7-3.8^{\circ}C$ during the last three decades with spatio-temporal variations. SST was lowest in February and highest in August. SST was highest in the northernmost transect and declined gradually along transects to the south. The general pattern of interannual variations of SST was similar to the global pattern, which has been increasing. Trends of abundances of all zooplankton groups slightly increased interannually and peaked seasonally in June and August, except chaetognaths, which fluctuated around the long-term mean value with a seasonal peak in August and October. Abundances of zooplankton groups were highest in the northernmost transect while those of euphausiids were highest in the southern transect. We discuss the distribution patterns of SST and zooplankton groups in relation to oceanographic characteristics in the study area.

In order to elucidate temporal variations of temperature, salinity, pH, dissolved oxygen (DO), suspended particulate matter (SPM), dissolved inorganic nutrients, and chlorophyll a, we performed 25-hour continuous monitoring in the Seomjin River Estuary in March (dry season) and July (rainy season) 2006. We also investigated spatial variations of marine environmental parameters across a saline gradient. In the Seomjin River Estuary, continuous monitoring results revealed that salinity variations were mainly affected by tidal cycle in the dry season and by river discharge in the rainy season. In the dry season, the spatio-temporal distribution of dissolved inorganic nutrient (nitrate, nitrite, and silicate) concentrations showed a good correlation with tidal cycle. While nutrient concentrations in rainy season showed not much variance in time. There were 6 and 4 times higher dissolved inorganic nitrogen and phosphorus concentrations in the rainy season than those in the dry season, respectively. Silicate concentration was 43 times higher in the rainy season than that in the dry season. Chlorophyll a concentration was higher in the dry season than that in the rainy season showing high nutrient concentrations. The results of this study, spatio-temporal variations of marine environmental factors are determined by both tidal cycle and river discharge. It seems that chlorophyll a concentration is related to the river discharge than dissolved inorganic nutrient distribution.

This paper proposes a flame verification algorithm using motion and spatial persistency. Most previous vision-based methods using color information and temporal variations of pixels produce frequent false alarms due to the use of many heuristic features. To solve these problems, we used a Bayesian Networks. In addition, since the shape of flame changes upwards irregularly due to the airflow caused by wind or burning material, we distinct real flame from moving objects by checking the motion orientation and temporal persistency of flame regions to remove the misclassification. As a result, the use of two verification steps and a Bayesian inference improved the detection performance and reduced the missing rate.

Acoustic propagation in shallow water with changing environments is a major concern of navy. Temporal and spatial variability of acoustic propagation in the northern East China Sea (ECS) is studied, using the 11 years hydrographic data and the Bellhop acoustic model. Acoustic propagation in the northern ECS is highly variable due to extensive interaction of various ocean currents and boundaries. Seasonal variations of transmission loss (TL) with various source depths are highly affected by sharp gradient of sound speed and bottoms interaction. Especially, various bottom sediment types lead to severely degrading a waterborne propagation with bottom loss. In particular, the highly increased TL near the ocean front depends on the source position, and the direction of sound propagation.
In this paper, we introduce visual contexts in terms of types and utilization methods for robust object recognition with intelligent mobile robots. One of the core technologies for intelligent robots is visual object recognition. Robust techniques are strongly required since there are many sources of visual variations such as geometric, photometric, and noise. For such requirements, we define spatial context, hierarchical context, and temporal context. According to object recognition domain, we can select such visual contexts. We also propose a unified framework which can utilize the whole contexts and validates it in real working environment. Finally, we also discuss the future research directions of object recognition technologies for intelligent robots.
For measuring the performance of passive sonars, we usually consider the maximum Detection Range (DR) under the environment and system parameters in operation. In shallow water, where sound waves inevitably interacts with sea surface or bottom, detection generally maintains up to the maximum range. In deep water, however, sound waves may not interact with sea surface or/and bottom, and thus there may exist shadow zones where sound waves can hardly reach. In this situation, DR alone may not completely define the performance of each sonar. For complete description of sonar performance, we employ the concept 'Robustness Of Detection (ROD)'. In the coastal region of the East Sea, the spatial variations of water masses have close relations with DR and ROD, where the two parameters show reverse spatial variations in general. The spatial and temporal analysis of the temperature by employing the Empirical Orthogonal Function (EOF) shows that the 1-st mode represents typical pattern of seasonal variation and the 2-nd mode represents strength variations of mixed layers and currents. The two modes are estimated to explain about 92 % of the variations. Assuming two types of targets located at the depths of 5 m (shallow) and 100 m (deep), the passive sonar performance (DR) gives high negative correlations (about -0.9) with the first two modes. Most of temporal variations of temperature occur from the surface up to 200 m in the water column so that when we assume a target at 100 m, we can expect detection performance of little seasonal variations with passive sonars below 100 m.

Temporal and spatial variations and species composition of ichthyoplanktons were investigated by Bongo net in a sea area with the construction of artificial upwelling structure at 13, June, 21 September, and 23 September in 2012. A total of fish eggs was 4,849 ind./$1,000m^3$, and fish larvaes was 641 ind./$1,000m^3$ in the study area. The common fish eggs was Engraulis japonicus which was composed of 57.5%, and unidentified I, II, III and IV were occurred with decreased number of individuals order. For fish larvaes, Pictiblennius yatabei, Repomucenus sp.A, sp.B and Scomber japonicus were dominated, however, other species were Engraulis japonicus, Konosirus puntatus, and unidentified I, II. Temporal variations of fish eggs and larvae were remarkable differed. Higher numbers of fish eggs and larvaes were July 2012, whereas those were lower at August 2012. Spatial variations of those were also significantly differed with higher numbers were at station 2 and 3 during study periods. The total number of fish eggs and larvae was about 4 fold against numbers of those in the compared area far from study area. These results indicated that higher numbers of fish eggs and larvaes were due to influx much more nutrients and food organisms with artificial upwelling.
A total of 52 sampling sites were selected in the stream network of the upper Paldang watershed (e.g. Kyonan, Gapyeong, Jojong, Chengmi, Bockha, Yanghwa and Heuk streams). Over the time period of April 2007-February 2008, 1820 samples were collected and analyzed for physico-chemical variables of the upper watershed in order to investigate spatio-temporal water quality variation in particular the relationship with land use. Although temporal variations of water quality in each stream were similar and were significantly influenced by flow, spatial variations in each stream varied as physico-chemical characteristics of upper watershed. As a result of regression analysis, Biological Oxygen Demand (BOD), Chemical Oxygen Demand (COD), Total Nitrogen (T-N), and Total phosphorus (T-P) concentration were the most significantly and positively associated with people population density. It is necessary to manage not only water quality but also land use of upper watershed and flow flux.
