  • This paper proposes a sensor-fusion technique where the data sets for the previous moments are properly transformed and fused into the current data sets to enable accurate measurement, such as, distance to an obstacle and location of the service robot itself. In the conventional fusion schemes, the measurement is dependent on the current data sets. As the results, more of sensors are required to measure a certain physical parameter or to improve the accuracy of the measurement. However, in this approach, instead of adding more sensors to the system , the temporal sequence of the data sets are stored and utilized for the measurement improvement. Theoretical basis is il lustrated by examples and...

  • Temporal disappearance of weather phenomena effect is frequently observed in flight simulator when large volume of terrain data are processed. This problem was solved by employing culling scheme at static ratio in the existing scheme. However, since this approach causes the irregular rendering speed according to volume of data, it is necessary to develop a new culling scheme to maintain steady rendering speed by adjusting the culling ratio dynamically. In this paper, we propose a new culling scheme to make use of distance of the visibility to determine culling ratio depending on volume of terrain data. The experimental results show that rendering speed is preserved by the proposed scheme without affecting the visuality at rendering the scene and weather phenomena effect together.

  • We carried out an image analysis of living cells forming their contacts at the bottom of the cell culturing substrate. In order to visualize the contact area selectively, we adopted total-internal-reflection-fluorescence (TIRF) method, which can illuminate the specimen volume within only several hundred nano-meters above the substrate. From the fluorescent intensity of the TRF image, we could calculate the distance of the cell surface from the substrate. As a result, we visualized the origin of cell contacts, their movements, and the change of cell-contact type from the close-contact into focal-contact with information of its vertical displacement representing the temporal evolution process of the three-dimensional cell-surface-profile near the contact area during this metamorphosis.

  • This paper presents a training method for neural networks and the employment of MSE (mean scare error) values as the basis of a decision regarding the identity claim of a speaker in a recurrent neural networks based speaker verification system. Recurrent neural networks (RNNs) are employed to capture temporally dynamic characteristics of speech signal. In the process of supervised learning for RNNs, target outputs are automatically generated and the generated target outputs are made to represent the temporal variation of input speech sounds. To increase the capability of discriminating between the true speaker and an impostor, a discriminative training method for RNNs is presented. This paper shows the use and the effectiveness of the MSE value, which is obtained from the Euclidean distance between the target outputs and the outputs of networks for test speech sounds of a speaker, as the basis of speaker verification. In terms of equal error rates, results of experiments, which have been performed using the Korean speech database, show that the proposed speaker verification system exhibits better performance than a conventional hidden Markov model based speaker verification system.

  • In order to derive time dependence of the atmospheric diffuse light, which consists of the airglow continuum emission and diffusely scattered radiations of the intergrated starlight, the diffuse Galactic light, and the zodiacal light, we have analyzed the meridian scan observations of the sky brightness at $5,080\;{\AA}$ and $5,300\;{\AA}$. Amplitude of the time-variation becomes larger for lower elevation, and maximum amplitude is found to be about $50\;S_{10}(V)_{G2V}$ at elevation $10^{\circ}$. The atmospheric diffuse radiation attains maximum brightness at around midnight, and afterward it decreases slowly with time. The time-variations for the two wavelengths are similar to each other. The observed brightness distribution of the diffuse light along the zenith distance is fitted to an empirical relation of two parameters. By making the two parameters time-dependent, we describe the spatial and time variations of the atmospheric diffuse light. This enables us to make time dependent correction for the atmospheric diffuse component in the reduction of zodiacal light brightness.

  • Physical fundamentals of ultrashort femtosecond lasers are addressed along with emerging applications for precision manufacturing and metrology. Femtosecond lasers emit short pulses whose temporal width is in the range of less than a picosecond to a few femtoseconds, thereby enabling extremely high peak-power machining with less thermal damages. Besides, the broad spectral bandwidth of femtosecond lasers constructed in the form of frequency comb permits absolute distance measurements leading to ultraprecision positioning control and dimensional metrology.

  • Appropriate amount of water supply to paddy fields in proper time is important to achieve efficient agricultural water management. The purpose of this study is to evaluate the irrigation water supply adequacy for paddy fields using water level data in irrigation canals. For the evaluation, the real-time water level data were collected from main canals in the Dongjin irrigation district for 2 years. Using the water level data, delivered irrigation water amounts at the distribution points of each canal were calculated. The water balance model for paddy field was designed considering intermittent irrigation and the irrigation water requirement was estimated. Irrigation water supply adequacy was analyzed from main canals to the irrigation blocks based on the comparison between estimated requirement and delivered irrigation water amounts. From the adequacy analysis, irrigation water supply showed poor management condition in 2012 with low efficiency except the Daepyong canal section, and the adequacy in 2013 was good or fair except the Yongsung canal section. When irrigation water for paddy fields was insufficient, water supply adequacy was affected by irrigation area, but when irrigation water was enough to supply, adequacy was affected by distance from main canal to distribution points. These results of the spatial and temporal dimensions of the irrigation adequacy could be utilized for efficient irrigation water management to improve the temporal uniformity and equity in the water distribution for paddy fields.

  • In this study, the spatial and temporal distribution of volatile organic compounds (VOCs) in an industrial shipbuilding complex was monitored, and the local characteristics estimated. The major VOC component measured at all of the sampling sites were almost the same as those found at an indoor painting facility, indicating that painting works conducted in the shipyards were a significant source of VOCs in the vicinity of shipbuilding areas. The main parameters affecting the VOCs distribution were the distance between the sampling site and painting work place, and the intensity of the painting works. A quite broad range of VOC concentrations were observed in all of the sampling sites, depending on the intensity of painting works in nearby areas suppressing the typical seasonal and temporal variation trends in VOCs observed in urban areas.
